Short Story John Clarke
Oh I m with Clarke on this one . They both turn their head at once, looking toward the door, startled
by the unexpected interruption. Anya is looking at them, trying to keep an emotionless expression
painted on her face while a smirk desperately tries to crack her lips open. Clarke releases Lexa s waist
and takes a step back, running her fingers through her locks just to do something with her hand. Both
girls blinking in complete embarrassment and Lexa has stopped her stirring while she looks at her
sister, hoping she will just stop mocking her. The blonde feels her cheeks burning at the temperature of

Clarke, who is still laughing, she frowns, snapping her tongue. Do you like the nickname Clarke? Yes,
oh gosh She answers, covering her mouth with an hand, trying to placate her laugh. Oh... Anya scoffs
with a worried expression and Lexa glares at her a warning glare, knowing she is about to say
something else. Her sister totally ignores the brunette and she concludes her attack with a candid
voice. Don t tell me you ll use that in bed now, please . Clarke literally chokes on air and her laugh
turns in a cough, muffled in her hand, her eyes wide. Lexa snorts out of frustration, turning her head to
look at her suffocating girlfriend. When the blonde manages to breathe again, even if her eyes remain
fixated on the floor, Lexa looks back at Anya. Her expression is as pitiful as the one of a beaten dog

Persepolis amp; Not Without My Daughter
The Iranian revolution of 1979 refers to the overthrowing of the last king of Iran. It was an Islamic
revolution which attempted to replace Mohammed Reza Shah, with an Islamic republic under
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution. Strong opposition against the Shah showed
that the people wanted a religious ruler rather than someone they saw as an American puppet. Many
Iranian people would think that the Shah was a capitalist pig who ran a corrupt and repressive regime
but tried to embrace western style democracy. In saying this, Iran was a very developed and modern
nation during the Shah s reign where students were educated together and westernization took over.

Following the revolution, Iran experiences drastic changes in all areas of society. Women were greatly
affected during Khomeini s rule, having their rights taken away. A new Islamic dress code was
imposed on all women in Iran, this change influenced Betty, Marji s mother and Marji herself. As
stated in the Quran, women should wear the hijab in public covering themselves to gain more self
confidence and self respect knowing who they are in the society. In saying this, during Khomeini s
rule ushered in oppressive laws against women that restricted a woman s right to express her
individuality as a woman, with a dress code being one of the most important impacts seen in both
autobiographies. In the very beginning of the book, Marjane stated, We didn t really like to wear the
veil, especially since we didn t understand why we had to Marjane found the veil especially difficult to
accept as seen throughout the book because they were of a westernized mentality and did not approve
of the restrictions placed on women s rights even though [she] was very religious. Marji her family
were very modern and avant garde and saw the veil as having their basic freedoms taken away. The
hijab had turned woman against each other and there were demonstrations for and against the veil

As owners of cosmetic companies, corporate officials need to take into consideration how public

The Analytical Effectiveness Of The Assessment
As I reflect about the various assessments I utilized for my project, I have mixed feelings about the
evaluative effectiveness of the assessments. When I began examine Jen s formal assessments results
(such as, Running Records, BY and EY Benchmarks, Sound Identification/Sigh Word Inventory
forms), I believed the assessments would accurately demonstrate a positive progress Jen had made
during the course of the year. What I discovered was both an intended and unintended consequence of
assessment use. On the one hand, I found the assessments to be useful tools to gauge student literacy
abilities. On the other hand, I believe that the focus on assessment led to the teacher developing a
deficit mindset with Jen. Often times Jen s teacher narrowly would focus on Jen s inability to be at
grade level or lack of drastic improvement. In fact, the only thought Jen s teacher had was on the fact
that Jen did not meet the expected reading level for the end of the year for K 2. I believe if teachers
rely too much on assessment scores limits their ability to understand external factors or barriers that
influence a child s literacy. McKenna and Picard (2007) discuss the importance for teachers to view
students word miscue analysis beyond the checks on paper and formulas. McKenna and Picard caution
teachers to avoid focusing on the assessment scores because they believe children reading strategies to
decode words or understand a word meaning does not always mean reading proficiency.

How far do you agree that the Hundred Flowers campaign was a trick designed by Mao to trap his
opponents?
The Hundred Flowers Campaign began in 1957 when Mao Zedong declared in a speech, Let a
hundred schools of thought contend, effectively encouraging criticism from members of the Chinese
Communist Party. After members began pointing out where the party had made mistakes, however,
Mao suddenly reversed this new policy and began the Anti Rightist Movement, condemning the critics
whose opinions he had just previously invited. Was the Hundred Flowers Campaign a trick designed
by Mao to trap his opponents?

Mao s retaliation was severe, precise, and on an enormously large scale. He was obviously poised to
attack, and this hints that the Hundred Flowers Campaign was merely a wily method of enticing Mao s
prey.
There is, on the other hand, much evidence to support that the campaign was a genuine attempt at
reform. In his Contradictions speech, given to leading party workers in early 1957, Mao complained
of the oppressive way some party officials were applying policies and hinted that it was time to begin
permitting intellectuals to voice their opinions. Furthermore, in 1956, he had been tolerant of Hu Feng,
a writer who challenged the idea that all artistic merit should be judged based on Marxist Leninist
values, even as other CCP leaders viciously censured him. These two examples show that Mao,
although previously disdainful of intellectuals, may have begun to see their importance, and thus may
have been honestly inviting their criticism when the Hundred Flowers Campaign began.
In addition, the launching of the Hundred Flowers Campaign may have been triggered by events in
other communist states rather than a desire to trick party opponents. In 1956, Soviet Union leader
Nikita Khrushchev launched an attack on the previous leader Joseph Stalin, dead now for three years,
and his cult of personality, Mao probably saw how his own popularity adulating portraits of him were

Limited Edition Ford Falcon Ranchero
The Small Ranchero Built in Even Smaller Numbers
They built the Ford Ranchero from 1957 through 1979. Ford Motor Company would guide the
automobile through seven generations of changes. The small Ranchero built on [the Ford Falcon
platform] is the only compact offering of this popular model. Here we ll provide some background
information about the third generation Ford Rancheros built from 1960 through 1965. We ll also take a
deep dive into the build and identify some of the most collectible automobiles within this group.

