Mardi Gras Research Paper
The holidays aren t over just yet. It s time to throw me something Mister!
January 6th kicked off Carnival season also known as Mardi Gras. This year s season runs from
January 6 February 28. From now until Fat Tuesday, there will be Mardi Gras themed balls,
celebrations, parades and more happening in Shreveport, Destin, Memphis, Fort Walton Beach,
Destin, and of course New Orleans.
If Mardi Gras is a foreign concept to you or you just need a refresher, here are some definitions and
tidbits to get you up to speed:
Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. It is the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual
of fasting during the Lenten season.
Although New Orleans Mardi Gras celebrations are much more widely known, Mardi Gras in North
America actually began Mobile, AL in 1703, fifteen years before New Orleans was ... Show more

Lundi Gras is French for Fat Monday. It is the day before Mardi Gras.
The colors of Mardi Gras are purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.
King cake is the pastry of Mardi Gras. The cake is named for the three kings who visited the Christ
child. Over 300 years ago, the cake started out as a dry French bread type of dough with sugar on top
and a bean inside. Now king cakes come in the sweet brioche dough variety and also donuts filled
with several fillings, and a small plastic baby to represent baby Jesus. Tradition has it that whoever
finds the baby in the cake, is responsible for purchasing the next year s cake.
Beginning in the 18th century, runaway slaves were sometimes taken in by local Native Americans. In
homage, African Americans began to band together in tribal krewes called Mardi Gras Indians, headed
by chiefs rather than captains. Their costumes are elaborate creations of feathers and beads and the
custom is handed down from father to son.
A Tableau is a scene enacted by krewe members at a bal. It depicts the parade and/or bal

The University Of New Jersey
Dear Dr. Tracy Perron the Chair of Student Affairs,
I, Flora Ajayi, was dismissed from the Nursing program at The College of New Jersey due to my
performance in Principles of Microbiology (BIO 144) and Anatomy Physiology II (BIO 142 ), which
are major Nursing prerequisites. I take responsibility for my academic progressions and understand
the consequences and rewards of the Academic realm. The study habits that allowed me to flourish in
high school, for example, studying class notes and reviewing a week before the exam, simply did not
work in college. This forced me into a state of panic, which led me not to do well in both science
classes. Studying effectively in college is different than studying in high school due to the rigor of the
course and my attempt to process on a higher academic level. My inability to succeed in the sciences
during my spring semester, despite my early success, has allowed for both personal growth and self
reflection while repeating BIO 144 and BIO 142.
At the conclusion of both of my science classes, I would seek out a quiet study area and recall what I
had learned in each lecture. The recollection of events not only allows one to retain information in a
short time, but allows one to see both their weaknesses and strengths. Instead of working on these
weaknesses, I would focus solely on my strengths, thinking that it was the most important information
I needed to learn. This flawed reasoning is the reason why I was close, but did not meet

Capital Markets and the Investment Banking Process
Investment banks provide a wealth of critical services to our economy. One important role of the
investment bank is to assist public and private corporations in raising funds in the capital markets. A
second service is in providing strategic advisory services for mergers, acquisitions and other types of
financial transactions. They also act as intermediaries in trading for clients. Investment banks differ
from commercial banks, which take deposits and make commercial and retail loans. The focus of this
paper will be to describe the investment banking process including the function of portfolio
construction. To better understand the investment banks role it is important to distinguish between

The success of these contracts is determined by the prices of other assets such as stocks or bonds.
Options and futures comprise the riskiest of the financial assets but also offer the greatest possible
reward. A portfolio constitutes a collection of investment assets. Investments are divided into broad
asset classes. The most important decision one must make when building a portfolio is asset
allocation. The percentage of each asset class one wants to hold is more important than the individual
securities within each class. One must first decide the percentage of each class to hold. Individual risk
tolerance will play a large role in this decision. Many individuals equate risk with the likelihood of
losing money, the higher the risk the greater the chance of losing money. Investment professionals use
a broader definition of risk. They look at risk as the volatility of an asset, or how much the return
stream goes up and down over a certain time period. Commodities are more volatile than Stocks.
Stocks are more volatile than Bonds. Therefore, Commodities have more risk than Stocks, and Stocks
have more risk than Bonds. An individual s personal risk tolerance will play a major role when
deciding among asset classes. An individual willing to take on a lot of risk with the hope of a larger
return will hold a larger percentage of high risk investments such as options or futures. A different
individual with a lower tolerance for risk will have

The Enormous Growth During the Renaissance
The term Renaissance in general refers to Rebirth or Reconstruction . To be exact, the meaning came
from all the changes experienced and inventive ideas that influence during the European history. The
Renaissance occurred between the 14th and 17th century when there was revival in both learning and
culture in Europe. It began in Florence, Italy and traveled throughout other city states in Italy. It
mainly occurred in Italy due to the history of Rome and Roman Empire. The Renaissance was a
cultural movement that swept through Europe because of a diversion in significant understanding.
Italy was so wealthy that people were willing to spend their money to encourage the artists. With that
being said, the Renaissance was a time in which society experienced an enormous growth. This
development was not only financial, but also in the cultural areas. Artists and Bookman were perusing
the teachings and artwork of ancient Greece and Rome. It was a tremendous strike in many fields in
particular to art, literature, education, political science, and history of the future generation.
The Rebirth changes in the style of art and also the perspective of artists. Political changes in the
ruling class of Italy shortly before the period had led to the rulers of the major city states being new
men without much of a political history. They try to regulate themselves with noticeable display,
spectacle, including all forms of art and creativity. The artists keen to use their new

