11. 相應部經(尼迦耶)
Salla Sutta-A Recollection 回憶 of Death 死亡
Life 人生 is unpredictable 不能預測 and uncertain 不確定 in the
world. Life here is difficult 艱難, short 短 and bound up with
suffering.
A being 人、動物, once born 生, is going to die 死, and there is no
way out of this 沒有其它出路. When old age arrives 當我們老, or
some other cause 或其它原因, then there is death將會死亡. This
is the way it is with living beings 所有人、動物就是這樣.
Both the young and the old 青年和老人家, whether they are
foolish 迷惑 or wise 智慧, are going to be trapped 將會被死的陷阱
包圍by by death. All beings move towards death 所有人物向死亡
的路.
12. So death and aging are endemic 地方性流行病 to the
world. Therefore, the wise 智慧者 do not grieve 悲傷
seeing 看透 the nature 本質 of the world.
Peace of mind 平靜心 cannot come from weeping 流淚 and
wailing 哭泣. On the contrary, it will lead to more
suffering 辛苦 and greater pain 痛楚.
What people expect 期待 to happen is always 從來
different 不同的 from what actually 實際上 happens 發生.
From this comes disappointment 失望; this is the way the
world works 這個世界就是這樣.
Thus We Heard (p. 262-263)
13. Aging
有年紀的信號
Birthday celebrations. Each day, each year goes by, “we
are Inching closer to the casket.”
Time 時間=>change 變 (impermanence 無常)
身體:體力、頭髮、牙、皮膚、手腳、內臟
心: 記性、想 (諗)、伶俐、快?
16. Aging
關於老化
Whilst I had such power and good fortune, yet I thought:
“When an untaught 普通未經訓練者 ordinary man, who is
subject 受到 to aging, not safe 無安全 from aging, sees
another who is aged, he is shocked 震驚, humiliated 污辱
and disgusted 嫌惡; for he forgets that he himself is no
exception 例外. But I too am subject to aging, not safe
from aging, and so it cannot befit me to be shocked,
humiliated and disgusted on seeing another who is aged.”
when I considered 深思 this, the vanity 自負 of youth
entirely left me. 佛陀
A. 3:38 增支部經

"I am old now, Ananda, & aged. My years have turned
eighty. Just as an old cart is kept going with the help of
bamboo strips, it seems to me as if the Tathagata's body is
kept going with the help of bamboo strips. The only time
the Tathagata's body feels at ease is when, not attending
to any theme at all, and with the cessation of certain
feelings, he enters & remains in the theme-less
concentration of awareness. Therefore, each of you
should remain with your self as an island, your self as your
refuge, without anything else as a refuge. Remain with
the Dhamma as an island, the Dhamma as your refuge,
without anything else as a refuge.”
23. Ven. Anuruddha was staying near Savatthi in the Dark
Forest — diseased, in pain, severely ill.
He was asked, "What (mental) dwelling are you dwelling in
so that the pains that have arisen in the body do not
invade or remain in the mind?”
25. "When I dwell with my mind well-established in the four
frames of reference, the pains that have arisen in the
body do not invade or remain in the mind. Which four?
There is the case where I remain focused on the body in &
of itself — ardent, alert, & mindful — putting aside greed
& distress with reference to the world. I remain focused
on feelings in & of themselves... mind in & of itself...
mental qualities in & of themselves — ardent, alert, &
mindful — putting aside greed & distress with reference to
the world. When I dwell with my mind well-established in
these four frames of reference, the pains that have arisen
in the body do not invade or remain in the mind."
27. King Pasenadi Kosala
SN 3.25
"I inform you, great king, I announce to you, great king: aging
and death are rolling in on you. When aging and death are
rolling in on you, great king, what should be done?"
"As aging and death are rolling in on me, lord, what else should
be done but Dhamma-conduct, right conduct, skillful deeds,
meritorious deeds?
"So it is, great king! So it is, great king! As aging and death are
rolling in on you, what else should be done but Dhamma-
conduct, right conduct, skillful deeds, meritorious deeds?"
29. Perhaps people will one day see death not as an enemy,
but as a dear friend waiting at the very end of a party
they call life.
From birth as a requisite condition, then old age and
death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair
come into play. Such is the origination of this entire mass
of stress and suffering.