Now a slightly larger looking automobile with a more aggressive stance, it would get the punched out

Third generation V8 Four speed Ranchero
When speaking about the third generation falcon based ranchero, you couldn t get a factory installed
V8 until 1963. This would be the only model year with an engine displacement of 260 CID as they
increased engine displacement to 289 CID for the 1964 model year. As for the build out, in 1963 Ford
produced almost 19,000 Ranchero s. However, only 1,600 of these automobiles had V8 engines.
Drilling down a little further, less than 200 would sport the combination of the V 8 engine with a four
speed manual transmission. Although classic car fans don t often look upon the Ford Falcon as a
highly collectible or desirable automobile, the 1963, Ranchero with a V8 four speed is in my mind, the
definition of a collector car. If you re interested in learning more about the full size Ranchero, I posted

Blood Pressure Procedure
Getting your blood pressure taken is the first thing that nurses do when giving a check up to their
patients. When getting blood pressure checked the nurses put the arm ring, which goes around the arm
of the patient, is very uncomfortable and bulky. I have thought of a way that uses newer technology.
The supplies I will be using would be the blood pressure monitor and a piece of the heat monitor. The
piece of the heart monitor I would be using is the clamp that goes on the patient s finger. The reason I
am going to use this is because it is, seems to be, the more efficient way to make the blood pressure
monitor less uncomfortable and bulky as I had stated earlier. Sense I m not using the clamp for the
heart monitor to check the heart I need to enhance the clamper. The way I would enhance the clamper
would be to make the sensor a little more sensitive to the blood flow going through the arteries.
Instead of the blood pressure monitor going around the patients arm it would clamp on top the finger.

Article: Several thousand snow geese have died after a snowstorm forced large flocks to take refuge in
the toxic waters of an old open pit mine in Butte, Montana. Now BP ARCO and Montana Resources,

Butte, Montana, once known as The Richest Hill on Earth, has a long history in copper mining. But, a
century of mining has left scars, and a huge toxic pit smack dab in the center. The Berkeley Pit, a

Franz Lieber and the Lieber Code
Franz Lieber and the Lieber Code In the midst of the deadliest war in American History, there stood a
voice of morality and reason on the United States soil. Franz Lieber, a German political philosopher,
created a series of political works in which he explained the importance of defining ethical boundaries
for soldiers in times of war. In 1863, President Lincoln commissioned Lieber to create a series of laws
to reflect his ideas ( Francis Lieber, 2013). Lieber went on to create what became known as Lieber s
code, which was history s first attempt to distill, formalize, and systematize various general concepts
that international law, at the time, considered proper restraints for the combatants towards each other
and towards civilians (Forbes, 1985). But what effect did the code have on the Civil War and the
preceding time period? Created at an important juncture in history, Lieber s code not only had a
profound effect on the views of controversies during the Civil War, but also influenced the way the
world viewed the ethical obligations of military personnel during times of war. Civil War Prisons
Throughout the Civil War, prisoners of war were abundant and thus a popular topic of debate. This
likely influenced Lieber s ideas as to what was important to include in the code, leading to much of
Lieber s code entailing the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war. Early in the war prisoners
received equal treatment from both sides. However the lack of a systematic programs

Introduction
According to Rittschof and Fortunato (2016), there has been little research conducted about the
correlation between child protective service worker burnout rates and supportive supervisors and
leadership personnel. The objective of this quantitative scholarly article is to inform the reader of the
high turnover and burnout rate among child protective service workers. This article also includes
information about the areas of growth that need to be improved upon in this department of social
services. According to Rittschof and Fortunato (2016), leadership, management, and supervision are
huge factors in the success and retention rate of child protective service workers. This article
specifically pinpoints, through data analysis, the correlation between effective and positive
transformational leadership and its impact on child protective service worker performance (Rittschof
and Fortuno, 2016).
Summary
Purpose/Intention 1,090 child protective service case managers were invited to participate in the study

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill
Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Every day individuals take the true beauty of our nation by visiting
recreational areas along with beaches. Oil spills create nothing, but negative effects on the areas that it
happens in. Many plants and animals are affected by this negative disaster which sickness the animals
or some even die from it. Maybe if more time and money was spent working on having more efficient
renewable energy sources than digging up a source of fuel that will eventually run out we would not
have as much of a problem. On April 20, 2010 the largest accidental marine oil spill in human history
took place in the Gulf of Mexico. The incident resulting in methane gas was released and exploded
killing 11 rig workers and having a major impact on our marine wildlife.
As Drew Griffin states The federal government estimated 4.2 million barrels of oil spilled into the

of 3.1 million barrels. (Griffin, 2015) Regardless of the amount look what damage it has done and the
many lives that are affected by this disaster. Many say for 87 days in a row due to an uncapped

Essay about History of Home Schooling
History of Home Schooling
Before public schools emerged, children were educated in the home by their parents. They were taught
arithmetic, practical skills, and to read and write. Some wealthy families preferred hiring a tutor for
their children (Koetzsch, 1997). In the 1840s, prominent leaders such as Horace Mann lead a
movement to institute public schools in the United States (Thattai, 2001). These reformers argued that
public schools would create good citizens, unite society, and prevent crime and poverty. As a result of
their efforts, public elementary schools evolved in American society by the end of the 19th century.
Massachusetts was the first state to pass a compulsory attendance law, ruling that all children had to ...

Many parents followed Holt in his ideas about education and still home school their children based on
Holt s philosophy (Koetzsch, 1997).
The Christian home school movement began in the United States during the 1980 s. Conservative
Christian families believe in a literal translation of the bible and generally have conservative social
views. Public schools and American society are a threat to their beliefs and values. Conservative
Christians believe that public schools are anti religious, dominated by materialism, plagued by
violence, full of sexual promiscuity, and plagued by drug use. Approximately 80 percent of home
schooled children are Conservative Christians (Koetzsch, 1997). By the late 1980 s, many parents
were turning to home schooling as an alternate form of education. By 1998, all fifty states had laws
allowing home schooling (Koetzsch, 1997).
Advantages and Disadvantages to Home Schooling
There are many reasons why parents decide to home school their children. Home schoolers can be
divided into two main groups, ideologues and pedagogues. Ideologues home school their children for
religious purposes. Pedagogues home school because they believe they can teach their children better
than public or private institutions (Thomas, 1998). Parents decide to home school due to religious
reasons because parents have

Goldilocks Research Synthesis Essay
To juxtapose this argument made by the REH, the next key factor is something called the habitable
zone. The habitable zone is defined as a region within which Earth like planets might possess the
moderate environmental conditions for advanced life to form (von Bloh). Many of these new planets
discovered are gas giants with atmospheres too turbulent to support life, so these planets habitable
zone is said to be low or nonexistent. The existence of Earth like planets, however, is just as common
as the existence of these extreme planets. Traits of the habitable zone, such as a carbon silicate cycle,
solar luminosity, and plate tectonics, were analyzed for 200 different possible Earth like planets in
Franck, von Bloh, and Bounama s research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These conditions can range from the temperature of the universe, the background radiation leftover
from the Big Bang, and the amount of elements located in the universe. It is a well known fact that
organic molecules are common within the universe. As stated before, galaxies consist of billions of
stars and then multiply that by the amount of galaxies in the universe; one can see why there are a
plethora of stars. When stars die, the ones that explode, through a process called a supernova, release
enough heavy elements into space that are essential for life to begin. Vilenkin states that the
shockwave of these explosions are enough to propel these heavier elements into areas of dense clouds
that have the potential to form new binary systems of a star and a planet. This new planet now has the
chance to form life. But, the REH claims that the destructive nature of space is more prone to killing
off any budding life than to help life develop. There is galactic cannibalism, which is when two
galaxies collide and ripe each other apart with the force of gravity, or even stars dying can be a
catalyst to the end of extraterrestrial life forming. According to Vilekin and other astronomers, the
universe has been cooling down, albeit slowly and over the course of billions of years; but this seems
to be beneficial to the potential existence of other life. This cooling universe has become

