This document describes a student's experiments designing skateboard decks. In the first experiment, the student created a black board with a gold Nike logo and central image of a sponsored athlete. A border and name were added. In the second experiment, a funky central image and gold border were used. The student reflects that they will include logos, central images, and borders in the final product. A third experiment features a bear-themed design with curved lettering and rose. The student reflects they will keep the royal color theme and creative themed designs in the final product.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. Process
This is an experiment for a skateboard deck so that I can get the hang of
creating other boards. I first got a plain board from images and tinted it
black but I turner the opacity down so that wood is still visible. I then
added a gold Nike tick at the top which is I think is a good location for a
logo. I then found an image of someone sponsored by Nike and put it in
the centre of the board. Using the blur tool I made him stand out from the
rest of the image. I added his name ‘Tiger Woods’ just below in white as it
stands out from the black very well. Finally I added a gold border to the
image and name as they looked out of place and didn’t blend in with the
board but now it looks very professional and like a legit board.
3. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• In my final product I will use the same layout as I have done on this one but different images. For example
I will locate my logo at the top as I think it looks good there. Will also have an image as the centre graphic
as it makes the board more eye-catching and slick. Finally I like the idea of having a gold border around the
image as it is similar to my royal theme.
4. Process
This is another experiment of a skateboard, on
this I just chose to put an image of a funky
design in the centre with a range of colour
standing out from the black. I used the same
template as my last skateboard experiment
and kept the gold border around the centre
image.
5. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• I will most likely use an image of a music artist rather than just a plain design as it make it more exclusive
and I think it will be more popular because music is highly popular in the skate culture. I also think that I
will use the border again as it makes the centre image stand out from the background colour.
6. Process
Firstly I decided on the theme of the
bear but spelt ‘bare’ as it is a slang word
for ’lots of’. I then went on google
images to find a bear to relate to the
pun. I then used a curved letter effect
to go around the gold border which I
also got off google images. I think the
red stands out on the gold as it is a royal
colour. I finally added a rose at the
bottom to add to the royalty theme of
it.
7. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• In my final product I hope to keep to the royal theme of gold colours and I also like the way
that red and green goes with the gold border which I hope to get the same effect on my final
design ideas. However I think that I will be more creative with my themed designs of the logo
and products I create for my final ideas.
