INTRODUCTION
 Tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts
the energy of the tides into electricity or other useful
forms of power. The tide is created by the
gravitational effect of the sun and the moon on the
earth causing cyclical movement of the seas.
 Since tides are more predictable than wind energy
and solar power. Thus they are leading renewable
source of energy for future electricity generation.

Tidal Range Technology
 tidal range technologies use
a barrage – a dam or other
barrier – to harvest power
from the difference between
high and low tide. The power
is generated through tidal
turbines (most of them come
from hydropower design,
such as bulb turbines)
located in the barrage.
Tidal Stream Technology
 A tidal stream
generator is a
machine that
converts energy from
moving mass of
water.
 It is much more like
under water wind
turbines.
The largest and newest tidal barrage in the world is the
Sihwa dam in north-eastern South Korea, which was built in
2011 and became operational in 2012. The Sihwa dam, with
a capacity of 254 MW

Advantages
 It is an inexhaustible source of energy.
 It does not produce green house gases.
 Efficiency of tidal power is far greater than coal,
solar, and wind energy.
 Maintenance cost is very low.
 Life of tidal energy power plant is very long.
Disadvantage
 Cost of construction of tidal power plant is very high.
 There are very few ideal location for construction of
plant.
 Influence aquatic life adversely.
 Since tidal energy plant is located near costal area
so it is very difficult to supply energy at a very long
distance. Transmission is difficult.
Conclusion
 Tidal energy is a kind of renewable energy with large
potential, it has many advantages over solar and
wind energy.
 The energy density if tides is also higher than solar
and wind energy.
 With the development of innovative tidal turbine
system and coastal infrastructure, the popularization
of tidal energy world wide can be expected.
