Still Culture In Still Life
Still life, a distinct genre and professional specialization, developed as a separate category in the late
sixteenth century. It gave the artists more freedom in the arrangement of elements within a
composition than other types of genres such as landscape or portraiture. A style of ostentatious still life
painting emerged in the Netherlands and prominent artists, like Willem Claesz Heda, emphasized the
abundance by depicting a diversity of objects, fruits, flowers and dead game, often together with
animals. This still life reminded viewers of the prosperity of the Republic; it spoke about the bounty of
God s creation and the nature of art and life. At first sight, Heda s painting, Still Life with a Gilt Cup
(1635) appears to welcome the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Today, food is seen as a necessary part of life, with no need of the luxury, although the opulent
cuisines are famous too. Food in Netherlands shapes and is constantly shaped by the Dutch society.
The country s cuisine has been established by its cultivation (fishing, farming, domesticating animals)
and the history of Netherlands. In the prosperous Dutch Golden Age, when the urban merchant class
dominated the affluent Dutch society, the haute cuisine was largely limited to the aristocracy and
wealthy citizens, consisting of a rich variety of fruits, cheeses, meat, seafood, wine and nuts. The
Dutch empire enabled spices, sugar and exotic fruits as well as tea and coffee to be imported to the
country. Exotic ingredients such as dates, rice, cinnamon, ginger and saffron were gradually
introduced. Thus, today, Netherlands is home to different cultures and external influences, having a
variety of foods. Chinese Indonesian, Surinamese, French and Italian food are a part of the Dutch diet.
From piping hot street snacks to heart warming stews, pea soups to french fries with mayonnaise,
meat croquets to raw herrings, freshly baked breads to delicious cheeses and from Belgium waffles to
pies filled with spiced apples, the Dutch cuisine is celebrated with special

Capital Punishment During The Colonial Era
The public opinion within the United States on capital punishment has fluctuated since its early
establishment during the colonial era. The debate about the use of capital punishment has been shaped
by factors such as class, gender, age but most importantly race.
During the colonial era, Britain was the biggest influence on America when it came to utilizing the
death penalty. The death penalty was used for minor offenses such as stealing, killing animals, and
trading with Indians. As the late 1700s approached, a movement towards abolishing the death penalty
began. Beccaria wrote an essay in 1767 called Crimes and Punishment, that had a significant impact
on the world s opinion towards the death penalty (Bohm,1999). Beccaria suggested ... Show more

Zimring began to research executions by different regions in the United States and noted the
similarities between historical lynching trends and current patterns in the use of Capital punishment
(Gabbidon and Greene). Throughout the research Zimring conducted, he noticed that there was a
strong correlation between legal lynchings and death penalty executions after lynching were made
illegal. The data indicated through 1889 to 1918 that 88 percent of lynchings were carried out in the
South. In comparison, through 1977 to 2000 81 percent of executions were held in the South
(Gabbidon and Greene). In conclusion, Zimring believed that the death penalty is a racialized system
that has replaced lynchings. This created a renaissance of capital punishment between the 1920s and
1940s. During the 1930s, there was an average of 167 executions each year. These annual numbers
were similar to the number of lynchings recorded in the 1890s (Vandiver, Giacopassi, Lofquist, 2006).
After this era, the support for death penalty began to slowly decline, as 42% of people showed support
for the death penalty in the 1950s (Bohm,1999).
Following the decline in the support of the death penalty, a moratorium on executions began in 1972
during the case Furman v. Georgia. Furman argued that the death penalty was arbitrary and violated
the constitution (Mallicoat and Brown 255 280). In a five to four vote, the Supreme Court

The Compulsive Disorder Of Leonardo Dicaprio s OCD )
Leonardo DiCaprio s OCD
I ll never let go, Jack. I promise. One of the greatest movies of all time stars the best actor ever,
Leonardo DiCaprio. He has obsessive compulsive disorder, but is still one of the greatest actors. If
something was hard, he worked even harder to do it perfectly. Even if his disorder disrupted him and
his fellow co workers, he worked through those difficult times to get the job done. Obsessive
compulsive disorder, also known as OCD, is an anxiety disorder which involves obsessions,
compulsions, and can also consume a person s everyday life (Steketee 1). Compulsions are obsessions
performed into ritualistic behaviors (Parks 11). They can lead a person to have very vicious cycles in
which they are powerless to stop. Obsessions most of the time revolves around fears of germs in
which they avoid using public toilets and touching items. This can get so extreme to where they will
wash their hands so many times their skin will be raw, and they will shower so much their bodies will
start bleeding or chapping (12). There are many symptoms of having OCD. For example, sufferers can
avoid situations that involve obsessions, overestimating harm, and worrying excessively. Sufferers of
OCD can have multiple fears such as hurting loved ones, using sharp objects near people, not counting
high enough which would cause a natural disaster, and throwing items away (12).

How Does Achilles Show Honor In The Iliad
In Homer s epic, Iliad, Achilles is one of the main figures of the Trojan War. Achilles beliefs that he
defines throughout the passage are influenced by the manipulations of war that he encounters, along
with a focus on what the idea of glory entails and the effects that it has on one s honor. They are two
separate concepts, he recognizes, and during the Trojan War he knew that he could not have both. In
the selected passage from Book Nine, it is clear that Achilles, the Greek warrior, questions and
reevaluates the idea of honor and glory, as he believes honor and glory are inherently incompatible,
thus causing him to sacrifice one in order to have the other. This reevaluation emphasizes the
abnormal attitude from a once fierce warrior and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Angry and calling Agamemnon a hypocrite, he states, I hate it like I hate hell / the man who says one
thing and think another (168). Strategically beginning his soliloquy with a hostile accusation sets the
tone for the rest of the speech. This tone and structure is harsh, hyperbolic, and jumps between the two
arguments from which he bases his response: He cheated me, wronged me. Never again (170),
Achilles declares, focusing on the loss of honor and placing blame on Agamemnon. Just 29 lines after,
however, Achilles switches his focus to the other reason for leaving. Nothing is worth my life, not all
the riches / they say Troy held before the Greeks came... (171). This quick shift of focus is similar to a
rant going back and forth between arguments. His mind is not balancing on one thought, but rather
driven by emotions and rhetorical questions. For example, he brings up, why do the Greeks have to
fight the Trojans? Why did Agamemnon lead the army to Troy if not for the sake of fair haired Helen?
And now he thinks he s going to win me back? (169). This tone and these rhetorical questions serve to
exaggerate and humanize the argument. Achilles can only deal with so much he is only human, after
all, and must be treated like one. He is not Agamemnon s war puppet. The meaning and purpose for
Achilles rant is not muddled in the harsh and edgy speech; it is simply shown in various ways. He will
not fight for Agamemnon and is making it

Why School Start Times For Students Essay
Many young students, from the U.S. and abroad, have to wake up at an earlier time in order to get to
school. What many of them do not realize however is the effects it can have on their body s
development. Sleep is seen as unnecessary or even pointless to many young children, but as they get
older, their appreciation for the act becomes widely apparent. Lots of educational systems all over the
country still start school at a time earlier than 8 o clock in the morning. The developing students who
have to wake up at such an early time don t realize that they shouldn t have to wake up so early in the
morning, and that is because their bodies simply don t function properly at a certain time and with a
lack of sleep. I believe that school start times for students that are in primary and secondary school
should start later because doing so will have a positive effect on their overall physical health as well as
their psychosocial development. School start times play a very big role in a student s overall
development, especially when they aren t getting enough sleep because of it. An important factor to
consider for a student s development is the act of sleeping; that a lack of it can cause serious problems
to the students growing body. According to research done with Brown University s Julie Boergers, the
author of the letter Benefits of later school start times , the amount of sleep that adolescents need
ranges from 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep. Only 17 percent of these students

Blackrock Play Essay
The first of two plays that has been considered for selection in upcoming International Theatre for
Young People s Festival soon to be held in Vancouver, Canada is Blackrock by the late Nick Enright.
The plays must represent the values, attitudes and beliefs of today s Australian Youth Culture.
Blackrock explores the strength of mateship, the importance of image and the dangers of peer
pressure, parties and underage drinking. The second play is the popular Blurred by the playwright
Stephen Davis; which offers a comedic and clever representation of perhaps the most famous
Australian youth orientated rite of passage, Schoolies . Both of these plays portray representations of

Now you get in the van. Your turn to look after me. (P56 7) This illustrates not only what type of
character Ricko is but also the way in which he interacts with other characters in Blackrock. He uses
foul language such as: You are, man, you fucken are (p57) The language used in Blackrock depicts the
Surfie sub culture that resides within Australian Youth Culture. A prime example of how Enright has
utilized language to appeal to the targeted group, teens, was one of Toby s initial lines. Toby is a close
friend of Jared and also sister of Jared s girlfriend Rachel: I ll put on a keg show down the surf club

something generic of the western world. Unfortunately inherit of teenage rebellion is anti social

is apparent that the teenage characters in this play, are excessively disrespectful of their parents: Diane

with audiences uses colloquialism and refers to things that aren t widely apparent internationally, only

Advantage Of Competitive Advantage
1. Introduction 1.1. Introduction to firm s competitive advantage Strategy is concerned with matching
a firm s resources and capabilities to the opportunities that arise in the external environment. (Grant, p.
114, 2016). In basic sense, a firm is a place where a product or service originates. A firm is a place
where a group of people co operate and co ordinate with each other to frame a product or services as
per the taste of the customers to reach the organizational goal of profitability. There is mixture of a lot
stakeholders like, suppliers, customers, manufacturers, distributers, etc. in a firm. A firm is a legal
entity one that signs contracts with its suppliers, distributors, employees and often customers.
(Chandler, 1992). Competitive advantage is a very general but genuine term in the present business
market. The business market is very competitive. One has to be very unique as well as customer
satisfying in order to sustain in the market for the long run. A competitive advantage is an advantage
gained over competitors by offering customers greater value, either through lower prices or by
providing additional benefits and service that justify similar, or possibly higher, prices (Ehmke, 2008).
(Porter, 2008) Competitive Advantage introduces the concept of the value chain, a general framework
for thinking strategically about the activities involved in any business and assessing their relative cost
and role in differentiation. It can be in various aspects of

