My target audience for my media product
Originally from the questionnaire I conducted at the start of my project, I concluded my
target audience will be around 14-25 year olds. From this I designed my magazine. However
when designing my magazine I decided to include some minor curse words, this makes the
magazine not suitable for 14 yr olds and 15 yr olds. I decided to do this as I realised a lot of
indie/rock bands are older and I wanted my magazine to be more mature something the
younger ages perhaps would not enjoy. I also decided that curse words make the magazine
friendlier and conversation based. I only used them where necessary to not be too
offensive. Also I included in my magazine a lot about live music and for most rock/indie
concerts you have be over 16 to actually attend so it wasn’t suitable to include 14 and 15 yr
olds in my magazine, so during this process I thought making my target audience a bit older
would be more effective and would help me to create a more successful magazine.
I also took inspiration from Q magazine and NME magazine as you may have previously
read, by copying the style and the type of language it made me inherit their target audience
which is mainly older teens, young adults and perhaps older adults as well. Because these
magazines had such a big impact on my magazine I had real inspiration to create a similar
product which is why I changed my target audience.
Furthermore after making my magazine I asked
several different people including rock and indie
fanswhat they thought of my magazine, and
asked them if they would buy it. 9 out of the 15
people I asked said they would buy it and
perhaps the reason why the other wouldn’t is
because they don’t like that genre of music. I
also asked people around the age of my new
target audience. From this I learnt that my
magazine would be successful with my new
target audience.
