The document discusses operating systems, their types, and functions. It defines an operating system as software that monitors, controls, and maintains a computer. It then describes four main types of operating systems - UNIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows. The functions of an operating system are then outlined as process management, resource management, file management, communication management, security management, and memory management.

OPERATING SYSTEM
Operating system is a part of system software
Operating system is a program which monitors,
controls and maintains the computer.
Operating system is the set of programs that controls
the overall functions of computer.
It provide a pleasant and effective interface between
the user and the hardware
Makes the computer more convenient to use
6. UNIX
UNIX (Operating trademarked as unix ,
sometimes also written as unix in small caps) is a
multitasking, multi-user computer operating
system originally developed in 1969 by a group of
AT&T employees at bell labs
It was first developed bn assembly language but
by 1973 had been almost entirely recoded in c ,
greatly facilitating its further development and
porting to other hardware.
7. LINUX
IT IS AN OPEN SOURCE OPERATING
SYSTEM, WHICH IS KIND OF AN ADAPTED
CLONE OF A UNIX OPERATING PROGRAM
LINUX IS THE KERNAL, THE PROGRAM IN THE
SYSTEM THAT ALLOCATES THE MACHINE’S
RESOURCES TO THE OTHER PROGRAMS
THAT YOU RUN.
THE KERNEL IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF AN
OPERATING SYSTEM.,BUT USELES BY
ITSELF, IT CAN ONLY FUNCTION IN THE
CONTEXT OF A COMPLETE OPERATING
SYSTEM.
8. LINUX IS NORMALLY USED IN COMBINATION
WITH THE GNU OPERTING SYSTEM, WHOLE
SYSTEM IS BASICALLY GNU WITH LINUX
ADDED, OR GNU/LINUX. ALL THE SO-CALLED
“LINUX” DISTRIBUTED ARE REALLY
DISTRIBUTIONS OF GNU/ LINUX.
EXAMPLE:-RED HAT, UBUNDU, FEDORA, ETC
9. SOLARIS
IT IS UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM ORIGINALLY
DEVELOPED BY SUN MICROSYSTEM.
ORACLE SOLARIS, AS IT NOW KNOW, HAS
BEEN OWNED BY ORACLE CORPORATION
ORACLE’S ACQUISITION OF SUN IN JAN 2010
IT IS KNOWS FOR ITS
SCALEBILITY,ESPECIALLY ON SPARC
SYSTEM, AND FOR ORIGINATING MANY
INNOVATIVE FEATURES SUCH AS DTRACE,
ZFS AND TIME SLIDER.SOLARIS SUPPORTS
SPARC-BASAD AND X86- BASED
WORKSTATIONS AND SERVERS FROM SUN
AND OTHER VENDORS, WITH EFFORTS
UNDERWAY TO PORT TO ADDITIONAL
PLATFORMS.
10. WINDOWS
MICROSOFT WINDOWS IS A SERIES OF
GRAPHICAL INTERFACE OPERATING SYSTEM
DEVELOPED , MARKETED, AND SOLD BY
MICROSOFT.
MICROSOFT INTRODUCED AN OPERATING
ENVIRONMENT NAMED WINDOWS ON NOV
20, 1985 AS A GRAPHICAL OPERATING
SYSTEM SHELL FOR MS-DOS IN RESPONSE
TO THE GROWING TNTEREST IN GRAPHICAL
USER INTERFACES(GUI). MICROSOFT
WINDOWS CAME TO DOMINATE THE
WORLD’S PERSONAL COMPUTER MARKET
WITH OVER 90% MARKET SHARE,
OVERTAKING MAC OS, WHICH HAD BEEN
INTRODUCED IN 1984.

FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING
SYSTEM
Process Management.
Resource Management.
File Management.
Communication Management.
Security Management.
Memory Management.
12. 1.Process management
By process management OS
manages many kinds of activities :-
All process from start to shut down
Creation and deletion of user and system
processes.
13. 2. Memory Management
The major activities of an
operating regard to memory-
management are:-
Decide which process are loaded into memory
when memory space becomes available.
Allocate and deallocate memory space as needed.
14. 3.File Management
The file management system
allows the user to perform such
tasks:-
Creating files and directories
Renaming files
Coping and moving files
Deleting files
15. 4.Security Management
By security management OS
manages many tasks such as:-
Alert messages
Dialogue boxes
Firewall
Passwords
16. 5.Command Interpreter
A command interpreter is an
interface between system and
the user. There are two types of
user interface:-
Command line
Graphical user interface
17. Contd……
With a command line user interface the user
interact with the OS by typing command to
perform specific tasks
With a graphical user interface the user
interacts with the OS by using a mouse to access
windows icons and menus