Human-Made Boundaries Of Geopolitical Communities
Communities may be categorized as geopolitical (spatial) or phenomenological (communities of
belonging) (Maurer Smith, 2013). Geopolitical communities are formed by either natural or human
made boundaries. A river, a mountain range, or a valley may create a natural boundary; for example,
the Chesapeake Bay separates Maryland into the eastern and western shores. Human made boundaries
may be structural, political, or legal. Streets, bridges, or railroad tracks may create structural
boundaries. City, county, or state lines create legal boundaries. Political boundaries may be
exemplified by congressional districts or school districts. (Maurer 395)

order to effective plan and implement programs at a community level, the community/public health
nurse needs to recognize how the community works, how it is prepared and structure, to know and

are the programs were been introduced in the past (Maurer, Smith, 2013). The nurse needs to identify
things that are common with various communities and how it can be used to make the necessary

Song Of Solomon Short Story
The sun had long since receded pasted the hills and the moon, tried as it might, could not poke through
the thick storm clouds. But that did not stop these men from congregating, not the powerful winds, the
beating rain, nor the sky splitting lightening. Their cathedral was calling to them, the old run down
barn in the middle of an abandoned field. From the barn just under the drumming rain, you could hear
the stomping of feet. Just under the howling winds, an orchestra of screams, choruses of curses ring.
And just under the crashing of thunder, the sounds of bone meeting flesh beats. The pit sits in the barn,
the pit is where the shouts, cries and curses are being flung, and the pit is where the champ mud

Hurricane Sandy Essay
HURRICANE SANDY Hurricane Sandy was a tropical cyclone that devastated portions of the
Caribbean, Mid Atlantic and Northeastern United States in late October 2012. The eighteenth named
storm and tenth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Sandy was the largest Atlantic
hurricane on record, as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles. Sandy is estimated in
early calculations to have caused damage of at least $20 billion. Preliminary estimates of losses that
include business interruption surpass $50 billion, which, if confirmed, would make it the second
costliest Atlantic hurricane in history, behind only Hurricane Katrina. Sandy developed from a tropical

In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected at least 24 states, from Florida to Maine and west to
Michigan and Wisconsin, with particularly severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Its storm
surge hit New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power
in and around the city. It is having various political effects in the United States especially in terms of
the general election scheduled for November 6, 2012. Hurricane Sandy developed at 1500 UTC on
October 22, when the National Hurricane Center initiated advisories on Tropical Depression Eighteen
to the south of Kingston, Jamaica. The system developed from an area of low pressure and had
organized convection. It moved slowly at first due to a ridge to the north. Low wind shear and warm
waters allowed for strengthening, and the system became Tropical Storm Sandy late on October 22.
Early on October 24, an eye began developing, and it was moving steadily northward due to an
approaching trough. Later that day, the NHC upgraded Sandy to hurricane status about 65 mi south of
Kingston, Jamaica. At about 1900 UTC that day, Sandy made landfall near Kingston with winds of
about 80 mph. Just offshore Cuba, Sandy rapidly intensified to winds of 110 mph, and at that intensity
it made landfall just west of Santiago de Cuba at 0525 UTC on October 25. After Sandy exited Cuba,
the structure became disorganized, and it turned to the north northwest over the Bahamas. By October

College Station Area Is The Huge Inconvenience Of The...
One of the more dominant problems within the Bryan, College Station area, is the extensive amount of
flooding that takes place every year. Whenever it rains, the town and a large number of major areas
gets engulfed by uncontrollable amounts of water. The streets and roadways get backed up with so
much excess water that they must close off certain parts of town to ensure the safety of the people who
live there. Flooding in Bryan, College Station is an enormous inconvenience to the people who live
there. This issue can be solved by simply collecting more tax money, fixing the drainage system, and
by coming up with procedures or regulations for future constructions, so people can build their new
establishments on higher grounds. It has been stated by the Weather Channel that, In June of 2016, the
Brazos River crested just over 4 feet above its previous record flood stage at Richmond, Texas (Tom
Moore). Beings that Collage Station is located in a Bryan Valley, the area is mostly flat terrain with
occasional hills and slow absorbing soil, packed with large amounts of establishments that can easily
become prone to flooding. During the times of intense rain, the water builds up and exceeds the limit
for drainage in the area. Bridges, roads, walkways, and parking lots, get engulfed with the water,
making it impossible to get through. Highway 6, near College Station, is one of the major roads that
people use to commute from place to place, and to get home, when it closed down to

Reflection Essay On Observation
To obtain knowledge, one must study; but to receive wisdom, one must observe. Observation, often
defined as the action or process of watching something or someone to gain information. Throughout
the semester, students within the education department had the genuine opportunity to both learn and
grow as future educators through observations outside of the classroom. Throughout the semester, I
chose to observe at the following programs: Breakaway at Westridge Church, Poole Elementary
School s Learning Bridge, and AWANA at Callie Harbin Baptist Church. As a future educator, I
learned that often observation is education as education and learning are so much more than a
textbook. For my first observation, I chose to observe at a respite event known as Breakaway at
Westridge Church located in Dallas Georgia. Breakaway is a cost free respite event for both special
needs participants and their families. This function allows individuals of all ages to enjoy supervised
entertainment and activities planned precisely for them. Breakaway, Outdoor Extravaganza, an event
consisting of carnival clowns, games, outdoor inflatables, corn hole, hayrides, arts, crafts, face
painting, petting zoo, music, and so much more. Through this observation, I had the genuine
opportunity to view life from different perspectives as special needs individuals enjoyed a day
prepared explicitly for them. For example, I had the opportunity to share such a joyous day with an
individual who holds my heart captive. I sat back and watched as he rode the hayride with his
volunteer; consequently, my heart filled with joy as he laughed the whole way through. Once the
hayride came to a close, he and his volunteer traveled to visit the fire trucks and see all of its bells and
whistles as he had the chance to climb inside. In addition to all the excellent outdoor activities, each
child had a chance to hang out, listen to music, see ballet dancers perform, and hear the word of God
brought forth through interactive Bible stories. This experience overjoyed my heart as I saw firsthand
that children with special needs paint the world with beautiful colors every day as they love more
profound than one s mind can fathom. For my second

Search Theory, Linear And Random Walk Moving Target On The...
Abstract. This paper presents the cooperation between two searchers at the origin to seek for a random
walk moving target on the line. Any information of the target position is not available to the searchers
all the time. Rather than finding the conditions that make the expected value of the first meeting time
between one of the searchers and the target is finite, we show the existence of the optimal search
strategy which minimizes this first meeting time. The effectiveness of this model is illustrated using
numerical example.

the first meeting time between one of the searchers and the target is finite. Furthermore, they showed
the existence of the optimal search plan that minimizes the expected value of the first meeting time
and found it. More recently, El Hadidy [16] considered a search problem for a d dimensional
Brownian target that moves randomly on d space. He found the conditions that make the expected

Kelly Outbreak Analysis
The Kelly outbreak is a famous phenomenon in Australia s colonial history. Whilst some people prefer
to see the outbreak as a simple criminal incident between an outlaw and the police, most historians
view it as a broader sociological phenomenon, involving conflict between a larger rural community
and the colonial authorities. An important issue for historians has been to understand the underlying
causes of this criminal outbreak, whether it was mainly due to personal, ethnic or socio economic
factors. This essay will critically examine each of these explanations and argue that the actions of the
Kellys and their supporters, and the reactions of the police can best be understood in terms of broad
socio economic developments in rural Victoria at the time. In his article, Ned Kelly s Sympathisers,
Doug Morrissey suggests that Kelly s Irish heritage was largely responsible for the Kelly outbreak 1.
To support his claim, he points to the intense emotional relationships in the Quinn/Kelly clan and the
high percentage of Irish sympathisers among Ned s supporters 2. Ned Kelly was clearly imbued with a
sense of his Irish heritage, but the evidence does not suggest that this was a major contributing factor
in the outbreak. Public sympathy, it seemed, crossed social and ethnic barriers 3 and was quite
widespread, especially after the Euroa National Bank robbery, where the efficiency, lack of violence
and manner of the gang were well noted 4. Furthermore, Ned once stated that he

country has built a strong and fascinating appeal for both local and international tourists. Tourism
sector, therefore, is of great importance to Malaysia s economy as one of the major foreign exchange

The tourism sector being a strong contributor is just not a new finding as its contribution has received
widespread recognition in the country. (The tourism destination conference for 2010) reveals that the
tourism receipt for 2009 was at RM 53.367.7 million, with 23.65 million tourist arrivals, making this
industry the second largest income earner for the country in the same year and though these figures are
laudable, it is said that the local tourism sector has not been exploited to its potential (Y.B. Dato Sri
Mohd Najib, 3rd March 2010). In 2009, Malaysia made it into top 10 most visited countries in the
world, and was confidently placed in the 9th position below turkey and Germany. This remark shows
that Malaysia s tourism sector has pulled international recognition and has gained force of attraction
that draws the attention of tourists all around the continents of the world to choose Malaysia as their
tourism destination.
Social impact of the tourism industry
The social impact of tourism in Malaysia is indelible and will sustain a world record in the nearest
future. In a country with a diverse nationality, diverse race, culture and religion, it has proven to me
that understanding, tolerance and acceptance are part of the key values that is keeping Malaysia at the
top among the top tourist destination countries in the world today. The masterminds behind the

Greek gods share the same vices as humans, proving themselves to be as fallible as mortals are. For
example, the gods often argue with each other. Like the one happened in book one where Zeus and

the process of its development. Based on the feedback of the customer and the staff, the main problem
for this business is the downgrade quality of customer service. This essay aims to investigate and
search for solutions for this problem. It begins by the causes of this problem and then critically
examines the solutions which could be divided into two parts: staff motivation and operations
management. Finally, some recommendations could be provided for this enterprise.
2. Causes for Blossoms Recession
There are two causes for the downturn of Blossoms service quality: financial pressure and ineffective
management.

