The Cold War developed from mutual antagonism between the ideologies of the US and USSR. It occurred in 7 phases from 1946 to 1991, characterized by periods of increased tension and arms buildup, as well as attempts at cooperation and arms control. The ideological differences and mutual fear between the two superpowers led to the formation of opposing military alliances and a global power struggle that divided the world for over 40 years.
