THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
WHAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC
METHOD?
The Scientific Method is a general
pattern followed by scientists
when conducting an experiment.
Is there only one version of the
scientific method?
No…there are many variations of it,
but all seek to identify a problem
and provide an organized method
for conducting and analyzing an
experiment!
THE STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC
METHOD
Observe
Question
Hypothesis
Experiment
Results/Conclusion
OBSERVE
You observe a topic that can
generate questions for further
research.
QUESTION
You ask a question about
what is being observed.
Identify the problem or
question.
HYPOTHESIS
Based on your observations, you
make an educated guess on what
you think the outcome of the
experiment, or the answer to your
question will be.
Do you ever change
your hypothesis after
realizing it didn’t turn
out the way you thought
it would?
NO!!
EXPERIMENT
You will develop and follow a
procedure to test your hypothesis.
The outcome must be measurable.
RESULTS/CONCLUSION
You will record the results of your
experiment, and repeat the experiment
if needed. You will state if your
hypothesis was accepted or not and
explain your results.
• All factors are the same for the
control and experimental groups
EXCEPT for one. The ONE factor
that differs is called the VARIABLE.
• Any differences observed are
most likely caused by the
VARIABLE.

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP-
WHAT ARE THE VARIABLES
IN AN EXPERIMENT?
Independent Variable- the variable that is
intentionally changed in an experiment to
observe its effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable- What is observed during
the experiment; It changes as a result.
Controlled Experiment- Changing one factor
and observing its effect on another while
keeping all other factors constant.

2017 scientific method lesson for blog

  • 1. MINDSTRETCHER 8/7/17 How many steps are there to the Scientific Method? Name as many as you can. 1) Observe 2) Question 3) Hypothesis 4) Experiment 5) Results/Conclusion
  • 2. DIRECTIONS 8/7/17 Read the “Scientific Method Science Safety Rules” on your handout you just received Underline & number the broken safety rules (using pencil) How many did you find? Sit quietly & be ready to share!
  • 4. WHAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD? The Scientific Method is a general pattern followed by scientists when conducting an experiment. Is there only one version of the scientific method? No…there are many variations of it, but all seek to identify a problem and provide an organized method for conducting and analyzing an experiment!
  • 5. THE STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD Observe Question Hypothesis Experiment Results/Conclusion
  • 6. OBSERVE You observe a topic that can generate questions for further research.
  • 7. QUESTION You ask a question about what is being observed. Identify the problem or question.
  • 8. HYPOTHESIS Based on your observations, you make an educated guess on what you think the outcome of the experiment, or the answer to your question will be. Do you ever change your hypothesis after realizing it didn’t turn out the way you thought it would? NO!!
  • 9. EXPERIMENT You will develop and follow a procedure to test your hypothesis. The outcome must be measurable.
  • 10. RESULTS/CONCLUSION You will record the results of your experiment, and repeat the experiment if needed. You will state if your hypothesis was accepted or not and explain your results.
  • 11. • All factors are the same for the control and experimental groups EXCEPT for one. The ONE factor that differs is called the VARIABLE. • Any differences observed are most likely caused by the VARIABLE. CONTROL GROUP & EXPERIMENTAL GROUP-
  • 12. WHAT ARE THE VARIABLES IN AN EXPERIMENT? Independent Variable- the variable that is intentionally changed in an experiment to observe its effect on the dependent variable. Dependent Variable- What is observed during the experiment; It changes as a result. Controlled Experiment- Changing one factor and observing its effect on another while keeping all other factors constant.
  • 13. SCIENTIFIC METHOD (ON YOUR ORGANIZER) Fill in the missing terms as I read the paragraph aloud to the class… Listen carefully… do NOT interrupt!