The Issue Of Limited Liability
In light of the decision in Prest, this essay will argue that this principle has been taken too far, and it
has become too easy for parent companies to escape the obligations of its subsidiaries. It will begin
with a discussion of limited liability and examine the when the veil may be pierced after Prest. Next, it
will discuss the current arguments calling for reform.
The concept of limited liability was conceptualized to promote enterprise through limitation of risk. In
many ways, the argument remains applicable today. As a detailed exposition is beyond the scope of
this essay, this essay will examine the two major lines of debate. Firstly, the argument that limited
liability encourages enterprise is normally linked with passive investors who have no other interest in
the company other than that their money is invested within. However, on the opposite spectrum, the
power to purchase shares was also given to companies having a separate legal personality. In
corporate group scenarios, this essay will support the arguments of Blumberg and Wright that the
parent company is not a passive investor , but rather an active force behind the subsidiary. Thus, there
is a clear danger, as evidenced in cases such as Adams, that limited liability can encourage risk that is
excessive, as owners engage in excessively risky activities [being] protected from liability.
This is demonstrated through the observation that directors in privately managed companies stand
behind the veil

What effect does alcohol have on a person s health and life expectancy?
The consumption of alcoholic beverages dates back to approximately 10,000 years ago when
‘viticulture (the selective cultivation of grape vines for making wine) is said to have originated in the
mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas. (1) It is one of the most commonly used psychoactive
drugs in the world. Alcohol interacts with gamma amino bultyric acid (GABA) receptors in the brain,
this is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in humans and is synthesized from glutamic acid. (1a)
Since then the production of alcohol has flourished and evolved becoming a huge part of today s

In the mild stages of this disease there are little or no signs of illness, however when the condition
becomes chronic, symptoms such as nausea and jaundice are seen, (jaundice is caused by a high level
of bilirubin). The damage caused in the chronic stages can eventually turn into alcoholic cirrhosis.
Alcoholic cirrhosis involves the replacement of normal liver tissue with scar tissue called fibrosis.
This gradual process affects the normal structure and regrowth of liver cells and the liver gradually
loses its ability to function well.
Alcohol Metabolism
Alcohol is detoxified and removed from the body to prevent alcohol accumulating and destroying
cells and organs, through a process called oxidation. A small amount a alcohol escapes the body
unchanged through breathing and urine. Once the alcohol enters the body it is distributed throughout

can eat its own body weight in just one night! The reproduction stage of the platypus is quite
simple. The two mate underwater, and the female lays her eggs in the burrow made for the eggs.
The eggs usually hatch after one month, and the young suck on mammary glands on the mother s
stomach for their milk ( Platypus Facts ). The young ones suck on mammary glands because
the mother lacks nipples ( Platypus facts, Information, Pictures ). Since the platypus is
underwater most of the time, its food is an easy guess. They eat

Social Play Analysis
A). Play as defined in our book is an activity that is intrinsically motivated, focused on means rather
than ends, different from purely exploratory behavior, nonliteral, and free from externally applies rules
(Gross, 225). There are different types of play such as play with objects, social play, and pretend
symbolic play. Play with objects depends on age for example a child between the age of birth to 4
months uses exploratory type of play, repetitive motor movements such kicking legs, reaching for or
sucking their toes, and rolling over. Whereas a child who is between the age of 24 months and 36
months uses fine motor play which allows them to play with Play doh and put together puzzles. Social
play is playing with a responsive human playmate. This could be the child s mother, father or
caregiver. Pretend/symbolic play usually emerges after the first birthday, when children behave in a
nonliteral way, acting as if they were performing familiar routines, such as eating, going to sleep, or
washing their face (Gross, 195). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This topic is interesting to me as it amazes me how as we grow playing takes different forms to us. It
is also interesting because as we get older we can give meaning to objects making playing more
intentional. Playing also caught my attention as before reading about this topic in our book I would
have never correlated pointing and naming games as mothers using it as a way to teach their child, I
use to believe they would do this just to have fun with their child. I was interested in this topic as well
because I never knew play was different in cultures I always believed it meant the same thing. It also
interested me as when I get older and have kids of my own I will use play to teach, a process known as

Reproduction within Sea Lions
1
Reproducing is the only method of insuring genetic DNA of organisms is passed on to the next
generation. There are two types of reproduction, asexual and sexual. From the family Otariidea, Sea
lions use sexual reproduction meaning they require a mate to produce offspring. There are 6 living sea
lion species in the world. The Japanese Sea Lion, Zalophus japonicas, became extinct within the 1970
s. The Steller sea lion has the largest sea lion population and lives in the Northern Pacific. The
California sea lion is the best known and seen in zoos and the circus. An average weight of a sea lion
is 400 pounds and having a length of 6 feet long. Sea lions have a variety of behavioral techniques
when mating. Male and female sea lions have specific behaviors during the mating season such as
defensive tactics and vocalization.
There are different types of mating systems such as monogamy and polygamy. The sea lion species
uses a polygynous mating system. A polygynous mating system is defined as one male mate with
multiple females within a breeding season (Flatz, R. et al,2012). The females and males of Sea Lions
have different behaviors when reproducing. The females can only produce a limited number of
offspring therefore they maximize their success by producing high quality offspring. There are
numerous ways the male does to ensure their genes are passed on to the next generation such as
aggression. The males maximize their reproductive success by mating with many females to

The Toronto Blue Jays successfully advance to the American League Division Series after winning the
wild card game against the Baltimore Orioles, in Toronto last night. The Blue Jays celebrated a 5 2

the bottom of the 11th inning. Fans erupted in cheers at the Rogers Centre, as the foghorn blared to

People are drinking beers, eating foot long hotdogs, eating popcorn, and enjoying themselves. Kids

said Schneider. At the bottom of the 11th inning, as Encarnacion stepped onto the plate, Devon Travis
and Josh Donaldson were already on base. Travis was on third, while Donaldson was on first. With
one out already for the Jays, if Encarnacion hit this the Jays would have a walk off. And win.
Moments after he swung, the stadium grew louder. The ball was clearly going to be a home run.
Encarnacion threw his hands up in the air, and the Rogers Centre was filled with cheering. Fans were
going crazy, jumping up and down, waving their complimentary Blue Jays towels, and high fiving one

again. Spirits continued to run high as fans proceeded to flood onto the streets of downtown Toronto to

Introduction of Disease Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), also known as acute lymphoid or
lymphocytic leukemia, is a cancer of the white blood cells (McCoy, 2015). More specifically, it is a
cancerous conversion and procreation of lymphoid progenitor cells in the blood, extramedullary sites,
and in the bone marrow (Terwilliger, Abdul Hay, 2017). In 2017, 62,130 people were expected to be
diagnosed with leukemia and there were an estimated 363,794 people living with or in remission from

The abnormal behavior of the white blood cells decreases the body s ability to fight off infections and
lead to a decrease of other blood cells. ALL is deadlier in adults but has a high survival rate in
children. Most children are cured after treatment and the number of adults in remission has grown in
the past decades.

