Literature Review (Review of Related Literature - Research Methodology)Dilip Barad
Literature Review or Review of Related Literature is one of the most vital stages in any research. This presentation attempts to throw some light on the process and important aspects of literature review.
A literature review is a
“critical analysis of a segment of a published body of knowledge through summary, classification, and comparison of prior research studies, reviews of literature, and theoretical articles”

19. structuring content
A literature review has an overall logical structure
•eg conceptual, topical, methodological, chronological
The overall structure is focused on ‘themes’ or ‘ideas’ rather
than individual authors or studies. It is:
•NOT a series of summaries
•a synthesis of sources into a coherent discussion or argument.
A lit review near the beginning of a proposal or report
should:
• convince the reader that the research/ project is necessary
•develop a clear line of argument that leads the reader to the
research question or the project need.
•will help the reader predict this question or need
The flow of ideas is likely to go move from
•general to specific, or broad to narrow
•making general points about a variety of studies/practices towards
a more detailed discussion of key information closely related to
your project.

)
University of Canberra provides the above recommendations
The key aspect is relevance – did you check with your supervisor on this.
The main focus for this week is:
Beginning your literature review
Areas in red are those where the plans overall were lacking.
Those students who receive a fail grade need to resubmit their plan to their supervisor to reach a satisfactory standard.

I read the articles with some pens, an outliner and Post-it notes. Everytime I spot something of interest, I outline it and write it down on a Post-it note. I group the notes together somehow as I go. At this point, all I have is a mess of ideas organized by a theme of some sort. The entire time I’m crafting this plan, I’m standing up and moving around, and working only with my hands. No sitting down, no computer

After that I take a look at the mess I’ve made and rearrange the notes to form a logical path. This here is the visual sketch of my writing, the plan I’m going to follow as I write. Kinda resembles a concept map a bit. And oh, here I’ve crafted actually just a part of my lit review but you can craft the entire thing at once if you feel like it. Whatever rocks your boat.
