Let’s look at another thing similar to
wake turbulence: “Ground Effect.”
Anytime an aircraft is flying there is
high pressure below the wing and
lower pressure above and some of
that air goes around the wingtips
destroying lift on top.
But when an airplane is a wingspan
or less above the ground, the ground
interferes with that air’s ability to get
around the wingtip.
When you’re in ground effect, some
of the lift that normally would be
destroyed is no longer being
destroyed and the airplane flies a
little bit better.
It increases lift, reduces drag, and
lowers your stalling speed.
AIRPLANE
LEAVING
GROUND EFFECT
will experience an increase in
induced drag and require
more thrust.
Because when you leave
ground effect you no longer
have it’s help.
AIRPLANE LEAVING
GROUND EFFECT
If you keep the same AOA in
ground effect as out of ground
effect say on landing, lift will
increase when back in ground
effect and induced drag will
decrease when coming in for a
for landing.
To product the same lift when
out of ground effect as when in
ground effect you’d have to
increase the angle of attack.
When back in ground effect
you’d lower the AOA.
