The Fifth And Final Leadership Challenge
Leadership Challenge Five
Summary
The fifth and final leadership challenge is an inspirational message to readers who learn how to
Encourage the Heart of their followers. Kouzes Posner (2012) explain that, to further develop a highly
effective team, leaders must recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individual
excellence, and celebrate the values and victories by creating a spirit of community (p. 272). The
importance of a highly motivated team who feels appreciated should not be understated, and is an
integral aspect of organizational leadership. Kouzes Posner explain that to keep hope and
determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that individuals make. In every winning team, the
members need to share in the rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They
make people feel like heroes (Kouzes Posner, 2016, about sec).
Recognizing the contributions of others requires leaders to expect the best from their team. When
leaders set the tone of high expectations the organization takes on an efficacious culture where
excellence is the established norm. A self fulfilling prophecy of high expectations envelopes the group
as a whole. Kouzes Posner write that Exemplary Leaders elicit high performance because they
strongly believe in the abilities of their constituents to achieve even the most challenging goals (p.
276).
Belief in the efficacy of others as a stand alone attribute is only a half measure. Kouzes Posner

Family Theory
Introduction After reviewing the theories, I have chosen Family System theory to discuss how various
factors may impact at different stages in the family lifecycle in a Singapore context. Family systems
theory grew out of the general systems theory, a conceptual framework developed in the 1960s by
Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1968), and family therapists applied these ideas to marriage and family as a
system. (Olson, 2003, p.71). He proposed that a system is characterized by the interactions of its
components and the nonlinearity of those interactions. In the family cycle context, a family member is
only a piece of the whole family and his dynamic interactions with his family and environment will

Mrs tan is overwhelm with the infant s demanding attention and have not been able to get back into
shape after delivery. Mrs Tan tends to catch up on her sleep whenever the baby is asleep and does not
cater to Mr Tan sexual needs. This sudden decrease in sexual factor has caused a dent in their marital
life as they have unrealistic expectations of each other.
Mr Tan is trying to fit himself in the role of a father and try his level best to care for the infant. But
unfortunately, he feels that Mrs Tan is always trying to correct the way he handles the baby thus lessen
his interaction with the baby. The baby crying late at night and Mrs Tan constant nagging causes Mr
Tan to have a weary sleep at night which affects his performance at work. This is a chain effect in
which it is illustrates changing one part of the system, results in changes to other parts of the system.
Mrs Tan on the other hand feel that Mr Tan thinks she is having an easy life because she is able to sit
at home all day. She feel that she is not being appreciated for her tender care towards their baby and
thus she tends to make a big fuss of everything in front of her husband to show she is carrying big
responsibilities. The key process in this stage, which is emotional factor, is strained due to the closed
or morphostatic communication between the couple, the role contiguity of how Mr Tan should be as a
father and the constant presence of each other in laws who drop by often to see their first

Campaign Finance Reform
Freedoms Versus Federal Election Commission
Since the era of Watergate, limits to monetary contributions to campaigns have yielded a debate
regarding the degradation of First Amendment rights and the fight against corrupt politics. Many of
the most significant Supreme Court cases of the twenty first century such as, Citizens United v.
Federal Election Commission, and McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, have dealt with the
controversial topic of campaign finance reform and citizens most basic freedoms (Federal Election
Commission 2015). Landmark cases regarding campaign finance reform and implications on First
Amendment rights have become a controversial issue in American politics that will continue to have a

In the Presidential race of 2008, it is estimated that the combined spending of outside groups, political
parties, and candidates totaled to over five billion dollars (Beneson and Tarr 2012). American politics
has created a culture of political elites that requires every candidate to raise millions of dollars.
Although organizations like the FEC tracks these large sums of money, the amount of money a person
must spend publicizing and promoting themselves has become uncontrollable. Jeb Bush s Super PAC
has already raised over 103 million dollars and filmed countless hours of interviews of the Candidate,
skirting regulations within McCain Feingold that prevent outside sources from directly creating scripts
and advertisements with the Bush campaign (Miller and Elliot 2015). Although Bush and his
supporters may have the constitutional right to raise millions of dollars, and publish deceptive
advertisements, their actions still promote a sentiment of power that should not be allotted to one
person. Regardless of the strides that have been made to reduce corruption within campaign finance
reform, and support citizen s most basic freedoms to support whichever candidate they wish, the entire
campaign process has become too politically elite. The necessity for million dollar campaigns and
extensive financial backing prevents

Charles Darwin s Theory Of Evolution
In January of 1925, the State of Tennessee passed a law called The Butler Bill that prohibited any
teacher within the State of Tennessee to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation
of man and that man descended from a lower order of animals. 1 Fundamentalism was the basis of
The Butler Bill. Fundamentalism is the belief in the literal interpretation of religious texts. In June, a
Tennessee high school substitute teacher named John Scopes was accused of teaching Charles Darwin
s theory of evolution to students. The theory of evolution was a hypothesis that species survived
through natural selection , meaning the adaption of species evolving to better themselves to a
changing and threatening environment and that man evolved from apes. His theory that Scopes taught
was completely against the Butler law. Even though Scopes teaching of evolution violated the Butler
Law, he should have had the right to teach Darwin s theory because religion should not have had any
involvement with the education system.
The Scope Monkey Trial July 10, 1925, the trial of John Scopes began. The case attracted a lot of
attention that it broadcasted throughout the United States via radio. In Scopes defense, The American
Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), together with Clarence Darrow, a famous attorney from Chicago, came
to Scopes defense for the trial. . For the prosecution, Tennessee acquired the attention of William
Jennings Bryan, a three time Democratic presidential

Theme Of Envy In The Faerie Queene
Envy is a sin that poisons the sinner and is self destructive in nature. The common perception of envy
is that it is an emotion that, much like jealousy, that comes from a desire to possess something that
someone else has. However, envy goes a step further and causes an individual to not only desire what
someone else has, but to also wish that the other person did not have it at all. Spenser uses the
conventional view of envy stated above in conjunction with some unconventional imagery in order to
elaborate on the nature and implications of being an envious person. In doing this Spenser is able to
teach to reader an aspect of envy that they may not already know or understand. In his portrayal of
envy in book one of The Faerie Queene, Spenser is trying to convey to his readers that people who are
envious are trapped in and endless cycle of envy that leads to nothing but unhappiness and misery.
Spenser s interpretation of envy, like the other deadly sins in the house of pride, can be broken down
into 4 images: the animal that he rides, his appearance, how he behaves, and the ailment he has. This
paper will use the first three of these images to show how Spenser s depiction of Envy is meant to
teach the reader that the sin of envy can only lead to perpetual unhappiness and misery. The animal
that Spenser chooses to have Envy ride in on is a ravenous wolfe. (The Faerie Queene, I.iv.30.2) It is
interesting that Spenser describes Envy as riding in on a wolf as it is not an

Essay On Issue Management Process
To facilitate the Project Manager in dealing with unforeseen events the Issue Management procedure
outlines a structured yet efficient and agile way to respond to problems as they arise. The Project
Manager needs to categorize each issue according to its impact. This facilitates the identification of
suitable responses, including the use of matrices or past lessons documenting the resolution of similar
issues. The issue categories are:
Change Request: a formal request to change an approved (Baseline) product or aspect of the project.
Off Specification: a non forecasted discrepancy between a product or aspect of the project from their
planned description
Problem/Question: any other event that impacts the project Although issues can be managed in both a
formal or informal way (depending on their nature, impact, and level of authority delegated to the PM)
there are some instances where a formal procedure must be applied (Change Requests impacting
Baseline products, Issues that are considered outside of the PM s remit as per contractual agreements,
policies, applicable standards). To ensure an effective Issue Management the following steps, stated in
Figure 1, will be executed by us. Figure 1: The Issue Management Process
Identification
The issue and change management procedure provides for the issue or change to be captured,

