The Red Umbrella Short Story
In the stories The Red Umbrella, by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and ¨Band Aid for 800 Children¨ by Eli
Saslow there is one subject that the both of stories have in common, Immigration. Still there are many
differences in the stories, in The red umbrella a family is being separated from a poor lifestyle in
Cuba, in ¨Band Aid for 800 Children¨ kids parents are being deported making it harder for the kid to
live.
Both stories have somethings in common, in The red umbrella one of the main problems is family
separation but also in the story ¨Band aid for 800 children¨ there is family separation. In The Red
Umbrella a family sends their kids to america to live a better life while the parents seperate themselves
from the children and stays in cuba. In the story ¨Band Aid for 800 Children¨ kids are getting
separated from their families because of deportation, and illegal immigration. Another thing the stories
have in common is they both have poor lifestyle, in The Red Umbrella Mom and Dad decide to send
the Children to America because if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

America. Meanwhile in the story ¨Band Aid for 800 Children¨ there isn t really a moment where you
can feel that type of sadness, this story has more of a Never stopping hard working feel to it. This is
mostly felt when the character in the story Nora Sandigo talks about how every kid is like a job and is
not easy to handle, Nora talks about how the job she has of taking care of kids that had their parents
deported and how its the only way she is gonna be able to stay in america. The authors use these
techniques to show how hard it is living in other countries that isnt as wealthy, or not as free, and how
hard it is to be an immigrant and make money to live a better life than

A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases
A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) STDs are among the very significant and
preventable public health issues affecting the society and the globe at large today. In the development
stage of human beings, it is of significance that they involve themselves in sexual activities. At this
development stage, it is of note that adolescents mostly are at risk of contracting STDs. This is in all
cultures because sexual activity is highest during the adolescent stage. This calls for early intervention
to help them deal with this health problem. Educating the adolescents to abstain, and use
contraceptives in early sexual activities, are the most important factors to deal with this issue (Oncel,
Kulakac, Akcan, Eravsar Dedeoglu, 2011). Knowledge of STDs does not have to influence the sexual
behavior. Most adolescents are ignorant on how STDs transmit. Lack of sexual information is the
main cause of the increase in sexual activity among the youth. Many male and female youth ignore the
physiological and psychological development of their bodies. This research aims to examine the
sexual knowledge and behavior of adolescents towards the subject matter, STDs, to determine some
factors including age, sex, and family status affecting the involvement of the respondents in sexual
acts (Oncel et. al., 2011). Research work reveals that the awareness of the adolescents about sexuality
and STDs appears to be inadequate. This mainly is because of the ignorance of health workers.

An man from India deeply influenced a black man in America...
An man from India deeply influenced a black man in America who persuaded black Americans to
peacefully seek civil rights. Blacks in America were once slaves. They had neither freedom nor rights.
Now, in the 20th century, segregation has been abolished and discrimination has largely been reduced
and blacks are more able to live freely as American citizens. In Early 1950 s, blacks did not have civil
rights, so they had to fight for their freedom by protesting. In 1955, blacks decided to rally together for
social justice and planned a boycott. This boycott became known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
This boycott was pivotal in the Civil Right Movement by energizing blacks, particularly in the South,
to become more involved in politics. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These laws were applied to the use of everything such as, bathrooms, water fountains, restaurants and
buses. The enforcement of the Jim Crow laws was one of the key factors for the Montgomery Bus
Boycott, initiated by determined black women. People today know Rosa Parks as the pivotal for the
main cause of Montgomery Bus Boycott, but it was not just her, it was also Claudette Colvin. She was
one of the four women who got arrested nine months before Parks in March 1955. Colvin s situation
was similar to Parks; Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus .
Claudette was only fifteen years old at the time of the arrest. She was also a member of the NAACP
Youth Council. The NAACP wanted to test the Montgomery Bus System by assigning black women to
challenging the Jim Crow law on buses in Montgomery, AL. After her arrest, even though she was a
youth, the NAACP thought Colvin would be their key to their rebellion, but could not happen because
she later became pregnant. During her pregnancy, Colvin testified in the Montgomery federal court on
the hearing of the Browder v. Gayle case. Her performance of that civil disobedience did not spark the
bus boycott as Parks did, but did started something that Rosa Parks finished. The elevation of the bus
conflict increased on December 1, 1955, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white
person. There was a law that allowed white bus drivers to expand the whites

Recommendations
Acknowledge the wrongs, find a solution and apologize. There is no doubt things could have been
worse, giving the terrible conditions the staff and guests had to endure. The situation would not have
been as decent, if it were not for the remarkably trained and prepared staff. First, the senior
management staff recommends a special recognition for all employees of the Splendor. Without their
hard work, fast response, and dedication over the course of the three days; situations could have
resulted differently. Recognizing the team members and letting them know how proud Carnival is to

What Was The Impact Of The Show Trials
This period in Russian history is painted red with blood, littered with dead bodies and left scars on the
people of the USSR. The actions taken by Stalin during this time caused major pain and sorrow on the
politics and society of the USSR. The consolidation of Stalin s power was a key part for reason for
undertaking the policies from 1930 s onward. The power struggle in the Communist Party that had
taken place after the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924 is precontext of the purges that were soon take

Tukhachevsky and a group of senior officers from the Soviet high command were found guilty at a
closed trial of coordinating a German funded military plot inside the Red Army. This purge on the Red
Army had the same intentions as the rest of the terror to consolidate the power of Stalin and grow the
Capitalist plot against the USSR. This sparked a mass of large amounts of executions of Red Army
officers and soldiers that were taught the be military fascist plotters. In reality, all of these men were
innocent in every way. Just like in the show trials that had gripped the nation s previous the NKVD
beat confession out of all of these men. This paranoic attack on the Red Army was the tip of the ice

Army was not exactly known at this time, however during this time approximately 35,000 men were
arrested and on trial over the course of 1937 and 1938. There are two main reason for the purge of the
Red Army. The clash of Tukhachevsky and Stalin due to Stalin s demands of the Red Army. When
Stalin pushed the line with Tukhachevsky he would reboke against which Stalin sit well with.

