Editor's Notes

  1. Magnet schools are far more integrated than the town as a whole , which shows starkly racialized housing patterns. (Lightest areas = 90% or more white; darkest areas: 75% or more African Americans.
  2. At some schools, white enrollment has sharply increased over the past 10 years, while AA enrollment has declined (significantly beyond the average 6% decline in AA population over the same period).
  3. At other schools, the trend is reversed: these schools are losing white enrollment as students of color predominate.
  4. Or in some cases, overtake white enrollment.
  5. Other schools more closely approximate the overall enrollment of students in the district.
  6. The distribution of FRL students (19% overall) in the district is also not equal. At some schools (Rand & Mount Hebron, Glenfield), the FRL enrollment is twice that at other schools (e.g., Renaissance and Watchung). This appears to be a factor in fundraising disparities between the schools.