Tiered Reflection
The reflection this week asks us how we would differentiate instruction for writing a research paper in
our relative area of interest. Specifically speaking, the reflection asks for two specific differentiated
learning tasks. One of the activities must involve a tired activity, while the other can utilize any of the
strategies suggested in the lesson. For this particular reflection, I will focus my attention on an early
middle school level activity to differentiate on writing a research paper. To begin the lesson, I would
complete a diagnostic assessment to see the background knowledge of research writing. For the tiered
activity, I would split students into three groups the first having limited to no knowledge of research
writing, the second having some knowledge of the topic, and the third having a solid understanding of
the research writing process. Each student will receive a graphic organizer that they will use to assist
with the note taking, outlining, and thesis of their paper making this the constant among all groups. To
differentiate, group 1 or the group with the most limited knowledge will randomly pick from a pre
selected list of animals to research. This group will receive pre printed ... Show more content on

Students would receive an editing checklist and copy editing/proofreading mark list to help with
highlighting inaccuracies on other classmates papers. This group will contain a mixture of students
from all three tiered groupings, as to ensure a variety of background and content knowledge.
Additionally, group 1 and group 2 students will have an opportunity to see how group 3 students
structure their work. Lastly, students will not be paired with other students that have the same animal

Christian Teachings Concerning Racism
Racism can be defined by the formula prejudice + power = racism. Racism is when racial prejudice is
turned into action that harms others. Racism is the belief that one race of people is superior to another
because of their colour or race. Racism is simply based on the colour of a person s skin. Racism is
destructive and it disembowels people by shattering their identity. It destroys community cohesion and
creates divisions in society. It is the opposite of the democratic principle of equality and the right of all
people to be treated fairly. Racism is an enormous problem in society today; it is causing much
conflict in many parts of the world.
The origin of racism originated in the 18th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is estimated that there are 140,0002 racist attacks in Britain every year purely due to the colour of
someone s skin. Many of these attacks were not reported to the police. The reported racist attacks rose
107%3 in 2000. Beatings, firebombing, and excrement pushed through letterboxes, are just some of
the actions that having a different colour of skin can lead to. Government figures and statistics show
that people from ethinic minorities are more likely to have a worse experience in the criminal justice
system and that 43% 1 of the people that the government surveyed felt that there was more racism
now than five years ago. The statistics also showed that black people were eight times, and Asians
three times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people in 2001/02. The Church of
England Board for social responsibility also said in relation to this
Young people from ethinic minorities fear the police. They do not respect them. Their fear springs
from experience; they are often stopped in the streets questioned and searched; many are racially
abused; some are beaten in police custody.
The figures also show that black people were four times more likely to be arrested than white people
or any other minority ethnic group. There have even been brutal murders. In 2001, Shiblu Rahman,

Authoritative Parenting Styles Paper
This paper describes how authoritarian, authoritative and permissive parenting styles affects the
behavior of children. There are negative and positive effects that these parenting styles have on the
behavior that children develop. While initially this paper expresses the positive and negative effects,
this paper will also give the most effective and successful parenting styles in terms of a higher positive
youth development (PYD). Also, the parenting styles are tested by Lerner s five C s to show which
parenting styles are more successful in showing higher PYD levels. Research suggests that children
from specific types of parenting styles are more likely to have better attitudes towards education and

Kiadarbandsari, Madon, Hamson and Mehdinezhad Nouri expressed that authoritative parents display
warmth and positive behaviors while setting strict rules and boundaries (2016). Authoritative parents
and their children develop the healthiest relationship because of the support and discipline that these
parents show towards their children (Chang, 2007). In these authoritative relationships, the child is
encouraged through positive behavior. This helps the child develop a high self esteem while building
confidence. In terms of education, authoritative parenting is the most motivation parenting style.
Authoritative parenting yields high academic success in adolescent children and progresses later
through adulthood (Strage Brandt, 1999). Abiding by the five C s, authoritative parenting promotes an
adolescent child s competence, confidence, caring, connection and character. Therefore, authoritative
parental styles yield the highest level of PYD in children (Kiadarbandsari, Madon, Hamson

Tecumsehs confederation Essay
Tecumseh was a very significant Native American who gave his life for what he believed. He knew
that the Americans were a tremendous threat to all Indian tribes, and realized that the Indians would be
destroyed one by one if not united. Tecumseh created a confederation of thirty two tribes in hopes that
the Americans would recognize their borders and thus put a halt to westward expansion. His
confederation may have succeeded if it were not for the mistakes made by his brother, Laulewasika,
the Americans violent actions towards the Indian tribes, and the unwillingness of the different tribes to
cooperate.
Tecumseh was born in March of 1768. His real name was Tecumtha, which meant quot;panther lying

Tecumseh fell in love Rebecca and soon asked her to marry him. She told him she would if he would
give up his Indian heritage and come live with her as an American (Blodgett). Tecumseh took a month
to make up his mind and finally decided that he could not abandon his people. It broke his heart, but
he told her that he could not marry her and they went their separate ways (Patriot 147).
Tecumseh s childhood greatly influenced how he acted as an adult. He knew that the Americans had to
be stopped but he did not want to fight them. When fighting was the only choice, he had a reputation
for his mercy. He despised the torture of prisoners and other cruel actions done by both sides during
warfare. He was an honest man, and was trusted by both the Americans and Indians (Dictionary 1125).
Tecumseh felt that the Americans were weakening his people by introducing them to liquor and by
over hunting the animals in order to attain their furs (Blodgett). They were also a huge threat to the
Indians because they were constantly taking more and more land away from single tribes. The
Americans would seek out small, weak tribes and offer them money and goods for land which was not
even theirs. The tribes all shared the land, and Tecumseh felt that no one chief could sell away the land
(Blodgett). He believed that by creating a confederation of all the Indian tribes, equaling the American
states, the government would be forced to recognize them as a united body and

