The decline of the Roman Empire 
• The Roman Empire had a big economic, social and military crisis since the third century 
• As a result, Germanic tribes from the north started to attack the Empire 
• In 395 the Emperor Theodosius divided the Empire in two parts to defend better the Roman territories: 
• The Western Roman Empire (Spain, France, England, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia…) 
• The Eastern Roman Empire (Greece, the Balkans, Turkey, Egypt, Palestina…)
Nevertheless, the Germanic 
attacks were bigger and the 
last emperor – Romulus 
Augustulus – was deposed in 
476 
The Western part of the 
Empire was divided in some 
kingdoms like the Frankish 
Kingdom, the Ostrogothic 
Kingdom or the Kingdom of 
the Visigoths. 
Europe in 500 AD
During the sixth century the 
Germanic kingdoms, the 
Byzantine Empire and tribes 
fight to set their kingdoms. 
Europe in 600 AD 
By the time of the sixth century, Western Europe had a big crisis because the 
Germanic kingdoms didn’t have the organization of the Roman Empire 
For that reason some Germanic Kingdoms assumed features from the Romans 
like the language, the law or the religion which was the Christianity.
What did Britain look like in the sixth century? 
Tribes from the north of Germany and 
Danemark invaded the island and they fixed 
kingdoms in the Eastern part of Britain. 
They were the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. 
In the Western part of England, in Wales, in 
Scotland and Ireland, the Celts remained. 
(The Celts had been living in the Islands before 
the Roman time).
It was the time of King Arthur