Gaunilo s Ontological Argument
One of the criticisms of the ontological argument is by the monk Gaunilo. Gaunilo tries to use the
same concept of Anselm s argument to refute the claims he made. He tries to use the analogy of The
Perfect Island . (1) A perfect island is an island after which nothing greater exist. (2)The perfect island

similar to the logical reasoning behind Anslem s argument. He reasons that the thought of a perfect

Not Guilty In Plato s Apology
In his influential dialogue Apology , Plato employs Socrates pleading not guilty to his allegations in
his trial to argue that the men deemed as wise, are actually not as wise as they appear to be. Searching
further into this text will reveal how Plato intended for Apology to have a deeper meaning. Socrates
questions the wise politicians, the philosophers, and the crafters of their knowledge and wisdom to
discover that they themselves do not comprehend what their work is about. In Apology Socrates states
When I began to talk with him, I could not help thinking, that he was not really wise, although he was
thought wise by many, and still wiser by himself; and thereupon I tried to explain to him that he
thought himself wise, but was not really

State And Citizenship Of The State

Introduction: The state and citizenship can be seen in different perspectives. In one way we can
perceive state as an autonomous unit and there arises a struggle in rights and obligations between state
and people in the society. Secondly ,the relation between the state and people in the society. And
thirdly, we can see it as an identity and nationality which has its both positive and negative effects. In
liberalism state is viewed as fusion of all the individuals in the society or the state as an interest of the

Encountering state and citizenship in daily life
According to article 12 the term state includes Government and parliament of India, government and
the legislature of each of the states all local or other authorities of Indiamunicipality, panchayat
,statutory and non statutory authorities. As a whole it includes all the agencies. They are all under the
control of the government of India. The component of state include constitution, territory, sovereignty,
impersonal use of power ,Authority, taxation and citizenship. The fundamental and most important
component which can be seenis the citizenship.Like any other state the constitution of India through
citizenship confers the rights and obligation to the people. The Articles 5 to 11 under part II deals with
the citizenship. The citizenship act of 1955 provides us five ways of describing an individual as citizen
of India. They include who was born on the territory of India. Either of whose parents was born in the
territory of India, naturalization, registration and incorporation of territory. Though Indian constitution
visualize dual polity it provides us with only single citizenship. The citizenship act of 1955 regulates
the provision for the citizenship. For all the citizen of India,

Guilt In The Play Macbeth By Veronica Roth
Guilt provides a painful consequence for actions... When people feel guilty a study found that they
usually do one of two things. They try to do something thoughtful for either the person they hurt, or
simply anyone they know. As a result, guilty people feel as if they need to do something to make up
for what they have done in order to make themselves feel less guilty (Markman). In the play Macbeth,
written by Shakespeare, Macbeth handles his remorse differently. Shakespeare communicates to the
audience that power corrupts even the most loyal people leaving them with an overwhelming feeling
of guilt. In the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, characters also show feelings of remorse due to
their reactions on events in their life which leads to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lady Macbeth was found sleepwalking one night by one of her maids. She muttered in her sleep The
Thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these hands ne er be clean? (Shakespeare V, i,

and Macbeth have done. Even though Lady Macbeth did not murder anyone she feels culpable for the
actions of Macbeth and the death of the people in her kingdom. In the same way, Tris, a character
from the Divergent series, found herself in a situation killing her close friend Will. Tris wakes from a
dream remembering her nightmare For a moment I see Will standing before me.... I could have shot
his hand, why didn t I, why? and I almost scream his name. Then hes gone. (Roth, 10). Before Tris

Macbeth partly to blame for King Duncan s death led them to a subconscious remorse because they
both could not tell anyone else how they feel or what they have done. Both characters are breaking

Causes And Failures Of The League Of Nations
Introduction
I can predict with absolute certainty that within another generation there will be another world war if
the nations of the world do not concert the method by which to prevent it.
It was with these words that Woodrow Wilson called for the formation of the League of Nations. By
1919, after extensive discourse between the Big Three, the league was born and its ideals and structure
concocted. The League s chief goals compromised of preventing war through collective security,
disarmament and using negations to solve disputes between nations. After the end of World War I,
such an organisation was essential to solve border disputes and prevent another war. After numerous
noteworthy successes and a few initial failures in the 1920s, the League of Nations finally proved
inept of preventing hostility from the Axis in the 1930s. And, as stated by Dr. Afroz Alam, the onset of

made the league appear as incompetent, due to failed solutions, secret treaties and unfair justice. These
events are proof that peace couldn t be maintained due to self interests and lack of mutual co
operation. This allowed dictators like Hitler to get their way, paving the path to war. I believe that the
reason of paramount importance for the failure were self interest and the lack of collaboration that

The Student Movement of 1968 Essay
After the Revolution of 1910, the Mexican political system depended on tactics of repression,
manipulation and coercion to control the actions of the opposition. In 1968 the government faced a
movement that could not be controlled through the same tactics. The Student Movement of 1968
represented a changing in the political system where those who felt suppressed voiced their discontent,
in spite of government suppression. Luis Echeverria, the president following the Student Movement,
faced political turmoil and instability during his presidency; he instituted reforms that were considered

hundreds died and countless other were injured, or disappeared completely that night. The massacre at
Tlatelolco signified the inability of the PRI regime to control the opposition. Their techniques of

the movement was localized in Mexico City and was represented elsewhere in weaker forms, the
social and political implications that the movement had has a deeper impact in Mexican history.
Although the students initiated the movement in response to the acts of disproportionate violence that
the government acted in towards the students, it continued to be fueled by underlying issues with the
government. For one, the students were enraged at the expenditures that Mexico was making for the
Olympic Games; they viewed the Olympic Games as a spectacle for the world, while the people in
Mexico lived in mediocre conditions. Students wanted to strip away the mask and destroy forever the

Importance of Identity in Anglo
J. M. Synge is one of the most prominent Irish writers of the twentieth century; his writing
characterizes a broad, multifaceted range of political, social and religious anxieties shaping Ireland for
the duration of its most remarkable period of change, which transformed the place from a relatively
peaceful country to a more political and aggressive location. The picture Synge creates shows us that
the question of identity relating to Ireland is problematic; however it has produced and provoked some
of the greatest literature of the century. As G. J. Watson has asserted: However painful the question of
identity may be for the Irish in real life, it has functioned, deeply embedded as it is in the Irish