Symbols In A Rose For Emily
The literary works in the short story ¨A Rose For Emily¨ by American Author William Faulkner is an
influential work because of the symbols, motifs, and theme that are expressed throughout the story,
which are based upon love and relationships. Faulkner portrays the story in third person limited which
allows us to know the thoughts and feelings of a single charcter. The narrator is never identified
throughout the story, but when we examine the tone we can understand there is this we person, who
changes his/her mind about Miss Emily at certain points in the narration. A symbol is something used
for or regarded as representing something else. One instance of symbolism in this short story is in the
title itself. The rose is a symbol of love in which case Homer is the rose or love for Emily. Emily s
father wanted the best for her, so he thought that no one was good enough. When her father passed
away she met Homer and fell head over heels in love with him. ... Show more content on

One motif that we see throughout the story is intense gazing of Emily by the narrator and the
townspeople of Jefferson. People are always watching . A paragraph in the story states She will marry
him. Then we said, She will persuade him yet, because Homer himself had remarked he liked men,
and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks Club that he was not a marrying
man. Later we said, Poor Emily behind the jalousies as they passed on Sunday afternoon in the
glittering buggy, Miss Emily with her head high and Homer Barron with his hat cocked and a cigar in
his teeth, reins and whip in a yellow glove. (Rose) The townspeople always watched Emily because
she was such a mystery. They saw that Emily loved Homer but it didn t seem like the feelings were
mutual. It seems as if the people wanted to step in on their relationship, but Miss Emily wasn t going

The Horse Dealer s Daughter, By D. H. Lawrence
Entertainment versus Art
Literary and commercial fiction are the two types of fiction that Authors all over the world present to
readers. Commercial fiction always entertains readers and this is the point, to provide a story that
anyone can enjoy. Literary fiction does not offer a clear way for one to understand and literary fiction
is not created to be understood. Literary fiction makes readers do all the work and find meanings all
by oneself. It is vital to be able to determine a literary work from a commercial one to fully grasp a
work and the methods to determining one from another is easier than one thinks. The Bride Comes to
Yellow Sky, by Stephen Crane, is a story that fully embosses the characteristics that makes a story

In The Horse Dealer s Daughter, by D.H. Lawrence, the literary nature is evident early on in the story.
Literary fiction does not have a likeable main character or protagonist; in the story one doesn t know
who the main character is and of the choices none are likable. All of the brothers in the story make fun
of the sister so one wouldn t like any of those choices, even with the sister she has no obvious
characteristics nor does she perform any actions for her to be considered likeable She would have
been good looking, save for the impressive fixity of her fact, bull dog, as her brothers called it.
(Lawrence 507) Literary fiction also does not have a clear theme or purpose; the story doesn t have
any lesson to be taught or point to be drawn, however it is simply telling a story. Literary fiction leads
the audience to do the thinking for themselves, nothing is clear cut or obvious. The ending of the story
leaves one confused and gives one the option to choose what ending the story has But she only sobbed
terribly, and cried: I feel awful. I feel awful. I feel I m horrible to you. No, I want you, I want you, was
all he answered, blindly with that terrible intonation which frightened her almost more than her horror
lest he should not want her. (Lawrence 517) The story also attempts to elicit feelings about content in
the story; that is a strong point that literary

The Wild West Rides Into The Sunset
Have you ever read a text that included items such as a bold cowboy, trusty horse, beautiful female, or
a dark villain in a dry, isolated, and undeveloped setting? If so, it s a great possibility that you were
reading a classic Western. Many readers of this genre would describe its stereotypes as what I listed
above. You can almost always find that protagonist cowboy hero, who tends to be a good looking and
sharp character that fights the dirty, rugged, evil villain in an epic climax while trying to save his
gorgeous and innocent lady. The setting is often a flat, unpopulated, and undeveloped town,
surrounded by mountains. The Western genre played a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Kolb describes Marshal Jack Potter as a nervous unarmed honeymooner, who rides a train
instead of a horse (98). In the story, Potter is described as wearing a new black suit that most likely
was purchased in San Antonio (23). This gives the reader the idea that the East influenced the West a
great deal, considering a hard nosed, sharp shooting town hero most likely should not be wearing a
new suit that was made in the East. The stereotypical western criminal is mean, dirty, selfish, and
constantly stirring up trouble. In The Bride, your criminal is Scratchy Wilson. However, as Kolb
describes, the difference between Scratchy and most other Western villains is that Scratchy s main
crime seems to be that he can t hold his liquor (98). The eastern culture is brought up again in the
story through Scratchy s clothes. You d expect to visualize a rough and dirty character whose soul is as
dark as his clothes. With Scratchy, you get a criminal wearing a maroon colored flannel shirt that was
made in New York (24). Crane uses these characters to portray an idea to his reader s that the
influence the East has on the West is far greater than the average person would expect.
Expectations for a women in a Western story are generally perceived to be a beautiful, innocent,

Immanuel Kant And The Kant Essay
Immanuel Kant Lying Chiyane Peterson MCCC Ethics MW 1:30pm Parviz Dehghani Lying the one
form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is
morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him just assumed that anyone who
lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit. (Landau,pp.171)
This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie
rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because
it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a
chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you
lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the
consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you
still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. While lying, we accuse others for not being
transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere. (Dehghani,Ethics) We
know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the
person will be truthful. We rather be surrounded by truthful people constantly despite all the lies that
some people tell. No

The Influence of Too Much Violence on Children
In April 2008 at Taylor Elementary, a K 5 school in Hunting Park, a male child held a knife against the
throat of a classmate and threatened to cut off his head if he snitched (Snyder 1). This student, like
many other kindergarten students across the world, is extremely violent. This stems from the student s
violent environment in which he is being raised. Hunting Park, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
is a neighborhood filled with poverty and most importantly a high violent crime rate. Children who
witness domestic and neighborhood violence become more violent themselves because they become
less sensitive to violence, accept violence as normal behavior, and are also at risk for severe
behavioral and psychological problems.
When people, especially children, witness a recurring amount of violence over an extended period of
time, they become less sensitive to violence. One of the largest sources, if not the largest source, for
witnessing a recurring amount of violence is the media. Every day 21 kids kill someone or commit
suicide, and many more are left permanently disabled or injured. When the general public hears stories
similar to this told on the news, it should have an effect on them. They might think about those stories
sometime throughout the day, because the stories are horrible things to hear about. The news tells
stories involving child/teen violence, or just inhumane acts of violence in general, so often that a
viewer doesn t think twice about it. The loss

