5. Theme or focus of images
With these images we can see they are quite similar to each other, for example two
images are looking away from the camera and the other two are looking straight into
the camera. Also, with all of these images the complete focus of each of the pictures
is the model, nothing else is featured in the image. They are also very simplistic, there
isn’t much action in the images just the models to focus on.
These images are quite tranquil and quiet, there isn’t any action at all in the image so
this leaves us to completely focus on the model alone, Because there isn’t much
action we are left to look deeply into every part of the image, the way their hair falls
and the way they are placed. There isn’t much emotion clearly shown on image 1
and 2, however with image 4 we cannot see the models face or emotion, but we
can tell by the placement of his arms and the way he is sitting he’s in deep thought or
even stressed. I think these images are quite serious, because neither of the models
shows any sign of happiness, in images 2, 3 and 4 the models look like they are in
deep thought.
With image 1 we can see light and dark tones of green in the background behind the
model, and in image 2 we can see dark tones of green again featured in the
background. The lighter tones of green in image 1, could possibly represent the fact
image 1 is less serious than image 2. The models face is brighter and she’s even
wearing a white top. Where as, in image 2 the only green we can see is tones of dark
green, which I think shows the image is much more serious and darker than the first.
The model in image 2 is also wearing a dark black top, which could represent this
also. Image 2 is much darker in general than image 1, so I think this shows this image is
more serious and has deeper meaning than the first. In this image the models hair also
falls over the half of her face closest to the camera, which could represent she may
have something to hide, which again contributes to the idea the second image has
a much more darker and deeper meaning than the first.
In image 3 we can see the model has his head resting against his hand, with his other
hand slightly clenched resting on the table, sat slightly slouched. This could show he is
thinking about something or possibly worried about something because these are
usual signs of thought. The fact his head is resting on his hand could show his head is
heavy with thought. In image 4, we then see the same model completely slouched
with his head in both of his hands, either looking straight at the table or has his eyes
closed. The way the model is pulling his hair back with his hands show he’s in some
sort of distress, could be worrying or even upset. The fact he either has his eyes locked
straight onto the table or with his eyes closed shows he is definitely in deep thought.
You can see the tension on the back of his hands pulling his hair back that he is
stressed or worried about something.
In images 1 and 2, we can tell by the colours featured in the background she is
somewhere where there is grass or in a wooded area. Whereas with images 3 and 4,
he is sat in a clean white room with no colour, he is even wearing a white top in both
6. of these images.
I think this photographer uses the technique of having the model as the main and
only feature of the images because he wants us to think deeply about every aspect
of the images and think about what they are trying to portray. We have to look at
every possibly detail to try and get the message behind the image.
Composition
In images 1 and 2 the images are quite close to the models face, her head and face
takes up almost the entire image. Which I think shows he wants us to focus on just her
face. I think he decides to keep as much of the background out of the image as
possible for the same reason.
However in images 3 and 4, there is more of the model featured in both of the
images. His torso, arms, hands and the table are all featured in the images. I think this
is because his body language is what shows us the emotion of the model. There isn’t
much background involved in these images either, I think the photographer chooses
this for the same reason; he wants us to focus on just the model nothing else. Hence
why the background is just white, no colour or action going on. This makes our eyes
focus entirely on the model.
Techniques used
In images 1 and 2, there is definitely depth of field involved. The main focus, the
model, is in very clear focus where as the background is completely blurred out, to
the point where we can only see the main colours, no detail. Again I think the
photographer does this because he wants the model to be the only focus of the
image.
I think for images 1 and 2 a fairly quick shutter speed would have been used to
capture exactly where her hair falls perfectly. However with images 3 and 4 I think a
regular shutter speed could have been used because there isn’t any quick moving
action to capture quickly.
Strengths & Weaknesses
A strength of these images would be that I like the fact the model is the only focus
point, it makes the viewer look in deep detail at the image.
A weakness would be I think these images are quite forced; they don’t seem very
natural or genuine. However I understand why the photographer has done this for
these images.