Ronan McDonald states: Enter the playboy Christy Mahon. Christy s poetry, like the cultural
flowering of the Ascendancy, is based on a dirty deed that is aestheticized as a gallous story. In the
course of the action it is exposed and then transcended. Christy comes to the Mayoites carrying a mark
of culpability which, in the course of the play, he is privileged to purge. Culture confronts and expiates
its violent origins in the controlled laboratory of the stage. The play comically, but unnervingly,
explores the process by which violence is glorified and aestheticized. Yet it also, by a theatrical slight
of hand, reveals the violence as chimerical, and allows Christy to pass through and survive the
implications of his supposed atrocity. Ireland is shown for what it is; Synge offers us a critique which
is almost satirical. There is a mystical quality to Ireland which is emphasised by its storytelling and
folklore (Shanaitue), in which the Irish are a `nation of heroes ; a notion which is explored through the
figure of Christy who is himself a `Christ like figure as he almost brings his father back from the dead
in a sense. There is a sub textual reference to the New Testament in this father son relationship;
Christy is in conflict with his father and in a certain respect he is `sacrificed when he is burnt because
he did not live up to the expectations people had of him. Synge treats the conflict between the
relations with irony, and it is

The Oompa Loompas In Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
Roald Dahl was a British author, who wrote short stories, poems and screenplays. His books have sold
more than 250 million copies worldwide (www.roalddahl.com). His most famous book was the first
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book which was published in 1964. This book got a lot of negative
feedback not based on the storyline, but based on certain characters in the book. This book focuses on
golden tickets and there are only five, one of them being found by a character named Charlie, who
happens to be poor. The owner, Willy Wonka leads the five winning children on a delightful and
frequently dangerous journey of his factory and only one child wins the big prize which in this case, is
his factory. However, within the factory there are workers called Oompa Loopmas, who are depicted
as black Pygmy people from Africa (Dahl 73). In the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, in
1971, by Mel Stuart the Oompa Loompas are shown as dwarfs with orange skin. Last but not least in
the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton depicts the Oompa Loompas as brown
skin people. Throughout all three different versions of the one story the depictions of the Oompa
Loompas skin color changes, but the power dynamics between Willy Wonka, owner, and the Oompa
Loompa stays the same and that confirms that they are slave workers especially within the 1964 book.

Dangers Of Environmental Pollution
For many years scientists, along with concerned patrons, have been contemplating climate change and
what dangers it presents to human kind. Climate change refers to the variation in normal weather
patterns caused due to pollution. Environmental pollution refers to the contamination of ecosystem
and the surrounding atmosphere by different forms of pollutants (Chemicals and energies)
(omcis.org). Environmental pollution and climate is becoming a more substantial concern worldwide
as the years go on. Numerous studies have been ran throughout the years showing statistical reasoning
behind the environmental changes. Environmentalists debate about what the leading cause is and what
we are able to do to stop such turmoil.
The threat of global climate change has been a cloud of smog, lingering for quite some time. Global
warming is the increase of earth s normal surface temperature due to impact of greenhouse gases
(omics.org). We are threatening our own kind with our reckless lifestyle towards our environment. As
the world urbanizes and industrializes, and as effects of climate change intensify, environmental crises
will increasingly devastate the lives, health, and livelihoods of people around the globe (Human
Rights Watch). We as human beings need oxygen released from trees in order to breathe. Nature, on
the other hand needs the carbon dioxide that we exhale. Keeping this cycle continuous is key to
survival for both variants. With the introduction of particulates,

Social Differences Of The European Way Of Life In Colonial...
Although undoubtedly influenced by England, the American Colonies formed their own unique way
of life. One aspect much like England is the layout of the town and its house, especially in Salem, was
rather haphazard with streets and alleys crossing at irregular angles. Unlike Europe, property
ownership was not the only way to ensure a fortune, a considerable number of Americans found New
Money through their occupation. The upset of wealth standards also led to the development of
different and more varied social groups and hierarchies. The different classes had different cuisine and
past times as well, with the higher class being more European in nature. Travel was an interesting
affair in America, with the land s rather extreme weather and the limited forms of transportation. Life
in Colonial America, and specifically Salem, was significantly different to that experienced in England
due to the difference in lodging, occupations, social groups, leisure, and environment.
Since there was less of a social divide between the colonist when they settled, most of the time the
poor and rich lived right next to each other, with no distinct neighborhoods. This led to a slight
reconciliation between the classes, drawing them together. The people were still aware of the status of
the elite, but they were no longer physically separated as they were in England. One method of
acknowledgement is that whenever a noteworthy family moved or built a house on a street, said street

Change In Film
Film, being both visual and audible, has become a power source of art throughout its development. In
many cases, films are used as a way to promote social change. The 2000 X Men film can be seen as a
cry for equality. A supernatural film about mutants versus humans sends an underlying message about
how people may not feel accepted or like they fit in just because they don t conform to society. During
the mid 1950s and early 1960s movies were used to express the desire to break free, as a people, from
the ideals of perfection and gender norms as America underwent a huge social change that quickly
became known as The Sexual Revolution. (Escoffier, Sexual Revolution). Films such as Douglas Sirk

Then the pressures of society weigh down on her and cause her to go back on her feelings, which on it
s own conveys that if you want to be happy, you need to be your own person. Rebel Without a Cause
(1955) is about a troubled teenage boy that wants to find a purpose in life despite being neglected by
his parents and feeling as if he didn t belong in his society. This ultimately leads to a tragic end for
him and it sends the message that not being accepted isn t okay. Some Like It Hot (1959) is about men
who dress as women to escape thugs and the women they meet who march to the beat of their own
drum. This movie was heavily considered against the norm but was made despite American film
censorship s contempt. Men in women s clothing was extremely looked down upon, which made this
movie bold and inspirational to anyone who felt like they wanted to do or be something or someone
although it might be heavily frowned upon ( Some Like It Hot (1959) Analysis ). In Mulvey s Visual
Pleasure and the Narrative Cinema, she talks about the already preconceived notions we have already
formed about gender and how that plays into movie making and

A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw Essay
A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw
The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is an odd story about a young woman who, leaving her small
country home for the first time, takes a job as a governess in a wealthy household. Shortly after her
arrival, she begins to suffer from insomnia and fancies that she sees ghosts roaming about the grounds.
James is a master story teller and, at times, the complexities of the story make it difficult to follow.
The Turn of the Screw is a story within a story, the tale of the governess being read aloud as a ghost
story among friends. Harold C. Goddard wrote a fascinating piece of criticism entitled A Pre Freudian
Reading of The Turn of the Screw. When applied to the book, his ... Show more content on

She is very excited at this point and one might infer that she is infatuated with her employer. However,
all her hopes of a relationship are unrealistic, as there is a vast difference in class between herself and
the man from Harley Street. Furthermore, her employer gives her strict instructions [t]hat she should
never trouble him (6). So we see that she is never to communicate with the object of her affections
again. At the end of her interview, after she agreed to these stipulations, we are told that when ...he
held her hand, thanking her for the sacrifice, she already felt rewarded (6). This description proves that
the new governess is in love with her employer. Later in the book, during her first encounter with the
ghost of Peter Quint, it is clear that she is thinking of her love as she says that her first shock at seeing
a man in the tower was that it was not the person [she] had precipitately supposed it would be (15). It
is clear that she was hoping it would be the man from Harley Street.
According to Goddard s theory, the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are images conjured up in
the mind of the unstable, young governess. Goddard addresses this issue accordingly. To the reader,
this may seem like a strange notion because the governess is able to give a description of the ghosts
that seems eerily accurate, even though she never saw them before. In the case of Peter Quint, the only
distinguishing characteristic about her

