The research community has
lacked the ability to link
researchers and scholars with their
professional activities.
What is the problem?
• Discoverability within and across databases
• Author, grantee, and faculty record management
• Output tracking
• Research reporting and impact assessment
4
Algorithms not enough
• Different versions (full
name vs. initials)
• Shared names
• Transliteration
• ALT characters
• Name changes
• Multiple family names

What is ORCID?
ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier
that distinguishes researchers from each other
Member-built integrations in key research
workflows such as manuscript and grant
submission support automated linkages
between researchers and their professional
activities and affiliations, ensuring that works
are appropriately attributed and discoverable
ORCID serves as a hub enabling machine-
readable connections between identifiers for
organizations, works, and person IDs
ORCID provides plumbing for
research information

10
ORCID is Open
• Non-proprietary and platform-neutral
• Registry use is free for individuals
• Independent non-profit membership
organization
• Open data, software, APIs, and
documentation
11
ORCID is Opt-in
• ORCID is an opt-in system
• You own and control your record
• ORCID record is portable and travels with
you throughout your career

Closing remarks
orcid.org 40
The ability to uniquely identify
contributors is a deceptively simple
concept which, if realised, could
enable forms of real-time
understanding of scientific research
that up to now have been extremely
costly (if not impossible).

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Name ambiguity is a fundamental issue we need to address and solve. Ambiguity may be the result of a common name, by a person with several language variants of their name, or by variations in how name information is collected. But, even after addressing name ambiguity, to support discoverability, we need to connect information across databases, disciplines, organizations, and nations. A persistent name identifier addresses both challenges.
  • #7 Silos Examples – researcher admin – refer to Gwenda about stakeholders in silos Lack of transparency Link from an idea to project
  • #8 ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes researchers from each other Member-built integrations in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission support automated linkages between researchers and their professional activities and affiliations, ensuring that works are appropriately attributed and discoverable ORCID serves as a hub enabling machine-readable connections between identifiers for organizations, works, and person IDs
  • #10 Information can feed from your ORCID profile into various systems, such as: Grants submission Institutional repository Publisher systems Research Management systems And other profiles and iDs
  • #13 ORCID was formed to address the problem of name ambiguity in scholarly communications.
  • #18 Breaking down the silo
  • #21 ORCID Members Page: http://orcid.org/about/community/members ORCID Integrations: http://orcid.org/organizations/integrators ORCID Member Support Center: http://members.orcid.org/
  • #31 It is the researchers that benefit greatly from ORCID iDs. They can use them throughout their career, and can already use them to distinguish themselves in publications and grants. And many are starting to see the benefits of using ORCID records in outcome tracking. For example, researchers in Portugal who receive federal funding provide their ORCID iD, and benefit from coordinated outcomes reporting by using the ORCID registry as a hub.
  • #36 Notes for presenter [go through slide]: Register for an ORCID iD International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI): ISNI has reserved a block of numbers for use by ORCID, to avoid assignment overlaps. All you need to set up your ORCID iD is your name and an email address.