Glass Menagerie Symbolism Essay
In his drama, The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams uses symbolism in order to develop multi
faceted characters and to display the recurring themes of the play. These various symbols appear
throughout the entire piece, and they are usually disguised as objects or imagery. They allow the
reader to know the characters #8217; personalities, and their true inside characteristics. These symbols
also add to the major themes, which develop as the play gains momentum. In the drama, symbols play
the most important role. One of the most recurring symbols is the glass menagerie itself. It consists of
glass animals frozen in form and it is housed at the Wingfield #8217;s apartment. The glass menagerie

It is obvious that Laura has changed, but this change does not become permanent. Just as the
menagerie represents Laura, it also holds significance for Laura #8217;s mother, Amanda. Throughout
the drama, Amanda tells her children about the life she lived when she was young and living at Blue
Mountain. She recalls her dozens of gentlemen callers and her popularity at the time. Seeing how time
has changed for Amanda from her youth to the time presented in the play, it is plain to understand why
she would try to relive her past. Amanda wishes that her life would be as simple and enjoyable as it
was when she was young. She also wants to create such a happy childhood for her two children.
Amanda tries to force upon her views to Laura and Tom, and in turn wants to live in the past. She
yearns for Laura to have gentlemen callers as she had, and tries to make this dream a reality. #8220;It
is Amanda who names Laura #8217;s collection a #8216;glass menagerie, #8217; in which animal
drives are frozen into esthetic objects, and it is she who longs for gentlemen callers in an ungentle
world #8221; (Cohn 101). Amanda tries to freeze her life to preserve the girl she once was. The glass
menagerie, being frozen in time, symbolizes Amanda #8217;s wishes for Laura to live the life Amanda
once had. One specific member of the glass menagerie, the unicorn, plays an important part in
symbolizing the situation between Laura and Jim (the

Immigration And The United States Essay
In the 21st century, immigration is one of the most controversial and hotly debated topics. Thus, we
have an extremely complex immigration process accompanied with extremely complex immigration
laws. Consequently, reform to the United States immigration policy is absolutely necessary to
continue to help build America into the most diverse nation on the planet. To reform immigration,
three topics must be addressed: what to do with illegal immigrants already in the United States, how to
stop future illegal immigration, and how to improve and streamline the process of legal immigration.
Illegal Immigrants Currently in the United States Illegal immigrants currently in the United States
need a path towards citizenship unless they are violent criminals. There are currently approximately 11
million illegal immigrants in the United States. While these immigrants have broken the law,
deporting all of them would be unrealistic, expensive, and ineffective. First, deporting 11 million
illegal immigrants is unrealistic. As former secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said, I
can t even begin to picture how we would deport 11 million people in a few years where we don t
have a police state. The 4th amendment of the Constitution would have to be repeatedly disregarded
for this to happen. Therefore, unless the United States want to abandon the framework this country
was built on an alternative solution other than deportation must be found. This does not even take into

The Godfather is a movie about an American mafia family in the forties. The story is of one of the
Godfather s sons Michael and his unexpected rise to power after experiencing treachery, tragedy, and
the need to fulfill his duty to the family. The settings in the film created depth whether it was used to
give a sense of realism in the environments or to portray some deeper message to the audience. The
acting utilized intense emotions such as fear and despair in order to give a sense of devotion to the
Corleone family. These two aspects work together in order to portray the overarching theme of how
the characters have so much loyalty to the mafia that they have put their family over their moral
values without being aware of it, and the struggle

Times New Roman Calligraphy
Most people do not take the skill handwriting very seriously. Calligraphy is a subject taught for many
centuries and has adopted by almost every culture. It is a skill that has been around for many centuries
and one that is still used today. Back then, it was a craft that not many people were able to do and was
considered more upper class. Many important documents have been written, using calligraphy, to
signify the document s importance. Even up to this day, calligraphy can be seen almost everywhere;
certificates, diplomas, wedding cards, art, signs, etc. The font used in this paper is Times New Roman,
which is a form of calligraphy that originated from Ancient Roman handwriting. Calligraphy
originates from the Greek word kalligraphia, meaning beautiful writing (Dictoinary.com, 2017). Many
people today associate it with fancy penmanship. In ways, that is true but it could also be the

International Monetary Fund and The World Bank, though has a good purpose of their existence, they

Saint Emmanuel The Good Martyr Analysis
In Lasallian schools the core principle of concern for the poor and social justice invites students and
staff to be in solidarity with the poor and advocate for those suffering injustices. This means that
people should have awareness of the poor and those who are victims of injustices and respond to their
needs by means of community service and advocacy. This core principle is illustrated in the novella,
Saint Emmanuel the Good, Martyr by Miguel de Unamuno. The main character, Don Emmanuel is the
parson of the city of Valverde. The congregation of this parish look up to Don Emmanuel, admire him,
and are overtaken by his words in mass. However, the narrator reveals that Don Emmanuel was not a
man of faith. Metamorphosis by Kafka, presents a story of a young man who one day wakes up and is
transformed into a bug. As a result of this transformation, he is mistreated by his family and
considered useless in society. In the case of Saint Emmanuel the Good Martyr, there is a character that
does not believe in God, yet practices concern for the poor and social justice on a daily basis. On the
other hand, we have a character that yearns what Don Emmanuel gives to the citizens in Valverde,
care and concern. Don Emmanuel is a living example of someone who follows the Lasallian core
principle of concern for the poor and social justice. Although Don Emmanuel is a controversial
character because he does not believe in God, I don t think this makes concern and care for others

Child Care Center Observation Essay
I chose to observe at Foster Knox Child Care Center in Warrensburg, Missouri to finish up my
observation hours. When viewing this facility, it was similar to Central Village by having different age
groups separated by rooms. When I first walked into the facility I didn t notice any labeling on the
doors, to identify which age group took place in that room. However, I could easily tell by looking at
the children who were in the room. To finish my observations all I needed was the age group 24 36
months. This age group I was observing was located in the back of the facility. As I entered the room,
I noticed it was empty, no children to be found. I then realize that it was nap time. All children were in
a separate room enclosed by a door that was connected to the room I entered in. When walking in I
noticed two tables were in the center of the room. A tiny restroom area was in the far left hand corner
of the room which had a sink, water fountain, and a small toilet for the children to use frequently after
every activity. There is a play area as well which was located right when you walk into the room. The
room was bright, and had a lot of natural light coming in from the windows. Each child had their own

Measuring Food by the Mile
Measuring food by the mile How much of your dinner tonight will have been grown locally? And how
much will have travelled several hundred miles even several thousand miles to reach your table?
Measuring food miles is a complex task but, reports Tim Lobstein, the results make disturbing
reading.
Living Earth and The Food Magazine
An analysis of the materials needed to produce our food can be startling. Ten litres of orange juice
needs a litre of diesel fuel for processing and transport, and 220 litres of water for irrigaton and
washing the fruit. The water may be a renewable resource, but the fuel is not only irreplaceable but is
a pollutant, too.
The problem is that fossil fuels, such as petrol and diesel are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The aluminium for the yogurt jar lids has come from mines many thousands of miles from the
packaging plant. Then there is the machinery used for packaging the yogurt, which had to be brought
in from Switzerland, perhaps, or Britain, to say nothing of the transport of the workers in the yogurt
processing plant going to and from their homes every day. And the transport of shoppers from their
homes to the shops, in order to buy the yogurt.. So the circle widens, at every point adding to the real
costs of the yogurt, but which do not get added to the price and instead must be paid for in other ways
at other times.