Lynching In America Essay
During the nineteenth century, lynching was brought to America by British Isles and after the Civil
War white Americans lynching African American increased. Causing and bringing fear into their
world. In the Southern United States, lynching became a method used by the whites to terrorize the
Blacks and to remain in control with white supremacy. The hatred and fear that was installed into the
white people s head had caused them to turn to the lynch law. The term lynching means to be put to
death by hanging by a mob action without legal sanction. So many white people were supportive of
lynching because it was a sign of power that the white people had. Lynching of the black people was
used frequently by white people, their is no specific detail of how many times they had done it, but
lynching of black people has lasted from 1882 to 1968. Lynching also is in fact a inhuman
combination of racism and sadism which was used to support the south s caste system, (Gandhi).
During this time, lynching was used to control, intimidate, and manipulate a certain group of people,
striking fear into their hearts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These types of sundown towns were connected to lynching and lynch mobs because they re known for
their behavior as a all white neighborhood in the United States that practice a form of segregation by
enforcing restrictions and excluding people of other races from their town. The name came from signs
put up that said blacks need to leave before sundown. Because lynching mobs were able to influence
their own governments into supporting lynch mobs, there was no one to stop these crimes also known
as Lynch Laws. The Lynch Laws were created by Charles Lynch, who ordered legal punishments on
Tory acts and was also an administration of punishment. Because of this law, lynching was supported
by many whites because they felt that they gave a warning to the

The Literary Modernism Time Period
The literary modernism time period was a movement in literature that started in the early 1890s and
was very eventful. During this era there were many considerable events taking place such as The
Great War (also known as World War One ), which started in 1914. This War lasted for four years and
finally ended in 1918, but its effects lasted much longer. The financial instability of Europe and death
caused by this First World War gave people a sense of patriotism that unified them. It made people
think of not only the society as a whole, but themselves as individuals ( Modernism. ). This new
individualist mindset made people think more about their thoughts and actions than they had ever
previously done before. Because individuals thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Asbestos And Its Effects On Australia
Asbestos had been widely used in many industries around the world due to its versatility, strength, fire
resistant and insulating properties of the fibres. They are used in the manufacturing industry as vinyl
floor tiles, electrical components, gasket products, brake linings and disc pads. The three main type of
asbestos, white, blue and brown can also be found in cement sheeting and piping in the construction
industry. However, the use of asbestos in Australia and many other countries had been ban due to its
known health effects which is include pleural diseases, lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
Despite being banned in Australia nowadays, asbestos can still be found in most of older construction,
residential and commercial area as well as abandoned mining site. Studies show that the building
workers, specifically the plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters and electricians the highest risk of getting
mesothelioma, disease from asbestos fibres (Peto, J., Hodgson, J.T., Matthews, F.T., Jacqueline, R.,
1995). According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the number of mesotheliomas
cases are increasing and expected to reach 18000 in recent. Though the asbestos is known as
hazardous material, it can only affect the health if the asbestos fibres become airborne and are inhaled.
The primary route for the asbestos to enter the body is through the inhalation processes of the
contaminated air (Safework Australia, 2011). Unusually, small fibrous particles of

The Effects Of Nickel On Ash Toxicity
Several metals have been tested for their role in fly ash toxicity. Although universally high toxicity has
been attributed to vanadium [Bhatnagar, 2004 and Liu et al., 2005], nickel is generally not far behind
[Salnikow et al., 2004 and Kurowska Bal, 2010]. Nickel is a primary contributor to the inhalation
cancer risk because of its relative high concentration in fly ash and the known carcinogenic potency of
its sub sulfide forms (Ni3S2) [Dreher et al., 1997]. Huang et al. (2015) suggest, that oil fly ash surface
metals (like vanadium) may be the key determinants in the induction and/or amplification of allergic
responses.
The metal fraction of oil ashes has been shown, in both in vivo and in vitro studies, to increase lung
injury and cytotoxicity (Dreher et al., 1997; Dye et al., 1999; Gavett et al., 1997; Kodavanti et al.,
1998; 2001), increase lung inflammation (Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase airway reactivity
(Gavett et al., 1997; Lambert et al., 2000), alter cytokine production (Dye et al., 1999; Carter et al.,
1997), and increase oxidative stress (Ghio et al., 2002b; Kim et al., 2003; Lewis et al., 2003)
Kadiiska et al. (1997) reported that the vanadium, nickel and iron in oil ashes produced a significant
influx of neutrophils and proteins indicative of acute inflammation, and significant increases in the
formation of free radicals in rates. Vanadium may play the most significant role in the inflammatory
response produced by oil ash. Dreher et

Why Is Socrates My Teacher
Socrates was the first Athenian philosopher and he is very interesting figure, not only of his teaching
methods, but also of his whole life and way of thinking. In the centre of Socrates philosophy is human
being but, first of all, he sees a human as moral being. According to Socrates, learning process is
closely connected with relations which will be build between the teacher and a student and he as a
teacher should give to the student all accumulated experience of previous older generations. I want to
have Socrates as my teacher, because of the fact that, all his philosophy and teaching methods are
relevant and important nowadays too, even if he was living in Ancient Greece many years ago.
Unfortunately, today many of us forget about the main aims and principles of life which every of us
had studied in elementary school, such as moral self improvement and as it known, Socrates was one
of the founders of the doctrine of human kindness, about which our ... Show more content on

This quote explains to us Socrates wisdom or so called Socratic paradox. He means by this phrase,
that we must question all what we taught, understand or already know, the doubts is the background of
wisdom and for one hundred percent we can know only that we know nothing, so we need to question
everything. Furthermore, Socrates as philosopher is famous for his work on logic and epistemology.
Epistemology is a part of philosophy about the nature of knowledge and explains what knowledge
exactly is. In addition in today s world people deviate from the norms of morality and forget about
kindness, honesty, tolerance, all are just trying to survive in cruelty and all think only about
themselves. If we will have the teacher as Socrates we can avoid this way of living and became again
more virtuous and kind as it used to be. According to Plato , Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting
a hard battle. But we can

Riley are you ready to go? Yes I excitedly replied to my father. Are your clubs in car? They are I
answered, eager to begin the exciting day. We jumped in my dad s ford explorer that warm July

It was not just any routine day for me, it was an opportunity to have a good time golfing with my dad.

