This document discusses the history of ideas around natural selection and evolution. It describes how 19th century naturalists like Cuvier, Lamarck, and Lyell attempted to explain the changing life on Earth over time. Lamarck proposed that traits could be inherited from parents after environmental changes. Lyell proposed that gradual geologic processes shaped the Earth over millions of years. Darwin's observations on his voyage on the Beagle, including fossils like glyptodons, led him to develop the theory of evolution by natural selection, whereby individuals with traits better suited to the environment are more likely to survive and pass on those traits.