Illegal Vehicle Abuse Research Paper
This incident happened in the City of Auburn, County of King, Washington.
On 3 3 3016 at about 1830 hrs I was westbound on SE 312th ST near the intersection of 112th ST SE,
when I was alerted, via my in car automated license plate reader system (ALPR), to a possible stolen
vehicle. The ALPR indicated the vehicle, WA/AUY8263 had just passed my vehicle heading
eastbound toward 124th ST
SE.
I advised dispatch, via radio, of the plate and dispatch advised the vehicle was a reported stolen
vehicle through Kent PD, OCA 16 4607. Dispatch later confirmed the vehicle as stolen with Kent PD.
By the time I turn my vehicle around, I noticed the vehicle making a right turn from SE 312th ST to

understood his rights and that he would speak with police.
The male initially stated that his name was Dezmon Ah Siu 3 21 00. However, later he stated that he
had lied and that his name was actually Jerome Ah Sui. After a check through WACIC/NCIC, it was
found that he had a no bail juvenile misdemeanor warrant for Youth at Risk. Post Miranda, Officer

Jerome and he stated that he knew the vehicle was stolen. Furthermore, Jerome stated he knew who
stole the vehicle, but did not disclose the information. See

Essay On College Football Playoffs
College Football Playoffs
Imagine a world where The College Football Playoffs were so intense it would have everyone on their
toes in excitement. It would brighten everyone s day to be able to come home and host a friendly party
for these big games. Therefore College Football Playoffs are a very well liked new system. The
College Football Playoffs is a bracket of four teams to decide who is the best college football team.
This system replaced a computer poll that pick the top two teams of college football and had them
play together for the championship. The College Football Playoffs started in the 2014 season and has
not been around for too long. It was Larry Culpeper s idea to put four teams into a bracket and play as
if it was a tournament( Oster). This however has its weaknesses. Adding these extra post season games

The teams can play up to thirteen games in their regular season and then they still have playoffs. This
is way too long. Some of the non conference games are not matched by very many people so they
could be removed without feelings hurt (Schultz). This is important because having a super long
season with games that people do not really care about is not exciting. Shorting the regular season
games would allow for the fan to be more interested and would make an opportunity to add more
playoff games.
Although many would argue against College Football Playoffs, the reasons for the playoffs far outway
the reasons against. Opponents argue that the playoffs are a more fair than computer polls(CNN). The
playoffs are weak because the old computer polls weren t random, they were based on points and
game difficulty. Someone could play crappy teams all year and look like number one but not be the
best team. This is weak because the playoffs are too short, it s biased, and it extends the season too
long. College Football Playoffs must be changed back to computer

My Experience At A Catholic Wedding
Have you ever felt so out of place at an event? This is how I felt when attending a friend s Catholic
wedding. I have attended many weddings; on the other hand, this was completely different than the
standard wedding I imagined. The setting of the church, the discipline the Catholics have with their
religion, and the wedding ceremony was nothing I imagined when being invited to this wedding.
September 23 has always been a day I marked on my calendar every year. This was my wife s and I
anniversary; however, this year I had it marked down for a different event. This was the day a friend
from my previous work was getting married. We discussed his Catholic belief a few times at work;
consequently, when it was time for lent. As a result, I would pick on him for eating meat when he was
not aloud, but that was all I really knew about the religion. The night before the big day I called him,
because not knowing much about the Catholic wedding, I did not know what to wear. I did not know if
I had to wear a suit or if I could wear khakis and a polo shirt. So, he told me khakis would work with a
nice dress shirt. When Saturday came, I did not know I would feel confused or fell as out of place as I
did. However, on the way to the church I figured this would be the typical wedding, where they would
say their vows and the preacher would say you may kiss the bride , then I could make it home to
watch the end of the buckeye s game. Nevertheless, this is not how the wedding would go.

Thor And Heroism
Norse mythology is most well known for being extremely associated with stories and legends of
heroes and villains. Although Thor is best known for his mighty hammer, Mjollnir, he is also known
for his effect on nature s control on life and his acts of heroism.
Thor is one of the most famous gods of Norse mythology. He is said to be one of the most loved of the
gods and is often portrayed in an affectionate way as a huge man with lots of muscles, a red beard, and
a big appetite (Wickersham). He is said to be the god of thunder and in legend, it was believed that
whenever there is a bad storm outside, it s because he is battling ice giants (Wickersham). He is also
the son of Odin who is best known as being the all father of Asguard (Odin ... Show more content on

One of his more famous myths which involve is acts of heroism is the one with his combat with
Hrungnir (Polome, Edgar). It starts off when Hrungnir is invited over by Aesir (Uh sur) to drink with
him, Odin, and Thor (Polome, Edgar). However, Hrungnir s obstreperous behavior soon causes sir to
ask Thor for help in getting rid on this unwanted guest (Polome, Edgar). The only thing that was
holding Thor back from helping was that he couldn t since the laws of hospitality prevented the
champion of the gods from sealing his fate right then and there (Polome, Edgar). As a result, Thor
challenged Hrungnir to a single battle at the boundary between Aesir and Jotunheim (the land of the
giants) (Polome, Edgar). Eventually, Thor won the battle and one again helped his friends with his
problem because that is what he felt he must do. The audience can simply see that this is an extreme
act of heroism because Thor knew that he had to help his friend, who had graciously invited him over,
get rid or his unwanted guest. Thor clearly shows that he is thankful by finding a loop hole in his
duties as a champion of the gods to commit this act of heroism and help his friend out. He stuck with
what he thought was right and fought for it. Just like in another more obscure tale of his where he gets
his hammer stolen, he stands by what he knows is right. He went to the hall where the man who stole
his hammer was keeping it and dressed as a lady so that he could steel it back when they placed it on
his lap as part of an old Norse tradition (Wickersham). He has a good sense of justice and knows well
when it must be brought. He clearly knows no boundaries when it comes to hos beliefs and will stop at
nothing to do what he sees fit for any situation. He knows his place as a hero to many and planed to
keep that title as a righteous

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Research Paper
I choose to research Generalized Anxiety Disorder for my research topic.
This disorder is one of the most arguably common faced encounters clinicians deal with today.
Because of this I choose to focus much of my emphasis on the difficulties one face, that s diagnosed
with GAD and the hard ship of building and maintain a good client relationship. Generalized anxiety
disorder begins at the onset of a worry and or tension that carries on into more severe and debilitating
symptom (American Psychological Association, 1997). These symptoms are triggered by a multitude
of reactions or situation that leads the individual to face uncontrollable panic like attacks. Even when a
person feels the onset of an Anxiety attack it is difficult for them to control it because of the inability
and impairment state it leaves them in.
Some common symptoms of GAD are difficulty concentrating; which leaves the individual incapable
of focusing on things that may seen to be normal to others. Fatigue a feeling of being tired or with out
energy to do daily things, Irritability; which can cause grouchiness and crankiness also the feeling of
wanting to be left alone, GAD also can lead to long periods of restlessness, and at times sleeplessness
(American Psychological Association, 1997)
Many times the source that contributes to the symptoms, that triggers the onset of the anxiety attack
can be hard to identify. Some causing factors can be excessive