It was an Islamic revolution which attempted to replace Mohammed Reza Shah, with an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution. Strong opposition against the Shah showed that the people wanted a religious ruler rather than someone they saw as an American puppet. Many Iranian people would think that the Shah was a capitalist pig who ran a corrupt and repressive regime but tried to embrace western style democracy. The Analytical Effectiveness Of The Assessment As I reflect about the various assessments I utilized for my project, I have mixed feelings about the evaluative effectiveness of the assessments. When I began examine Jen s formal assessments results (such as, Running Records, BY and EY Benchmarks, Sound Identification/Sigh Word Inventory forms), I believed the assessments would accurately demonstrate a positive progress Jen had made during the course of the year. What I discovered was both an intended and unintended consequence of assessment use. On the one hand, I found the assessments to be useful tools to gauge student literacy abilities. On the other hand, I believe that the focus on assessment led to the teacher developing a deficit mindset with Jen. Often times Jen s teacher narrowly would focus on Jen s inability to be at grade level or lack of drastic improvement. In fact, the only thought Jen s teacher had was on the fact that Jen did not meet the expected reading level for the end of the year for K 2. I believe if teachers rely too much on assessment scores limits their ability to understand external factors or barriers that influence a child s literacy. McKenna and Picard (2007) discuss the importance for teachers to view students word miscue analysis beyond the checks on paper and formulas. McKenna and Picard caution teachers to avoid focusing on the assessment scores because they believe children reading strategies to decode words or understand a word meaning does not always mean reading proficiency. ... The Hundred Flowers Campaign began in 1957 when Mao Zedong declared in a speech, Let a hundred schools of thought contend, effectively encouraging criticism from members of the Chinese Communist Party. He was obviously poised to attack, and this hints that the Hundred Flowers Campaign was merely a wily method of enticing Mao s prey. There is, on the other hand, much evidence to support that the campaign was a genuine attempt at reform. In his Contradictions speech, given to leading party workers in early 1957, Mao complained of the oppressive way some party officials were applying policies and hinted that it was time to begin permitting intellectuals to voice their opinions. Furthermore, in 1956, he had been tolerant of Hu Feng, a writer who challenged the idea that all artistic merit should be judged based on Marxist Leninist values, even as other CCP leaders viciously censured him. These two examples show that Mao, although previously disdainful of intellectuals, may have begun to see their importance, and thus may have been honestly inviting their criticism when the Hundred Flowers Campaign began. In addition, the launching of the Hundred Flowers Campaign may have been triggered by events in other communist states rather than a desire to trick party opponents. Franz Lieber, a German political philosopher, created a series of political works in which he explained the importance of defining ethical boundaries for soldiers in times of war. In 1863, President Lincoln commissioned Lieber to create a series of laws to reflect his ideas ( Francis Lieber, 2013). Lieber went on to create what became known as Lieber s code, which was history s first attempt to distill, formalize, and systematize various general concepts that international law, at the time, considered proper restraints for the combatants towards each other and towards civilians (Forbes, 1985). But what effect did the code have on the Civil War and the preceding time period? Created at an important juncture in history, Lieber s code not only had a profound effect on the views of controversies during the Civil War, but also influenced the way the world viewed the ethical obligations of military personnel during times of war. Civil War Prisons Throughout the Civil War, prisoners of war were abundant and thus a popular topic of debate. This likely influenced Lieber s ideas as to what was important to include in the code, leading to much of Lieber s code entailing the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war. Public schools and American society are a threat to their beliefs and values. Conservative Christians believe that public schools are anti religious, dominated by materialism, plagued by violence, full of sexual promiscuity, and plagued by drug use. By 1998, all fifty states had laws allowing home schooling (Koetzsch, 1997). Advantages and Disadvantages to Home Schooling There are many reasons why parents decide to home school their children. Home schoolers can be divided into two main groups, ideologues and pedagogues. Ideologues home school their children for religious purposes. The habitable zone is defined as a region within which Earth like planets might possess the moderate environmental conditions for advanced life to form (von Bloh). Many of these new planets discovered are gas giants with atmospheres too turbulent to support life, so these planets habitable zone is said to be low or nonexistent. The existence of Earth like planets, however, is just as common as the existence of these extreme planets. These conditions can range from the temperature of the universe, the background radiation leftover from the Big Bang, and the amount of elements located in the universe. It is a well known fact that organic molecules are common within the universe. As stated before, galaxies consist of billions of stars and then multiply that by the amount of galaxies in the universe; one can see why there are a plethora of stars. When stars die, the ones that explode, through a process called a supernova, release enough heavy elements into space that are essential for life to begin. Vilenkin states that the shockwave of these explosions are enough to propel these heavier elements into areas of dense clouds that have the potential to form new binary systems of a star and a planet. This new planet now has the chance to form life. But, the REH claims that the destructive nature of space is more prone to killing off any budding life than to help life develop. There is galactic cannibalism, which is when two galaxies collide and ripe each other apart with the force of gravity, or even stars dying can be a catalyst to the end of extraterrestrial life forming. • 16. The Issue Of Limited Liability In light of the decision in Prest, this essay will argue that this principle has been taken too far, and it has become too easy for parent companies to escape the obligations of its subsidiaries. It will begin with a discussion of limited liability and examine the when the veil may be pierced after Prest. Next, it will discuss the current arguments calling for reform. The concept of limited liability was conceptualized to promote enterprise through limitation of risk. In many ways, the argument remains applicable today. As a detailed exposition is beyond the scope of this essay, this essay will examine the two major lines of debate. Firstly, the argument that limited liability encourages enterprise is normally linked with passive investors who have no other interest in the company other than that their money is invested within. However, on the opposite spectrum, the power to purchase shares was also given to companies having a separate legal personality. In corporate group scenarios, this essay will support the arguments of Blumberg and Wright that the parent company is not a passive investor , but rather an active force behind the subsidiary. Thus, there is a clear danger, as evidenced in cases such as Adams, that limited liability can encourage risk that is excessive, as owners engage in excessively risky activities [being] protected from liability. This is demonstrated through the observation that directors in privately managed companies stand behind the veil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Play as defined in our book is an activity that is intrinsically motivated, focused on means rather than ends, different from purely exploratory behavior, nonliteral, and free from externally applies rules (Gross, 225). There are different types of play such as play with objects, social play, and pretend symbolic play. Play with objects depends on age for example a child between the age of birth to 4 months uses exploratory type of play, repetitive motor movements such kicking legs, reaching for or sucking their toes, and rolling over. The League s chief goals compromised of preventing war through collective security, disarmament and using negations to solve disputes between nations. After the end of World War I, such an organisation was essential to solve border disputes and prevent another war. After numerous noteworthy successes and a few initial failures in the 1920s, the League of Nations finally proved inept of preventing hostility from the Axis in the 1930s. Synge is one of the most prominent Irish writers of the twentieth century; his writing characterizes a broad, multifaceted range of political, social and religious anxieties shaping Ireland for the duration of its most remarkable period of change, which transformed the place from a relatively peaceful country to a more political and aggressive location. The picture