1. Various observational tools are used to establish the origin of aerosol events, including direct photographic evidence, satellite images, aerosol composition analysis, and trajectory modeling. 2. Analysis of data from 1992-2003 indicates that fine dust events over the US are mainly from intercontinental transport, with Saharan dust dominant in summer and Gobi dust in spring. 3. Apportionment of local and Saharan dust contributions on an annual and monthly basis found that Saharan dust exceeds local sources by a factor of 2-4 times in July across the southeastern US.
