There are only 3 types of websites; resource sites, marketing sites and sites which engage the reader.
Content marketing is the strategy that differentiates the 3 types of sites. For instance, a "resource" site only contains stale information about your business or practice. By using content marketing, a website starts to rank on Google, Bing and Yahoo.

This course has evolved over the past 10 years and reviews the basics of creating, maintaining and ranking your website. SEO, using the concepts of content marketing, is the process where search engines compare and rank webpages.
Each search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) has its own SEO algorithm, a formula to rank webpages. Though each search engine has a unique algorithm, all heavily weight the content (words, articles, pages, posts) of your website to be the most important variable in ranking sites.
Content is usually in the form of text (words) for most websites. Healthcare and medical websites are no different. Other types of content can include: podcasts (audio), images (visual), video, music, etc. At this time, SEO has developed to best rank sites containing text. Using different types of content to appeal to different learners is a method to broaden your digital exposure.
Social media can be used to enhance digital identity. Not all platforms appeal to all users. Identify the platforms which may appeal to your patients before starting a particular social media campaign.
Local SEO allows your practice to rank when patients are filtering a search by location. Ranking well depends upon several factors: consistency and number of claimed review sites, SEO of your website and reviews. Healthy and active websites which rank well have heavy influence on your practice ranking with local search.

This lecture offers alternatives to a website to improve marketing exposure using podcasts, webinars, video and slide presentations.
Video is the fastest growing medium. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world (2nd to Google). Many patients prefer to learn from video versus a website. Patient education videos require only a computer/Internet camera. Creating a YouTube channel is free and offers exposure to an audience that prefers to learn from video and audio.
Podcasts appeal to patients who like to learn from audio. Podcast episodes can be downloaded and played (consumed) whenever and wherever convenient to the listener, e.g. commuting to work. For the practitioner, podcasting can be very inexpensive and offers a great alternative to writing website articles and posts.
Webinars may conducted from your home or office. Attendees simply login from any Internet connection to participate in the webinar. Webinar episodes can be recorded and then uploaded to YouTube and embedded on your website to increase exposure.
Slideshare.net is a great platform to share Power Point slide decks. Most healthcare providers are well versed with Power Point. Slideshare then allows your patient education presentations to be embedded on your website.

"Live Website Analysis" was presented at the AAO 2016. There was a short presentation on what constitutes a good website. An evaluation of several websites submitted by various attendees followed.
A good website must be easily navigated, that is, information should be no more the 2-3 clicks. The home page should be free of clutter and quickly convey the goods and services your provide.
There are other attributes which are important. Pay attention to the Home, About and Contact page.
Do you want your website to rank? If so, it must be optimized.
User experience is fast becoming an optimization variable. If it takes too long for a reader to find what they are looking for, your user experience decreases - same goes for sites which are not mobile responsive (fit on any size screen).

There are 3 basic components to creating your website.Domain: this is the “www” or your website addressHosting: refers to where your website is hosted or storedCMS = Content Management System (Wordpress.org is the best)
You should choose a URL that gives you the best SEO.Choose phrases that are meaningful.
Choose keywords that are popular search terms.
Cost of a “non-premium” URL is inexpensive. Purchase should be 5-7 years to provide “trust.” From Google’s perspective, anyone who has owned a website less than a year, or, who has purchased a domain for a year might be a spammer.
Checking availability of a domain is easy. Enter your desired URL. You will then find availability and price.
Two favorites of ours are GoDaddy and Bluehost. There are certainly many others. Most “3rd party” hosting services are one stop shopping….buy your domain and hosting for one low price. In general, most of the hosting sites are quite affordable.
Domain ownership simply means, “Who owns this domain?”You may elect to make this knowledge public. Your ownership of your practice/business is public knowledge. By default, why not disclose you own your own website? In other words, no need to pay extra.
Self hosting means that you are paying for storage of your files on a 3rd party server. Whoever you choose as your hosting company, make sure they have a greater than 99.9% uptime, 24/7 customer service and the ability to host a Wordpress.org site (most do).
One advantage of using a CMS such as WP.org is that you can easily change your website depending upon your needs.Most practices have a “resource” type site; hours of operation, about pages, directions, insurance information, etc.No marketing value, but at least a footprint on the web.With time, you may want to change or add function….no problem with CMS such as Wordpress (really anything blog).
Web design is expensive yet has no impact on your website rankings.
