This document discusses continental-scale transport of air pollutants across North America. Fine particulate matter can remain in the atmosphere for weeks and be transported over large regions. Major sources of particulate matter include windblown dust, volcanic emissions, industrial aerosols, and smoke from fires. Satellite data shows episodes of transport from Asia, Africa, and Central America impacting air quality over North America. International cooperation is needed to monitor and address transboundary pollution issues.