Analysis Of The Book The Secret Life Of Bees
Reading Response Kaitlyn Baker
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The biggest pull factor that brought me to reading The Secret Life of Bees, is the fact that it is set in a
time when racial separation was very much still alive in America. So when I began my journey on
reading the novel, it was quickly clear that I was going to thoroughly enjoy it. The story follows a
young white girl, Lily, whose life revolves around unravelling the faded memory of her killing her
mother, and her new life with her abusive father. It is the story of Lily blossoming into adolescence, in
a time where racial separation is still a big issue. Lily s journey to find something, anything, about her
mother s death is something I think is a large part of why this novel is so mesmerizing to read. Lily s
loyalty of trying to piece it together makes this story moving, but not depressing. I think it is uplifting,
full of heart, inspiring, and warm. I think Kidd, the author, has perfectly captured the awkward
restlessness of a teenager, longing for love, yearning to discover, but at the same time fearful of what
truth could emerge. Seeing Lily s almost desperate longing for any kind of a mother figure is
something that truly broke my heart. It made me think about how I am so blessed in my life to have
such a strong mother figure, and I hope no one has to go through life without some kind of motherly
guidance. I often got the feeling of Lily s deep desire for nurturance, which can be owed to the

American Revolution 1763
Discuss some of the events that begin to divide England and its American colonies from 1763 through
1776.
The basic premise of the thirteen colonies break with England was the development of capitalism in
them. The American Revolution was an event of historical patterns prepared by previous development
of the colonies. The immediate cause, which caused a mass movement against the mother country in
the 60s, and then a revolutionary war against it in 1775, was the policy of increased pressure and
oppression, that England was carried out in the colonies after the Seven Years War.
In 1763, King George III issued a proclamation forbidding the colonization of land located west of the
Allegheny Mountains.

current engineering design can be improved. Throughout this RoPE is a reflection of my numerous

The Rise Of The Scientific Revolution
The Scientific Revolution made a greater impact on western history then the Enlightenment because
of two main reasons, the printing press and the scientific method. First off, the printing press changed
society in many ways, from the enlightenment to present day. The printing press spread around the
new beliefs and ideas of the enlightenment, for example, many books like Dialogue Concerning the
Two Chief World Systems , Starry Messenger , and On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies
became accessible due to the invention of the press. These ideas became known to many, and people
started to think for their own and create their own beliefs, with logic and doubt to ancient ideas such
as church teachings. To further prove the impact of

The Decision Put Forward By Robert S. Kaplan
In the following essay I will be looking at the arguments put forward by Robert S. Kaplan and others
on why management accounting techniques had lost their relevance to organisations by the 1980s.
Since the 1980s new management accounting techniques have been developed, I will be looking at
two recent developments in management accounting and assessing whether they have sufficiently
addressed the concerns raised by Kaplan and if they have improved the usefulness of management
accounting in organisations. Kaplan and Johnson believe that the origin of modern management
accounting is traced to the emergence of managed, hierarchal businesses in the early 19th century. The
need for planning and control arose in textile mills where cost of product was allocated to worker
productivity, raw material use and plant layout. It was because of the factory locations being so far
away for the head offices that an information system was required to be used as a judge of efficiency
of the factory workers. The rapid growth of railroads established performance measures in the form of
cost per ton mile, cost per passenger per mile and ratio of operating expenses to revenue (Waweru,
2010). Shortly afterwards the mass production of steelworks introduced direct cost measures and
standard costing. From this we can see that management accounting evolved as a tool to motivate and
evaluate the efficiency/effectiveness of internal processes. Kaplan and Johnson didn t believe that
management accounting

To Room Nineteen Crytical Analysis
_ To Room Nineteen _
I plan to argue To Room Nineteen by Doris Lessing for an audience of professors interested in the
field of psychology and it s affect on women s lives, stating that the cause of suicide for Ms. Dubois is
not because of the social judgments and perception negatively that impacted Susan s domestic
responsibilities but rather the lack of emotion within her life and her relationship with her husband,
because she could live up to the ideals valued by culture and beliefs but deep down she married for the
benefit of others and no love in their relationship or with her children.
Traditionally in the mid twentieth century, women held various duties that were crucial to keep their
households intact. Most have sacrificed much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also Sophie, the Rawlings household worker, replaced Susan s position in the family. Ever since
Sophie was welcomed into the family, she has been more of a mother, wife, and mistress of the house
than Susan, which caused her to feel out of place. She took lunch with Mrs. Parkes, Sophie, Sophie s
Italian friend Maria, and her daughter Molly, and felt like a visitor. (2777) It gives her the impression
that she was invisible and separated from her family. In addition, her four children require her
complete attention to tend for them so that they would grow to be strong and healthy adults. She was
breaking her part of the bargain and there was no way of forcing her to keep it: that her spirit, her soul,
should live in this house, so that people in it could grow like plants in water, and Mrs. Parkes remain
content in their service. (2772) As long as she s their mother, she will continuously put all her energy
to raise her children. She could not deliver all these requests to nurture her children, so she decides to
abandon her duties. Seclusion is a major aspect that influences a person to become odd and bizarre.
Women s freedom and liberation are restrained because of the principles followed by customary
lifestyles. Doris Lessing draws extensively on women s inner, private experiences and on their
departure from the unsatisfactory reality of life in an alienated and alienating society. (Rula Quawas)

