This document provides information about retrofitting an existing 5-story building with a concrete masonry unit and wood floor structure. The proposed retrofit involves removing the 2nd floor and central load-bearing wall, replacing the 1st floor with structural steel and a concrete slab on metal decking, and installing three spread footings to support the multi-wythe masonry bearing wall. Details are given about the proposed structural steel components as well as installation of the spread footings, including proper placement of rebar, anchor bolts, and non-shrink grout. Common errors made in spread footing installation are also discussed.