Pros And Cons Of School Uniforms
Should students wear school uniforms? This is a topic that has been thoroughly argued, yet to no
prevail on either side. I believe school uniforms overall impact children and the education community
negatively. There are many strong reasons to turn down this policy. These include how the uniforms
effect the children and their learning, the sneakiness behind school administrations who utilize this
system, and how the children feel about the uniforms.
First, is how the uniforms affect the children in a negative way. I know a family just a few houses up
the street whose kids go to a Catholic school. Religion set aside, they have to wear uniforms to school.
Often I see them getting out of the car, ripping off their bows and ties with a sort of disgust. My friend
from that family, Aaron, states on the topic, They are uncomfortable, which actually distracts me more
from learning and paying attention. This shows how school uniforms affect the learning environment
negatively and impact children in a negative way. Everyone has heard the phrase, if you get hurt it s
your own fault. But what if you never get the chance to be hurt? You ll never learn. It s the same way
with something as simple as clothing. If children wear vulgar clothing to school then you can talk to
them and tell them it s wrong. It is bad preparation for the real world if we are telling children what to
do, rather than letting them learn to better prepare themselves for the real world.
Next, is the sneakiness behind the administration and their altered statistics. Long beach California is a
town that incorporates school uniforms into their schooling. The district claims the academic success
and low violence rates are due to the school uniforms. They did leave out the other improvements in
their districts including, promotion of conflict resolution, peer mediation, and parental involvement.
The superintendent of this district made a comment to the Harvard Education Letter stating, It is really
hard to know exactly what is causing the positive effect. This shows how districts are hiding other
information to promote how well uniforms fix problems when in reality, it could be many things. The

Furthermore, joint ventures have given them option to join global market of steel producers. However,

always in need of attention. Without attention, people do not have ways on perceiving whether or not
they are loved, cared for or appreciated. And though not in this extent, people also need attention in
order to feel some sense of confidence. In a crowd, people who easily attract other people are usually
those who are confident about how they look and act in public. But on the contrary, the people who
easily consider themselves as wallflowers are usually left with very low self esteems since the lack of
attention easily entails lack of appeal and can also be lack of significance. In this particular ad, the

Dockterman s arguments work because they make parents feel as though they re limiting their child,
which is never something a loving parent would ever want to do. She points out that when they re [the

increases to nearly 90%. That is, more than twice the amount that they retain both through reading and
hearing. The difference is because when a person is really doing the activity, such as boating or
swimming, rather than just learning about it in a class, they can understand the topic better and
progress at a higher speed. Dockterman suggests that if we re not exposing our students to this stuff
early, they re going to be left behind because it s not like all of us can just stop using

Media Reflection Paper
Today the life revolves around media, it is on people s phones, media decorate their walls, and for
some media is their job. Since media is such an inescapable part of the modern landscape it is
significant that we as individuals understand how the media works and how it affects us. In this
course, the nature of the media has been unraveled to reveal the ways that it has impacted society and
how it has done this. This class has made me became more critical of the media in my life and now
even without thinking I recognize patterns, and in some cases toxic themes in the media I consume.
Looking back on this semester and what I have learned I can see that I have become more media
literate in many ways, primarily in the areas of awareness and analysis. I have become more aware of
the way media is constructed. Some things that have stood out to me since I have started this course is
for example the other day when I flew into the ST. Louis airport after Thanksgiving break one of the
monitors in baggage claim said that it was CLear Channel TV before this course I do not know what
clear channel was and I knew that the entertainment business was an oligopoly but I did not realize the
extent. Seeing this was a moment of realization, that what I read was real, this one company has its
hands in every pot. I have also noticed how much media means to people, I was speaking to one of my
friends and I mentioned that I thought marvel was better that DC and she became very upset at me. It
occurred to me that being a DC comics fan was a part of her identity, before I knew that people took
entertainment personally but it was not actively looking for it. I have increased my ability to analyze
the media I consume, now I am more aware of the way industries target audiences. One of the easiest
ways this can be seen is in commercials, advertisers make there for a specific audience, video game
commercials are a good example Game of Wart has a woman in its commercials who speaks in an
alluring voice and invites audiences to come join her. She is there for the male gaze, men are the
desired customers that companies look for, so she is there as a way of saying that this game will make
the player feel special and receive the

Mustang Compare And Contrast
The cars we drive say a lot about us. Alexandra Paul Transportation is a large concern in todays
modern world. Most individuals have opted to buy vehicles for their personal use. Most of these
vehicles consume gasoline and a smaller proportion is hybrid based. These two types of vehicles have
many similarities. both types of vehicles provide an important function to society. That function is to
provide people with a reliable form of transportation. Although these two types of vehicles have many
similarities, their differences are what distinguish them. Dealerships have one purpose only and that is

The Inequality Of The American Dream
The American Dream is the idea that any American can raise their socioeconomic status through hard
work . However, for many Americans, that dream has become impossible. Due to economic hardship,
many Americans are struggling to simply provide food for their families. Upward mobility seems
elusive. Despite the fact that some believe the American Dream is still a reality, due to poor education,
unemployment, economic downturn, and economic inequality the American Dream has become
unattainable for most lower and middle class Americans. America has a massive wealth gap.

Simply put, college graduates are having a hard time finding jobs, and without a well paying job it is
impossible to raise one s economic status in America. When an American graduates from college,
there is a good chance that they will not be able to find employment. This is no surprise, since the
Great Recession and its aftermath is the longest, most severe period of economic weakness in more
than seven decades (Davis, Gould, and Kimball). Economic downturn means fewer available jobs,
especially for those who are just entering the market, as most graduates are. According to the
Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for college graduates is 7.2 percent and the
underemployment rate (the unemployment rate combined with the rate of people currently employed
part time but seeking full time work) is 14.9 percent. Due to the poor economic situation in America,
many graduates are unable to take the two main paths receiving further education or getting more
work experience that enable future career success (Davis, Gould, and Kimball). How are young

Why should you use Pinterest for your sports marketing, and what is it? How can you use it? Simply
put Pinterest is a photo sharing website. Users post videos or photos on their own or others boards.
This is known as a collection of pins and usually has a common theme.
You should use it because it is free, one of the most popular social media websites in the world, and
sports fans love to see pictures or videos of the favorite sports team or even just of a sport they

Violent Media Aggression
Many parents go through the same cycle in regards to dealing with their children. Kids come home
from a long day of school and want a distraction from all the knowledge they consumed that day.
However, a parent does not always have the time or even the ability to entertain their kids, so while
they remain in the kitchen finishing preparing dinner, their children sit on the couch and engage in
video games. Obviously, each parent wants what is best for their child and worries about the effect of
all these violent video games corrupt with shooting, punching, blood, gore, and of course, death.
Which is exactly what leads them to this question. Researchers at Ohio State University asked parents,
media researchers, pediatricians, and psychologists of their opinion on this matter and here is what
they observed: 66 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That s hardly a controversy, Bushman said. With the general consensus about the harmful effects of
media violence, it may seem surprising that some people still question the effects of violent media on
aggression. One important reason is that people don t distinguish between aggression and violence.
These two things are not the same; aggression is a lot less worrisome and harmful than violent
behavior because it does not indicate inflicting pain on another person. But will violent shooting
games and the like be the reason your son punched his brother in the arm when he made fun of him at
dinner tonight? According to Senior Pediatric Psychopharmacologist Dr. Raul R. Silva, childhood

differently in each kid, seen much more frequently in boys who typically have more energy to dispose.

Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle
Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A Bout de Souffle .
To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New
Wave, such as for example the jump cut which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the
Godard ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of
time unnoticeable. Other Godard ian touches include the many shots of clocks, which remind the
viewer that despite the protagonist s fixation on the past, time continues to move on and that moments

She wears the same type of cloths, has the same hair do and her rather eccentric attitude to life also
corresponds to that of her French counterpart.
The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the
general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is much like the French film industry
was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Express was clearly
not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and
appreciation for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to rebel
against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both
of the film directors have something in common with each other.
Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every
material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring matter isn t simply an accident but
it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong
Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist
government. This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of
a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or positive.