As of now, most people, including yourself, are probably aware about the mishap with Dave Eggers

domestic violence and rage with Abdulrahman Zeitoun beating his wife with extreme measures.
Controversy was clearly evident upon whether or not Zeitoun should be allocated to upcoming juniors
in the summer after the released report. I firmly stand by prohibiting the reading of Zeitoun for

Peer Review And Writing Style Essay
When Research, Peer Review and Writing Style Meet Bringing new evidence based practice to the
bedside involves a multi faceted approach involving research, peer review, and publication of new
ideas. Research is necessary for the discovery of scientific advancement. Peer review is necessary to
ensure the integrity of research findings prior to publication. Adherence to writing principles and style

There are many advantages to hiring an outside research company; they would be able to determine

and exactly what type of product or services they are looking for. Once the marketing research
company determines all of these issues, CanGo would be more effective in marketing their product.
Issue 2: The fact that no one is tracking where the work is and who is supposed to be working on what
can lead to many problems. Some employees may be doing more work than others because they are
efficient and everything seems to land on their desk while others may be receiving credit for work
they are not doing. In the video we saw that Nick was tasked out with creating a process flow chart,
but he passed it on to someone else, and that some one pass it down to two more people. I believe in
fair and equal work between team members so they should break down the work prior to initiating any
task. There is nothing wrong with helping your teammates but not do the work for them. Passing work
like that can also lead to it getting misplaced. They should use a flow chart to track where the work is.
A Gantt chart or a document flow chart seem like a perfect fit for this occasion. The document flow
chart will trace the process flow chart document through the system to avoid it getting lost. Losing
information can also lead to

aldol reaction Essay
Aldol In this preparative lab, an aldol (trans p anisalacetophenone) was produced from the reaction
between p anisaldehyde and acetophenone with the presence sodium hydroxide. The reaction also
showed the importance of an enolate and the role it played in the mechanism. Sodium hydroxide acts
as a catalyst in this experiment and is chosen because of its basic conditions and pH. The
acetophenone carries an alpha hydrogen that has a pKa between 18 and 20. This alpha hydrogen is
acidic because of its location near the carbonyl on acetophenone. When the sodium hydroxide is
added, it deprotonates the hydrogen and creates an enolate ion. This deprotonation creates a
nucleophilic carbon that can attack an electrophilic carbon (like a parent ... Show more content on

The initial product is the beta hydroxyketone, which rapidly undergoes dehydration and creates the
final product, trans p anisalacetophenone. Technically, both the carbonyls cannot be mixed together
with sodium hydroxide to get one product. We will get a dominant product of trans p
anisalacetophenone. This reaction is an exception and we get away with it. P anisaldehyde and
acetophenone together only make one enolate. This helps our exception, but there are still two
carbonyls. With our weak base, we should be worried about acetophenone reacting with itself but we
are not. This is due to steric hindrance, like I stated earlier. Aldehydes are better electrophilic carbons
and therefore the ketone will react with the aldehyde faster than reacting with itself. It will quickly
form the product trans p anisalacetophenone because it is the favored product. We do not have to use
expensive LDA, we can use the weaker base and get away with it. The reaction took place in a conical
vial and .2mL of each of the reactant samples were added to it along with some 95% ethanol. Two
drops of NaOH were added shortly after and stirred at room temperature for fifteen minutes. The vial
was cooled in and ice bath and crystallized. Vacuum filtration was performed to filter the crude
product. The crude product was recrystallized using methanol and filtered again. We made one change

Analysis Of Inherit The Wind
Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play Inherit the Wind is a fictitious spin off of the
historical Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which hotly debated the concept of evolutionism vs.
creationism and, in general, a person s right to think. Overall this play shows the growth of many
different types of characters. One of these characters would be Rachel Brown, the reverend s daughter,
as well as Bert Cates love interest. She is torn between her love for Bert and her loyalty to her father,
the Reverend Jeremiah Brown. At the beginning of the play she fears her father and follows only what
he says. As the play progresses Rachel becomes more confidant and starts to think for herself. By the
end of the play she has created her own identity and completely separates herself from her father.
Rachel is first introduced into the play at the very beginning where we see she has gone to the jail to
visit her boyfriend Bert Cates. Rachel is very desperate to try and get Bert to just throw himself at the
mercy of the court and admit that what he did was wrong. She just wants to be with him. As she enters
the jail she speaks to Meeker saying Mr Meeker, don t let my father know I came here , This quote
portrays Rachel s character very well. She is shy and lacks confidence, obviously worried of what
would happen if her father found out she was visiting Cates, the enemy to her father at this point. She
has lived her life in fear of her father and because of she followed everything

The Treatment Goal Of 75 Year Old Male With Hypothyroidism
Management. The treatment goal of 75 year old male with hypothyroidism is to improve patient s
symptoms which will allow better adaptation to environment. The medication dose should be adjusted
to maintain serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) within the lower half of the reference range
(0.4 2.5mU/L). Treatment of hypothyroidism in elderly subjects is a common task undertaken in
general and in sub specialty practice. Treatment of hypothyroidism in elderly subjects is often
rewarding, simple and cheap (Roe, 2015).
Thyroid hormones (L thyroxine). Hypothyroidism is classically treated by oral replacement with
synthetic L thyroxine (levothyroxine). Normalization of TSH levels using levothyroxine therapy can
ameliorate the effects of comorbidities in older adults (Hennessey, 2015). It has been shown then there
is no added benefit in using combination therapy of levothyroxine and liothyronine (another synthetic
thyroid hormone supplement) (Kraut, 2015). L thyroxine (levothyroxine) monotherapy has become
the mainstay of treating hypothyroidism and allows more desirable therapy (Jonklaas, 2014). Patients
whose serum TSH levels exceed 10 mIU/L are at increased risk for heart failure and cardiovascular
mortality, and should be considered for treatment with L thyroxine (Garber, 2012). L thyroxine is
peripherally converted to free triiodothyronine (FT3), the active form of thyroid hormone. It has a half
life of 6 days and is typically administered as a once daily dose of 1.6 µg/kg