Iron Giant Analysis
The Iron Giant (1999), released less than a year after I was born, evokes primarily feelings of
nostalgia. The root of the nostalgia I feel when thinking about this movie comes from having watched
it many times since its release. Over these many instances of seeing the film, I ve come away from it
greatly enjoying the experience because of the connections it has to earlier in my life, and from the
quality of the film that is hard to surpass with any other animated film produced for children. In my
past viewings of the film, I ve identified with both the main character, Hogarth, and with Dean earlier
on in the film. Early on, I identified more with Hogarth because of his age, curiosity, and overall
demeanor. Most times when I ve seen the movie, I was relatively close to Hogarth s age, which I
assumed to be a couple years from my age at any given viewing. His curiosity in trying to understand
the Giant mirrored some of my own curiosity in the world and in what was happening in the movie. I
ve slowly transitioned over time to relating more with Dean towards the beginning of the film. For
most of his introduction, Dean helps Hogarth but is wary and mistrustful of the Giant. Dean is willing
to help when it comes to a kid he recognizes and is acquainted with on some level, but he freaks out
and changes his tune after finding out about the threatening giant in his scrap yard. I follow some of
his logic at this point in the movie, if someone I m acquainted with needs help, I ll most likely help
with some explanation, but things that are extremely unfamiliar, especially of the magnitude
experienced in the movie, I can t help but feel somewhat threatened and unable to relate to something
so different. The lessons I learned from watching this movie cover topics from dealing with what is
unfamiliar to working around seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The main message of the film
seems to be to embrace that which is different in an effort to understand it and empathize with it. It
gets this message across by using different characters and their points of view in relation to the Giant
and how they react given their circumstances, from the young boy to the junk yard owner and
government agent. The movie firmly plants its

Hitler Appeasement Research Paper
Appeasement was thought to be a way of keeping Germany at bay, however, it was proven to be an
ineffective policy as subsequently, war broke out in 1939. Appeasement was a major contributor to
World War 2 as it allowed Hitler to build his military power until it was strong enough to fight a world
scale war. In addition, appeasement emboldened Germany, as the allies never wanted to succumb to
yet another war. Hitler was aware that the appeasement policy was a massive compromise to Hitler,
and in someways a plead not to begin another war. Hitler used this leverage to his advantage, taking
steps that eventually led to the most devastating war of our time.

The social distress saw many protests, fights and rallies in the mid to late 30 s. An anarchist
government was also formed at one stage. Franco saw Nazi Germany as a superpower awaiting to flex
its muscles and wanted the Germans on their side. Using many tactics seen by Mussolini and Hitler,
Franco empowered the nation by simmering the large divide within the country. His fascist ideology
made him come across as a nationalistic and empowering leader, much like the other two Fascist
governments residing in Europe. The Spanish Civil War of 1936 1939 was an armed conflict between
left wing Republicans and far right Fascist Nationalists, led by Francisco Franco. The Republicans
were in alliance with the Anarchists, Communists and Second Spanish Republic while the Nationalists
had the support of the Falangist, Carlist Catholic s, all led by Franco. Franco was fighting for the
overthrowing of the left wing government, the Second Spanish Republic and the establishment of a
military dictatorship. The war is commonly referred a fight between democracy and fascism. In
September of 1936, an intervention pact was signed by 27 countries. This pact meant that once signed,
none of these countries will provide any assistance to either side. Among the 27 countries were
Britain, France, the Soviet Union, Germany and Italy. However soon after the pact, many of these
countries began to provide an international element to the war. The Communist Soviets provided
military assistance to the Republicans, along with Mexico. The Nationalists also had the assistance of
international countries, the biggest being Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The war ended in a
Nationalist victory. Franco established a Fascist Militaristic Dictatorship Government in

Kaheschi Caverns-Personal Narrative

remains of my sanity intact.
I drove north to the Adirondack Mountains last summer, packed with the necessary supplies for a

The Caverns were but a short walk away, reached via a path that lead out into the forest from behind
the motel. The cave entrance was a wide, low crevice at the base of a steep hill, interposed between
the ground and a colossal wedge of rock. It looked to me uncannily like a cavernous mouth, devouring
any light that entered its gaping jaws; and as such, I was reluctant to walk into it. When I hesitated at
the threshold of the cave, however,
Terence called teasingly back to me, suggesting that if I was too afraid to come, I could return to my
motel room and reflect on how much of a coward I was. Embarrassed, I jogged through the cave
entrance to catch up with the rest of the group.
A rough, chiseled path led me down into the aperture, but I saw no kind of lighting to illuminate the
dark recesses of the cave. This was soon made clear when James the apparent leader of the guides, and

Benefits Of Multiculturalism In Canada
Since the era of jetliners, firsts introduced in the 1950s, new interactions have resulted in a more
globalised world, which has increased relationship between the many countries and cultures. The
relationship between the countries makes cultural diversity even more important for Canada and
Ontario. Multiculturalism has some opponent; however, the positive benefits for Canada and Ontario
are economic and cultural.
Opponent of multiculturalism argues that the policies promote the divisiveness of Canada and are
taking over land that should be available to all Canadians. The former Minister for Multiculturalism
and Citizenship states that opponent of multiculturalism makes immigrant hyphenated Canadian
instead of Canadian (Weiner, 1991). This happened when the Hindu community tried to build a
waterfront cemetery in the GTA. Finding a city willing to support the project was complicated and

not weaken Canadian nor does it divide Canadian. Cultural diversity has benefited since industrial

They are thus in an objective rather than subjective category. In any case what feel is always more real
to us than what we know, and we feel the family relationship while we only know the social one.
(Florio 35 36)
If Willy is not totally unsympathetic (and he is not), much of the goodness in him is demonstrated in
his devotion to his wife, according to his lights. Though he is often masterful and curt, he is still
deeply concerned about her: I was fired, and I m looking for a little good news to tell your mother,
because the woman has waited and the woman has suffered. Biff is attached to his mother, and Happy
s hopelessness is most graphic in his failure to be honest with, or concerned about, his family. The
family s devotion to one another, even though misguided, represents a recognizable American ideal.
Linda, for all her warmth and goodness, goes along with her husband and sons in the best success
manual tradition. She tries to protect them from the forces outside and fails. The memory of her
suffering and her fidelity does not keep Willy and Happy from sex or Biff from wandering. Miller s
irony goes still deeper. While Linda is a mirror of goodness and the source of the family s sense of
identity, she is not protection by her silence and her support, she unwittingly cooperates

