atmosphere was that of the Academy Awards in CY Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State University for
the 31st IHSSAAll State Large Group Speech Festival on Saturday, February 18. Students sat on the

Jewish tradition holds the preservation of human life as one of its supreme moral values. It takes
precedence over virtually all other moral values to the degree that only the violation of three cardinal
sins (idolatry, adultery and murder) in limited circumstances can claim precedence over the imperative
to preserve life. Nevertheless, Judaism acutely linked to the reality of the human condition realizes
there are circumstances in which a person might long for death. The Talmud reports of Rabbi Judah
the Prince suffering great pain from an illness and his righteous maidservant praying for his death as
an end to his suffering. At least one commentator cites this passage as an approbation of praying for
the merciful death for one suffering in pain from illness.
Even with this appreciation of our human reality, Jewish Law does not reduce the mandate that we
preserve life, even under the most challenging conditions. While rabbinic authorities, ancient and
modern, debate whether under limited circumstances medical treatments may be withheld from a
suffering person (thus, no longer delaying an inevitable death), it is abundantly clear that one may not
proactively hasten death. At the same time, Jewish Law would endorse the aggressive palliation of

been close since they were younger, due to their flaws. Eric is overweight and Sarah has burn scars
covering her entire face. As the two grew older, Eric lost his weight when he joined the school
competitive swim team. Meanwhile, Sarah Byrnes still remained as what her classmates called ugly .
The two were each other s best friends, and Eric even stayed fat for a whole year for her. Sarah Byrnes
believed that if Eric became skinny, then he would have more friends, and eventually forget about her.
With the help of others, it is found that Sarah Byrnes was abused by her father, Virgil Byrnes, when
she was three, causing the burns on her face. She has been kept in the hospital for thinking about
committing suicide for the entirety of the story. Sarah is not talking to anybody, even her best friend,

Throughout the events of the novel, Ralph tries to keep his power. Jack works to gain power and the
role of chief. Piggy, as opposed to Jack and Ralph, works to achieve respect. In the novel Lord of the
Flies, William Golding effectively conveys the idea that the responsibility of leadership can weigh
heavily upon those unfit for power, resulting in fractures throughout society.
The effect of authority is reflected in the character of Ralph, through his struggle to maintain his
power. After the hunters brag about killing their first pig, Ralph declares there was a ship. Out there.
You said you d keep the fire going and you let it out! (74). The authority he wields over the boys is
beginning to diminish through the boy s refusal to follow his orders. Ralph makes it clear they must
keep a fire burning in order to be rescued, yet the boys who are tasked with tending to it disobey their
command. As Ralph s power is pulled away from him, the majority of the boys turn to a leader who
they believe will protect them. During Ralph s flee from the savage camp, Sam and Eric warn Ralph
that they re going to hunt you down
to morrow (209). Ralph has been completely stripped of his position as chief, and has been painted as

My reasoning is that many forms social deviance are acts which ultimately are extremely subjective or
relative in terms of their nature. For example, saying things that are perceived as racist in nature is
widely viewed as being deviant of the social norms since they are incredibly offensive in nature. Thus
many areas even have created laws to combat such racist speech since it defies the social order and
also is said to incite people. However such deviance of social norms (by saying racist comments) is
quite relative since there are many contexts where such supposed racist speech could be within what
some would call the social norm depending on how such speech is handled. One example that I think
of would be Ice Cube s classic album Death Certificate which contains the song Black Korea. The
song was removed from the United Kingdom s release as they felt that the content of the song would
be classified as a violation of laws against racial incitement (which is viewed as being against the
social norm in the area). In some sense finding the song to be a deviant of social standards is quite
normal since the language of the song is very strong and includes language that obviously would be
