15. Greenfield Airport
Pakyong (Sikkim)
A new Greenfield airport is under construction at Pakyong (Gangtok) in Sikkim. Anticipated Revised Cost -
Rs. 605 crores.
The likely date of completion - December, 2017.
Funding – 90% Govt. grant and 10% by AAI.
Physical progress 86%.
Work got hindered due to intermittent bandhs, heavy rain, earthquake etc. Local residents had stopped
the work on compensation issue for the houses adjacent to the boundary stating cracks on the building.
Even though work restarted from Nov. 2014, it again got stopped by villagers on the demand of payment
of compensation. MoU signed with State Govt on 30.06.2015 and compensation amount has been
released by AAI. Work resumed from 1.10.2015.
Critical Issues
State Govt
i) Vacation/relocation of houses adjacent to AAI boundary.
ii) Providing land for AAI residential colony(approx 5 acres).
iii) Approach road from Ranipur to Pakyong to be widened.
iv) The MoU between Govt. of Sikkim & AAI/MoCA/NITI Ayog has been signed.