Essay on Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein
Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein
The connections between Ludwig Wittgenstein and Soren Kierkegaard as philosophers are not at all
immediately obvious. On the surface, Wittgenstein deals with matters concerning the incorrect use of
philosophical language and Kierkegaard focuses almost exclusively on answering the question how to
become a Christian . But this account belies deeper structural similarities between these men s
important works. Thus, this paper suggests that their methods, rather than exclusively content, contain
a strong parallel on which a natural and hopefully fruitful examination of their work can be based. I
claim that on at least four counts, Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein present clearly analogous form:

Kierkegaard s works are not straightforward proclamations of his philosophy: he wrote under
pseudonyms and assumed the persona of these fictional characters in his writing. Thus, one must be
careful when attributing a particular position to Kierkegaard often the view is advanced by a
pseudonym, so various inferential processes must be applied in order to substantiate a claim that
Kierkegaard really meant any statement. Foremost among the structural similarities between
Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein works is the use of indirect communication: as paradoxical as it may
sound, both authors deliberately obfuscate their philosophy for the purposes of clarifying it.
Clarification of the preceding assertion is obviously required. Each author felt that, due to inherent
properties of their subject matter, outright delineation of their conclusions would somehow be a self
contradiction. Clearly their respective subject matter, the logical structure of language and the task of
becoming a Christian, is inherently disparate. But let us examine more closely particular instances of
indirect communication from both of the philosophers with the intention of finding similarity.

A Dystopian Future in Brave New World Essay examples
Brave New World is a remarkable journey into the future wherein mankind is dehumanized by the
progress and misuse of technology to the point where society is a laboratory produced race of beings
who are clones devoid of identity only able to worship the three things they have been preconditioned
to love: Henry Ford, their idol; Soma, a wonder drug; and sex (Dusterhoof, Guynn, Patterson, Shaw,
Wroten and Yuhasz 1). The misuse of perfected technologies, especially those allowing the
manipulation of the human brain and genes, have created a pleasure seeking world where there is no
such thing as spiritual experience, just pleasures of the flesh. In the face of a transcendent religion, the

Regardless of the progress of technology, the real issue is not the capabilities and potential uses of
new sciences. The real issue, as it is in Brave New World, is that there will always exist those who use
new technologies for personal gain, evil pursuits and as an attempt to maintain power and control (like
the State does in Brave New World). The ideal concept may be a state of stability that it unchanging,
but this comes from our own internal dichotomy between a need for stability and the conflict with the
instability of being real. No state has ever achieved such a stable condition in the history of mankind
anyway, Historically, no actual political state has ever achieved stability and only a very few have
approximated it...Even so this is the aim for which all politicians and political states plan (Firchow

characteristics and behavior (like manipulating a baby s sex or sexuality), who would choose to allow
this power in only the hands of a few, powerful interests? What would stop powerful white monied
interests from trying to rid society of supposed undesirables like blacks, Hispanics, homosexuals or
even women? After all, by being able to breed children outside of the womb, some men may feel their
truly useful purpose is achievable without them. Some contend that no loss of humanity is involved in

Advertising Alcoholic Beverages to Children
Alcohol manufacturers use a variety of unscrupulous techniques to advertise alcoholic beverages to
children. Perhaps the worst example is Anheuser Busch Co., the world s largest brewer, which uses
child enticing cartoon images of frogs, dogs, penguins and lizards in ads for Budweiser beer. These
Budweiser cartoon characters are hugely popular with children, just like Joe Camel ads. A KidCom

A municipality may not, therefore, simply pass a law saying All alcohol advertising shall be
prohibited. This would clearly be an unconstitutional infringement on commercial speech, as well as
vague and overly broad. Municipalities must be selective and regulate those types of advertising
which they can prove are linked to increasing minor consumption of alcohol.
Billboards
Billboards are a major forum for alcohol advertising. Children and teenagers are regularly subjected to
these types of advertisements, but parents cannot effectively control their children s exposure to
alcohol billboards. Billboards cannot be turned off like other types of advertising. A municipality
probably may ban billboards advertising alcohol, if it can demonstrate that these billboards have an
adverse effect on minors. The Supreme Court has found that billboards are a unique form of
advertising and subject to extensive regulation. The City of Baltimore recently banned outdoor alcohol
advertising and defeated the advertiser s free speech argument in court. A federal circuit court upheld
the ban on alcohol advertising on billboards as not an unconstitutional infringement of the advertiser s
right of free speech.