Brutus Is A Tragic Hero And A Sympathetic Figure
Julius Caesar is a play about people who make mistakes costly ones, for themselves and their country
(Julius Caesar, Introduction line 1). This quote is from the first line of the introduction to the play of
Julius Caesar and I think that this line is the best way to start off this essay. If we took a look at each
main character in this play, except for Antony, we can see how their mistakes usually would lead to
their downfalls. For example, Caesar mistake of not listening to the warnings, the omens, or even his
wife telling him to stay home because she had a nightmare about him, led to his death at the Senate.
Another example would be Cassius. His mistake of listening to Brutus when it came to marching
down to Philippi to face Antony and Octavius s army led to the defeat of his army and Cassius
committing suicide. Now we come to the main focus of this essay which is Brutus. Some people argue
that Brutus is a tragic hero and a sympathetic figure. Others argue the opposite. I believe that Brutus
noble qualities led to his ignoble downfall which included failure, loss, and shame. While we read
through this play we can see many examples of Brutus failures. Different occasions where he was
manipulated by people he called his friends, Brutus being too trusting of others, and his sense of honor
blocking his common sense. It s safe to say that he is simple minded and in a way a coward. In this
essay I am going to first do an inspection of Brutus, a breakdown his

The effect of constant dose of sevin (3.0mg / KgBW) on whole and five different parts of rat brain
AChE (2a) and NOS (2b) at various time post injection
DISCUSSION
The analyses demonstrated extensive contrast in ChE and NOS activities in the different parts of rat
brain. The most astounding action was distinguished in the brain stem and cerebellum, bring down in
basal ganglia and the least in the frontal cortex. The high NOS activity in the cerebellum is in
concurrence with the outcomes portrayed by other authors.(13,14,15,16) In the present work, the i.p
infusion of various dosages of the carbamate sevin brought about the inhibition of both ChE and NOS.
Moreover past reviews demonstrated that the organochlorine and organophosphorus mixes attributable
to their lipophilic nature, tie to the hydrophobic area of CaM and in this way impede CaM subordinate
NOS activities like Ca2+ATPase phosphodiestrase.(16)
The present work demonstrated that the restraint of ChE and NOS activities expanded with expanding
the concentrations of sevin i.e. dosage reliance. The

Custer Hospital Case Study
I choose the Custer Hospital scenario. After careful consideration of all the facts and possible issues
that maybe encountered, my overall recommendation was for the board and Ms. Wilson was to go
ahead with the planning of the three recommendations. Before I went any further with my
recommendation I had to be sure that the community was in actual need for the new outpatient center.
This was a huge step to take because not only did the hospital have any data on the outpatient canters
already, it did not have data not the surrounding community as well. To get over this hurdle the very
first thing that needed to be done was to do a theory based community assessment. This would not
only figure out the surrounding populations that use the clinics but it would also help figure out what
health behaviors were most relevant to the outpatient centers. Plus with the money coming ... Show

Recovery and Reinvestment Act says that all providers either being public or private that accept

Physicians, 2016) Meaning that if the hospitals do not have physicians that are on call show up in a

the hospital can be in fault and be in violation of the EMTALA, which has penalties up to 50,000 per

The Conflict Between Israel and Palestine Essay examples
The conflict between Israel and Palestine has tight roots in history, stretching thousands of years back
to when the Israelites first forged their way into the land, then known as Canaan. It came to its peak in
1948, the year Israel declared its independence (Beinin). Ever since then, the volatile area of Palestine
has become a battle ground for war, terrorism, and politics. The two nations have attempted to make
agreements, but so far, none of them have succeeded in creating long lasting peace. Since it is unlikely
that neither Israel nor Palestine would completely give up their land to the other nation, a compromise
needs to be forged between the two. The conflict between Israel and Palestine cannot stop unless

These restrictions have not completely closed off trade into Gaza, however. With heavy border control
on the surface, traders have turned to smuggling goods through subterranean tunnels that burrow into
Egypt. It is estimated that around 15,000 jobs are found in the tunnels, smuggling anything from
weapons and cement, to food and cigarettes. These jobs are very much high risk, however, with cave
ins increasingly common. (Myre) If Israel dropped their blockade and opened up more trading
opportunities for the people of Gaza, there would be a significant decrease in accidents in these
smuggling tunnels, and their economy would be better off. Above all else, it would express to the
Palestinians of Gaza that Israel was prepared to trust them. The second step in ending this violent
conflict in the Middle East is for Israel to lift their occupation and settlement on the Gaza Strip and the
West Bank. If Palestinians and Israelis had settled for the terms outlined in the original United Nations
partition plan in 1947, history might have taken a very different path. This plan would have split the
land into two different states, an Arab state, and an Israeli state. Jerusalem and Bethlehem, for their
religious significance to many cultures, would have become international regions. (Beinin) Due to the

Summary of Balanced Scorecard
Using the Balanced Scorecard as a Strategic Management System
Kaplan, Robert S., Norton, David P.
Harvard Business Review; Jan/Feb1996, Vol. 74 Issue 1, p75 85, 11p, 3 Diagrams
Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton introduced the balanced scorecard, which supplemented
traditional financial measures with criteria that measured performance from the perspectives of
customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth. The scorecard enabled companies to
track financial results while monitoring progress in building the capabilities they would need for
growth.

This paper investigates whether the book entitled The Balanced Scorecard has the features
characteristic of sound argumentation, i.e. whether it uses an appropriate combination of ethos, logo s
and pathos when appealing to its readers; if it does not, it will be further examined which features

turn, to tell how the BSC is promoted.
All the author s analysis shows that rhetoric is a key management tool. Management constantly
requires new rhetoric. The only problem is that, if the rhetoric is combined with theory that is full of
mistakes, the sources of errors are numerous. In that case, the managers cannot use the theories to

Nighthawks By Edward Hopper Meaning
Nighthawks
It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Similarly, through careful analysis of a work
of art it is possible for one to more deeply understand the ideas that the artist is attempting to express.
At first glance, Edward Hopper s painting Nighthawks may just appear to be a painting of a normal
diner. However, it is only through careful analysis that it is possible to see that the painting actually
excels in creating a feeling of darkness, while at the same time portraying the feelings of both desire
and mystery in the viewer.
After looking at the painting, it is possible to conclude that the artist is trying to portray a feeling a
desire through his work. Evidence that supports this observation can be found ... Show more content

sitting farther away than everyone. This begs the question of why the lone man would not want to be

facial features visible to us like the rest of the people in the painting. This gives us no indication of
emotion that we can use to try and figure out how the lone man is feeling, which only strengthens the
sense of mystery that he gives the viewer. The arms of the lone man are also not visible on the counter
in front of him, suggesting that his hands may be cupped in front of his face in deep contemplation.
Consequently, this leads the reader to wonder what he is contemplating, adding to the sense of

I Love Triangles Essay
While I am happy that she feels comfortable with me, I also feel awkward since I believe my mother
wants me to side with her whenever she makes difficult decisions concerning her relationships. Due to
the fact that she is my mother, I would support her no matter what decisions she makes concerning her
relationships. However, knowing details about her relationships is uncomfortable for me and often I
wish she would not share so much with me. Also, because she does share quite a bit with me,
sometimes I fear that my siblings are jealous of the coalition that has formed. My sisters will

that they feel hurt my mother does not share with them. Triangles As discussed previously, members

William Dunbar along with Robert Henryson are two well known, popular medieval poets who both
are said to be influenced by Geoffrey Chaucer , a Middle Ages poet who wrote much of the great

his poems around religion and courtly love (two common themes of medieval poetry) and wrote many
popular poems such as The Dance Of The Seven Deadly Sins and The Tretis of the Twa Mariit Wemen

Secular marriages were not blessed by the church and were more popular amongst the poorer people
as there was no expensive ceremony with rings. This type of marriage made it easier for divorce and
to remarry. In the poem, Dunbar uses a male narrator who is a voyeur eavesdropping into a
conversation amongst three, intoxicated woman who are in a garden on Midsummer night s eve; two
of them married and one a widow. In this conversation they discuss their husbands in an unpleasant
way and discuss their sexual desires which at this time was unheard of to males as they classified
woman as belongings and inferior. This poem is an attempt by Dunbar to get inside the head of a
woman which was a common thought amongst men as some were worried woman were
untrustworthy. The setting of this poem plays an important, although discreet role as Midsummer Eve
is associated with fertility rites back in pre Christian times and the garden they are in would have been
filled with sweet scents from the flowers blooming at that time of year, so the setting is almost a
metaphor for the woman and their duty to provide children and fertility.
The poem begins with the voyeur telling his audience about the three women and how he is hiding and
listening in to their personal conversation. To a modern audience this seems odd and disturbing but

Millions of taxpayer dollars are being spend on mobile campaigns, advertisements, and media
exposure. This funding could easily go towards other areas of society, benefiting the very people that
the candidates wish to govern. Rather than directing negative attention, I believe that candidates
should reach out to the public to gain support. Campaigning for presidency should not be about