Synthesis of 3-Nitrobenzaldehyde Essay
Abstract
This experiment is about the synthesis of 3 nitrobenzaldehyde through nitration. The nitration of
benzaldehyde is an example of an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction, in which a proton of an
aromatic ring is replaced by a nitro group. Many aromatic substitution reactions are known to occur
when an aromatic substrate is allowed to react with a suitable electrophilic reagent, and many other
groups besides nitro may be introduced into the ring. Although the reaction produced a low yield at
the end, the yield is calculated from the reaction and limiting reagent.

Stage 1 of the mechanism of nitration
As the NO2+ ion approached the delocalised electrons in the benzene, those electrons were strongly
attracted toward the positive charge.
Two electrons from the delocalised system were used to form a new bond with the NO2+ ion. Because
those two electrons aren t a part of the delocalised system any longer, the delocalisation was partly
broken, and in the process the ring gained a positive charge.
Stage two
Figure 2. Stage 2 of the nitration mechanism
The second stage involved a hydrogensulphate ion, HSO4 , which was produced at the same time as
the NO2+ ion. This removed a hydrogen from the ring to form sulphuric acid the catalyst had
therefore been regenerated. The electrons which originally joined the hydrogen to the ring were now
used to re establish the delocalised system.

Legal liberalism calls for equality before the law; it was a manner to ensure that there shall be equality

despite the protections in our constitution, there are instances in American history where the Supreme
Court has endorsed other branches to violate or limit its citizens economic freedom. In this essay I will

rights to pursue happiness and to pursue their calling as butchers. They argued that the right was
protected under the privileges or immunities clause of the 14th amendment, which had been ratified in
1848. In a 5 4 decision, the supreme Court conflicted with the butchers reasoning. The Supreme Court
ruled that the monopoly inflicted by the state did not violate the 13th and 14th amendments (privilege

Analysis Of The Lais Of Marie De France
The Lais of Marie de France are a collection of poems that tell enchanting stories of handsome
knights, kings, queens, and romance. Although the lais varied in content; love is the common theme in
each of the lais. Since, love is the center theme of the lais it is important to define the term. According
to the article, The Social Psychology of Love and Attraction romantic love is defined as, a love that is
supposed to stand the test of time, enduring all hardship. Romantic love emphasizes being in love with
a certain individual (Braxton Davis 1). In the lais Marie de France, their a conflict between love,
marriage, and moral responsibility.
Many of the character presented in the lais experience love and tragedy; yet, Marie de France provides
a witty insight into loves immoral issues. In the Lais of Marie de France, loneness, greed, excitement,
and lust are the motivation for many of the characters actions. Marie de France demonstrate how these
characteristics combined with romantic infatuation, passion, and a yearning desire; influences corrupt
behavior. This behavior then manifested into character traits such as: betrayal, adultery, and cruelty
that are revealed throughout the Lais of Marie de France.

The Biological Basis Toward Sexual Orientation
The world has come very far with all the dramatic changes we have faced over the years. Wouldn t
you agree? As much change as the world has been through there are still numerous social problems
that still exist in society today. Amongst those numerous social problems, sexual orientation and
inequality stand out to me. Research from biology, psychology, and sociology is where our
understanding of sexual orientation comes from. There are two hypothetical theories researchers have
discovered examining the biological basis toward sexual orientation. One concept is the
neurohormonal theory, biologist contend that homosexuality is caused by abnormal sex hormone
levels in utero. The alternative theory is based on behavioral genetics, determining the source and
magnitude of genetic impact on sexual orientation. This theory suggested the concept that gay men
were genetically female. Later this theory was proven to be false. Homosexuality was considered as a
pathology or mental illness. Not every psychologists agreed with that perspective. A researcher by the
name of Havelock Ellis stated that homosexuality was congenital and for that reason it could not be
considered as a disease. Sigmund Freud another theorist had the concept that everyone is born
bisexual and that either homosexuality or heterosexuality is developed through social and personal
experience. Ellis and Freud both concurred that homosexuality was not a mental illness. Despite these
researchers opinions in 1973,

Technology Based Learning Essay
Technology based learning (TBL) constitutes learning via electronic technology, including the
Internet, intranets, satellite broadcasts, audio and video conferencing, bulletin boards, chat rooms,
webcasts, and CD ROM. TBL also encompasses related terms, such as online learning and web based
learning that only include learning that occurs via the Internet, and computer based learning that is
restricted to learning through the use of computers. E learning is synonymous with TBL and has
largely replaced it in scholarship and industry as the term of choice.
TBL holds the promise of substantially transforming the way learning takes place because of its
numerous advantages. Among these, TBL fosters greater accessibility to learning by offering anytime
and anywhere delivery. It is readily scalable to both large and small groups since it can accommodate
larger numbers of learners at little extra cost and smaller groups of learners that otherwise would not
be able to participate in traditional classroom training for lack of enrollments. Further, the content of
TBL courses, especially those that are delivered online, can be centrally developed and updated
whenever the need arises; therefore, the cost of replacing outdated course materials and retraining
teachers and instructors drops significantly. From the learners point of view, TBL can be self paced
and matched to the learner s needs, and, building on pedagogy that emphasizes the merits of discovery
learning, it offers

Knowledge and Technology in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court is a complicated novel that fundamentally deals with the
concept of the human experience. Hank Morgan is a nineteenth century mechanic who is transported
back thirteen centuries to medieval Britain, during the time of King Arthur. After his initial shock, he
becomes determined to civilize Camelot by introducing modern industrial technology. At an initial

titles they held.
Hank Morgan uses his superior knowledge of technology to gain personal power. It soon becomes
clear that even though thirteen hundred years have given Hank a technological advantage, they haven t
made him any smarter. Twain himself says of Hank,
...this Yankee of mine has neither the refinement nor the weakness of a college education; he is a

Hank possesses all of this technological knowledge, but fails to understand the implications that this
knowledge will have on the people of the Camelot. Instead of educating the general public and
teaching them how and why something works instead he sends a select few to his man factories .
He uses his knowledge instead to produce fantastic miracles, which although they give him personal
power, continue to perpetuate the superstitions of the populace that he is trying to overcome. For
example, Hank is asked to fix the well at the Valley of Holiness. He installs a pump that will return the

Social Factors And Social Causes Of The French Revolution
The French Revolution was mainly the result of social causes. In the 18th century, the social classes
were categorized as the First Estate, consisting of the clergy; the Second Estate, consisting of the
aristocracy; and finally the Third Estate, including every remaining citizen; from the bourgeoisie
(merchants, lawyers, businessmen) all the way to the poor peasants of the land. All the members of the
first two estates were privileged in law and taxation. Moreover, there was virtually no way to move up
the social ladder unless you were born into it, consequently, raising anger among the bourgeoisie
since, despite their equivalence in wealth as certain nobles, they still had lower living conditions than
the first two estates and were considered the minority.
The bourgeoisie s (middle class) ambition was a major contributor of the French Revolution. This
close contact of the bourgeoisie with less educated members of the Third Estate enabled them to
provide the real leadership of the Revolution when it came... (Truman et al, 131) The middle class
made up the larger half of the Third Estate. Since the peasants weren t organized enough to form their
own assembly, or begin a revolution, the bourgeoisie guided the Third Estate, eventually forming the