Manifest Destiny And Western Expansion
Manifest Destiny
In the 19th century the settlers in America believed they had a mandate from God to expand west, this
is called the Manifest Destiny. This expansion would involve not merely territorial aggrandizement,
but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. The Manifest Destiny shaped
America throughout the years. Three main things that revolve around the Manifest Destiny are the
moon race with Russia, western expansion, and how we found more resources and advancements in
technology. Western expansion was the main topic in the Manifest Destiny, but the Manifest Destiny
was not the only thing involved with western expansion. One of the other main factors in Western
expansion was the louisiana purchase. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of
Louisiana from the French government for $15 million. The land that the bought stretched from the
Mississippi river to the Rocky mountains, and from Canada to New Orleans, it was also double the
size of the United States. James K. Polk was the 11th presidents of the United states of America. His
name is perhaps most closely associated with Manifest Destiny, because a year before he became the
president, the Manifest destiny started the embody the governing philosophy of the Polk
administration and its ardently expansionist aims. Polk s campaigning methods is the leading cause to
his victory of becoming the president of America. He campaigned on an expansionist platform,

The American s have a general distrust with the other side in a negotiation; while the Chinese believe
by building a personal relationship that the parties will work together for success. At this point it
would have been a better idea to save face and agree to the general terms of the letter of intent for the
Americans to show mutual trust with the Chinese. They eventually did sign the letter of intent, but
when publicizing the signing in the United States, no dates were stated. This was sticking with the
Chinese culture with regards to time. In China, they don t believe time is a barrier and don t put much

considerable amount of time should be invested in establishing a general climate of understanding,

The Insanity of War in Slaughterhouse Five Regarding his views on war, Albert Einstein said in 1931,

suffering in many moments and finds himself constantly helpless because of his mental state. This

the war. Vonnegut manipulates the audience s feelings towards war regarding Billy Pilgrim s insanity
as well as through Edgar Derby s doomed fate. Edgar Derby demonstrates the insanity of war through
his doomed fate despite his potential for greatness. Edgar Derby s fate is announced early on in the
novel by the narrator, who emphasizes Edgar Derby s death because [the] irony is so great... [a] whole
city gets burned down... [and] then this one American foot soldier is arrested in the ruins for taking a

to show the audience that war has no sense of what is fair because it is so brutal. Through this,
Vonnegut attempts to make the audience angry with war. During the war, Edgar Derby spends much of
his time imagining letters he would send to his wife, telling [her] he was alive and well, that she

Using quantitative and qualitative data in a study, the researcher nulls the weaknesses (Creswell,
2014). Creswell (2014) states the core assumption of this form of inquiry is that the combination of
qualitative and quantitative approaches provides a more complete understanding of a research problem
than either approach alone . Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed
methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). However, mixed
methods research also represents an opportunity to change these tensions into fresh knowledge
through discovery. A pragmatic perspective draws using diverse approaches, giving primacy to the
importance of the research problem and question, and valuing both objective and subjective

A Comparison Between the Plots of King Lear and Much Ado...
It is no revolutionary statement to say that William Shakespeare wrote some of the greatest plays of all
time. This is accepted by everyone from high schoolers to experts as fact. But everyone is always
wondering, what makes them great? Well, at the heart of every great Shakespeare play is a well
written plot. But how can one man churn out all these plays he s written, and still have new content in
each one? Aren t they all the same story to some extent? As Lindsay Smith writes, Many Shakespeare
plays, like most typical Renaissance plays, are divided into scenes and acts. There are five acts and
anywhere from three to five scenes per act. So his plays can t be all that different, right? This
statement will be examined after taking a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From here he begins to court her, hoping to marry her. Now in comparison, these plays are similar in
rising action in that both start out with a but a ripple of what is to come. But, they are vastly different
in the directions they take; Claudio has some difficulty in reaching his goal, but attains it. But for
everyone involved with King Lear, thing go downhill real fast. Also, there are both similarities and
differences in King Lear s and Much Ado about Nothing s plots in the climax. In both cases, the bad
guys ruin everything that was going well to begin with. In Much Ado, the climax happens the night
before the wedding, as Kristen Zomparelli will briefly detail. The conflict of the play fully illustrates
the detrimental flaws in the ruling system. A trick by the devious Don John to cross this marriage
convinces Leonato, Don Pedro, and Claudio that Hero is unfaithful. Completely fooled by the
deception, the men engage in slander against Hero s reputation, which in reality is completely
virtuous. Despite the fact that Hero fulfills the image of the ideal woman, she is still subject to
slanderous ruin by the patriarchy. This is a very shocking scene to watch. In King Lear, the climax
happens after the events of the play have drawn the two plots together, and Cordelia and Lear are
together again, held captive by Edmund. He mentions earlier in the play that he would kill them when
he captured them, so this

Mayan Religious Practices
The Mayan and American religious practices are alike and different in many ways. First of all, the
Mayans tend to be more religious and focus a lot on the gods, while the American religion we aren t as
religious, even though we still have a god. The second big thing to know is that the Mayans only had
themselves to rely on while the Americans today have many things to rely on, such as tools and
machines! That is part of why the Mayans are so religious, because they relied on themselves and the
gods. The Mayan religious practices consist of many different things. The Mayans believe that if the
King s and Queen s make pain and blood sacrifices then the gods will reward them will things, such as
corn from the corn god. The Mayans also have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Americans practice many different religions and have many ways of survival like the Mayans. Some
religions that are practiced in America are, Buddhist, Catholic, and Christian. Although in Americans
have different religions, each religion consists of a god. It is common for Americans to pray to their
god, but most Americans do not make pain and blood sacrifices like the Mayans did. Americas also
have a calendar but we run it a but different than the Mayans. The Americans have 1 calendar this has
12 months with 30 days in each month. There are 365 days in a year with no unlucky days. Today,
Americans write with pen, pencil, marker, etc.. we often write on paper as well. Americans have an
alphabet with each letter sounding different than one another. There are 26 letters in the English
alphabet. As the Mayans have Kings and Queens in America we have presidents who act as a ruler but
are less demanding, they keep the country running smoothly, including laws. In most jobs today we
have employees and tools to help us solve our problems, we use machines to build, whereas the
Mayans would use their hands. Today most Americans find i beautiful to have hair, straight white
teeth, and clear skin, for women it is beautiful to have longer hair and long eyelashes and thin
eyebrows, as you can see the Mayans and Americans have different perspectives on what is