Symbolism In Richard Cory, By Edwin Arlington Robinson
Edwin Arlington Robinson was born in the village of Head Tide in the town of Alna, Maine, on
December 22, 1869, third son of Edward and Mary Elizabeth Robinson. He described his childhood in
Maine as stark and unhappy . His parents had wanted a girl, and did not name him until he was six
months old. When they vacationed for a holiday there a woman drew a name from a hat and chose
Edwin He hated the family s habit of calling him Win, and as an adult he always signed himself as E.
A. The speaker of Richard Cory uses symbols, imagery, and wordplay.
In the poem Richard Cory, the author describes the townspeople watching him as the people on the
pavement. This creates the assumption that they all admire Richard Cory for an unknown reason. As
the poem continues, he is described as a gentleman from sole to crown as if he was looked upon as
royalty. He s separated from the speaker by his wealth, his manners, and fashion. These traits make his
death at the end all the more shocking. As a reader, we are left with the realization that speaker at the
end of the poem didn t truly want to be like Cory at all. He was unhappy and people who idolized him
much prefered working for life rather than be happy and have it all. He was also a man who had
everything but had nothing all at once. Adored by many, but was loved by nobody. Robinson s writing
with his use of imagery and ironic language, gives the reader a sense of how Cory s life was
scrutinized by people who did not know him and was ultimately responsible for his death. In usual
poems the speaker is in the story itself but instead the speaker tells the story as a viewer because the
speaker did not know Cory personally. It seemed that the speaker forgot about his own life when he
observed Richard Cory s but the speaker is unaware of the suffering that lead to his suicide. Cory must
have realized that the public thought he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place .
Through this use of wordplay, the poem suggests that Cory was forced to act in an unquestionable way
because the public put him on a pedestal. He could never let his guard down he was constantly
surrounded by fanatics that expected him to act and behave like a man

Toys And Gender Stereotypes
Compartmentalization is a process that begins before a person even takes their first breath in this
world. The color of their room is picked out based upon gender as is their clothes, toys, and name all
before they are born. Girls get girl names, girl toys, and other girly things so that they know what
gender they are, as if it was a hard thing to figure out. The same thing occurs with boys but young
ladies are the ones being held back from aspiring to do big things or really anything other than
cooking and being a mom. This issue is largely due to compartmentalization being that our entire lives
are predetermined by society based on our gender and while many break free from the stereotypes it is
much harder to do so when your entire community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fashion doll Barbie came into the lives of children everywhere in America in 1959 when the toy
company Mattel Inc. began producing them on a mass scale. These toys would create a huge gender

later they gave Barbie many versatile roles to inspire girls to be much more than pretty. Pleasant
Company later came out with American Girl in 1986 which were different from Barbie and typically
came with a book. The books usually captured the past in a romanticized manor and but also had some
very empowering messages for girls which was a step in the right direction. Then Bratz in 2001 made

by Karniol, Stuemler Cohen, and Lahav Gur (2012) suggest that girls gender role orientations have an
impact on which doll they prefer. The study they conducted pertained only to younger girls who
explained their preference as to why they might choose a Bratz doll over a Barbie doll or why they
might not even have a preference at all and how their perception of gender coincides with their
choices. Bratz were marketed to teens, or dolls for tweens, which appealed largely to older girl on
their way to becoming teens. In their research they look at feminine versus masculine traits in the dolls
and incorporate how the girls might associate those traits with the dolls they state that, Feminine girls,
who are more gender stereotyped, would be expected to indicate greater liking of Barbie, which is
more stereotypical in her clothing, coloring, and appearance. (Karniol et al., 2012, p.889). Karinol

Case Study #3: L.L. Bean
Question 1: How does L.L. Bean use past demand data and a specific item forecast to decide how
many units of that item to stock?
L.L. Bean uses several different calculations in order to determine the number of units of a particular
item it should stock, whether it is a new item or a never out item. The first piece of data that is
required is a point forecast for the item in the future period. This comes from the forecasting
department, and is based off of the book forecast and past demand data. For a new item, there is a lot

They first need to know what the cost is to make an item. They also need to know the selling price of
the item. From these two pieces of data, they can then calculate the profit generated from each
individual item (profit = selling price cost of item). The third piece of data they need is the price if
they item becomes liquidated. Thus, they can calculate the loss of an individual item if it becomes
liquidated. Using these calculations, they can use the methods mentioned in Question #1 to make a
decision of how many units of a particular item to stock.
Essentially, we need to compare the costs associated with understocking and overstocking inventory.
The costs of understocking, as mentioned above, not only includes short terms losses like the loss of
the sale for that item at that time, but also include loss of future business due to customer
dissatisfaction. We must also consider that if a particular item is not in stock, the entire purchase
orders may be cancelled as per the terms and conditions not being met. The costs of overstocking
include the cost to hold that inventory but we also need to consider that it might change if the salvage
value of a product leftover depends on the number of units remaining at the end of the season. If we
have a lot of product leftover, then the liquidation value might be a lot less. We have to take all these
factors into consideration when making the decision of how many

Physics Of Skiing Physics

The most common type of skiing is downhill skiing, or otherwise known as alpine skiing. The skier

Relationship Between Culture And Economic Incentives
In the following, I will argue that in order to understand change we need a concrete understanding of
the relationship between culture and economic incentives, not a set primacy of one over the other.
Change should ideally be explained by a synthesis in which both culture and economic incentives are
taken into account. It is not only about stating that there is a relationship but also about analysing how
that relationship works in terms of mechanisms.
section{Synthesis in an Ontologically Divided Field?}
In this section, I will develop the scope for synthesis regarding culture and economic incentives in a
political economic analysis of change.

I claim that we need two levels of synthesis, one on the conceptual level, one on the ... Show more

According to this, the concept of incentives as economic incentives should be softened if we want to
understand its link to culture.

There are various types of incentives, not only material also intangible and expressive incentives
(cite[195]{leighley1995attitudes}). This may lead to ambiguous responses if they interact with
subjective feelings and desires.
Hence, if the model includes non material incentives like esteem or expressing one s identity, the
relationship between culture and economic incentives becomes a much closer one to analyse.

Expressive incentives have a theoretical significance, which shows that the rational choice
understanding of the human nature is incomplete (cite[195 197]{leighley1995attitudes}).
Behaviour in groups or societies is more complex. Norms condition decision making in groups.
Nonetheless, in addition to these cultural factors, the personal motivations and incentives for a certain
behaviour within societies need to be considered (cite[12]{laffont2009theory}). My aim is that if we
synthesise rational choice and cultural perspectives, more phenomena become explainable without
completely abandoning rational choice assumptions.

For example, citeauthor{chong2000rational} (citeyear{chong2000rational}) models a rational choice

Fortunato Revenge
The act of revenge means to avenge oneself or another by retaliating in kind or degree. Many people
seek revenge for a variety of different reasons. While some situations warrant vengeance, other times
it is unnecessary or goes too far. Every person is not the same, so it varies from person to person what
initiates the desire for revenge. In The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, Fortunato wrongs his
friend Montresor, the protagonist. Although what Fortunato does is unknown, Montresor seeks
extreme revenge. Montresor completely blindsides Fortunato with this pursuit of revenge as Fortunato
does not know he is in the wrong. One perceives by Montresor s actions towards Fortunato that his
exploitative behavior reveals his personal thirst ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Montresor first meets Fortunato at the carnival, Fortunato is already noticeably tipsy.
Morsberger states, To accomplish it, Montresor waits until carnival season, a time of supreme
madness, when Fortunato, already half drunk and costumed as a jester, is particularly vulnerable (1).
After convincing Fortunato to come back his vault, Montresor does not stop him from drinking.
Montresor continues to encourage Fortunato to drink more as they are walking through the catacombs.
This continues to happen as they approach the vault. Montresor encourages Fortunato by saying, But
first, another draught of the Medoc (Poe 53). Fortunato s drunkenness allows Montresor to manipulate
him easily as he has no indication of what is happening. Without being under the influence, Montresor
knows his task would be much more difficult. By getting him drunk, Montresor is able to get him to
do exactly what he wants. This makes the task of killing him almost effortless for Montresor. When
Fortunato goes to search for the stored wine, Montresor suddenly chains him and traps him to the wall.
In his article, Method to the Madness, Mcgrath explains, As the story unfolds, with growing unease
we begin to understand that it s on account of these slights, and the insult that follows them, that
Fortunato has been condemned, by Montresor, to be bricked up in the dank vaults of a crumbling
palazzo (2). Montresor taunts Fortunato and walls

A Summary Of The Bhagavad Gita
I have found the book The Bhagavad Gita to be very appealing. I have never been exposed to the
Indian culture but while reading this book it seems that they have similar beliefs than we do, just
quoted differently. Detachment was one of their practices I found interesting. Reasons to be detached
is greatly explained in this quote, Those who are compulsively attached to the results of action cannot
really enjoy what they do; they get downcast when things do not work out and cling more desperately
when they do (55). This quote is simply saying that we as a whole are not focused on what we should
be doing, we only focus on what we are doing to be perfect. If we act without worrying we may even
be able to enjoy ourselves instead. Even though detachment is practiced in the Indian culture,
everyone should practice it. In the religion I participate in, we tend to put value on everything. Some
people may not want to read the Gita or practice any of their practices due to the fact that it may not
be their religion. I feel that you should really view certain things without judging. I would consider
practicing detachment in order to help ease tension. When you are attached to someone or somethings,
anything can happen to it which cares you to feel a certain way. However, if you were practicing
detachment, you wouldn t really care if something happens to it. You also wouldn t be as hurt; this is
when you find yourself thinking everything happens for a reason. The saying everything