Stonebridge s problems to be resolved

systems (GIS) to create randomized controls for crime hotspots. Previous studies had lacked this GIS
technology, which could be a reason for different results. Results showed significant reduction of
violent crime in the experimental group after 12 weeks, and when including the control group there
were 53 violent crimes that were prevented. Contradicting previous findings this showed that foot
patrols are actually effective in preventing violent crime in crime hotspots. When differences in the
starting level of violent crime were accounted for there was no significant differences in treatment and
control areas. The unit of analysis was the Voronoi network which consists of areal units. There were
120 foot patrols found which the police would have patrols in 16 hours a day, 5 days a week, and used
officers recently out of the academy. These officers who are recent academy graduates may have
different tactics than other officers since they may want to prove themselves and are excited to be a
new police officer. This use of new officers may be a mechanism at work reducing crimes as well. The
researchers used a quasi random number generator to assign and control

Photos and Images are More Powerful than Words Essay
Images are More Powerful than Words
The American Heritage College Dictionary defines the term image as An optically or electronically
formed representative reproduction of an object, esp. an optical reproduction formed by a lens or a
mirror. This is what is more commonly referred to as a picture. The definition of a word is a sound or
combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing that symbolizes and communicates a
meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or a combination of morphemes. In fact, there is a
constant debate about the importance and significance of both forms of communication. Because
either one can be interpreted and considered differently, depending on who the viewer or reader is, ...

Even though both the tour guide and a pamphlet told everyone exactly what the organization s purpose
was, the Mural actually said more than needed to be said, without the aid of any words. One can agree
with Mitchell Stephens statement in By Means of the Visible: A Picture s Worth that certain pictures
can put most sentences to shame (486), because the images illustrated in this Mural put, every single
word that was written in the UN pamphlet or spoken by the tour guide, to shame. They gave a deeper
and more spiritual meaning, that went above and beyond the mere one dimensional meaning, of the
words used, both written and spoken.
Since motion pictures are a form of imagery, the next image is from the movie, Coming to America.
The chosen image was when Akeem, the Prince of Zamunda, was getting married at the end of the
movie. When he pulled up the veil of his bride, after thinking that he had lost Lisa forever back in
Queens, the look on his face, when he saw that Lisa was not in New York, but in Zamunda, waiting to
become his bride, was a mix of joy, anxiety, relief and passion, just to name a few. All of the emotions
that were on his face, at that particular moment when he realized that he was going to finally wed the
woman he truly loved, cannot possibly be described by enough words to complete this

extracurricular activities can be associated with sports, singing, dancing, yoga, Greek Life,

emotional satisfaction that is acquired due to being involved with extracurricular activities, and getting
social satisfaction from these activities may make the student in question have less stress in their day

The variables in our study are Stress, Extracurricular Activities, and Social Satisfaction. Stress is
defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding
circumstances. Social Satisfaction is when someone has enough social stimulation in their active life
as to where they don t feel like they have as much stress. Social satisfaction could also have effects on
the students academic performance as well. Extracurricular activities are activities that do not fall
within the scope of a regular curriculum while carrying no kind of academic credit. Similar to athletics
or clubs as well as Greek fraternities or sororities.

Extracurricular Activities
Nancy Darling (2016) explains that students that participate in extracurricular activities tend to be in
an environment where they will have much more social experience, as well as have much more
interactions with their peers. She notes that the students that participate in the activities tend to say
that they have lower levels of stress and tend to have high life satisfaction due to the activities that
they are doing in the activity. In her study, Nancy shows that students who participated in the
extracurricular activities had higher grades, more positive attitudes towards their studies in school, and
having overall lower self reported levels of depression, and lower levels of substance abuse. The

Summer Promise Is Not Just An Ordinary Teenage Book
Summer Promise is not just an ordinary teenage book, but a novel where anyone can learn about God
and how he helps you pull through the bad circumstances and makes the best of the great ones. Christy
Miller, native of Wisconsin and 14 years old, moves to California with her Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob.
Christy lived on a farm, so she had no idea of the luxuries someone could have like clothes, relaxing
on the beach, makeup, and beauty, but her aunt made sure that she learned the amenities of a teenager.
Christy met her first love, named Todd, and he was different than all of the other surfers. Todd
believed in Christ, and that God was the person who controlled his life. Throughout Christy and Todd
s journey, Christy learns about God, why he is important, and that she should give her life to him. She
meets incredible people on the way, who show her the light. Summer Promise exemplifies how people
should always put God first and displays a sweet, innocent teenage love. Christy Miller, Aunt Marti,
Uncle Bob, and Todd star in this Summer Promise book. Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob take Christy into
their home in California for the summer, showing her the new pros of the sun kissed state and its
people. Aunt Marti helps Christy discover herself and who she is by giving her a whole new
makeover, with new clothes, beauty supplies, etc. Without Aunt Marti, Christy would not have found
herself or met Todd, her crush. Uncle Bob is the father figure for Christy, always talking to her

bell hooks is successful in delivering her message in article Learning in the Shadow of Race and Class
because she gives examples of herself as well as examples of other students who she has known. She
argues that lower class students were ignored by their teachers and peers. Although, few sentences and
paragraphs in her article are not as effective as the whole article, still reading it is interesting. In her
essay, hooks defends poor people who have been ignored by white people at school. She also explains
her situation when she was studying. She defends poor people, which is what most of the good writers
are doing in order to let their readers know that they are not thinking about getting money or anything
like that. hooks is an effective writer through the use of persuasive examples and emotional appeals. In
her essay, hooks gives many examples about herself and others, about how it feels to be alone, and
poor. That makes her believable. And these examples improved her essay. She says that she stopped
thinking about having money and everything else but the education. She talks about a girl who never
gave up studying, despite some problems she encountered. She talked about specific friends of hers,
for example, Like my friend during freshmen year, she shared the understanding of what it was like to
be a have not in a world of haves. hooks expresses how difficult it was when she was in San
Francisco, and people around her spoke a language she did not understand.

Artevivo Gallery Analysis
Art galleries and museums are visual spaces used exclusively for an exhibition and education of art.
Galleries and museums are an essential part of our society as it promotes cultural diversity and
differences. The galleries and museums display art to present the viewer an insight into a variety of
cultures, backgrounds, and communities. On the third Friday of every month, an event in Downtown
Brownsville called Noche de Arte takes place. Noche de Arte consists of 13 local buildings and
galleries that showcase artwork to support art and artists within the community. Out of the 13
galleries, two artworks from Artevivo Gallery struck out to me the most. Artevivo Gallery, which is

Although La Rosa is a digital photograph, the viewer can still see that it is a mixed media piece. While
examining this exquisite piece in person, it is abstractly profound by a technique of how everything is
placed together by a collage type of form. The way the emphasis is on the flower is quite beautiful that
brings this photograph together. The variation of colors, writing, and cut outs shows movement in the
piece, yet flows around the flower. The second piece that stood out the most to me was also another
photograph by Mari Ortiz called Loving the Architecture. Architecture, especially in the downtown
area, is antique yet interesting to look at. This picture s medium required various techniques such as
color correction, sizing, cropping, viewing, and printing in a dark room. The color of this picture
defines the boldness and texture of the building in a naturalistic way. Although printing digitally in a
dark room prints the photograph in black and white, the way the shadows captures depth and tones is

