This document outlines a student's project to create promotional media for York aimed at 16-24 year olds. The student's original idea was to create an animated interview series, but it was abandoned due to lack of a clear concept. The revised project became a brochure highlighting attractions in York through photos and descriptions. It includes planning documents like a risk assessment for photography and research on York's history and architecture. The student reflects that their original animated idea may have engaged audiences more but the brochure informs about York's heritage. They note lessons in properly scoping projects and managing time.
2. These are some images I have collected to set a
mood for my brochure.
3. Plan for project.
For my project I want to take photos of the National railway museum, the minster, the shambles and other
various places around York. The photography will be one of my main subjects I will focus on in my brochure, this
will require a contingency plan and risk assessment. The photos will appear alongside a short description and
info about the place photographed. The font of the title on each page will suite the atmosphere of each location,
however the small paragraph text will remain the same to keep up consistency throughout the pages. This
intended styling will hopefully appeal to the younger generation; however I want to make it accessible to pretty
much anyone of any age and gender.
5. Photography
York is one of the most historical places in the uk and is the most haunted city in Europe, it is also a place where
modern architecture, abstract style and traditional style meet. There are some areas in york where you could take a
photo and it would look good just because of the styling of the buildings that surround the area. Many of the
buildings that look old probably are, the earliest buildings being built in 1350-1475.
The minster will be a good thing to photograph as it has more than around a 1000 years of history which I can talk
about and present it as a tourist attraction like a normal brochure would.
6. The audience that the whole project is aimed at is 12-25-year old's and is
going to be made to attract these people to come to York or present
the city in some form of media. My idea for this project is to make a
series of photos that present York in a nice way and shows key places
you could visit. It will be brochure like
audience
I think that this links with the given audience of 16-24-year old's and will
offer them a guide to York, I am trying to make the historic values of York
more accessible and interesting to the younger generation.
8. Existing product
This front cover is from an official travel brochure for York, It shows the roofs of the
shambles and the main attraction of York, The minster. This singular picture shows the
city walls, the minster and the medieval streets of the shambles. This shows that the
person picking the Brochure who is wanting to travel to York has a clear view on what
the city looks like and what the main attraction is.
9. Photo edit Increase the opacity and saturation
to make the photo of it and show
York in a contempery modern art
sort of way with the shambles
buildings and how the aesthetic is
quite old, but the structures are very
abstract .
brochure
Make a brochure for
tourists that want to visit
York but also one for
people who would want
to and this would show
some key attractions that
the city brings. I could
make my own logo for it
and include some edited
photo for the front cover

14. AUDIENCE
At the start of the project we were given a working audience for our client that we could filter and make into
our own. When given the 16-24 age range my thought process went to an advertisement like Aldi would do
where they are in a major city and ask old people and just anyone walking by questions that have a comedic
side to it that the given age range could find amusing. When thinking of this I came across creature comforts
which I had seen before, then I came up with the idea of animating this interview advert, after production fell
through because I had just no specific thing I was going to animate it became incomplete, so I changed my
idea to a brochure/leaflet that would shine a light on some of York's greatest attractions, and make this appeal
to my target audience of young people. I feel I can include more places that the younger generation would
enjoy, like modern bars, restraunts.
15. DESIGN
My design for my final production was decided on the front page and I tried to keep a specific colour scheme and style that stays consistent
throughout the pages. So, I started by editing a picture I had taken that would present one of the most popular aspects of York, the Shambles. I
started by changed the textures of the image so it would look like someone had just drawn it. I then changed the opacity and contrast to get the
block colours you see. Then I thought it would look like a front cover of something if it had some colour on it to make it look appealing to my
audience. I chose to put the York council logo on so I can make it look more authentic. I chose to do a different font for each title so they could
all have their unique style, but then keep the paragraph text the same throughout so I can keep the styling consistent, furthermore there is a
yellow bar at the bottom of each page for consistency in colour the scheme. The images I have used are my own, except the front cover bottom
two because I had no other time to go to York and needed them because I wanted to have them on my front cover.
I chose the specific font of text for the front that suits the medieval aspect of York.
Here is an existing product I found,
which looks authentic as a travel
magazine, but I think with my clear
"visit", it shows that it is a brochure,
although this obviously looks better
and the design is something to
think about if I were to do
something like this product in my
next project
16. CLIENT
The project was set by the mediale and the task was to create a piece of media based around York that will
attract 16-24-year old's to the city. I believe, overall my original project would have met the client's needs
more than my new one. I believe if I did interviews at popular places in York that would attract more people to
the city, however, if a person was interested in the history of York, I believe they would find my new print
project more appealing. It informs the audience about the shambles and its history, the minster and its more
than 1000 years of history. The national Railway museum page informs the reader on what the fastest steam
train in the world is, and how it is at the railway museum and in pictured in the brochure.
17. CRITICAL
REFLECTION
It is obvious in this specific project, that I
could have managed my time slightly
more productively, and maybe I could
have been a bit more realistic what my
capabilities consist of when thinking about
doing a project all In stop motion
animation.
The finished product does not reflect
my true potential, for example If I had
spent my full time in my project on this
print product, I could have completed
more work and overall created a better
product. However I did not, and I am left
with this unfinished brochure, in future
projects I will be sure to think with a
realistic mind and decide whether I will be
able to complete my work with
confidence that may get a higher grade.
