North Eastern Region – an important Hub
AGRO-HORTICULTURAL
Prosperity
OPPORTUNITIES
UNLIMITED
NE Region
• North Eastern Region today stands poised as a major growth area, given
the tremendous availability of natural resources. With its proximity to south
east Asian markets, being home to diverse & exotic variety of fruits &
spices, this region could emerge as a major centre of food processing &
can command a high price both in domestic & international market.
• Region is blessed with Agro-horti bounties; fruits & vegetables are aplenty
& are naturally organic having huge export potential both in fresh &
processed form. It can able to carve a niche in the organic food market
once the production, certification & marketing is done in an
institutionalized manner with better post-harvest technology, supply chain
management, branding etc.
• Govt. of India is making efforts to promote startup companies & develop
entrepreneurship in the north east to make a favorable change in the
scenario. It’s initiative like Act East policy, Make in India, Skill
development, MSME access to finance through Mudra bank, creation of
Spice park, Food Park, Bamboo Park etc. offers opportunities for
development of agri-business.
• NE Region faces various challenges that result In high percentage of
production surplus getting wasted at various stages in the value
chain. Large losses from farm to plate are attributed to poor handling,
distribution, storage, & purchase / consumption behavior.
• Agri-entrepreneurs of north east are first generation entrepreneurs.
Access to micro finance, technology up-gradation, high-end skill
generation & creation of marketing linkages are four verticals through
which new opportunities can only drive their growth story.
• Commercial horticulture is focused primarily on Food Processing,
because of its high share in employment generation, increasing
farmers’ income, export growth & its major contribution to GDP.
• Losses at every stage of food chain can be reduced by using
appropriate processing & packaging. Major reasons for waste are
insufficient cold storages, absence of food processing facilities and
poor access to domestic as well as international markets.
• Production are in pockets & there are huge potential to establish
cross border value chain for mutual prospects through aggregation.
Make in North East initiative will promote exclusive north east expertise
in areas like tea processing, organic farming, FOOD PROCESSING,
exploitation of wind power through wind mills, ayush, wellness therapies etc.
India is ideally placed to be the “Food Bowl” for the world.
 India produces all types of fruits & vegetables
 2nd largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables in
the world (2013):

 Converting food into ice
without passing through the
liquid form of water by means
of vacuum plus heat applied
in the drying chamber.
 Smaller the crystals, the better
the quality of products once
thawed. Raw & cooked foods
will not suffer losses of liquids,
weight, consistency & taste &
it will be possible to use &
propose them in full safety as
fresh products.
MAP is a way of extending the shelf life of fresh food products.
Technology substitutes the atmospheric air inside a package
with a protective gas mix & the gas in the package helps ensure
that the product will stay fresh for as long as possible.
A carefully controlled MAP achieves & maintains an optimal
respiration rate to preserve the fresh colour, taste and nutrient
content of red meat, seafood, minimally processed fruits &
vegetables, pasta, prepared foods, cheese, baked goods, cured
meats & dried foods throughout an extended shelf life
 Packaging films are selected to match the characteristics
and needs of the food product.
 Film permeability, water vapour transmission rates and
sealing characteristics need to be measured and tested at
film selection and again at package converting & product
fill stages since the ability of a film to handle MAP
performance characteristics may vary within each stage.
 The gases used for (MAP) are carbon dioxide, oxygen and
nitrogen – all of which are naturally present in air

OVER LONG DISTANCES
Mostly micro & small enterprises in food
processing sector in the north east.
There is an immediate requirement for up-
gradation of the micro & smaller units.
Micro & small units need to modernise
production processes, increase scale of
operations & incorporate safety considerations
for both domestic & global markets
Medium scale units need to diversify its range of
products besides standardising them with
respect to quality & consistency.

13. NECS 2016 Opportunities in agro - food processing Mr.S.Bhattacharjee

  • 1.
  • 2. North Eastern Region – an important Hub
  • 4. • North Eastern Region today stands poised as a major growth area, given the tremendous availability of natural resources. With its proximity to south east Asian markets, being home to diverse & exotic variety of fruits & spices, this region could emerge as a major centre of food processing & can command a high price both in domestic & international market. • Region is blessed with Agro-horti bounties; fruits & vegetables are aplenty & are naturally organic having huge export potential both in fresh & processed form. It can able to carve a niche in the organic food market once the production, certification & marketing is done in an institutionalized manner with better post-harvest technology, supply chain management, branding etc. • Govt. of India is making efforts to promote startup companies & develop entrepreneurship in the north east to make a favorable change in the scenario. It’s initiative like Act East policy, Make in India, Skill development, MSME access to finance through Mudra bank, creation of Spice park, Food Park, Bamboo Park etc. offers opportunities for development of agri-business.
  • 5. • NE Region faces various challenges that result In high percentage of production surplus getting wasted at various stages in the value chain. Large losses from farm to plate are attributed to poor handling, distribution, storage, & purchase / consumption behavior. • Agri-entrepreneurs of north east are first generation entrepreneurs. Access to micro finance, technology up-gradation, high-end skill generation & creation of marketing linkages are four verticals through which new opportunities can only drive their growth story. • Commercial horticulture is focused primarily on Food Processing, because of its high share in employment generation, increasing farmers’ income, export growth & its major contribution to GDP. • Losses at every stage of food chain can be reduced by using appropriate processing & packaging. Major reasons for waste are insufficient cold storages, absence of food processing facilities and poor access to domestic as well as international markets. • Production are in pockets & there are huge potential to establish cross border value chain for mutual prospects through aggregation.
  • 6. Make in North East initiative will promote exclusive north east expertise in areas like tea processing, organic farming, FOOD PROCESSING, exploitation of wind power through wind mills, ayush, wellness therapies etc.
  • 7.
  • 8. India is ideally placed to be the “Food Bowl” for the world.
  • 9.  India produces all types of fruits & vegetables  2nd largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables in the world (2013): › Vegetables: 169.19 mn tons (14% of global production) › Fruits: 81.28 mn tons (12.6% of global production) › Av. PH Loss: 15% (Fruit), 20% (Veg) › Per capita availability (g): Fruit: 67(120), Veg: 145(280)

Raw & cooked foods will not suffer losses of liquids, weight, consistency & taste & it will be possible to use & propose them in full safety as fresh products.
  • 43. MAP is a way of extending the shelf life of fresh food products. Technology substitutes the atmospheric air inside a package with a protective gas mix & the gas in the package helps ensure that the product will stay fresh for as long as possible. A carefully controlled MAP achieves & maintains an optimal respiration rate to preserve the fresh colour, taste and nutrient content of red meat, seafood, minimally processed fruits & vegetables, pasta, prepared foods, cheese, baked goods, cured meats & dried foods throughout an extended shelf life
  • 44.  Packaging films are selected to match the characteristics and needs of the food product.  Film permeability, water vapour transmission rates and sealing characteristics need to be measured and tested at film selection and again at package converting & product fill stages since the ability of a film to handle MAP performance characteristics may vary within each stage.  The gases used for (MAP) are carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen – all of which are naturally present in air