Statues In The History Of The United States
Historical Monuments In the history of the United States, there was a conflict because of controversy
over slavery and states rights. This was the Civil War, when the southern states seceded from the
United States because they believed they should keep slavery. The Civil War carried on from 1861 to
1865. In this time period, both sides had leaders that they looked up to such as the North having
Ulysses S. Grant, and the South with Robert E. Lee. Usually with leaders people look up to they wish
to memorialize them, thus the memorials of these people come to be. Now in the present there are
issues involving such statues, groups of people that believe the monuments shouldn t be displayed are
vandalizing and in some cases desecrating these statues because they feel they are racist. In my
opinion, I believe the statues should stand as a reminder for history to not repeat itself. I feel that if the
public does allow this, then where does it stop? Is there some way to compromise instead of removing
them completely? These statues may have been put up to memorialize the leaders that were fighting
for their right to own slaves, but back then they didn t know any other lifestyle. According to Mount
Vernon Ladies Association, even George Washington, one of the founding fathers, owned slaves, but
he did emancipate them after his death. The memorials should stand as a reminder for us to not go
back to that way of life, that every human is made equally, that we all bleed red. People

The Allegory Of The Cave
In the allegory of the cave Plato tries to show us two scenarios where the prisoners experience
emotional and intellectual revelations throughout their lives. Plato s theory was that the ones who truly
understand knowledge should guide the ignorant people out of their unenlightened states of being and
into true knowledge. The cave symbolizes the people who think that knowledge come from what they
see and hear in the world. It also indicates people that make assumptions about life based on the
substantial things they experience through hearing and seeing. Plato s main focus was to convey a
story to the world about the difference between beliefs and truth. Anyone can believe in something
they see, but that belief is really just a shadow of the truth.
Already from Plato s illustration of the prisoners, one can tell that they have very little knowledge of
their surroundings. Their lack of knowledge restricts them from knowing what s going on in the real
world. The prisoner s assumption of reality is all the shadows that appear on the wall. As far as life
goes, they believe the shadows are all there is and they don t question it. Plato referred to it as eikasia
signifying the lowest level of knowledge. The prisoners don t know any better so they don t strive to
observe anything else other than the shadows and the noises. In today s society the eikasia states of
mind can be illustrated by narrow minded people, who are set in their own views in life and do not
wish to expand

Adolescents Identity In The Lost Boys By Janice Crowds
Adolescents, is a crucial time period for identity development, in young adults. Several physical and
mental changes take place during this time period. These changes can be a struggle for some
adolescents to handle by themselves. Adolescents begin to look more towards their peer relationships
to gain a better understanding of themselves. Adolescents start to spend more of their free time with
their friends, compared to the time they spend with their parents. Adolescents will look to gain friends

A crowd can be described as a large group of adolescents, who may or may not be friends, who can be
easily identified by their interests, attitudes, abilities, or personal characteristics that they have in
common (Brown Lohr, 1987). Crowds help the adolescent to identify similarities and differences
between themselves and other peers. This in turn creates a hierarchy based on characteristics of the
different crowds. The crowd itself helps shape the adolescents identity, because the adolescent will
conform to the crowd norms. A crowd norm is a common rule of thought, action, or characteristic on
any given topic associated with the crowd itself. When a crowd norm is broken, there are non severe
consequences that occur from other members of the same crowd. For example Goths typically wear
black or dark clothing. If a Goth walks into class wearing a bright pink shirt and a white skirt, other
members of the crowd will ridicule her for the outfit. The Goth broke the crowd norm by wearing the
pink shirt and white skirt, and the consequences were that other members of the group ridiculed her.
These consequences keep the adolescent in check with the crowd norms. Therefore, the consequences
for breaking crowd norms helps shape the adolescents identity by shaping how the adolescent views
certain issues as well as other characteristics of

Johann Sebastian Bach Impact
Johann Sebastian Bach is primarily known for being an outstanding organist and virtuosic. He was a
German composer in the baroque period. The baroque period is the time where human emotions start
to influence music and is often associated with being romantic. Bach was regarded in his time as an
extremist because he had great detail in his pieces. In his 65 years of life, he wrote over 1,000
compositions. Bach s most famous works include Toccata and Fugue in D minor, The Well Tempered
Clavier, and The Cello Suites. It is safe to say that Bach left an imprint and is still influential to music
all over the world. His pieces are still recognizable and used in numerous movies. Bach influenced
18th and 19th century composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Mendelssohn. Bach has
several monuments including the one in Leipzig built in 1908 that people still frequently visit. Using
his talent and skills with music, Bach shared his love for music and began to make a name for himself.
Bach was born Eisenach, Germany, on March 31, 1685. He came from a multi generation family of
musicians. Elizabeth Lämmerhirt Bach was his mother s name and his father, Johann Ambrosius Bach,
was a church organist and taught young Bach how to play the violin. At age ten, after his mother and
father died, Johann moved to Ohrdruf, Germany and received his first lesson on the keyboard from his

Autonomous vehicles are nothing new. At least the testing of these vehicles to get them ready for
public streets has been going on for years. As far back as 1478, Leonardo da Vinci imagined what a
driverless conveyance might look like, although his self propelled vehicle was designed to travel just
130 feet on a predesigned track.

Super Cruise blends adaptive cruise control with lane centering, using cameras and sensors to
automatically steer and brake the car in highway driving. In effect, you ll sit behind the wheel of the
car with your hands off the wheel. No, you won t be able to sit in the passenger seat or the back seat
just yet as you may be required to take over under certain conditions.
The Future is Now: Almost
The transition to self driving cars won t happen all at once. After all, there are more than 255 million
registered vehicles in the US. It will take decades for the fleet to turn over and there will always be
people who prefer to drive themselves.
Other concerns include cost and consumer adoption. With a record number of recalls in recent years,
only risk taking early adopters may jump in. Autonomous cars will also cost more and must pass
regulatory scrutiny. The insurance companies will also need to be onboard to make driverless cars a
reality in 2020.

Module 12 Nutrition And Health Essay
Module 12 discussed the form of energy used by the body and how to measure the used energy, as
well as discussing the causes and impacts of obesity. Energy comes in different forms, and described
by the first law of thermodynamics, energy can be converted from one form of energy into another.
Kilocalories are the form of energy found in food which is converted by the body into the usable form
of energy, ATP. Total energy expenditure is the amount of energy or kilocalories a person needs to
consume to maintain their body weight. The total energy expenditure is the sum of the kilocalories lost
or burned during daily activities, the basal metabolic rate and the thermic effect of food. The basal
metabolic rate is the amount of energy the body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obesity is commonly measured by using the body mass index, however body weight, waist
circumference, and weight to height ratios are other measures that can be used to determine obesity.
Obesity can be caused by decrease physical activity, increased food intake, and genetic determinants
that can affect energy consumption and/or energy expenditure. Obesity can cause various health
problem which can include an increased risk of diabetes mellitus type II, hypertension, high LDL, and
cardiac disease. A nonmedical way to lose weight is to make the energy input less than the energy
output, so the body is not storing excess energy in the form of fat. The approaches of weight loss
modify the energy input by eating a lesser amount of food, taking a drug to inhibit macronutrient
absorption, surgically decreasing the size of the stomach, and/or by taking a drug that suppresses the
appetite. If weight is lost too quickly by drastically reducing the amount of kilocalories consumed,
then it can cause cardiac complications, excessive loss of potassium and proteins from the body,
increase uric acid which can cause gallstones, and sudden death. When a person loses weight at a
healthy rate, it can decrease the risk factors that are caused from

