2. Existing Product
Images- The images within this double page spread, I
found that all three shot of the right hand side of the
double page spread are taken within a studio, unlike
the polaroid image on the left (of the author). This
might have been done to network the beauty
artist/author. I noted that all images are medium close
ups to show the makeup in more detail. The images on
the right are all head on shots whereas the image on
the left is above the author, this might have been done
so that the audience could differentiate between the
author and the models. The effects on the images are
different, some use naturalistic filters or black and
white images and sepia.
The lighting among the images of the cosmetics and
models are extremely artificial to give a glossy effect to
appeal to the audience. I also noticed that all the
images have annotation around them, talking about
how to use and apply the products. The mise-en-scene
of the double page spread shows a colour scheme that
matches the colours of the products, to show
contingency throughout the double page spread so
that’s it is more appealing to the eye.
Text Within this double page spread I liked the use of
language, examples of specific vocabulary that is used
are “cleanser”, “Exfoliate” and “tone”. These words
are specific to makeup and the beauty genre. The
colours within this DPS are very stereotypically girly,
e.g. baby pinks, greys, and beige. This would have been
done to appeal to the audience, which is most likely to
be girls. The article also uses check lists so that the
audience does not get lost or bored throughout the
text. The use of numbers help this, and is also
applicable for the audience to use at home.
Fonts- The fonts within this double page spread are genre specific, for example magazines
such as vogue, cosmopolitan use fonts similar to ‘Didot’. They’re classic and something the
audience can automatically make links to the type of magazine it will be alongside the images
with it. I noted that the title font and the article fonts are different. This might have been
done so that the audience can read the article without struggle, as the font used in the titles
might be difficult to read in big paragraphs. I also noticed that the font changes in the titles in
different places, .i.e. the “Tried and tested” section shows a different font. This might have
been done to change the piece up a little.
Audience appeal- Overall I feel that the double page spread is something that my target
audience might find attractive to look at and be appealed too.
3. Existing Product
Image- Within this front cover of “Make-up Artist” You see two models, Both
from different ethnic backgrounds, This might have been done to show case that
the makeup can suit different skin tones, and that the magazine is ‘politically
correct’. This is important and something I will apply to my own production as it
expands the target audience and hypothetically more sales. I also noticed that the
image taken was not in a studio but what looked like a green/garden looking
scenery, this might have been done to match the makeup within the picture, .i.e.
the makeup represents a mystical, fairy-tale imagery, therefore the Mise-En-
Scene has to match the overall feel of the images.
Angle and Effect The angles of the photo shows a head on shot to create direct
mode of address with the audience, this is essential in a front cover of a magazine
because it causes the audience to engage with magazine and intrigues them. The
effect of the front cover images is minimal, I thought that perhaps that saturation
of the images were dulled to accentuate the makeup features. I would have
presumed that the models would have been airbrushed during the Photoshop
editing process.
Lighting and Colour – On one half the image the blonde model is made to look
other worldly, and composed to look black and white, and almost dull lighting,
this might have been done to emphasise the pops of colour on the cheekbones
and eyes etc.
Whereas the brown haired model is overly saturated, brighter, and seem to be
more alive, this is ironic as the images in my opinion represent life and death with
the use of the colour black and gold.
Props- The props used within the images such as the veil on both models add
dimensions to the picture, so that it adds things for the audience to enjoy and to
potentially make links with the content of the magazine.
Text and font- Obviously ‘Makeup artist’ stands out from all other text on the page, as it represents the purpose of the magazine and is essentially
telling the audience the content of the magazine. In the tag line above the main title states “114 pages of inspiration-our most ever” (in bold) again
this just entices the audience to read on. I liked how the magazine used little text throughout out the front cover to emphasise the purpose of the
magazine (the makeup on the models). The font used is similar to something you might seen in Vogue or Cosmopolitan, (Didot) this will have been
done to keep to the codes and conventions of a fashion magazine.
4. Existing Product I decided to look at a beauty/makeup
reviewer and makeup brand pioneer Jeffree
Star. Because I found it to be ideal for what I
wanted to include in my own production. As
I want to include makeup tips, makeup
reviews and expertise. I also wanted to see
his website, as I felt this is something I will
create alongside my own magazine.