Pollution In China Essay
According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, pollution is the action or process of making land, water,
air, etc., dirty and not safe or suitable to use. Pollution as we know it, can be caused by natural
disasters such as typhoons or volcanic eruptions or can be due to the result of human activities such as
the wrong disposal of industrial waste and oil spills. As we all know, China, today, is considered to be
the most populous country in the world having about an estimated count of 7 billion people in its
territory, is facing a drastic challenge in their environment. As China s economic growth continues to

third of fish species native to the Yellow River are now extinct because of damming or pollution.
There are really pros and cons of being a highly industrialized country. Even though they are rich,
soon enough they would run out of natural resources they will need in their everyday lives. According
to Elizabeth Economy, China s fast growth in their economy resulted to the devastation of its land and
its resources. The environmental problem of China traces back many years ago. Leaders of each
dynasty merged territories and developed China s economy by abusing the country s natural wealth
that contributed to scarcity and natural disasters China s current environmental situation is the result
not only of policy choices made today but also of attitudes, approaches, and institutions that have

The Mexican Revolution By Porfirio Diaz
Verdin, Ramon
Khan, Kamal
Santillan, Karen
Research Paper
The Mexican Revolution was brought on by tremendous disagreement among the Mexican people
over the dictatorship of President Porfirio I. Díaz. Diaz stayed in office for 34 years. During that time,
power was in the hands of only a few people. The people had no power to express their opinions or
select their public officials. Wealth was also in the hands of a few people. Porfirio pushed peasants off
of their lands and had business men take their land, they called the land haciendas. The dictator like
rule of Porfirio I. Diaz and the want of land were the reason for fighting in the Mexican Revolution.
The main antagonist of the Mexican revolution was Porfirio Diaz. Diaz became president of Mexico
in 1876. He was the autocrat who took full control of Mexico for 34 years. The revolutionist wanted a
democracy so they fought against his power. The political instability during this time was also a major
question in Mexico. Porfirio Diaz was very corrupt. He used his power as the president to his
advantage. The Mexican Constitution called for public election but Díaz and his supporters used their
political and economic resources to stay in power. He would often imprison his political opponents or
assassinate them just to keep his power over Mexico. This caused the citizens of Mexico to
increasingly oppose Porfirio Diaz and his regime.
Francisco I. Madero, a wealthy landowner and industrialist, was one of the strongest