Spanish American War Benefits
The Spanish American War was the defining moment in modern U.S. history. It began the process by
which the U.S. would establish itself as a world super power . The Spanish American War was known
as the beginning process to the United States establishing itself as a world super power. This would be
the beginning to becoming a strong and powerful Empire. This process to building a powerful Empire
is something that America has built up for hundreds of years. This makes sense because America did
go through a lot before the war even started. All America wanted to do in the first place was build a
canal to connect North and South America for trade. The canal would make Americans life easier for
trading with other countries. Spain did not want ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cuba was finally free of Spain s control. With Cuba being free of Spain this is when America gets
their benefits. America basically tells Cuba Since we helped you get free of Spain s control, you will
let us build a canal, and that was only one of the benefits America used to get what they wanted with
Cuba. After the war there was a lot of things that needed to be talked about especially with where
Cuba was with being free and/or how was in control of it. These things were going to have to be
worked out with the governments. Other than that the Spanish American war was more about America
starting to gain control and power of an Empire that is still running today and what Americans hope
will keep running for a long time. If you do not look at the Spanish American war as the being of the
process of America gaining power then you probably think that the process could have already started.
For example like when monopolies were controlling America and when the citizens finally got a say
and decided to take down all of those monopolies. Or, you could possibly think that the process had
not started until World War 1 when America got involved and held there own against Germany and the
other countries involved in World War 1. For someone to think that the process of America becoming
an Empire had not started yet is not true is wrong in my opinion, seeing all that America has already
been through and how well it has been keeping up with the other

The Church Of The Christian Church
A major institution in my culture would be the Christian church. My grandmother is a Pastor at a
Christian church so this church is a part of my upbringing and cultural background. The Church makes
people follow certain rules called commandments. Breaking a commandment is called a sin. When
you sin in the Christian religion you are supposed to pray and repent and ask God for forgiveness. The
bible and all the preachers and pastors will tell you that praying for repentance will not clear what you
have done and that God will not give you certain blessings because you have sinned.
This institution of my culture functions similarly to the Azande and their witchcraft because they are
both used to control society. The Author also states on page five hundred fifty five that, Witchcraft is
thought to be an actual physical property residing inside some individuals, who may themselves be
unaware of their power. I relate this statement to some of the Christian pastors and Christian
churchgoers as well that get television shows because they claim that they met God in a dream or that
they died and saw and talked to God before the paramedics or doctor revived them. Another way of
similarity is that of how they control society with these institutions, the Christian church and the
Azande use the institutions for their followers to act accordingly or get punished. For example the
sinning and missing blessings in the Christian culture is similar to the Azande, where if you are

Myrtle Rust Research Paper
It came, It saw, It conquered The battle lines had been drawn and it had been around for about two
years before its first outbreak was witnessed on April 23, 2010 on the coast of New South Wales. The
march then continued to the next targets Victoria and Queensland. Over the course of three years, it
has become one of the biggest biosecurity threats to Australia s ecosystem. This alien intruder is
commonly known as Myrtle Rust. What is Myrtle Rust and how pernicious is it? Myrtle Rust, aka
Uredo rangelii, is a fungal plant pathogen native to South America that affects plants in Myrtaceae
family, such as Tea tree, Beach Cherry and Bottle Brush (DAFF, 2012). Its advent can be witnessed in
the form of small purple flecks and leaf spots on young leaves. It then utilizes its vicious powers to
create tiny, raised spots or pustules, which turn powdery distinctive yellow after a few days. It attacks
young and new plants and causes them to be stunted, leaves to be twisted and even leads to their
death. While the South American trees have some resistance against this aggressor, the Australian ones
are more vulnerable. It has the potential to affect up to 80 per cent of Australian native trees and the
crusade cannot be stopped once it has occupied the bush lands (NSW Scientific ... Show more content

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has issued permits for using
fungicides against Myrtle Rust on non fruit bearing plants of the myrtaceae family. If the infection is
in initial stages, remove the plant after spraying the fungicide or dampening the spores. However
utmost care must be taken while disposal to put a check on further spread and the best way to dispose
it would be burying on site or placing in direct sunlight for 3 4 weeks, after having sealed it in black
plastic. The affected plants must not be moved and similar species must not be replanted immediately

Transformation of Humphrey Van Weyden in Jack London’s...
Transformation of Humphrey Van Weyden in Jack London s The Sea Wolf
Jack London s The Sea Wolf is in some ways a philosophical text and a product of its time. The strain
it puts on the reader between a social Darwinist and utilitarian perspective against that of a more
idealistic one is great. Many times the character of Wolf Larsen is a more consistent articulator of the
Darwinian position and seems to always be getting the upper hand argumentatively. However, it is due
to a phenomenological outlook on the events presented within The Sea Wolf that the alternative
becomes intelligible. After all, the endeavor to improve is one thing which identifies us as human. The
understanding of what constitutes this improvement varies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Thus, since both the protagonist and the antagonist of this story read in order to educate themselves,
they both demonstrate a desire toward self betterment.
Yet the two character s understanding of what this self betterment is supposed to be is poles apart.
Where Wolf s view is purely materialistic and Darwinian, Hump s position is, at least initially, entirely
idealistic and metaphysical. And in the outset, each can only see the possibility of their own position,
discounting the other s. Hump confesses in his thoughts, how could I explain my idealism to this man?
How could I put into speech a something felt, a something like the strains of music heard in sleep, a
something that convinced yet transcended utterance? (35). Yet Wolf remains unshaken from beginning
to end. I believe that life is a mess ...It is like yeast, a ferment, a thing that moves and may move for a
minute, an hour, a year, or a hundred years, but that in the end will cease to move. The big eat the little
that they may continue to move, the strong eat the weak that they may retain their strength. The lucky
eat the most and move the longest, that is all, (35). This contrast endures throughout the entire novel,
and even in the end Wolf utters his last word as BOSH! So, once again, Wolf and Hump hold two
entirely different and very singular

Principles Of Kanban Methodology
Today Kanban methodology is especially popular in software development. But few people know that
it was invented for other industry. Kanban originated in Japan in 1940s. Of course there was no
software industry at that time. The methodology was invented by the employees of Toyota
Corporation as a project management tool. It was aimed at improving the quality of production and
minimizing the terms of its delivery. In 1940s delivery of certain production to the customer just in
time was a great problem. The companies that implemented Kanban project management system
performed this task successfully regardless of the conditions.
The success of Kanban methodology can be explained by the fact that it is based on three main
principles.
The first principle says that a Kanban team must consider ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kanban development methodology is defined as one of the Agile methods. It has been extremely
popular among software developers in recent years. Partially that is because of its unique ability to
manage any projects. If you use Kanban for software development, you are able to create the product
of supreme quality within the shortest amount of time. In most cases that is just what any customer
and user needs.
Like any other Agile software development methodology, Kanban is based on strong customer and
user involvement into the workflow. As we have already mentioned, consideration of the customer
demands was the main principle of Kanban methodology even before it applied to software
development. In this industry it was improved even more. Kanban is a software development
methodology with the greatest range of customer involvement into its projects. In Kanban the
customer participates at the process of work constantly. Usually he is represented by a man named the
Product Owner. He is responsible for gathering user stories and prioritizing them in the product

The Friendships Of Friendship In The Movie, The Cars Movie
Friendships off to a rocky start in, The Cars Movie
Judging others isn t the best way to start friendship and there s no question about it. In the movie cars,
Lightning McQueen; a hotshot race car is on his way to the annular Piston Cup, he runs into some
trouble on the way and accidentally departs from his path there. He stumbles into a small hick town
called Radiator Springs where he destroys the roads in panic and meets the love of his life. He is held
in the junkyard for his crimes of wrecking the road which is costing him time to get back in time for
the Piston Cup. Throughout his time there he meets new people that will grow to be the most loyal and
true friends he will ever meet. In the film, Cars by the screenwriter Joe Ranft, uses the outcast to assert
that we as humans tend to judge others that are different from us because we are insecure about our
own flaws.
Next, characters jumping to conclusions, judging and assuming things is seen throughout the movie. It
s a bad habit which affects how relationships turn out greatly. For example, when Lightning McQueen
crashed into town trying to get back to Mack, his ride to the Piston Cup in California. McQueen
crashed into the town statue and got caught on it while he kept driving. The statue got caught on the
roads and caused them to crack and crumble. Lastly McQueen crashes into Red the town s firetruck s
flowers. Red was very upset, he was so upset that he was furious and started to cry. Red did not

Factors That Affect The And Bettering Ceramic Membrane...
In 1899 ionic conductivity was observed in a solution of ZrO2(Y2O3) however the potential for use in
oxygen separation technology has only gained attention in the last 35 years. The best oxygen
separation capabilities are seen in defect free ceramic membranes and result in 100% pure oxygen.
There are a number of different structures that ceramic membranes can take fluorite, perovskite,
pyrochlore, brownmillerite and some others. The main two are the fluorite and perovskite type, which
will be discussed in further detail later in this report. Oxygen flux is the rate the oxygen transfers
though the membrane and a higher oxygen flux means a better membrane. Generally a dense ceramic
membrane with a perovskite structure at temperatures greater ... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
How this is achieved depends on the types of oxygen separation membrane. A driving force is required
for there to be any oxygen transfer though the membrane, the two potential driving forces are a
electrical potential gradient or a chemical potential gradient. The pure oxygen conducting membrane
uses a electrical potential gradient, for this electrodes are used to provide a pathway for the electron
transfer as shown in figure Xa and the extent of oxygen transfer can be manipulated by the supply of
an electric current. Where as in mixed ionic electronic conducting membranes a chemical potential
gradient, no electrodes are required for this and instead a pressure differential on either side of the
membrane is necessary and the membrane can be of single phase or duel phase as shown in figure Xb.
Although it is ideal to have membranes free of any defects, defect free materials are very rare if not
impossible to manufacture. There are two categories defects can fall into, either an electronic defect or
a structural defect. The electric defects are associated with the ionization and formation of electrons to
maintain electric neutrality. Structural defects are associated with the crystalline structure of the
membrane and can be classed into three categories; point defects, line defects and plane defects.
Defects can form externally though contact with the environment or within though the consequence of
impurities. Expand if I find

