ORCID provides individual researchers and scholars with a persistent unique identifier. Initial adoption has been rapid but the full benefit will be realized only if ORCID iDs are used by all stakeholder communities. ORCID iDs enable reuse of items in new contexts by making connections between items from the same author in different places. Through its author-focused approach ORCID will contribute to bridging the current divide between management of publications and research data, which are often carried out in independent ways through different, frequently disconnected kinds of repositories. We discuss procedures and strategies for ORCID iD implementation in two different contexts: Open Access repositories, and institutional research information management systems.
An generic overview of ORCID geared toward researchers. Incorporate these slides into your existing presentations or use as-is to encourage scholars and researchers to claim their own ORCID iDs.

VIVO and persistent identifiers: Integrating ORCID_08152013Rebecca Bryant, PhD
Title: VIVO and persistent identifiers: Integrating ORCID
Presented at the VIVO 2013 conference in St. Louis, MO, 08/15/13

Abstract:
Since the launch of the ORCID Registry in October 2012, thousands of researchers have claimed their ORCID iD. Organizations have been embedding ORCID identifiers in manuscript submission systems, in funding applications, and adding them to university profile systems. Even before launch, the VIVO ontology had incorporated an ORCID field. In this panel, we will provide an overview of the ORCID registry and adoption, and demonstrate how the American Psychological Association (APA) has integrated ORCID identifiers into its VIVO system and developed an application to populate ORCID records with demographic and publication attributes from APA VIVO RDF files. The ORCID data are packaged as a JSON object stored as a URI in the VIVO record. This serves as a cross-check for ORCID assertions from the publisher of works claimed and allows APA to use VIVO to extend valid provenance assertions for publications in a Linked Open Data Trust Framework. We will discuss the application of this use case for other VIVO implementations and other researcher profiling systems, focusing on integrations at universities.
ORCID for funders webinar - Josh Brown 8 March 2017ARDC
Funders play a critical role, along with universities and publishers, in building and supporting the infrastructure to support open research. Major funders, such as the European Commission, agree that persistent identifiers for people and works are necessary components of this infrastructure. ORCID provides researchers the tools to link their ORCID iD to their funding awards and a growing number of funders are integrating ORCID identifiers into grants application and post-award reporting workflows or are planning to do so. Using ORCID functionality helps to streamline reporting processes during grant application, and, after award, to enable outcomes reporting. This webinar is designed to connect funders who are integrating ORCID identifiers or are looking to do so.

ORCID: Connecting Research and ResearchersORCID, Inc
Webinar presentation by Laurel Haak to Stellenbosch University on ORCID, its current adoption by researchers and integrations by research community members.
Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) are an increasingly important tool and technology that enable new services for research. They are attached to outputs, grant funding, people and more. They provide a way to connect data, improve accuracy, and help the flow of information. Researchers can benefit from time savings, and more accurate attribution (think better citation data…) and institutions can gain efficiency savings and a better understanding of their research portfolio.
This webinar will provide an overview of the current PID landscape and will offer guidance on how PIDs for people (ORCID iDs) can be integrated in your systems, helping your researchers to take advantage of new and emerging services.

an identifier is not only persistent but
actionable: you can plug it into a web browser

ORCID: Building a global research infrastructure of persistent identifiers & community support
Nobuko Miyairi
ORCID Regional Director, Asia-Pacific
As research products and scholarly communication shift to digital formats, persistent identifiers (PIDs) are vital to discover, connect, and ensure accessibility. The need for PIDs is accelerated with the recent trends of open research, where transparency is important both in technicality and governance.
ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) is an international initiative and provides PID for researchers that can be used throughout their life-long career. Unlike other researcher identifiers that were available previously, ORCID is non-proprietary and driven by the research community. ORCID provides a free platform for individuals to create linkages between their iD and publications, awards, professional activities etc., ensuring that their work is correctly attributed. More than 600 organizations are participating as ORCID members, three quarters of which are universities and research institutions, helping their affiliated researchers manage their digital identities effectively. The use of ORCID ensures unambiguous, reliable linkages between individuals, their affiliations, research products and awards.
This session will overview the rise of PIDs in scholarly communication and their characteristics. Taking ORCID as an example, it illustrates common principles of PIDs that enable transparency and interoperability in building a global research infrastructure. It also explains how community-driven approach is increasingly important for sustainable PIDs.
It is the researchers that benefit greatly from ORCID iDs. They can use them throughout their career, and can already use them to distinguish themselves in publications and grants. And many are starting to see the benefits of using ORCID records in outcome tracking. For example, researchers in Portugal who receive federal funding provide their ORCID iD, and benefit from coordinated outcomes reporting by using the ORCID registry as a hub.