  • 2. The Fifth And Final Leadership Challenge Leadership Challenge Five Summary The fifth and final leadership challenge is an inspirational message to readers who learn how to Encourage the Heart of their followers. Kouzes Posner (2012) explain that, to further develop a highly effective team, leaders must recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence, and celebrate the values and victories by creating a spirit of community (p. 272). The importance of a highly motivated team who feels appreciated should not be understated, and is an integral aspect of organizational leadership. Kouzes Posner explain that to keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that individuals make. In every winning team, the members need to share in the rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They make people feel like heroes (Kouzes Posner, 2016, about sec). Recognizing the contributions of others requires leaders to expect the best from their team. When leaders set the tone of high expectations the organization takes on an efficacious culture where excellence is the established norm. A self fulfilling prophecy of high expectations envelopes the group as a whole. Kouzes Posner write that Exemplary Leaders elicit high performance because they strongly believe in the abilities of their constituents to achieve even the most challenging goals (p. 276). Belief in the efficacy of others as a stand alone attribute is only a half measure. Kouzes Posner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Family Theory Introduction After reviewing the theories, I have chosen Family System theory to discuss how various factors may impact at different stages in the family lifecycle in a Singapore context. Family systems theory grew out of the general systems theory, a conceptual framework developed in the 1960s by Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1968), and family therapists applied these ideas to marriage and family as a system. (Olson, 2003, p.71). He proposed that a system is characterized by the interactions of its components and the nonlinearity of those interactions. In the family cycle context, a family member is only a piece of the whole family and his dynamic interactions with his family and environment will determine his functionality as an ... • 4. Campaign Finance Reform Freedoms Versus Federal Election Commission Since the era of Watergate, limits to monetary contributions to campaigns have yielded a debate regarding the degradation of First Amendment rights and the fight against corrupt politics. Many of the most significant Supreme Court cases of the twenty first century such as, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, and McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, have dealt with the controversial topic of campaign finance reform and citizens most basic freedoms (Federal Election Commission 2015). Landmark cases regarding campaign finance reform and implications on First Amendment rights have become a controversial issue in American politics that will continue to have a vast impact on monetary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Presidential race of 2008, it is estimated that the combined spending of outside groups, political parties, and candidates totaled to over five billion dollars (Beneson and Tarr 2012). American politics has created a culture of political elites that requires every candidate to raise millions of dollars. Although organizations like the FEC tracks these large sums of money, the amount of money a person must spend publicizing and promoting themselves has become uncontrollable. Jeb Bush s Super PAC has already raised over 103 million dollars and filmed countless hours of interviews of the Candidate, skirting regulations within McCain Feingold that prevent outside sources from directly creating scripts and advertisements with the Bush campaign (Miller and Elliot 2015). Although Bush and his supporters may have the constitutional right to raise millions of dollars, and publish deceptive advertisements, their actions still promote a sentiment of power that should not be allotted to one person. Regardless of the strides that have been made to reduce corruption within campaign finance reform, and support citizen s most basic freedoms to support whichever candidate they wish, the entire campaign process has become too politically elite. The necessity for million dollar campaigns and extensive financial backing prevents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Charles Darwin s Theory Of Evolution In January of 1925, the State of Tennessee passed a law called The Butler Bill that prohibited any teacher within the State of Tennessee to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man and that man descended from a lower order of animals. 1 Fundamentalism was the basis of The Butler Bill. Fundamentalism is the belief in the literal interpretation of religious texts. In June, a Tennessee high school substitute teacher named John Scopes was accused of teaching Charles Darwin s theory of evolution to students. The theory of evolution was a hypothesis that species survived through natural selection , meaning the adaption of species evolving to better themselves to a changing and threatening environment and that man evolved from apes. His theory that Scopes taught was completely against the Butler law. Even though Scopes teaching of evolution violated the Butler Law, he should have had the right to teach Darwin s theory because religion should not have had any involvement with the education system. The Scope Monkey Trial July 10, 1925, the trial of John Scopes began. The case attracted a lot of attention that it broadcasted throughout the United States via radio. In Scopes defense, The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), together with Clarence Darrow, a famous attorney from Chicago, came to Scopes defense for the trial. . • 6. Theme Of Envy In The Faerie Queene Envy is a sin that poisons the sinner and is self destructive in nature. The common perception of envy is that it is an emotion that, much like jealousy, that comes from a desire to possess something that someone else has. However, envy goes a step further and causes an individual to not only desire what someone else has, but to also wish that the other person did not have it at all. Spenser uses the conventional view of envy stated above in conjunction with some unconventional imagery in order to elaborate on the nature and implications of being an envious person. In doing this Spenser is able to teach to reader an aspect of envy that they may not already know or understand. In his portrayal of envy in book one of The Faerie Queene, Spenser is trying to convey to his readers that people who are envious are trapped in and endless cycle of envy that leads to nothing but unhappiness and misery. Spenser s interpretation of envy, like the other deadly sins in the house of pride, can be broken down into 4 images: the animal that he rides, his appearance, how he behaves, and the ailment he has. This paper will use the first three of these images to show how Spenser s depiction of Envy is meant to teach the reader that the sin of envy can only lead to perpetual unhappiness and misery. The animal that Spenser chooses to have Envy ride in on is a ravenous wolfe. (The Faerie Queene, I.iv.30.2) It is interesting that Spenser describes Envy as riding in on a wolf as it is not an ... • 8. Essay On Issue Management Process To facilitate the Project Manager in dealing with unforeseen events the Issue Management procedure outlines a structured yet efficient and agile way to respond to problems as they arise. The Project Manager needs to categorize each issue according to its impact. This facilitates the identification of suitable responses, including the use of matrices or past lessons documenting the resolution of similar issues. The issue categories are: Change Request: a formal request to change an approved (Baseline) product or aspect of the project. Off Specification: a non forecasted discrepancy between a product or aspect of the project from their planned description Problem/Question: any other event that impacts the project Although issues can be managed in both a formal or informal way (depending on their nature, impact, and level of authority delegated to the PM) there are some instances where a formal procedure must be applied (Change Requests impacting Baseline products, Issues that are considered outside of the PM s remit as per contractual agreements, policies, applicable standards). • 9. Symbols In A Rose For Emily The literary works in the short story ¨A Rose For Emily¨ by American Author William Faulkner is an influential work because of the symbols, motifs, and theme that are expressed throughout the story, which are based upon love and relationships. Faulkner portrays the story in third person limited which allows us to know the thoughts and feelings of a single charcter. The narrator is never identified throughout the story, but when we examine the tone we can understand there is this we person, who changes his/her mind about Miss Emily at certain points in the narration. A symbol is something used for or regarded as representing something else. One instance of symbolism in this short story is in the title itself. The rose is a symbol of love in which case Homer is the rose or love for Emily. Emily s father wanted the best for her, so he thought that no one was good enough. • 10. The Horse Dealer s Daughter, By D. H. Lawrence Entertainment versus Art Literary and commercial fiction are the two types of fiction that Authors all over the world present to readers. Commercial fiction always entertains readers and this is the point, to provide a story that anyone can enjoy. Literary fiction does not offer a clear way for one to understand and literary fiction is not created to be understood. Literary fiction makes readers do all the work and find meanings all by oneself. It is vital to be able to determine a literary work from a commercial one to fully grasp a work and the methods to determining one from another is easier than one thinks. In The Horse Dealer s Daughter, by D.H. Lawrence, the literary nature is evident early on in the story. Literary fiction does not have a likeable main character or protagonist; in the story one doesn t know who the main character is and of the choices none are likable. All of the brothers in the story make fun of the sister so one wouldn t like any of those choices, even with the sister she has no obvious characteristics nor does she perform any actions for her to be considered likeable She would have been good looking, save for the impressive fixity of her fact, bull dog, as her brothers called it. (Lawrence 507) Literary fiction also does not have a clear theme or purpose; the story doesn t have any lesson to be taught or point to be drawn, however it is simply telling a story. Literary fiction leads the audience to do the thinking for themselves, nothing is clear cut or obvious. The ending of the story leaves one confused and gives one the option to choose what ending the story has But she only sobbed terribly, and cried: I feel awful. I feel awful. I feel I m horrible to you. No, I want you, I want you, was all he answered, blindly with that terrible intonation which frightened her almost more than her horror lest he should not want her. • 11. The Wild West Rides Into The Sunset Essay Connor Lucas ENG 3080J Hollis February 20, 2014 The Wild West Rides Into The Sunset Have you ever read a text that included items such as a bold cowboy, trusty horse, beautiful female, or a dark villain in a dry, isolated, and undeveloped setting? If so, it s a great possibility that you were reading a classic Western. Many readers of this genre would describe its stereotypes as what I listed above. You can almost always find that protagonist cowboy hero, who tends to be a good looking and sharp character that fights the dirty, rugged, evil villain in an epic climax while trying to save his gorgeous and innocent lady. The setting is often a flat, unpopulated, and undeveloped town, surrounded by mountains. The Western genre played a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Kolb describes Marshal Jack Potter as a nervous unarmed honeymooner, who rides a train instead of a horse (98). In the story, Potter is described as wearing a new black suit that most likely was purchased in San Antonio (23). This gives the reader the idea that the East influenced the West a great deal, considering a hard nosed, sharp shooting town hero most likely should not be wearing a new suit that was made in the East. The stereotypical western criminal is mean, dirty, selfish, and constantly stirring up trouble. In The Bride, your criminal is Scratchy Wilson. However, as Kolb describes, the difference between Scratchy and most other Western villains is that Scratchy s main crime seems to be that he can t hold his liquor (98). The eastern culture is brought up again in the story through Scratchy s clothes. You d expect to visualize a rough and dirty character whose soul is as dark as his clothes. With Scratchy, you get a criminal wearing a maroon colored flannel shirt that was made in New York (24). Crane uses these characters to portray an idea to his reader s that the influence the East has on the West is far greater than the average person would expect. • 12. Immanuel Kant And The Kant Essay Immanuel Kant Lying Chiyane Peterson MCCC Ethics MW 1:30pm Parviz Dehghani Lying the one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him just assumed that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit. (Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere. (Dehghani,Ethics) We