Shakespeare s Hamlet
Hamlet: The Character of Ophelia
Concerning the Ophelia of Shakespeare s tragic drama Hamlet, is she an innocent type or not? Is she a
victim or not? This essay will explore these and other questions related to this character.
Rebecca West in A Court and World Infected by the Disease of Corruption viciously, and perhaps
unfoundedly, attacks the virginity of Ophelia:
There is no more bizarre aspect of the misreading of Hamlet s character than the assumption that his
relations with Ophelia were innocent and that Ophelia was a correct and timid virgin of exquisite
sensibilities. . . . She was not a chaste young woman. That is shown by her tolerance of Hamlet s
obscene conversations, which cannot be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He dismisses Hamlet s overtures as Affection, puh! Polonius considers Ophelia a green girl, incapable
of recognizing true love: These blazes . . . you must not take for fire. He gets her assurance that she
will not talk with Hamlet anymore.
When the ghost talks privately to Hamlet, he learns not only about the murder of his father, but also
about the unfaithfulness and adultery of his mother. Gertrude was seduced by that incestuous, that
adulterate beast,/With witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts Claudius himself prior to his brother s
passing. So lust, though to a radiant angel link d,/Will sate itself in a celestial bed,/And prey on
garbage. In the mind of Hamlet, this drastically reduces the goodness of womankind generally. Hamlet
chooses to use an antic disposition to disguise his actions as he maneuvers to kill the one who
poisoned his father in the garden. Wilkie and Hurt say that Shakespeare is particularly fond of double
plotting (2156).
Ophelia is shortly affected by the protagonist s mad conduct. And immediately she goes to her father,
Polonius, to explain how she is so affrighted as a result of Hamlet s visit:
My lord, as I was sewing in my closet,
Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced;
No hat upon his head; his stockings foul d,