The Importance Of Global Citizenship
As Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader, once said, I have no country to fight for, my country is
the earth, and I am a citizen of the world . Countless of once exclusive societies are nowadays
associated with each other in one way or another through various fields such as communications,
business, travel, entertainment or political figures, and various more. Throughout the past few years,
the attention surrounding the topic of Global Citizenship has increased at an abrupt rate by being
addressed via many individuals among a wide range of religious, social, political or economic
establishments, or educational institutions that are constantly encouraging students to pursue interests
in the enhancement of their knowledge towards an increasingly interconnected world. Throughout the
Faith, Global Citizenship and World Religions course it has been shown through the material that was
taught that by constantly scrutinizing personal points of view, while at the same time enhancing
tolerance towards that of others, defining and correspondingly respecting identities, in addition to
incorporating mindfulness and concern to everyday lives may impulse individuals to act towards the
making of a global community. During the course, it was established that faith undoubtedly plays a
substantial character in the development of the understanding of how an interconnected society
functions, specially in the framework of varying personal or social philosophies. A significant factor in

A Century Of Cinema Susan Sontag Summary
In A Century of Cinema , Susan Sontag explains how cinema was cherished by those who enjoyed
what cinema offered. Cinema was unlike anything else, it was entertainment that had the audience
feeling apart of the film. However, as the years went by, the special feeling regarding cinema went
away as those who admired cinema wanted to help expand the experience. Although cinema is now a
priority, some feel as if cinema is no longer the cinema when it was first established. Movies no longer
have that special feeling like viewers once had. Today, films are not only shared within a theater, if
one pleases they could always have the same experience elsewhere. Moreover, with technology
expanding, it takes away the importance cinema once had. The

Prostate Cancer Research Paper
Prostate cancer is considered as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, in the U. S and most
cases of prostate cancer have a good prognosis. Some of these cases can be aggressive and the death
rate is assessed to be 2.8%. The Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test is used for screening for prostate
cancer, to aid early detection and treatment.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the
prostate gland, found in the blood. Blood sample is utilized to check PSA levels and Lab results are
reported in nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. 4 ng/mL is considered to be the normal

Although PSA Screening tests can facilitate to detect prostate cancer in its early stage, there is
controversy and concern about patient being unnecessarily treated and over diagnosed. The reliability
of prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing is very poor. PSA values could be false positive caused by
conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, ejaculation, perineal trauma and PSA value cannot be
used to rule out prostate cancer. PSA screening misses a considerable number of patients with PCa
(false negatives) and wrongly suspects or false positives (Hayat, Nordin and Berglund, 2013).
Sensitivity of the test is determined with the percentage of people tested with the disease that had
positive results equals the number of patients that were true positive. The cut off range for an
abnormal PSA screening is 4.0 ng/mL. The American Cancer Society estimated that, the sensitivity of
a PSA levels cutoff of 4.0 ng/mL, was twenty one percent for detecting any prostate cancer and fifty
one percent for detecting high grade cancers (Gleason ≥8). Validity of the test can be determined by
the ability of its screening to accurately identify, if the patient has the disease or not. With PSA
screening alone, one cannot validate if the patient has prostate cancer and other diagnostic tests such
as digital rectal exam

The Case of Dr. Breeze and the San Marcos Community Mental Health Center started when Dr.

Persuasive Essay On Community College
Every semester there is a fight to find a parking space on campus. I began Northshore Technical
Community College in the fall of 2014 at the Hammond area campus. With enrollment increasing
rapidly, Northshore relocated the business department to the North campus of Southeastern Louisiana
University campus in the spring of 2016. There is limited parking for freshmen. The parking area, we
can use is assigned to the overflow of the upper classmen. Even though driving a car to campus is
convenient, riding a bicycle to school is a more practical option for some commuter college students
since of the amount of parking spaces available to students are limited.
Parking is not only an issue for Southeastern Louisiana University, consequently is also a problem for
the majority of other colleges. According to, a journalist from California with the East Bay Times, an
article titled Community college parking jams drive students to distraction, stated, People are circling

How The Titans Influence Greek Mythology
Samuel Johnson once said, Great works are not performed by strength but by perseverance. This was
like the Greek Titans ruled over Greece before the Greek Gods and were greater in size and power
than the Greek Gods. Even though the Greek Gods were still powerful and could match up against the
Greek Titans they weren t the ones to pave the path. The Titans played a huge role in Greek
Mythology by bringing Zeus and the others into the world causing a war. The Titans were one of the
first to rule in ancient Greece and were one of the most influential. There were twelve original Titans,
the brothers Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Cronus and the sisters Thea, Rhea,
Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and Tethys ( Titan 1). These Titans ... Show more content on

For example, Contrary to his brothers, Atlas sided with the Titans during their War with the Olympian
Gods and acted as their leader, threatening the Olympians constantly (Hatzitsinidou 4). Atlas s
dedication to the Titans in this war played a massive role in Greek mythology. His devotion landed
him in a different spot than the other Titans after the war was over. For instance, Only Atlas became
singled out and received the harshest punishment by King Zeus: he was doomed to hold up the
heavens with bare hands and bear their weight on his shoulders forever (Hatzitsinidou 4). The earth
being a in the shape of a sphere was first figured out by Atlas due to the punishment he was given.
Prometheus played as big of a role in Greek mythology as Atlas did, but did the opposite of way of
Atlas. Prometheus sided with the God, Siding with the winning side, Prometheus avoided being
punished with the rest of the Titans and was therefore not sent to Tartarus, the Underworld (Karas
Megas 25). Even though Prometheus avoided punishment for being on the winning side, he still got
punished for another reason. The reason of the punishment was that he had tricked Zeus and then
disobeyed Zeus. Prometheus disobeyed Zeus, In an effort to help humanity again, managed to steal
fire back and give it to humans (Karas Megas 25). Prometheus knew he would get into trouble if he

Customer Based Brand Equity for Global Brands: A Multinational Approach
Eda Atilgan Serkan Akinci Safak Aksoy Erdener Kaynak
ABSTRACT. Focusing on the dimensions and measurement, this study is based on the concept of
brand equity for global brands with empirical evidence from three economically and culturally
dissimilar countries USA, Turkey, and Russia. The brand equity for global brands can be measured
under four basic dimensions: perceived quality, brand loyalty, brand associations, and brand trust.
Emergence of brand trust as a new dimension instead of brand awareness complies ... Show more

