This document discusses implementing the 5S methodology in a hostel room to improve organization and cleanliness. The 5S methodology includes five steps: (1) Sort, (2) Set in Order, (3) Shine, (4) Standardize, and (5) Sustain. It provides instructions for applying each step in a hostel room, such as removing all items and sorting what is needed from unneeded, designating storage areas, deep cleaning, and establishing standards to maintain the new organization system. 2. 5 S – INTRODUCTION
 5-S is a Japanese Tool.
 5-S represents 5 disciplines to maintain visual at
workplace. It is a fundamental activity to improve
business. 5-S represents systematic approach for
productivity, quality and safety improvement in all
types of business. It is one of the important
approaches in journey of continuous improvement.
 5S
simplifies
and
organizes
our
work
environment, reduces waste and non-value activity
while improving quality efficiency and safety. And a
well organized workplace motivates people.

3. 5-S uses five Japanese Disciplines
 5-S uses five Japanese disciplines .





1) Seiri (Sort)
2) Seiton (Set)
3) Seiso (Shine)
4) Seiketsu (Standardization)
5) Shitsuke (Sustain)
These five techniques are helpful in organizing work
place day to day.

 Remove all the items that we have stuffed inside
and put outside in other place.
 NEXT
 Yes ,all the items like
Bed, Table, Chair, Books, Notebooks, Clothes, Laptop, Cosmetics, other items in
Almirah/Cupboard.

 Now Sort out all those which are needed and those
which aren’t .
 Discard those which aren’t needed and segregate
those which are needed .
 Rearrange them systematically outside the room
, only those which are needed as per their
frequency.
 Well , We have completed the first step
‘SEIRI(SORT)”

 NEXT
 Look at room , Is it designed in such a way, that
every item can get separate place?
 Are there separate Shelves/Places and how have we
organized it.
 Earmark the Shelves /Places /areas where we want
to keep our items.
 Remove useless Papers/Books/Note-book and
other accessories like cosmetics/clothes etc.
 Remove all defected Electronic Gadgets and items.

 Now , In such a way, we have completed the
second of the 5-S i.e. ‘Seiton (Systematic
Arrangement’).
 Next
 To implement the Next step of Spic and Span .We
need to clean the room every day just before we
retire for the day and also check before we start off.
This ensures that no unwanted items are left in the
room.

 NEXT
 Cleaning
and
washing
on
floor, walls, ceiling, shelves into our room.
 Do not stuff the room with items like useless
papers/bottles/cosmetics/expired
medicine
etc, which would not be used by us again
(presuming we don’t need them in future). Throw
it into the nearest DUST BIN.
 Remove the filled registers to avoid unnecessary
piling of notebooks.

 Clean the dust from the books and registers by wiping





it from dry cloth.
Clean and wash the college bag once a week if it is
washable.
Try to keep the surrounding clean to keep our self
healthy and safe
Always use disinfectant while washing floors, walls etc
Keep our self clean and hygienic by regular bath to
keep our self free from illness.
Now we have completed the forth of the 5-S i.e. ‘Seiso
(Cleanness)’.

 Put Bed, Table, Chair in the suitable place in our room.
• Put cleaned door-mat, bed sheet, table-mat on its related
places.
• Put the clothes, Cosmetics, books, Notebook, Shoes in
shelves of cupboard.
• Books/Notebooks, Electronic Gadgets put in near by
places/table.
• For standardization, Paste some kind of slogans like•
•
remove shoes at the door, No Smoking etc., through which
make our room clean ever.
Be sensitive to the items that we carry!!
Now we have completed the forth of the 5-S i.e. ‘Seiketsu
(Standardization’).

 Keep the regular usable items on their proper places




after use.
Keep soap , shampoo, towel etc. at their appropriate
places after every usage to save time.
Try to keep the items according to the frequency of
use.
Regular usable items should be kept at the nearby
places to save time wasted in searching.
Keeping the things at the appropriate place will avoid
any probability of accident or mishappening.

 Now make a resolution that we will always follow
the four steps adopted.
 Bring in a sense of SELF DISCIPLINE
 Create awareness in others to practice 5-S
 NEXT