  • 2. Still Culture In Still Life Still life, a distinct genre and professional specialization, developed as a separate category in the late sixteenth century. It gave the artists more freedom in the arrangement of elements within a composition than other types of genres such as landscape or portraiture. A style of ostentatious still life painting emerged in the Netherlands and prominent artists, like Willem Claesz Heda, emphasized the abundance by depicting a diversity of objects, fruits, flowers and dead game, often together with animals. This still life reminded viewers of the prosperity of the Republic; it spoke about the bounty of God s creation and the nature of art and life. At first sight, Heda s painting, Still Life with a Gilt Cup (1635) appears to welcome the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today, food is seen as a necessary part of life, with no need of the luxury, although the opulent cuisines are famous too. Food in Netherlands shapes and is constantly shaped by the Dutch society. The country s cuisine has been established by its cultivation (fishing, farming, domesticating animals) and the history of Netherlands. In the prosperous Dutch Golden Age, when the urban merchant class dominated the affluent Dutch society, the haute cuisine was largely limited to the aristocracy and wealthy citizens, consisting of a rich variety of fruits, cheeses, meat, seafood, wine and nuts. The Dutch empire enabled spices, sugar and exotic fruits as well as tea and coffee to be imported to the country. Exotic ingredients such as dates, rice, cinnamon, ginger and saffron were gradually introduced. Thus, today, Netherlands is home to different cultures and external influences, having a variety of foods. Chinese Indonesian, Surinamese, French and Italian food are a part of the Dutch diet. From piping hot street snacks to heart warming stews, pea soups to french fries with mayonnaise, meat croquets to raw herrings, freshly baked breads to delicious cheeses and from Belgium waffles to pies filled with spiced apples, the Dutch cuisine is celebrated with special ... • 3. Capital Punishment During The Colonial Era The public opinion within the United States on capital punishment has fluctuated since its early establishment during the colonial era. The debate about the use of capital punishment has been shaped by factors such as class, gender, age but most importantly race. During the colonial era, Britain was the biggest influence on America when it came to utilizing the death penalty. The death penalty was used for minor offenses such as stealing, killing animals, and trading with Indians. As the late 1700s approached, a movement towards abolishing the death penalty began. Beccaria wrote an essay in 1767 called Crimes and Punishment, that had a significant impact on the world s opinion towards the death penalty (Bohm,1999). Beccaria suggested ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zimring began to research executions by different regions in the United States and noted the similarities between historical lynching trends and current patterns in the use of Capital punishment (Gabbidon and Greene). Throughout the research Zimring conducted, he noticed that there was a strong correlation between legal lynchings and death penalty executions after lynching were made illegal. The data indicated through 1889 to 1918 that 88 percent of lynchings were carried out in the South. In comparison, through 1977 to 2000 81 percent of executions were held in the South (Gabbidon and Greene). In conclusion, Zimring believed that the death penalty is a racialized system that has replaced lynchings. This created a renaissance of capital punishment between the 1920s and 1940s. During the 1930s, there was an average of 167 executions each year. These annual numbers were similar to the number of lynchings recorded in the 1890s (Vandiver, Giacopassi, Lofquist, 2006). After this era, the support for death penalty began to slowly decline, as 42% of people showed support for the death penalty in the 1950s (Bohm,1999). Following the decline in the support of the death penalty, a moratorium on executions began in 1972 during the case Furman v. Georgia. Furman argued that the death penalty was arbitrary and violated the constitution (Mallicoat and Brown 255 280). In a five to four vote, the Supreme Court ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Compulsive Disorder Of Leonardo Dicaprio s OCD ) Leonardo DiCaprio s OCD I ll never let go, Jack. I promise. One of the greatest movies of all time stars the best actor ever, Leonardo DiCaprio. He has obsessive compulsive disorder, but is still one of the greatest actors. If something was hard, he worked even harder to do it perfectly. Even if his disorder disrupted him and his fellow co workers, he worked through those difficult times to get the job done. Obsessive compulsive disorder, also known as OCD, is an anxiety disorder which involves obsessions, compulsions, and can also consume a person s everyday life (Steketee 1). Compulsions are obsessions performed into ritualistic behaviors (Parks 11). They can lead a person to have very vicious cycles in which they are powerless to stop. Obsessions most of the time revolves around fears of germs in which they avoid using public toilets and touching items. This can get so extreme to where they will wash their hands so many times their skin will be raw, and they will shower so much their bodies will start bleeding or chapping (12). There are many symptoms of having OCD. For example, sufferers can avoid situations that involve obsessions, overestimating harm, and worrying excessively. Sufferers of OCD can have multiple fears such as hurting loved ones, using sharp objects near people, not counting high enough which would cause a natural disaster, and throwing items away (12). • 5. How Does Achilles Show Honor In The Iliad In Homer s epic, Iliad, Achilles is one of the main figures of the Trojan War. Achilles beliefs that he defines throughout the passage are influenced by the manipulations of war that he encounters, along with a focus on what the idea of glory entails and the effects that it has on one s honor. They are two separate concepts, he recognizes, and during the Trojan War he knew that he could not have both. In the selected passage from Book Nine, it is clear that Achilles, the Greek warrior, questions and reevaluates the idea of honor and glory, as he believes honor and glory are inherently incompatible, thus causing him to sacrifice one in order to have the other. This reevaluation emphasizes the abnormal attitude from a once fierce warrior and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Angry and calling Agamemnon a hypocrite, he states, I hate it like I hate hell / the man who says one thing and think another (168). Strategically beginning his soliloquy with a hostile accusation sets the tone for the rest of the speech. This tone and structure is harsh, hyperbolic, and jumps between the two arguments from which he bases his response: He cheated me, wronged me. Never again (170), Achilles declares, focusing on the loss of honor and placing blame on Agamemnon. Just 29 lines after, however, Achilles switches his focus to the other reason for leaving. Nothing is worth my life, not all the riches / they say Troy held before the Greeks came... (171). This quick shift of focus is similar to a rant going back and forth between arguments. His mind is not balancing on one thought, but rather driven by emotions and rhetorical questions. For example, he brings up, why do the Greeks have to fight the Trojans? Why did Agamemnon lead the army to Troy if not for the sake of fair haired Helen? And now he thinks he s going to win me back? (169). This tone and these rhetorical questions serve to exaggerate and humanize the argument. Achilles can only deal with so much he is only human, after all, and must be treated like one. He is not Agamemnon s war puppet. The meaning and purpose for Achilles rant is not muddled in the harsh and edgy speech; it is simply shown in various ways. He will not fight for Agamemnon and is making it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Why School Start Times For Students Essay Many young students, from the U.S. and abroad, have to wake up at an earlier time in order to get to school. What many of them do not realize however is the effects it can have on their body s development. Sleep is seen as unnecessary or even pointless to many young children, but as they get older, their appreciation for the act becomes widely apparent. Lots of educational systems all over the country still start school at a time earlier than 8 o clock in the morning. The developing students who have to wake up at such an early time don t realize that they shouldn t have to wake up so early in the morning, and that is because their bodies simply don t function properly at a certain time and with a lack of sleep. I believe that school start times for students that are in primary and secondary school should start later because doing so will have a positive effect on their overall physical health as well as their psychosocial development. School start times play a very big role in a student s overall development, especially when they aren t getting enough sleep because of it. An important factor to consider for a student s development is the act of sleeping; that a lack of it can cause serious problems to the students growing body. According to research done with Brown University s Julie Boergers, the author of the letter Benefits of later school start times , the amount of sleep that adolescents need ranges from 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep. Only 17 percent of these students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Blackrock Play Essay The first of two plays that has been considered for selection in upcoming International Theatre for Young People s Festival soon to be held in Vancouver, Canada is Blackrock by the late Nick Enright. The plays must represent the values, attitudes and beliefs of today s Australian Youth Culture. Blackrock explores the strength of mateship, the importance of image and the dangers of peer pressure, parties and underage drinking. The second play is the popular Blurred by the playwright Stephen Davis; which offers a comedic and clever representation of perhaps the most famous Australian youth orientated rite of passage, Schoolies . Both of these plays portray representations of the highest calibre of Australian youth culture. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now you get in the van. Your turn to look after me. (P56 7) This illustrates not only what type of character Ricko is but also the way in which he interacts with other characters in Blackrock. He uses foul language such as: You are, man, you fucken are (p57) The language used in Blackrock depicts the Surfie sub culture that resides within Australian Youth Culture. A prime example of how Enright has utilized language to appeal to the targeted group, teens, was one of Toby s initial lines. Toby is a close friend of Jared and also sister of Jared s girlfriend Rachel: I ll put on a keg show down the surf club (P3) Enright also exploits Australian colloquialisms to reiterate the theme of teenage rebellion, something generic of the western world. Unfortunately inherit of teenage rebellion is anti social behaviour so eloquently put by Dave: Bet ya ten bucks you can t take out that street light (P27) Also it is apparent that the teenage characters in this play, are excessively disrespectful of their parents: Diane (mother) Where are you going? Jared (son) Shut up! Shut the f@#$ up! (P29) Enright also to connect with audiences uses colloquialism and refers to things that aren t widely apparent internationally, only adding to the genuine underpinning of the play: It s not a ... But that did not stop these men from congregating, not the powerful winds, the beating rain, nor the sky splitting lightening. Their cathedral was calling to them, the old run down barn in the middle of an abandoned field. From the barn just under the drumming rain, you could hear the stomping of feet. Just under the howling winds, an orchestra of screams, choruses of curses ring. And just under the crashing of thunder, the sounds of bone meeting flesh beats. The pit sits in the barn, the pit is where the shouts, cries and curses are being flung, and the pit is where the champ mud covered, stands toe to toe with another would be challenger. • 11. Hurricane Sandy Essay HURRICANE SANDY Hurricane Sandy was a tropical cyclone that devastated portions of the Caribbean, Mid Atlantic and Northeastern United States in late October 2012. The eighteenth named storm and tenth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles. Sandy is estimated in early calculations to have caused damage of at least $20 billion. It is having various political effects in the United States especially in terms of the general election scheduled for November 6, 2012. Hurricane Sandy developed at 1500 UTC on October 22, when the National Hurricane Center initiated advisories on Tropical Depression Eighteen to the south of Kingston, Jamaica. The system developed from an area of low pressure and had organized convection. It moved slowly at first due to a ridge to the north. Low wind shear and warm waters allowed for strengthening, and the system became Tropical Storm Sandy late on October 22. Early on October 24, an eye began developing, and it was moving steadily northward due to an approaching trough. Later that day, the NHC upgraded Sandy to hurricane status about 65 mi south of Kingston, Jamaica. At about 1900 UTC that day, Sandy made landfall near Kingston with winds of about 80 mph. Just offshore Cuba, Sandy rapidly intensified to winds of 110 mph, and at that intensity it made landfall just west of Santiago de Cuba at 0525 UTC on October 25. Whenever it rains, the town and a large number of major areas gets engulfed by uncontrollable amounts of water. The streets and roadways get backed up with so much excess water that they must close off certain parts of town to ensure the safety of the people who live there. Flooding in Bryan, College Station is an enormous inconvenience to the people who live there. This issue can be solved by simply collecting more tax money, fixing the drainage system, and by coming up with procedures or regulations for future constructions, so people can build their new establishments on higher grounds. • 13. Reflection Essay On Observation To obtain knowledge, one must study; but to receive wisdom, one must observe. Observation, often defined as the action or process of watching something or someone to gain information. Throughout the semester, students within the education department had the genuine opportunity to both learn and grow as future educators through observations outside of the classroom. Throughout the semester, I chose to observe at the following programs: Breakaway at Westridge Church, Poole Elementary School s Learning Bridge, and AWANA at Callie Harbin Baptist Church. As a future educator, I learned that often observation is education as education and learning are so much more than a textbook. For my first observation, I chose to observe at a respite event known as Breakaway at Westridge Church located in Dallas Georgia. Breakaway is a cost free respite event for both special needs participants and their families. This function allows individuals of all ages to enjoy supervised entertainment and activities planned precisely for them. Breakaway, Outdoor Extravaganza, an event consisting of carnival clowns, games, outdoor inflatables, corn hole, hayrides, arts, crafts, face painting, petting zoo, music, and so much more. Through this observation, I had the genuine opportunity to view life from different perspectives as special needs individuals enjoyed a day prepared explicitly for them. For example, I had the opportunity to share such a joyous day with an individual who holds my heart captive. I sat back and watched as he rode the hayride with his volunteer; consequently, my heart filled with joy as he laughed the whole way through. Once the hayride came to a close, he and his volunteer traveled to visit the fire trucks and see all of its bells and whistles as he had the chance to climb inside. In addition to all the excellent outdoor activities, each child had a chance to hang out, listen to music, see ballet dancers perform, and hear the word of God brought forth through interactive Bible stories. This experience overjoyed my heart as I saw firsthand that children with special needs paint the world with beautiful colors every day as they love more profound than one s mind can fathom. • 15. Kelly Outbreak Analysis The Kelly outbreak is a famous phenomenon in Australia s colonial history. Whilst some people prefer to see the outbreak as a simple criminal incident between an outlaw and the police, most historians view it as a broader sociological phenomenon, involving conflict between a larger rural community and the colonial authorities. An important issue for historians has been to understand the underlying causes of this criminal outbreak, whether it was mainly due to personal, ethnic or socio economic factors. This essay will critically examine each of these explanations and argue that the actions of the Kellys and their supporters, and the reactions of the police can best be understood in terms of broad socio economic developments in rural Victoria at the time. In his article, Ned Kelly s Sympathisers, Doug Morrissey suggests that Kelly s Irish heritage was largely responsible for the Kelly outbreak 1. To support his claim, he points to the intense emotional relationships in the Quinn/Kelly clan and the high percentage of Irish sympathisers among Ned s supporters 2. Ned Kelly was clearly imbued with a sense of his Irish heritage, but the evidence does not suggest that this was a major contributing factor in the outbreak. Public sympathy, it seemed, crossed social and ethnic barriers 3 and was quite widespread, especially after the Euroa National Bank robbery, where the efficiency, lack of violence and