Fonts and colour scheme- Within this search bar I liked the use of bright pink as I felt it complimented his brand and his personality. It would also
appeal to his target audience as stereotypically girls will be his main consumers. I also liked the colour white used with in his font to stand out against
the bright colour so that audience could easier direct themselves around the website. In the corner of his search bar you see his “Jeffree Star
Cosmetics” with his iconic star symbol. This will have been done to add his own personal stamp to distinguish himself from other makeup producers.
Below the pink bar, you see a website directory, I also appreciated how this had been put together as his costumers can easy work around his
website and therefore user friendly this also is something I want to apply to my own website if I create one.
Images- The image on the front of the website shows a male model and Jeffree Star himself,
this is important as he is endorsing his products himself by putting on his own lipstick. I could see
that the actual image itself had been taken in a studio set, he is sat on a dentist chair probably for
no particular reason but just to be abstract within his images, to add something a little different to
other existing brands. The angle used is medium long shot. This is was done to showcase the
setting, the makeup and of course the models.
The of overall colour scheme of the imagery is baby pink and red. These ironically don’t match
each other. The use of baby pink has connotations to ‘girlyness’. This is due to the fact that this
product will be aimed at females, so a more ‘girly’ colour has been used in the image in order to
appeal to the target audience. The contrasting red colour of the jump suit, worn by Jeffery Star,
stands out from the rest of the image. This is due to the fact that he is using the product in the
image so will want to draw attention to it. This will cause the product to be more noticeable and
will ultimately achieve the aim of advertising the lipstick.
5. Existing ProductImages- On the left hand side of this ‘Allure’ double page spread,
I had a range of image type, for example many on the products
and makeup are obviously take in a studio similar to what Id
want to put in my own production. The location of the images
were taken in a studio, this will have been done to make the
products look more glossy/expensive, whereas the images of the
models/author are taken in different locations, such as a studio,
runway, and selfies that are made to look like a polaroid effect.
The angle of these image vary, the product images are taken
from a birds view angle, perhaps just to showcase the products
to the audience. The other images of the models are taken from
a medium close-up/medium shot. With different image effects,
.i.e. the polaroid images are in black and white, to potentially
distinguish the authors and the models.
The lighting of the images are vey artificial and enhanced. This
might have been done to give a Photoshoped imagery to suit the
codes and conventions of a beauty/makeup magazine. Within
the double page spread you don’t see many props as such used
like you would in a fashion magazine, I would personally like to
add my own props to my production. As for costume there is a
lack of costume as the article is not based upon clothes but on
makeup. I will also apply this to my own production.
Colour scheme/Fonts/Text.
The colour scheme for this double page spread, change from the left side to the right side. I found this refreshing as most magazines try to keep contingency through the
DPS. However I liked the left hand side focusing on ‘Au natural’ makeup, so in tern they used naturalistic colour within the background and throughout that side of the
page (beige, pink, white, black). Compared to the right hand side, you notice a more bolder and animalistic Mise En Scene. With the zebra print for the back ground, this is
something I want to apply to my own work as I feel the audience will appreciate the cool looking effect for the DPS.
Within this double page spread I loved the simplicity of the of the fonts through out. This particular font reminded me of ‘apple symbols’ I reflected that Allure magazine
might have used this font so that the audience didn't’t get lost in the mass of text of focus on the content of the article and so that the audiences attention is spread
across the images and text.
Audience appeal
In my opinion I found that the audience appeal for this double page spread was extremely professional looking and that if the audience were looking at this for makeup
advice they would take it seriously. I also feel that the images and backdrops are important for grabbing the audiences attention, as it adds something different to what
you might see in a normal double page spread.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– The common features I noted was that all of the products used a bright
colour scheme to attract the audiences attention. All four existing
products had many images in the website, double page spreads and front
covers. The language among the products had varying words/text to
convey the codes and conventions of that particular products. I also liked
how each product used a range of different settings and environments to
take the images.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own production
work?
- I will want to include my own original images with the used of makeup art from
the ‘natural’ look to ‘full coverage’ just like I had seen in all the other existing
products. I also want to include a professional looking double page spread similar
to allure, I also want to have my own articles with language that suits the codes
and conventions of a specialist professional makeup magazine. I also want to
come up with my own colour scheme that conveys the tone and mood I want.
8. Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my
audience: This says that the
recipients for my
questionnaire are between
the ages of 16-18 and one
participant was 19. This is
shown in my survey
monkey questionnaire.
• How will your product
appeal to this audience:
This is an ideal age
category for my product
because it is within my own
age group, therefore I
know what it will take to
appeal to that particular
age category for example I
will add things from online
trends on social media, this
will appeal to 16-18 year
olds as this age group is
most likely to see these
trends.
9. Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
This shows that the participants from
my survey monkey questionnaire are
predominantly males.
• To be exact 70% males
• Also 40%
• How will your product appeal to this
audience:
• I found this to be a difficulty for my
product research as I found that
females are predominately more
interested in make up compared to
males
• Knowing this the following questions
have N/A or not interested as the
participants are 70% males.
• Therefore this makes my research
and data slightly skewed. And not as
accurate to the general population
rather than my own class that has
fair more males than females.
10. Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience: In
my opinion the results from this
question “what genre of magazine do
you usually buy? Had a huge range of
results.
• I.e. 40% fashion/makeup which I was
pleased to see as this is the genre I
most want to base my product on.
• Sport 10%
• Music 20%
• Interior design 5%
• And finally the biggest section was
Gaming at 60% this again might have
been due to the fact that it was
mainly males within my questionnaire
participants
• How will your product appeal to this
audience: This just helped me
establish what kind of genre of
magazine I will produce for my target
audience. Although sports had the
most percentage of pp votes I
decided to focus on fashion/beauty
because I have a more personal
interest.
11. Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
This shows that my audience from
this particular questionnaire I found
that most participants spent the
least time reading magazines.
• Which was the option 0-5 hours.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience:
• This means I could make my magazine
much shorter than I originally intended
as my audience prefer a short magazine.
• 100% of my receipts voted for 0-5 hours.
Which shows that my audience wants a
short magazine.
12. Audience research
• Observation: That my audience
was only interested in this
section the most;
• Images/Photography 75%
• Articles 40%
• Graphics 40%
• Headlines 15%
• Other 5%
• What this says about my
audience:
• This says that my audience main
interest in a print magazine is
the photography within the
double page spread and front
cover.
• How will your product appeal to
this audience: I will ensure I take
interesting and bright images to
attract my audience.
13. Audience research
• Observation: “How many
pages do you think a magazine
should be?”
• 5-10 pages 5.26%
• 11-16 pages 10.53%
• 17-22 pages 57.89%
• 23-28 pages 26.2%
• What this says about my
audience: This is contrasting to
my previous question because
it shows my audience wants a
lengthy magazine.
• It also shows some want a
longer magazine and a shorter
one,
• How will your product appeal
to this audience: I will aim to
make my magazine between
17-22 pages long to appeal to
my target audience. As my
research shows this is what my
audience wants.
14. Audience research
• Observation: “What types of
makeup are you interested in?”
• Not interested 60%
• Mac 15%
• Chanel 30%
• Rimmel/Drugstore 5%
• Smash box 5%
• Benefit 25%
• Cat Von Dee 10%
• What this says about my
audience:
• This says that my audience is
mainly not interested in makeup
at all. This could be due to
factors such as gender as mainly
males answered my
questionnaire. But for the
makeup that was selected
showed that Mac & Benefit were
mainly selected as a preferred
makeup brand.
• How will your product appeal to
this audience:
• I will aim to included articles on
makeup brands like Mac, Chanel
and Benefit or certainly images.
15. Audience research
• Observation: “Do you follow/watch
ant particular makeup artist? If so
who?
• I saw a range of answers for this
question and they varied from;
• “No” “Jeffrey star” “Lancôme”
• What this says about my audience:
The majority of the participants said
that they don’t watch any makeup
artists
• This could be due the percentage of
males to females.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience:
• I will aim to base my reviews and
tutorials similar to Jeffrey Star and
other famous makeup artists that my
participants have put in my survey
monkey questionnaire.
16. Audience research
• Observation: “What was the
last cosmetic product you
bought? (Doesn’t have to be
makeup) The answers
varied from “foundation
from Lancôme”
• “probably toothpaste”
• What this says about my
audience:
This shows that boys and girls
are both interested in cosmetic
products of some sort.
• How will your product
• appeal to this audience: I
will aim to include as many
cosmetic products to suite
as genders and target
audience.
