Editor's Notes
The main focus for this week is:
Beginning your literature review
)
Literature review is about telling a story – a sort of chain story where each writer starts with a partial story – created previously by others and then expand on it……
This is what we know so far……..
Your literature review should demonstrate your knowledge in the area you have chosen. The review should also assist you in in developing your own ideas on the area and show where your research fits into the material already produced.
Think of the review as a funnel -start wide with the overview and then quickly narrow into discussing the research that relates to your specific topic.

OR
think of yourself as a film director (Rudestam and Newton, 1992). You can think of providing your audience with:
long shots to provide a solid sense of the background;
middle distance shots where the key figures and elements to be examined are brought clearly into view;
close-up shots where the precise focus of your work is pinpointed.
Lit reviews can be used in many ways
For your project – it will form part of your final report
Souce: http://www.slideshare.net/akarim717/doing-a-literature-review-6432447
The key aspect is relevance – you need to ensure that you check with your supervisor on this.
University of Canberra provides the above recommendations
When reading the work – its not simply a matter of reporting what is said in the readings – you need to use the information wisely
Explain the significance of the work or intrepret the evidence from the work
As an example – one student reads the articles with some pens, an outliner and Post-it notes. Everytime they spot something of interest, they outline it and write it down on a Post-it note. They group the notes together somehow as they go. At this point, all they have is a mess of ideas organized by a theme of some sort. The entire time they’re crafting this plan, They’re standing up and moving around, and working only with their hands. No sitting down, no computer
http://buckmantiia.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/how-to-survive-a-lit-review/
After that they a look at the mess they’ve made and rearrange the notes to form a logical path. This is the visual sketch of their writing, the plan they are going to follow as they write. Kinda resembles a concept map a bit. And oh, here they’ve crafted actually just a part of the lit review but you can craft the entire thing at once if you feel like it. Whatever rocks your boat.