Although it is apparent that customer based brand equity has multiple dimensions, there is no general
agreement in current marketing literature as to the nature and content of these dimensions. Previous
research has proposed two (e.g., Faircloth, Capella, Alford, 2001; Keller, 1993), three (e.g., Han
Collins, 2002; Netemeyer et al., 2004), four (e.g., Aaker, 1991; Yoo et al., 2000), five (e.g., Lassar,
Mittal, Sharma, 1995), and even eight (e.g., Vazquez, Del Rio, Iglesias, 2002) dimensions. However,
many of these brand equity dimensions have not been systematically measured or validated within a
nomological framework (Netemeyer et al., 2004). For example, the existence and function of trust
have not been fully investigated within the context of brand equity. On the globalization front,
branding has received increasing attention from marketing academicians. The two prominent reasons
for this are increased cross border population mobility and electronic mobility, both of which
contributed to faster transfer of ideas and a global convergence in consumer tastes and values (Quelch,
1999). Global brands, as defined by Aaker and Joachimsthaler (1999), are those brands whose
positioning, advertising strategy, personality, look, and feel are in most respects the same from one
country to another. Reviewing the top 10 global brands, Quelch identified

The European Union Law Has A Big Impact On How The Uk Law...
The European Union law has had a big impact on how the UK law monitor their water pollution as
there are now specific standards that have to be adhered to as the government are now monitored and
measured. The EU first regarded water pollution as an important matter in 1973 and have been
introducing new directives since. The directives have looked at a number of topics referring to water
pollution. In 2000 the European Commission produced The Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC
(WFD) legislation as a major driver for achieving sustainable management of water in the UK and
other EU member states for many years to come. The WFD requests that all inland and coastal waters
within river basin districts must reach at least good status by 2015 and states how this should be
reached through the establishment of environmental objectives and ecological goals for surface
waters. As a result, there will be healthy water environment, achieved by taking due account of
environmental, economic and social considerations (European Communities, 2000). The WFD is a
legal structure that protects all rivers, lakes, estuaries, inland coastal waters and groundwater bodies
across Europe. It aims to do this by: Encouraging sustainable water consumption Protecting,
Enhancing and stopping any deterioration of aquatic systems Stopping hazardous substances entering
the marine environment Reducing ground water pollution Over the past decade there have been