An Entrepreneur Franklin s Dream
Entrepreneur Franklin Nicola dreamt of Oakland as a center for culture, art, and education. Franklin s
dream for Oakland was drastically different from the smog filled Downtown and was an ambitious
goal. However, with the help of other Pittsburgh notables: Andrew W. Mellon, Henry Frick, Andrew
Carnegie, George Westinghouse and H. J. Heinz, Nicola formed the Bellefield Company, which
constructed numerous iconic Oakland landmarks. Such ventures included: the Carnegie Museum of
Pittsburgh, the campuses of the University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute of Technology
(now Carnegie Mellon University), Forbes Field, Soldiers Sailors Memorial Hall, the Masonic Temple
(now Pitt s Alumni Hall), the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, and the ... Show more content on

In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech to Pitt students and faculty on November 2, 1966,
providing his view on riots, and The Civil Rights Movement. King provided the perspective that riots
were self defeating and that while a riot is the voice of the unheard he still has faith in the future of the
civil rights movement (Eskey). Today the university holds similar student events in the William Pitt
Union. For example, earlier this fall the University held a video conference event for students to hear
from former government contractor, Edward Snowden, and popular writer Te Nehisi Coates addressed
students, faculty, and community members just last week in regards to his work. Mr. Coates was
named one of TIME Magazine s 100 Most Influential People in 2016, and it was a great informational
event that many students took the opportunity to attend. However, in contrast the University has also
held some not so prestigious events as well. For me it is baffling to think that in the same building
where presidents stayed, and Martin Luther King Junior gave a speech, the University showed the
overly sexual and disturbing movie Sausage Party , or held a Residential Life Pillow Fight (which in
itself just seems strange to me). While the University does put on numerous educational events for
both the community and students; the William Pitt Union Student Center sees its fair share

How Should College Students Practice Meditation
Idea for experiment: Studying to see if having college student practice meditation will lower their
stress and anxiety levels
The Effects of Meditation
Blythe Houchen Stress is common among many Americans; however, stress among college students is
reported to be much higher. Many college students may not practice healthy habits to lower their stress
levels. A known method to lower stress is meditation. Meditation is not a common g practice among
college students. If college students began to practice meditation then their stress levels would likely
lower. This experiment is to test if their are positive effects to those who practice meditation. Fifty
colleges will practice mediation and we will see if this practice lowers their stress and ... Show more

