SELECTION AND
REJECTION
Which images I will and will not be using
IMAGE 1 - Rejected
I have rejected this image for several
reasons: Firstly the artists head is turned
away too far, meaning we cannot see lots of
her face, which isn’t aided by her hair which
has fallen over the right side of her face.
Secondly, this is a long-mid shot which I
intended to use for my contents page, so I
feel it is too far away from the artist to be
appropriate for its purpose.
Finally, the very bright colours of her coat
and trousers contrast the browns of the
setting too much, meaning the image has
little cohesion and so I don’t think it works
very well.
IMAGE 2 - Rejected
There are several issues with this
image which have caused me to
discard it. For instance, the artist is
moving which blurs the image and
therefore making it suitable for
use. Additionally the living room
setting –shown by the obtrusive
TV -isn’t appropriate for the indie-
pop genre of my magazine. It is
evident that the photo hasn’t been
taken in a location specially
created or chosen and looks
unprofessional.
Finally the body language and
facial expression of the artist
suggest that she isn’t taking the
photo shoot seriously. Whilst this
may be conducive to my
demographics' want for personal
interviews and content, however
doesn’t reflect professionalism in
my magazine.
IMAGE 3 - Rejected
I have rejected this photo firstly due to the poor
lighting which has made the image dominantly
grey and uninteresting. Additionally in a
conventional studio image you wouldn’t see the
shadows of the artist, whilst in this image there
are two clearly defined shadows.
Also, the artist’s body language is very closed.
This is ineffective at attracting my target audience
as they want an artist who will give a personal,
open interview, which this image doesn’t suggest.
This is also suggested by the hood covering part
of her face, as well as suggesting the artist is
wearing ill-fitting clothing and looks
unprofessional.
Finally I have discarded it because I intend to
use another image from my studio photo shoot
and I want to show a variation of locations,
especially as studios are very plain and add little
to the mise-en-scene.
IMAGE 4 - SELECTED
I have selected this image
because it makes good use of the
natural lighting to illuminate the
artists face. This makes the light
colours of her face contrast the red
of her lips and jumper.
Also the red of her lips matches
the red of her jumper, both of which
compliment the red-brown mantle-
piece behind her, creating whole
image cohesion. Additionally, even
though the artist isn’t looking at the
camera it looks as though we’re
looking at her in a reflective
moment and thus feels more
spontaneous and personal, which is
what my demographic want.
IMAGE 5 - SELECTED
I have chosen this image firstly because
the studio setting makes it look professional
and could be used on the cover of my
magazine, just like it would be on a real one.
Also, although the lighting of the
background is darker than is conventional I
am confident I can brighten it – as they
would – and replicate their style. Moreover,
despite this being a mid-long shot, I can
crop it to become a mid-shot and thus use
the same style shot that a real magazine
would have.
Finally, like the last photograph the artist,
although looking away has a very natural
facial expression and body language,
suggesting to the reader she will be honest
and open in her interview.
IMAGE 6 - SELECTED
I have chosen this image because
the artist is looking at the camera
which will therefore interest the
audience as they feel as though the
artist is looking at them.
This image also makes use of the
bright natural lighting to which works
with the costume to create a bolder
image, whilst the strong and
contrasting colours still make her stand
out and capture the audience’s
attention. The picture is set in the
woods, which is conventional of the
indie genre and therefore is
appropriate for my magazine, as are
the colours used, because whilst the
diffused browns will appear to the
milder indie audience, the bright purple
will attract a pop audience and thus the
image appeals to both audiences my
magazine aims to appeal to.