know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the person will be truthful. • 13. The Influence of Too Much Violence on Children In April 2008 at Taylor Elementary, a K 5 school in Hunting Park, a male child held a knife against the throat of a classmate and threatened to cut off his head if he snitched (Snyder 1). This student, like many other kindergarten students across the world, is extremely violent. This stems from the student s violent environment in which he is being raised. Hunting Park, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a neighborhood filled with poverty and most importantly a high violent crime rate. Children who witness domestic and neighborhood violence become more violent themselves because they become less sensitive to violence, accept violence as normal behavior, and are also at risk for severe behavioral and psychological problems. When people, especially children, witness a recurring amount of violence over an extended period of time, they become less sensitive to violence. One of the largest sources, if not the largest source, for witnessing a recurring amount of violence is the media. Every day 21 kids kill someone or commit suicide, and many more are left permanently disabled or injured. When the general public hears stories similar to this told on the news, it should have an effect on them. They might think about those stories sometime throughout the day, because the stories are horrible things to hear about. The news tells stories involving child/teen violence, or just inhumane acts of violence in general, so often that a viewer doesn t think twice about it. The loss ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Pros And Cons Of School Uniforms Should students wear school uniforms? This is a topic that has been thoroughly argued, yet to no prevail on either side. I believe school uniforms overall impact children and the education community negatively. There are many strong reasons to turn down this policy. These include how the uniforms effect the children and their learning, the sneakiness behind school administrations who utilize this system, and how the children feel about the uniforms. First, is how the uniforms affect the children in a negative way. I know a family just a few houses up the street whose kids go to a Catholic school. Religion set aside, they have to wear uniforms to school. Often I see them getting out of the car, ripping off their bows and ties with a sort of disgust. My friend from that family, Aaron, states on the topic, They are uncomfortable, which actually distracts me more from learning and paying attention. This shows how school uniforms affect the learning environment negatively and impact children in a negative way. Everyone has heard the phrase, if you get hurt it s your own fault. But what if you never get the chance to be hurt? You ll never learn. It s the same way with something as simple as clothing. If children wear vulgar clothing to school then you can talk to them and tell them it s wrong. It is bad preparation for the real world if we are telling children what to do, rather than letting them learn to better prepare themselves for the real world. Next, is the sneakiness behind the administration and their altered statistics. Long beach California is a town that incorporates school uniforms into their schooling. The district claims the academic success and low violence rates are due to the school uniforms. They did leave out the other improvements in their districts including, promotion of conflict resolution, peer mediation, and parental involvement. The superintendent of this district made a comment to the Harvard Education Letter stating, It is really hard to know exactly what is causing the positive effect. This shows how districts are hiding other information to promote how well uniforms fix problems when in reality, it could be many things. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in Southern ... Facing bankruptcy, the board of directors opted for a new leadership and appointed Kenneth Iverson as president and CEO. He concluded that to be able to avert bankruptcy is to exit the nuclear instrument and electronics business and rebuild the company around its subsidiary, Vulcraft, which is engaged in steel joist business. These strategies have been very effective in terms of expanding its resources as well as conceptualization of new technology (using electric arc furnace as alternative to conventional furnace) and improvement of plant efficiency thru equipment upgrades. Also the use of scrap materials has lessened the purchase of ore for steel making. Furthermore, joint ventures have given them option to join global market of steel producers. People are always in need of attention. Without attention, people do not have ways on perceiving whether or not they are loved, cared for or appreciated. And though not in this extent, people also need attention in order to feel some sense of confidence. In a crowd, people who easily attract other people are usually those who are confident about how they look and act in public. But on the contrary, the people who easily consider themselves as wallflowers are usually left with very low self esteems since the lack of attention easily entails lack of appeal and can also be lack of significance. Since media is such an inescapable part of the modern landscape it is significant that we as individuals understand how the media works and how it affects us. In this course, the nature of the media has been unraveled to reveal the ways that it has impacted society and how it has done this. This class has made me became more critical of the media in my life and now even without thinking I recognize patterns, and in some cases toxic themes in the media I consume. Looking back on this semester and what I have learned I can see that I have become more media literate in many ways, primarily in the areas of awareness and analysis. I have become more aware of the way media is constructed. Some things that have stood out to me since I have started this course is for example the other day when I flew into the ST. Louis airport after Thanksgiving break one of the monitors in baggage claim said that it was CLear Channel TV before this course I do not know what clear channel was and I knew that the entertainment business was an oligopoly but I did not realize the extent. Seeing this was a moment of realization, that what I read was real, this one company has its hands in every pot. I have also noticed how much media means to people, I was speaking to one of my friends and I mentioned that I thought marvel was better that DC and she became very upset at me. It occurred to me that being a DC comics fan was a part of her identity, before I knew that people took entertainment personally but it was not actively looking for it. I have increased my ability to analyze the media I consume, now I am more aware of the way industries target audiences. One of the easiest ways this can be seen is in commercials, advertisers make there for a specific audience, video game commercials are a good example Game of Wart has a woman in its commercials who speaks in an alluring voice and invites audiences to come join her. She is there for the male gaze, men are the desired customers that companies look for, so she is there as a way of saying that this game will make the player feel special and receive the ... • 38. Social Factors And Social Causes Of The French Revolution The French Revolution was mainly the result of social causes. In the 18th century, the social classes were categorized as the First Estate, consisting of the clergy; the Second Estate, consisting of the aristocracy; and finally the Third Estate, including every remaining citizen; from the bourgeoisie (merchants, lawyers, businessmen) all the way to the poor peasants of the land. All the members of the first two estates were privileged in law and taxation. Moreover, there was virtually no way to move up the social ladder unless you were born into it, consequently, raising anger among the bourgeoisie since, despite their equivalence in wealth as certain nobles, they still had lower living conditions than the first two estates and were considered the minority. The bourgeoisie s (middle class) ambition was a major contributor of the French Revolution. This close contact of the bourgeoisie with less educated members of the Third Estate enabled them to provide the real leadership of the Revolution when it came... (Truman et al, 131) The middle class made up the larger half of the Third Estate. With applications catering to specific functions with little or no integration between each system. In a larger sense, hospitality was hampered by legacy systems which were often incompatible and hard to update. [2] Since Stonebridge had acquired many hotels while growing, it had many old compatibility related problems. These hotels management systems are inconsistent. Invoice processing was inefficient and error prone. This process had been totally paper and manual based. Worse, aside from difficulty to find invoices, some invoices had been missing. Inconsistencies between payroll and employee time tracking management systems. • 40. The Philadelphia Police Report From A Police Department Ratcliffe, J. H., Taniguchi, T., Groff, E. R., Wood, J. D. (2011) focused on hotspots in Philadelphia. To find these hotspots the researchers used violent crimes such as homicide, aggravated assault and robberies from the Incident Transmittal System (INCT) database of the Philadelphia police report from 2006 2008. These measures have face validity since these are common violent crime that large cities have. The database used is a valid way to estimate crime, but also does have limitations. The researchers were able to use a t test with linear regression models to find the impact of footpaths while taking into consideration of extraneous influences. The actual style of policing the foot patrols did vary from community oriented to proactive policing. Ratcliffe et al,. (2011) sampled more than 200 foot patrol officers and used geographic information systems (GIS) to create randomized controls for crime hotspots. Previous studies had lacked this GIS technology, which could be a reason for different results. Results showed significant reduction of violent crime in the experimental group after 12 weeks, and when including the control group there were 53 violent crimes that were prevented. Contradicting previous findings this showed that foot patrols are actually effective in preventing violent crime in crime hotspots. When differences in the starting level of violent crime were accounted for there was no significant differences in treatment and control areas. The unit of analysis was the Voronoi network which consists of areal units. There were 120 foot patrols found which the police would have patrols in 16 hours a day, 5 days a week, and used officers recently out of the academy. These officers who are recent academy graduates may have different tactics than other officers since they may want to prove themselves and are excited to be a new police officer. This use of new officers may be a mechanism at work reducing crimes as well. The researchers used a quasi random number generator to assign and control ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Photos and Images are More Powerful than Words Essay Images are More Powerful than Words The American Heritage College Dictionary defines the term image as An optically or electronically formed representative reproduction of an object, esp. an optical reproduction formed by a lens or a mirror. This is what is more commonly referred to as a picture. The definition of a word is a sound or combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or a combination of morphemes. Even though both the tour guide and a pamphlet told everyone exactly what the organization s purpose was, the Mural actually said more than needed to be said, without the aid of any words. One can agree with Mitchell Stephens statement in By Means of the Visible: A Picture s Worth that certain pictures can put most sentences to shame (486), because the images illustrated in this Mural put, every single word that was written in the UN pamphlet or spoken by the tour guide, to shame. They gave a deeper and more spiritual meaning, that went above and beyond the mere one dimensional meaning, of the words used, both written and spoken. The Mexican Revolution By Porfirio Diaz Verdin, Ramon Khan, Kamal Santillan, Karen Research Paper The Mexican Revolution was brought on by tremendous disagreement among the Mexican people over the dictatorship of President Porfirio I. Díaz. Diaz stayed in office for 34 years. During that time, power was in the hands of only a few people. The people had no power to express their opinions or select their public officials. Wealth was also in the hands of a few people. Porfirio pushed peasants off of their lands and had business men take their land, they called the land haciendas. The dictator like rule of Porfirio I. Diaz and the want of land were the reason for fighting in the Mexican Revolution. The main antagonist of the Mexican revolution was Porfirio Diaz. Diaz became president of Mexico in 1876. He was the autocrat who took full control of Mexico for 34 years. The revolutionist wanted a democracy so they fought against his power. The political instability during this time was also a major question in Mexico. Porfirio Diaz was very corrupt. He used his power as the president to his advantage. The Mexican Constitution called for public election but Díaz and his supporters used their political and economic resources to stay in power.