17. Audience research
• Observation: “Would you
be interested in buying a
professional makeup
magazine?”
• From these results shows
that the majority of the
participants from my
questionnaire are not
interested in buying a
professional makeup
magazine
• What this says about my
audience:
• This says that the males
within my class and
participants were not
interested in buying in
what might be considered
to be a girly magazine
• How will your product
appeal to this audience: I
will aim to target
magazine at
predominantly girls.

20. Interview 1
• Observation: Within question the answer given says “The images there I like to see what there
talking about” This for me shows that my audience in particular like the use of images so they have
text image cohesion. The answer for question 2 shows “Mac but I don’t often buy expensive brands
am not that into make up” This again show that there is an interest in makeup but not necessarily in
expensive designer brand. The answer for question 3 says “The last product I purchased was a no7
foundation. I purchased he matte foundation and I really like it because I has a good coverage and
easily hides my blemishes” This shows that my audience has basic knowledge of makeup, it is
important I show an extended interest/knowledge in makeup and beauty so that my audience can
be educated. The answer for question 4 states “The price id do more ace up if it was affordable and
good quality” That my target audience is willing to buy a product if is of good quality and relative
price. For question 5 says “The last magazine I purchased was cosmopolitan because it had Jennifer
Lawrence on the cover and she is very pretty.” This show my target audience has a superficial
interest in beauty for the front cover of model. This is something I might apply in my own piece.
• What this says about my audience: All this says that my interviewee has a interest in beauty/fashion
magazine and has a basic knowledge in these kind of magazines. I find it important that I take note
of all the things I found out.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will include all these things to appeal to my
audience 1. original images/photography. 2. Include all types of brands 3. Step by step processes for
makeup and finally an attractive model as my interview showed that my target audience is
interested.
21. Interview 2
• 1. If you were to buy a Fashion magazine, what aspect of the magazine would entice you to
buy it (Photography, article etc.) And why?
• I really like the photography or the art work that would be presented on the front cover of
the magazine because if the photography is of someone I know I will be intrigued in what
their contribution of the magazine is.
• 2. What makeup product would you buy if you had to choose. (Mac, Chanel, Benefit other)
and for what reason?
• I would choose mac because they are a very popular brand and have good reviews about
their products
• 3. What was the last cosmetic product you last bought? (this could be a hygiene product) and
why?
• The last product I purchased was a no7 foundation. I purchased he matte foundation and I
really like it because I has a good coverage and easily hides my blemishes
• 4. What interests you or disinterests you in makeup and beauty and why?
• I'm interested in the new techniques people use to get a flawless finish with their makeup
because im not good at make up so it helps me. I dislike reviews on new products because
some beauty bloggers are too harsh on specific brands and products
• 5. What was the last fashion/beauty magazine you last bought? And why did you buy this?
• The last magazine I purchased was cosmopolitan because it had Jennifer Lawrence on the
cover and she is very pretty.
22. Interview 2
• Observation: Within my first question my interviewee answered “I really like the photography or the
art work that would be presented on the front cover of the magazine because if the photography is of
someone I know I will be intrigued in what their contribution of the magazine is.” For me this was very
helpful answer compared to previous answer as it gives an in detail answer about how and why images
appeal to a female audience. The second answer for question 2 was “I would choose mac because they are
a very popular brand and have good reviews about their products” this showed that this female liked
buying popular makeup brands as she felt it was a brand that she knew and that she could trust. Within
the third answer said “The last product I purchased was a no7 foundation. I purchased he matte
foundation and I really like it because I has a good coverage and easily hides my blemishes” Which again I
found interesting as the first interviewee said that same thing which show number seven is a very trusted
brand among my target age group. Within the fourth question my interviewee answered by saying “I'm
interested in the new techniques people use to get a flawless finish with their makeup because I'm not
good at make up so it helps me. I dislike reviews on new products because some beauty bloggers are too
harsh on specific brands and products” I particularly found this to be the most helpful answer as I wanted
to make an article on makeup reviews and tutorial, this taught me not to be to critical and to be fair on
new makeup brands.
• What this says about my audience: This says that my audience is well educated on makeup and
beauty and that I need to ensure my facts are correct so that I don’t misinform my audience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will try to include articles for advanced makeup
artists and just beginners so that everyone can learn something new, or improve their makeup
skills.