manner of the gang were well noted 4. This quote is from the first line of the introduction to the play of Julius Caesar and I think that this line is the best way to start off this essay. If we took a look at each main character in this play, except for Antony, we can see how their mistakes usually would lead to their downfalls. For example, Caesar mistake of not listening to the warnings, the omens, or even his wife telling him to stay home because she had a nightmare about him, led to his death at the Senate. Another example would be Cassius. His mistake of listening to Brutus when it came to marching down to Philippi to face Antony and Octavius s army led to the defeat of his army and Cassius committing suicide. Now we come to the main focus of this essay which is Brutus. Some people argue that Brutus is a tragic hero and a sympathetic figure. Others argue the opposite. I believe that Brutus noble qualities led to his ignoble downfall which included failure, loss, and shame. While we read through this play we can see many examples of Brutus failures. Different occasions where he was manipulated by people he called his friends, Brutus being too trusting of others, and his sense of honor blocking his common sense. This funding could easily go towards other areas of society, benefiting the very people that the candidates wish to govern. Rather than directing negative attention, I believe that candidates should reach out to the public to gain support. Campaigning for presidency should not be about winning or who raises the most money. Presidency should be about protecting and caring for the American people. The conduct of campaigns should be monitored in order to limit spending and to prevent negative advertising towards opposite candidates. Candidates running for office should depend less on government funding and turn towards the public for their support. • 31. Symbolism In Richard Cory, By Edwin Arlington Robinson Edwin Arlington Robinson was born in the village of Head Tide in the town of Alna, Maine, on December 22, 1869, third son of Edward and Mary Elizabeth Robinson. He described his childhood in Maine as stark and unhappy . His parents had wanted a girl, and did not name him until he was six months old. When they vacationed for a holiday there a woman drew a name from a hat and chose Edwin He hated the family s habit of calling him Win, and as an adult he always signed himself as E. A. The speaker of Richard Cory uses symbols, imagery, and wordplay. In the poem Richard Cory, the author describes the townspeople watching him as the people on the pavement. This creates the assumption that they all admire Richard Cory for an unknown reason. As the poem continues, he is described as a gentleman from sole to crown as if he was looked upon as royalty. He s separated from the speaker by his wealth, his manners, and fashion. These traits make his death at the end all the more shocking. As a reader, we are left with the realization that speaker at the end of the poem didn t truly want to be like Cory at all. He was unhappy and people who idolized him much prefered working for life rather than be happy and have it all. He was also a man who had everything but had nothing all at once. Adored by many, but was loved by nobody. Robinson s writing with his use of imagery and ironic language, gives the reader a sense of how Cory s life was scrutinized by people who did not know him and was ultimately responsible for his death. In usual poems the speaker is in the story itself but instead the speaker tells the story as a viewer because the speaker did not know Cory personally. It seemed that the speaker forgot about his own life when he observed Richard Cory s but the speaker is unaware of the suffering that lead to his suicide. Cory must have realized that the public thought he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place . Through this use of wordplay, the poem suggests that Cory was forced to act in an unquestionable way because the public put him on a pedestal. He could never let his guard down he was constantly surrounded by fanatics that expected him to act and behave like a man ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Toys And Gender Stereotypes Compartmentalization is a process that begins before a person even takes their first breath in this world. The color of their room is picked out based upon gender as is their clothes, toys, and name all before they are born. Girls get girl names, girl toys, and other girly things so that they know what gender they are, as if it was a hard thing to figure out. The same thing occurs with boys but young ladies are the ones being held back from aspiring to do big things or really anything other than cooking and being a mom. Pleasant Company later came out with American Girl in 1986 which were different from Barbie and typically came with a book. The books usually captured the past in a romanticized manor and but also had some very empowering messages for girls which was a step in the right direction. Then Bratz in 2001 made by MGA Entertainment which had an entirely new take on gender role orientation. Research presented by Karniol, Stuemler Cohen, and Lahav Gur (2012) suggest that girls gender role orientations have an impact on which doll they prefer. The study they conducted pertained only to younger girls who explained their preference as to why they might choose a Bratz doll over a Barbie doll or why they might not even have a preference at all and how their perception of gender coincides with their choices. Bratz were marketed to teens, or dolls for tweens, which appealed largely to older girl on their way to becoming teens. In their research they look at feminine versus masculine traits in the dolls and incorporate how the girls might associate those traits with the dolls they state that, Feminine girls, who are more gender stereotyped, would be expected to indicate greater liking of Barbie, which is more stereotypical in her clothing, coloring, and appearance. Bean use past demand data and a specific item forecast to decide how many units of that item to stock? L.L. Bean uses several different calculations in order to determine the number of units of a particular item it should stock, whether it is a new item or a never out item. The first piece of data that is required is a point forecast for the item in the future period. This comes from the forecasting department, and is based off of the book forecast and past demand data. For a new item, there is a lot more judgment involved, especially with trying to estimate how much demand this new product will generate. They also need to know the selling price of the item. From these two pieces of data, they can then calculate the profit generated from each individual item (profit = selling price cost of item). The third piece of data they need is the price if they item becomes liquidated. Thus, they can calculate the loss of an individual item if it becomes liquidated. Using these calculations, they can use the methods mentioned in Question #1 to make a decision of how many units of a particular item to stock. Essentially, we need to compare the costs associated with understocking and overstocking inventory. The costs of understocking, as mentioned above, not only includes short terms losses like the loss of the sale for that item at that time, but also include loss of future business due to customer dissatisfaction. We must also consider that if a particular item is not in stock, the entire purchase orders may be cancelled as per the terms and conditions not being met. The costs of overstocking include the cost to hold that inventory but we also need to consider that it might change if the salvage value of a product leftover depends on the number of units remaining at the end of the season. If we have a lot of product leftover, then the liquidation value might be a lot less. We have to take all these factors into consideration when making the decision of how many ... • 38. Relationship Between Culture And Economic Incentives In the following, I will argue that in order to understand change we need a concrete understanding of the relationship between culture and economic incentives, not a set primacy of one over the other. Change should ideally be explained by a synthesis in which both culture and economic incentives are taken into account. It is not only about stating that there is a relationship but also about analysing how that relationship works in terms of mechanisms. section{Synthesis in an Ontologically Divided Field?} In this section, I will develop the scope for synthesis regarding culture and economic incentives in a political economic analysis of change. I claim that we need two levels of synthesis, one on the conceptual level, one on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to this, the concept of incentives as economic incentives should be softened if we want to understand its link to culture. There are various types of incentives, not only material also intangible and expressive incentives (cite[195]{leighley1995attitudes}). This may lead to ambiguous responses if they interact with subjective feelings and desires. Hence, if the model includes non material incentives like esteem or expressing one s identity, the relationship between culture and economic incentives becomes a much closer one to analyse. Expressive incentives have a theoretical significance, which shows that the rational choice understanding of the human nature is incomplete (cite[195 197]{leighley1995attitudes}). Behaviour in groups or societies is more complex. Norms condition decision making in groups. Nonetheless, in addition to these cultural factors, the personal motivations and incentives for a certain behaviour within societies need to be considered (cite[12]{laffont2009theory}). My aim is that if we synthesise rational choice and cultural perspectives, more phenomena become explainable without completely abandoning rational choice assumptions. I have never been exposed to the Indian culture but while reading this book it seems that they have similar beliefs than we do, just quoted differently. Detachment was one of their practices I found interesting. Reasons to be detached is greatly explained in this quote, Those who are compulsively attached to the results of action cannot really enjoy what they do; they get downcast when things do not work out and cling more desperately when they do (55). This quote is simply saying that we as a whole are not focused on what we should be doing, we only focus on what we are doing to be perfect. If we act without worrying we may even be able to enjoy ourselves instead. Even though detachment is practiced in the Indian culture, everyone should practice it. In the religion I participate in, we tend to put value on everything. Some people may not want to read the Gita or practice any of their practices due to the fact that it may not be their religion. I feel that you should really view certain things without judging. I would consider practicing detachment in order to help ease tension. When you are attached to someone or somethings, anything can happen to it which cares you to feel a certain way. However, if you were practicing detachment, you wouldn t really care if something happens to it. You also wouldn t be as hurt; this is when you find yourself thinking everything happens for a reason. The march then continued to the next targets Victoria and Queensland. Over the course of three years, it has become one of the biggest biosecurity threats to Australia s ecosystem. This alien intruder is commonly known as Myrtle Rust. What is Myrtle Rust and how pernicious is it? Myrtle Rust, aka Uredo rangelii, is a fungal plant pathogen native to South America that affects plants in Myrtaceae family, such as Tea tree, Beach Cherry and Bottle Brush (DAFF, 2012). Its advent can be witnessed in the form of small purple flecks and leaf spots on young leaves. It then utilizes its vicious powers to create tiny, raised spots or pustules, which turn powdery distinctive yellow after a few days. It attacks young and new plants and causes them to be stunted, leaves to be twisted and even leads to their death. In the film, Cars by the screenwriter Joe Ranft, uses the outcast to assert that we as humans tend to judge others that are different from us because we are insecure about our own flaws. Next, characters jumping to conclusions, judging and assuming things is seen throughout the movie. It s a bad habit which affects how relationships turn out greatly. For example, when Lightning McQueen crashed into town trying to get back to Mack, his ride to the Piston Cup in California. McQueen crashed into the town statue and got caught on it while he kept driving. The statue got caught on the roads and caused them to crack and crumble. Lastly McQueen crashes into Red the town s firetruck s flowers. Red was very upset, he was so upset that he was furious and started to cry. Red did not understand that ... • 51. Factors That Affect The And Bettering Ceramic Membrane... In 1899 ionic conductivity was observed in a solution of ZrO2(Y2O3) however the potential for use in oxygen separation technology has only gained attention in the last 35 years. The best oxygen separation capabilities are seen in defect free ceramic membranes and result in 100% pure oxygen. There are a number of different structures that ceramic membranes can take fluorite, perovskite, pyrochlore, brownmillerite and some others. The main two are the fluorite and perovskite type, which will be discussed in further detail later in this report. Oxygen flux is the rate the oxygen transfers though the membrane and a higher oxygen flux means a better membrane. Generally a dense ceramic membrane with a perovskite structure at temperatures greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How this is achieved depends on the types of oxygen separation membrane. A driving force is required for there to be any oxygen transfer though the membrane, the two potential driving forces are a electrical potential gradient or a chemical potential gradient. The pure oxygen conducting membrane uses a electrical potential gradient, for this electrodes are used to provide a pathway for the electron transfer as shown in figure Xa and the extent of oxygen transfer can be manipulated by the supply of an electric current. Where as in mixed ionic electronic conducting membranes a chemical potential gradient, no electrodes are required for this and instead a pressure differential on either side of the membrane is necessary and the membrane can be of single phase or duel phase as shown in figure Xb. Although it is ideal to have membranes free of any defects, defect free materials are very rare if not impossible to manufacture. There are two categories defects can fall into, either an electronic defect or a structural defect. The electric defects are associated with the ionization and formation of electrons to maintain electric neutrality. Structural defects are associated with the crystalline structure of the membrane and can be classed into three categories; point defects, line defects and plane defects. Defects can form externally though contact with the environment or within though the consequence of impurities. Expand if I find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Shakespeare s Hamlet Hamlet: The Character of Ophelia Concerning the Ophelia of Shakespeare s tragic drama Hamlet, is she an innocent type or not? Is she a victim or not? This essay will explore these and other questions related to this character. Rebecca West in A Court and World Infected by the Disease of Corruption viciously, and perhaps unfoundedly, attacks the virginity of Ophelia: There is no more bizarre aspect of the misreading of Hamlet s character than the assumption that his relations with Ophelia were innocent and that Ophelia was a correct and timid virgin of exquisite sensibilities. . . . She was not a chaste young woman. That is shown by her tolerance of Hamlet s obscene conversations, which cannot be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He dismisses Hamlet s overtures as Affection, puh! Polonius considers Ophelia a green girl, incapable of recognizing true love: These blazes . . . you must not take for fire. He gets her assurance that she will not talk with Hamlet anymore. When the ghost talks privately to Hamlet, he learns not only about the murder of his father, but also about the unfaithfulness and adultery of his mother. Gertrude was seduced by that incestuous, that adulterate beast,/With witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts Claudius himself prior to his brother s passing. So lust, though to a radiant angel link d,/Will sate itself in a celestial bed,/And prey on garbage. In the mind of Hamlet, this drastically reduces the goodness of womankind generally. Hamlet chooses to use an antic disposition to disguise his actions as he maneuvers to kill the one who poisoned his father in the garden. Wilkie and Hurt say that Shakespeare is particularly fond of double plotting (2156). Ophelia is shortly affected by the protagonist s mad conduct. And immediately she goes to her father, Polonius, to explain how she is so affrighted as a result of Hamlet s visit: My lord, as I was sewing in my closet, Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced; No hat upon his head; his stockings foul d, Ungarter d, and ... I was aware of the consequences as a result of not listening to the doctor, but I still don t regret it, Lavelle says her head held high as she places her hand on the injured hip. She goes on to talk about how it does not stop her from doing all her other sports that she plays as well; Sailing, Cross Country, Track and Field, and of course the Irish Dancing. My family is my greatest source of support, especially my parents, Lavelle says with fond memory. Her two older brothers; Kevin, age 17, and Ruaire, age 20, are where she gets her competitive spark. We compete over just about everything. Lavelle said. Maeve is pretty tough, after all she s managed to survive with Kev and I as older brothers. Lavelle s older brother Ruaire said with a ...