The University Of New Jersey Dear Dr. Tracy Perron the Chair of Student Affairs, I, Flora Ajayi, was dismissed from the Nursing program at The College of New Jersey due to my performance in Principles of Microbiology (BIO 144) and Anatomy Physiology II (BIO 142 ), which are major Nursing prerequisites. I take responsibility for my academic progressions and understand the consequences and rewards of the Academic realm. The study habits that allowed me to flourish in high school, for example, studying class notes and reviewing a week before the exam, simply did not work in college. This forced me into a state of panic, which led me not to do well in both science classes. Studying effectively in college is different than studying in high school due to the rigor of the course and my attempt to process on a higher academic level. My inability to succeed in the sciences during my spring semester, despite my early success, has allowed for both personal growth and self reflection while repeating BIO 144 and BIO 142. At the conclusion of both of my science classes, I would seek out a quiet study area and recall what I had learned in each lecture. The recollection of events not only allows one to retain information in a short time, but allows one to see both their weaknesses and strengths. Instead of working on these weaknesses, I would focus solely on my strengths, thinking that it was the most important information I needed to learn. The percentage of each asset class one wants to hold is more important than the individual securities within each class. One must first decide the percentage of each class to hold. Individual risk tolerance will play a large role in this decision. Many individuals equate risk with the likelihood of losing money, the higher the risk the greater the chance of losing money. Investment professionals use a broader definition of risk. They look at risk as the volatility of an asset, or how much the return stream goes up and down over a certain time period. To be exact, the meaning came from all the changes experienced and inventive ideas that influence during the European history. The Renaissance occurred between the 14th and 17th century when there was revival in both learning and culture in Europe. It began in Florence, Italy and traveled throughout other city states in Italy. It mainly occurred in Italy due to the history of Rome and Roman Empire. The Renaissance was a cultural movement that swept through Europe because of a diversion in significant understanding. For this particular reflection, I will focus my attention on an early middle school level activity to differentiate on writing a research paper. • 11. Analysis Of The Book The Secret Life Of Bees Reading Response Kaitlyn Baker The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd The biggest pull factor that brought me to reading The Secret Life of Bees, is the fact that it is set in a time when racial separation was very much still alive in America. So when I began my journey on reading the novel, it was quickly clear that I was going to thoroughly enjoy it. The story follows a young white girl, Lily, whose life revolves around unravelling the faded memory of her killing her mother, and her new life with her abusive father. It is the story of Lily blossoming into adolescence, in a time where racial separation is still a big issue. Lily s journey to find something, anything, about her mother s death is something I think is a large part of why this novel is so mesmerizing to read. Lily s loyalty of trying to piece it together makes this story moving, but not depressing. I think it is uplifting, full of heart, inspiring, and warm. I think Kidd, the author, has perfectly captured the awkward restlessness of a teenager, longing for love, yearning to discover, but at the same time fearful of what truth could emerge. Seeing Lily s almost desperate longing for any kind of a mother figure is something that truly broke my heart. It made me think about how I am so blessed in my life to have such a strong mother figure, and I hope no one has to go through life without some kind of motherly guidance. I often got the feeling of Lily s deep desire for nurturance, which can be owed to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Decision Put Forward By Robert S. Kaplan In the following essay I will be looking at the arguments put forward by Robert S. Kaplan and others on why management accounting techniques had lost their relevance to organisations by the 1980s. Since the 1980s new management accounting techniques have been developed, I will be looking at two recent developments in management accounting and assessing whether they have sufficiently addressed the concerns raised by Kaplan and if they have improved the usefulness of management accounting in organisations. Kaplan and Johnson believe that the origin of modern management accounting is traced to the emergence of managed, hierarchal businesses in the early 19th century. The need for planning and control arose in textile mills where cost of product was allocated to worker productivity, raw material use and plant layout. It was because of the factory locations being so far away for the head offices that an information system was required to be used as a judge of efficiency of the factory workers. The rapid growth of railroads established performance measures in the form of cost per ton mile, cost per passenger per mile and ratio of operating expenses to revenue (Waweru, 2010). Shortly afterwards the mass production of steelworks introduced direct cost measures and standard costing. From this we can see that management accounting evolved as a tool to motivate and evaluate the efficiency/effectiveness of internal processes. (2777) It gives her the impression that she was invisible and separated from her family. In addition, her four children require her complete attention to tend for them so that they would grow to be strong and healthy adults. She was breaking her part of the bargain and there was no way of forcing her to keep it: that her spirit, her soul, should live in this house, so that people in it could grow like plants in water, and Mrs. Parkes remain content in their service. Passing work like that can also lead to it getting misplaced. They should use a flow chart to track where the work is. A Gantt chart or a document flow chart seem like a perfect fit for this occasion. The document flow chart will trace the process flow chart document through the system to avoid it getting lost. • 25. aldol reaction Essay Aldol In this preparative lab, an aldol (trans p anisalacetophenone) was produced from the reaction between p anisaldehyde and acetophenone with the presence sodium hydroxide. The reaction also showed the importance of an enolate and the role it played in the mechanism. Sodium hydroxide acts as a catalyst in this experiment and is chosen because of its basic conditions and pH. The acetophenone carries an alpha hydrogen that has a pKa between 18 and 20. This alpha hydrogen is acidic because of its location near the carbonyl on acetophenone. When the sodium hydroxide is added, it deprotonates the hydrogen and creates an enolate ion. This deprotonation creates a nucleophilic carbon that can attack an electrophilic carbon (like a parent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The initial product is the beta hydroxyketone, which rapidly undergoes dehydration and creates the final product, trans p anisalacetophenone. Technically, both the carbonyls cannot be mixed together with sodium hydroxide to get one product. We will get a dominant product of trans p anisalacetophenone. This reaction is an exception and we get away with it. P anisaldehyde and acetophenone together only make one enolate. This helps our exception, but there are still two carbonyls. With our weak base, we should be worried about acetophenone reacting with itself but we are not. This is due to steric hindrance, like I stated earlier. Aldehydes are better electrophilic carbons and therefore the ketone will react with the aldehyde faster than reacting with itself. It will quickly form the product trans p anisalacetophenone because it is the favored product. We do not have to use expensive LDA, we can use the weaker base and get away with it. The reaction took place in a conical vial and .2mL of each of the reactant samples were added to it along with some 95% ethanol. Two drops of NaOH were added shortly after and stirred at room temperature for fifteen minutes. The vial was cooled in and ice bath and crystallized. Vacuum filtration was performed to filter the crude product. The crude product was recrystallized using methanol and filtered again. • 26. Analysis Of Inherit The Wind Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play Inherit the Wind is a fictitious spin off of the historical Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which hotly debated the concept of evolutionism vs. creationism and, in general, a person s right to think. Overall this play shows the growth of many different types of characters. One of these characters would be Rachel Brown, the reverend s daughter, as well as Bert Cates love interest. She is torn between her love for Bert and her loyalty to her father, the Reverend Jeremiah Brown. At the beginning of the play she fears her father and follows only what he says. As the play progresses Rachel becomes more confidant and starts to think for herself. By the end of the play she has created her own identity and completely separates herself from her father. Rachel is first introduced into the play at the very beginning where we see she has gone to the jail to visit her boyfriend Bert Cates. Rachel is very desperate to try and get Bert to just throw himself at the mercy of the court and admit that what he did was wrong. She just wants to be with him. As she enters the jail she speaks to Meeker saying Mr Meeker, don t let my father know I came here , This quote portrays Rachel s character very well. On the surface, Wittgenstein deals with matters concerning the incorrect use of philosophical language and Kierkegaard focuses almost exclusively on answering the question how to become a Christian . But this account belies deeper structural similarities between these men s important works. Thus, this paper suggests that their methods, rather than exclusively content, contain a strong parallel on which a natural and hopefully fruitful examination of their work can be based. Kierkegaard s works are not straightforward proclamations of his philosophy: he wrote under pseudonyms and assumed the persona of these fictional characters in his writing. Thus, one must be careful when attributing a particular position to Kierkegaard often the view is advanced by a pseudonym, so various inferential processes must be applied in order to substantiate a claim that Kierkegaard really meant any statement. Foremost among the structural similarities between Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein works is the use of indirect communication: as paradoxical as it may sound, both authors deliberately obfuscate their philosophy for the purposes of clarifying it. Clarification of the preceding assertion is obviously required. Each author felt that, due to inherent properties of their subject matter, outright delineation of their conclusions would somehow be a self contradiction. Clearly their respective subject matter, the logical structure of language and the task of becoming a Christian, is inherently disparate. But let us examine more closely particular instances of indirect communication from both of the philosophers with the intention of finding similarity. By indirection, find direction out.