  • 3. A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases A Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) STDs are among the very significant and preventable public health issues affecting the society and the globe at large today. In the development stage of human beings, it is of significance that they involve themselves in sexual activities. At this development stage, it is of note that adolescents mostly are at risk of contracting STDs. This is in all cultures because sexual activity is highest during the adolescent stage. This calls for early intervention to help them deal with this health problem. Educating the adolescents to abstain, and use contraceptives in early sexual activities, are the most important factors to deal with this issue (Oncel, Kulakac, Akcan, Eravsar Dedeoglu, 2011). Knowledge of STDs does not have to influence the sexual behavior. Most adolescents are ignorant on how STDs transmit. Lack of sexual information is the main cause of the increase in sexual activity among the youth. Many male and female youth ignore the physiological and psychological development of their bodies. This research aims to examine the sexual knowledge and behavior of adolescents towards the subject matter, STDs, to determine some factors including age, sex, and family status affecting the involvement of the respondents in sexual acts (Oncel et. al., 2011). Research work reveals that the awareness of the adolescents about sexuality and STDs appears to be inadequate. This mainly is because of the ignorance of health workers. ... The enforcement of the Jim Crow laws was one of the key factors for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, initiated by determined black women. People today know Rosa Parks as the pivotal for the main cause of Montgomery Bus Boycott, but it was not just her, it was also Claudette Colvin. She was one of the four women who got arrested nine months before Parks in March 1955. Colvin s situation was similar to Parks; Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus . Claudette was only fifteen years old at the time of the arrest. She was also a member of the NAACP Youth Council. The NAACP wanted to test the Montgomery Bus System by assigning black women to challenging the Jim Crow law on buses in Montgomery, AL. After her arrest, even though she was a youth, the NAACP thought Colvin would be their key to their rebellion, but could not happen because she later became pregnant. During her pregnancy, Colvin testified in the Montgomery federal court on the hearing of the Browder v. Gayle case. Her performance of that civil disobedience did not spark the bus boycott as Parks did, but did started something that Rosa Parks finished. The elevation of the bus conflict increased on December 1, 1955, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person. There was a law that allowed white bus drivers to expand the whites ... • 11. Immigration And The United States Essay In the 21st century, immigration is one of the most controversial and hotly debated topics. Thus, we have an extremely complex immigration process accompanied with extremely complex immigration laws. Consequently, reform to the United States immigration policy is absolutely necessary to continue to help build America into the most diverse nation on the planet. To reform immigration, three topics must be addressed: what to do with illegal immigrants already in the United States, how to stop future illegal immigration, and how to improve and streamline the process of legal immigration. There are currently approximately 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States. While these immigrants have broken the law, deporting all of them would be unrealistic, expensive, and ineffective. First, deporting 11 million illegal immigrants is unrealistic. As former secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said, I can t even begin to picture how we would deport 11 million people in a few years where we don t have a police state. The 4th amendment of the Constitution would have to be repeatedly disregarded for this to happen. Therefore, unless the United States want to abandon the framework this country was built on an alternative solution other than deportation must be found. This does not even take into ... There were points where we were only going 20 mph on the interstate. We braved the storm and did not stop once. Our minds were too set on the hopes and dreams of spring break. After making it through two states worth of driving 20 mph in a snow storm we were a bit behind schedule in meeting our friend at his place in Florida. However, we were still much ahead of the rest of our group who had just left Indiana. As we entered the sunshine state we called Jake to see where we needed to go from there. He gave us some directions as he took shots in a bar which made us skeptical as to how accurate his directions were in the first place. Although we were unsure of the accuracy of the directions given to us by our drunken friend we took the roads we were told to take. Unfortunately, our fears came to life when we wound up 2 hours in the complete opposite direction of where we needed to be. At this point, it was 4 a.m. Jake was sure he had told us to go the other way of what he had told us. Even to this day he swears he told us the right way we just turned the opposite direction. • 20. Saint Emmanuel The Good Martyr Analysis In Lasallian schools the core principle of concern for the poor and social justice invites students and staff to be in solidarity with the poor and advocate for those suffering injustices. This means that people should have awareness of the poor and those who are victims of injustices and respond to their needs by means of community service and advocacy. This core principle is illustrated in the novella, Saint Emmanuel the Good, Martyr by Miguel de Unamuno. The main character, Don Emmanuel is the parson of the city of Valverde. The congregation of this parish look up to Don Emmanuel, admire him, and are overtaken by his words in mass. However, the narrator reveals that Don Emmanuel was not a man of faith. Metamorphosis by Kafka, presents a story of a young man who one day wakes up and is transformed into a bug. As a result of this transformation, he is mistreated by his family and considered useless in society. In the case of Saint Emmanuel the Good Martyr, there is a character that does not believe in God, yet practices concern for the poor and social justice on a daily basis. On the other hand, we have a character that yearns what Don Emmanuel gives to the citizens in Valverde, care and concern. Don Emmanuel is a living example of someone who follows the Lasallian core principle of concern for the poor and social justice. However, Hrungnir s obstreperous behavior soon causes sir to ask Thor for help in getting rid on this unwanted guest (Polome, Edgar). The only thing that was holding Thor back from helping was that he couldn t since the laws of hospitality prevented the champion of the gods from sealing his fate right then and there (Polome, Edgar). As a result, Thor challenged Hrungnir to a single battle at the boundary between Aesir and Jotunheim (the land of the giants) (Polome, Edgar). Eventually, Thor won the battle and one again helped his friends with his problem because that is what he felt he must do. The audience can simply see that this is an extreme act of heroism because Thor knew that he had to help his friend, who had graciously invited him over, get rid or his unwanted guest. Thor clearly shows that he is thankful by finding a loop hole in his duties as a champion of the gods to commit this act of heroism and help his friend out. He stuck with what he thought was right and fought for it. Just like in another more obscure tale of his where he gets his hammer stolen, he stands by what he knows is right. • 28. Iron Giant Analysis The Iron Giant (1999), released less than a year after I was born, evokes primarily feelings of nostalgia. The root of the nostalgia I feel when thinking about this movie comes from having watched it many times since its release. Over these many instances of seeing the film, I ve come away from it greatly enjoying the experience because of the connections it has to earlier in my life, and from the quality of the film that is hard to surpass with any other animated film produced for children. In my past viewings of the film, I ve identified with both the main character, Hogarth, and with Dean earlier on in the film. Early on, I identified more with Hogarth because of his age, curiosity, and overall demeanor. Most times when I ve seen the movie, I was relatively close to Hogarth s age, which I assumed to be a couple years from my age at any given viewing. His curiosity in trying to understand the Giant mirrored some of my own curiosity in the world and in what was happening in the movie. I ve slowly transitioned over time to relating more with Dean towards the beginning of the film. For most of his introduction, Dean helps Hogarth but is wary and mistrustful of the Giant. Dean is willing to help when it comes to a kid he recognizes and is acquainted with on some level, but he freaks out and changes his tune after finding out about the threatening giant in his scrap yard. I follow some of his logic at this point in the movie, if someone I m acquainted with needs help, I ll most likely help with some explanation, but things that are extremely unfamiliar, especially of the magnitude experienced in the movie, I can t help but feel somewhat threatened and unable to relate to something so different. The lessons I learned from watching this movie cover topics from dealing with what is unfamiliar to working around seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The main message of the film seems to be to embrace that which is different in an effort to understand it and empathize with it. It gets this message across by using different characters and their points of view in relation to the Giant and how they react given their circumstances, from the young boy to the junk yard owner and government agent. In any case what feel is always more real to us than what we know, and we feel the family relationship while we only know the social one. (Florio 35 36) If Willy is not totally unsympathetic (and he is not), much of the goodness in him is demonstrated in his devotion to his wife, according to his lights. Though he is often masterful and curt, he is still deeply concerned about her: I was fired, and I m looking for a little good news to tell your mother, because the woman has waited and the woman has suffered. Biff is attached to his mother, and Happy s hopelessness is most graphic in his failure to be honest with, or concerned about, his family. The family s devotion to one another, even though misguided, represents a recognizable American ideal. Linda, for all her warmth and goodness, goes along with her husband and sons in the best success manual tradition. She tries to protect them from the forces outside and fails. The memory of her suffering and her fidelity does not keep Willy and Happy from sex or Biff from wandering. Miller s irony goes still deeper. • 34. Statues In The History Of The United States Historical Monuments In the history of the United States, there was a conflict because of controversy over slavery and states rights. This was the Civil War, when the southern states seceded from the United States because they believed they should keep slavery. The Civil War carried on from 1861 to 1865. In this time period, both sides had leaders that they looked up to such as the North having Ulysses S. Grant, and the South with Robert E. Lee. Usually with leaders people look up to they wish to memorialize them, thus the memorials of these people come to be. Now in the present there are issues involving such statues, groups of people that believe the monuments shouldn t be displayed are vandalizing and in some cases desecrating these statues because they feel they are racist. In my opinion, I believe the statues should stand as a reminder for history to not repeat itself. I feel that if the public does allow this, then where does it stop? Is there some way to compromise instead of removing them completely? These statues may have been put up to memorialize the leaders that were fighting for their right to own slaves, but back then they didn t know any other lifestyle. According to Mount Vernon Ladies Association, even George Washington, one of the founding fathers, owned slaves, but he did emancipate them after his death. The memorials should stand as a reminder for us to not go back to that way of life, that every human is made equally, that we all bleed red. People ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Allegory Of The Cave In the allegory of the cave Plato tries to show us two scenarios where the prisoners experience emotional and intellectual revelations throughout their lives. Plato s theory was that the ones who truly understand knowledge should guide the ignorant people out of their unenlightened states of being and into true knowledge. The cave symbolizes the people who think that knowledge come from what they see and hear in the world. It also indicates people that make assumptions about life based on the substantial things they experience through hearing and seeing. Plato s main focus was to convey a story to the world about the difference between beliefs and truth. Anyone can believe in something they see, but that belief is really just a shadow of the truth. Already from Plato s illustration of the prisoners, one can tell that they have very little knowledge of their surroundings. Their lack of knowledge restricts them from knowing what s going on in the real world. The prisoner s assumption of reality is all the shadows that appear on the wall. As far as life goes, they believe the shadows are all there is and they don t question it. Plato referred to it as eikasia signifying the lowest level of knowledge. The prisoners don t know any better so they don t strive to observe anything else other than the shadows and the noises. In today s society the eikasia states of mind can be illustrated by narrow minded people, who are set in their own views in life and do not wish to expand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A crowd can be described as a large group of adolescents, who may or may not be friends, who can be easily identified by their interests, attitudes, abilities, or personal characteristics that they have in common (Brown Lohr, 1987). Crowds help the adolescent to identify similarities and differences between themselves and other peers. This in turn creates a hierarchy based on characteristics of the different crowds. The crowd itself helps shape the adolescents identity, because the adolescent will conform to the crowd norms. A crowd norm is a common rule of thought, action, or characteristic on any given topic associated with the crowd itself. When a crowd norm is broken, there are non severe consequences that occur from other members of the same crowd. For example Goths typically wear black or dark clothing. If a Goth walks into class wearing a bright pink shirt and a white skirt, other members of the crowd will ridicule her for the outfit. The Goth broke the crowd norm by wearing the pink shirt and white skirt, and the consequences were that other members of the group ridiculed her.