Synge creates shows us that the question of identity relating to Ireland is problematic; however it has produced and provoked some of the greatest literature of the century. As G. J. Christy s poetry, like the cultural flowering of the Ascendancy, is based on a dirty deed that is aestheticized as a gallous story. In the course of the action it is exposed and then transcended. Christy comes to the Mayoites carrying a mark of culpability which, in the course of the play, he is privileged to purge. Culture confronts and expiates its violent origins in the controlled laboratory of the stage. The play comically, but unnervingly, explores the process by which violence is glorified and aestheticized. Yet it also, by a theatrical slight of hand, reveals the violence as chimerical, and allows Christy to pass through and survive the implications of his supposed atrocity. Ireland is shown for what it is; Synge offers us a critique which is almost satirical. There is a mystical quality to Ireland which is emphasised by its storytelling and folklore (Shanaitue), in which the Irish are a `nation of heroes ; a notion which is explored through the figure of Christy who is himself a `Christ like figure as he almost brings his father back from the dead in a sense. There is a sub textual reference to the New Testament in this father son relationship; Christy is in conflict with his father and in a certain respect he is `sacrificed when he is burnt because he did not live up to the expectations people had of him. His books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide (www.roalddahl.com). His most famous book was the first Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book which was published in 1964. This book got a lot of negative feedback not based on the storyline, but based on certain characters in the book. This book focuses on golden tickets and there are only five, one of them being found by a character named Charlie, who happens to be poor. The owner, Willy Wonka leads the five winning children on a delightful and frequently dangerous journey of his factory and only one child wins the big prize which in this case, is his factory. However, within the factory there are workers called Oompa Loopmas, who are depicted as black Pygmy people from Africa (Dahl 73). In the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, in 1971, by Mel Stuart the Oompa Loompas are shown as dwarfs with orange skin. Last but not least in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton depicts the Oompa Loompas as brown skin people. Throughout all three different versions of the one story the depictions of the Oompa Loompas skin color changes, but the power dynamics between Willy Wonka, owner, and the Oompa Loompa stays the same and that confirms that they are slave workers especially within the 1964 book. The different classes had different cuisine and past times as well, with the higher class being more European in nature. Travel was an interesting affair in America, with the land s rather extreme weather and the limited forms of transportation. Life in Colonial America, and specifically Salem, was significantly different to that experienced in England due to the difference in lodging, occupations, social groups, leisure, and environment. Since there was less of a social divide between the colonist when they settled, most of the time the poor and rich lived right next to each other, with no distinct neighborhoods. This led to a slight reconciliation between the classes, drawing them together. The people were still aware of the status of the elite, but they were no longer physically separated as they were in England. • 44. Change In Film Film, being both visual and audible, has become a power source of art throughout its development. In many cases, films are used as a way to promote social change. The 2000 X Men film can be seen as a cry for equality. A supernatural film about mutants versus humans sends an underlying message about how people may not feel accepted or like they fit in just because they don t conform to society. During the mid 1950s and early 1960s movies were used to express the desire to break free, as a people, from the ideals of perfection and gender norms as America underwent a huge social change that quickly became known as The Sexual Revolution. • 45. A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw Essay A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is an odd story about a young woman who, leaving her small country home for the first time, takes a job as a governess in a wealthy household. Shortly after her arrival, she begins to suffer from insomnia and fancies that she sees ghosts roaming about the grounds. James is a master story teller and, at times, the complexities of the story make it difficult to follow. The Turn of the Screw is a story within a story, the tale of the governess being read aloud as a ghost story among friends. Harold C. Goddard wrote a fascinating piece of criticism entitled A Pre Freudian Reading of The Turn of the Screw. When applied to the book, his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is very excited at this point and one might infer that she is infatuated with her employer. However, all her hopes of a relationship are unrealistic, as there is a vast difference in class between herself and the man from Harley Street. At the end of her interview, after she agreed to these stipulations, we are told that when ...he held her hand, thanking her for the sacrifice, she already felt rewarded (6). This description proves that the new governess is in love with her employer. Later in the book, during her first encounter with the ghost of Peter Quint, it is clear that she is thinking of her love as she says that her first shock at seeing a man in the tower was that it was not the person [she] had precipitately supposed it would be (15). It is clear that she was hoping it would be the man from Harley Street. According to Goddard s theory, the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are images conjured up in the mind of the unstable, young governess. Goddard addresses this issue accordingly. To the reader, this may seem like a strange notion because the governess is able to give a description of the ghosts that seems eerily accurate, even though she never saw them before. • 50. The Effects Of Nickel On Ash Toxicity Several metals have been tested for their role in fly ash toxicity. Although universally high toxicity has been attributed to vanadium [Bhatnagar, 2004 and Liu et al., 2005], nickel is generally not far behind [Salnikow et al., 2004 and Kurowska Bal, 2010]. Nickel is a primary contributor to the inhalation cancer risk because of its relative high concentration in fly ash and the known carcinogenic potency of its sub sulfide forms (Ni3S2) [Dreher et al., 1997]. Huang et al. (2015) suggest, that oil fly ash surface metals (like vanadium) may be the key determinants in the induction and/or amplification of allergic responses. The metal fraction of oil ashes has been shown, in both in vivo and in vitro studies, to increase lung injury and cytotoxicity (Dreher et al., 1997; Dye et al., 1999; Gavett et al., 1997; Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase lung inflammation (Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase airway reactivity (Gavett et al., 1997; Lambert et al., 2000), alter cytokine production (Dye et al., 1999; Carter et al., 1997), and increase oxidative stress (Ghio et al., 2002b; Kim et al., 2003; Lewis et al., 2003) Kadiiska et al. (1997) reported that the vanadium, nickel and iron in oil ashes produced a significant influx of neutrophils and proteins indicative of acute inflammation, and significant increases in the formation of free radicals in rates. Vanadium may play the most significant role in the inflammatory response produced by oil ash. Dreher et ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Why Is Socrates My Teacher Socrates was the first Athenian philosopher and he is very interesting figure, not only of his teaching methods, but also of his whole life and way of thinking. In the centre of Socrates philosophy is human being but, first of all, he sees a human as moral being. According to Socrates, learning process is closely connected with relations which will be build between the teacher and a student and he as a teacher should give to the student all accumulated experience of previous older generations. I want to have Socrates as my teacher, because of the fact that, all his philosophy and teaching methods are relevant and important nowadays too, even if he was living in Ancient Greece many years ago. Unfortunately, today many of us forget about the main aims and principles of life which every of us had studied in elementary school, such as moral self improvement and as it known, Socrates was one of the founders of the doctrine of human kindness, about which our ... He means by this phrase, that we must question all what we taught, understand or already know, the doubts is the background of wisdom and for one hundred percent we can know only that we know nothing, so we need to question everything. Furthermore, Socrates as philosopher is famous for his work on logic and epistemology. Epistemology is a part of philosophy about the nature of knowledge and explains what knowledge exactly is. In addition in today s world people deviate from the norms of morality and forget about kindness, honesty, tolerance, all are just trying to survive in cruelty and all think only about themselves.
