ORCID: Building a global research infrastructure of persistent identifiers & community support

As research products and scholarly communication shift to digital formats, persistent identifiers (PIDs) are vital to discover, connect, and ensure accessibility. The need for PIDs is accelerated with the recent trends of open research, where transparency is important both in technicality and governance.
ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) is an international initiative and provides PID for researchers that can be used throughout their life-long career. Unlike other researcher identifiers that were available previously, ORCID is non-proprietary and driven by the research community. ORCID provides a free platform for individuals to create linkages between their iD and publications, awards, professional activities etc., ensuring that their work is correctly attributed. More than 600 organizations are participating as ORCID members, three quarters of which are universities and research institutions, helping their affiliated researchers manage their digital identities effectively. The use of ORCID ensures unambiguous, reliable linkages between individuals, their affiliations, research products and awards.
This session will overview the rise of PIDs in scholarly communication and their characteristics. Taking ORCID as an example, it illustrates common principles of PIDs that enable transparency and interoperability in building a global research infrastructure. It also explains how community-driven approach is increasingly important for sustainable PIDs.
It is the researchers that benefit greatly from ORCID iDs. They can use them throughout their career, and can already use them to distinguish themselves in publications and grants. And many are starting to see the benefits of using ORCID records in outcome tracking. For example, researchers in Portugal who receive federal funding provide their ORCID iD, and benefit from coordinated outcomes reporting by using the ORCID registry as a hub.
