RESEARCH
For the research of my music video I watched a wide
variety of music videos with similar concepts to know
what kind of thing I would need to be filming for my
music video (the type of shot, which colours to use)
The main source of ideas for my project was the official
music video for the same song that I did, this included
many different special effects, and different types of shot
that go with the song.
I also watched premiere pro tutorials, to see how to do
certain effects and include them in my video.
PLANNING
For the planning of my music video, I wrote out a shot
list, this was to help me when I was filming, this was
useful because I didn’t have to just think up on the spot
what would look good for my music video, I just had it all
in front of me already, I had a shot In mind for pretty
much every line of the song.
I also did a structural breakdown – this was helpful
because it was an easy opportunity to carefully look at all
the lyrics of the song and choose what fits and makes
the most sense for ever lyric – this would then also be
used for help in the shot list.
I did an additional 5 slides for mise en scene, I had one
slide each for colour and lighting, people and clothing
(colour), people (body language), props and positioning
of characters and objects within the frame.
TIME MANAGEMENT
To help with time, I made a schedule on my case study
PowerPoint to easily keep track of time. I wrote out which
day I would need to go where, and how long I would
need to be there. In the end I did not use this as
intended because I was unable to reach the locations I
would have liked to for my music video – and instead
filmed in areas near my house.
If I were to do the time management again, I would have
written down the time of day I needed to film, how many
people I needed at a certain time and what I needed to
happen and when.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
In my music video, I used a wide range of tools to film - I used my
phone, a canon camera and a drone this was a problem in the end
because the size of the frame was different for each, to tackle this
problem I went through each individual clip and changed the size,
this did not take long but it did mean I had to render and export the
whole music video again.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
For the editing of my music video I included a few special effects
which meant I was able to capture the atmosphere I wanted for
the video and to have the viewer understand what is going on
and where the main areas of focus are, for example how strong
the effects are and how fast the pace of the song Is moving, for
example at the start of the music video the colours are dim and
the effects are minimal, but as the video goes on and pace picks
up, the colours pop more and the effects are stronger and more
obvious
AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Throughout the video I had a few aesthetics, the first one that is
seen is the use of bold colour throughout the shots, in an early
scene I had a strong orangey gold look, which was continued for
a short while then as the location of the video changed it turned
into a bold green.
The other aesthetic I had was the use of special effects, I used a
number of different things to make the video look the way I
wanted it to. The effects I used were fade from black, fade to
black and lens distortion, which gave the video a wavey effect.
AUDIENCE APPEAL
I think my music video has a good appeal to the audience of
ASAP rocky, this is because it is a very similar video to the
original, it sticks to the themes of the song which are about
psychedelic experiences, and with the effects I have used in my
music video these are included with the use of special effects.
I think this is a good
representation of the
use of effects and a
good example of the
type of video the
audience of the
original music video
would want to watch
