Analysis Of A Gentleman s Life
Tristam Shandy, A Gentleman s Life
Tristam Shandy is the narrator of his own life story. The narrative is similar to an autobiographic
account of his life, but the narrative goes farther than that. It examines his philosophy, provides a
glimpse into the standards and ideals of the early 1700s. The work provides an interesting perspective
on the life of a noble man of his time, At times the narration is humorous. Shandy cannot explain
anything simply, but must embellish the tale with long explanations that wander in and out of the
original topic, eventually arriving at the destination. Shandy uses the piece to rationalize the
misfortunes of his life and to try to find meaning in his personal tragedies. This essay will explore
Shandy s explanations of conception, birth, christening, accidental circumcision, and other
circumstances about his own birth. It supports the thesis that Shandy presents his story because he
feels he must rationalize how the philosophy of his father shaped his own opinions. At the time of
Shandy s conception, it was believed that a traumatic experience or energy out of alignment could
affect the mental and physical traits of a child, and that this imbalance would be present throughout
their entire life. When Shandy was conceived, at the very moment of his conception, his mother asked
his father an off topic question that annoyed and distracted his father, throwing the act out of balance
and setting Shandy up for a life of mishaps and maladies. One

Pso Algorithm Is Developed By The Social Behavior Patterns...
3.3 PSO PSO algorithm is developed by the social behavior patterns of the organisms that exist and
interact within large groups. As, it converges at a faster rate than the global optimization algorithms,
the PSO algorithm is applied for solving various optimization problems easily. In the PSO technique, a
population called as a swarm of candidate solutions are encoded as particles in the search space.
Initially, PSO begins with the random initialization of the population. These particles move iteratively
through the D dimensional search space to search the optimal solutions, by updating the position of
each particle. During the movement of the swarm, a vector Xi=(Xi1, Xi2,...., XiD) represents the
current position of the particle i . Vi=(Vi1, Vi2,...., ViD) represents the velocity of the particle which is
in the range of [−vmax, vmax]. The best previous position of a particle is denoted as personal best
Pbest. The global best position obtained by the population is denoted as Gbest. The PSO searches for
the optimal solution by updating the velocity and position of each particle, based on the Pbest and
Gbest. The next position of the particle in the search space is calculated by using the new velocity
value. This process is repeated for a fixed number of times or until a minimum error is achieved. The
rate of the change in the velocity and position of the particle is given as v_id=v_id+c_1 r_1 (p_id x_id
)+c_2 r_2 (p_gd x_id ) (3.1) x_id=x_id+v_id (3.2) Where c_1

Symbolism in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck Essay
Symbolism in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck
The Chrysanthemums , one of John Steinbeck s masterpieces, describes a lonely farmer s wife, Elisa
Allen. Elisa Allen s physical appearance is very mannish yet still allows a hint of a feminine side to
peek through. John Steinbeck brings symbolism into play to represent Elisa Allen s frustrations and
hidden passions. Isolation is another representation through symbolism found in The
Chrysanthemums. Elisa s failing detached marriage is represented through two symbols. The two
reoccurring symbols are the chrysanthemums and fences. John Steinbeck draws pity from the reader
for Elisa Allen who desperately wishes to experience the passions of a fulfilling marriage and the
stimulation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

(Steinbeck 1463). Steinbeck, by allowing the dress to be seen, is showing the readers Elisa passion
that long to be unbridled. The manly gloves that she wore to protect her hands show that she still
wants to be a women yet long for the adventure a man s life contains. Clothing was not the only
symbol of repression in John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums. There are many symbolic references
to Elisa Allen as a sexually repressed and frustrated woman. One representation of the chrysanthemum
is Elisa s passion and eagerness to live and experience life a content woman. While tending her
chrysanthemums she pulled out the crisp little roots and trimmed of the leaves of each one with her
scissors (Steinbeck 1464). This is a symbolism of Elisa Allen closing off all opportunities to grow as a
sexual woman; She has resigned herself to the monotonous life as a complacent farmer s wife (Lee 1).
The figured print dress (Steinbeck 1463) under the apron shows the readers that Elisa is aware of her
sexuality but instead of acting on it has chosen to subdue it. She keeps her sexuality and passions
under control like she cares for her chrysanthemums laid [in a] small [and] orderly pile (Steinbeck

Value Of Studying History Essay
What is the value, if any, of studying history?
It is often claimed that the value of studying history is that it allows us to make decisions and
predictions regarding the present and future based on the mistakes of the past. Indeed, Edmund Burke
stated as early as 1790 that In history, a great volume is unrolled for our instruction, drawing the
materials of future wisdom from the past errors and infirmities of mankind. 1 However, in this essay I
will show that this is not necessarily the case, and will argue instead that the value of history is that it
allows us to frame our present in the context of the past, and therefore better understand ourselves as a
species and as a society. To illustrate this I will be using the examples of the 2008 financial crisis in
relation to the UK housing market, and the current conflict in Afghanistan in relation to previous wars
in that country.
The UK housing market has long been renowned for being intrinsically volatile 2. As seen in the
graph below, since the early 1970s it has experienced four distinct periods of boom and bust which are
marked each time by an increase in consumer credit (blue line M4).3
This graph clearly shows that each ...bust followed an unsustainable credit induced boom. 4 Therefore
I would argue that lessons from history have not been learned in this case as the cycle of boom and
bust has been repeated four times already and will most likely continue ad infinitum, despite
numerous economists5 and

In savants the encounters of impressive abilities are always linked to extraordinary memory. This one
of a kind memory is very impressive, but only within a very narrow area. For example, a savant may
be able to memories the dictionary, but ask that same person a simple math question, they would be
puzzled to figure it out. The skills often associated with savant syndrome are the ability to play the
piano beautifully, meaning complex pieces one would need months to learn by ear alone , (Howe 955).
Being able to give a day of the week from any past or future date, and solving complex math problems
extremely fast are also common feats performed by savants. Another interesting skill some savants
possess is the perfect appreciation of time without the knowledge of a clock. (Howe 956)
One example of a fictional savant is Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks. Forrest was born with an
IQ of seventy five, witch is lower than the average student able to go to public school. Forrest had
problems learning to read, walking properly, and even learning his left from right. Only after having
his mother pull some strings was he able to go to a normal public school. While attending public high
school he was constantly harassed by boys of his own age and older. An example of this occurs when
Forrest comes home from school and is followed by boys in his class who chased him throwing rocks.
As Forrest grew older, people took advantage of him more and more.

Fear Change
May people will fear change if they do not understand the importance and reason for the changes or
how the change will benefit themselves. If the change is too detailed it leaves room for some to think
about how they will fit in with the changes. Most individuals only fear change because they are not
aware of how the changes will affect them. Somtimes, changes do not work as intended,
implementation difficulties arise, or the organization s circumstances change in ways that render the
planned changes ineffectual (Armenakis, Harris, Cole, Fillmer, 7 Self, 2007, p.274 ).
The first step is to make your team aware of why the changes are important or necessary. Some may

Promotions are always great. Cost decreases can also bring bigger bonuses or more money added to
the organizations annual raises. It was stated that some people do not want to be king or queens.
Usually a promotion requires more work and some people are not interested. If they could continue to
do their job with bigger benefits that could entice people to embrace proposed changes.
An automated system requires less work for everybody involved, which means that they may be
required to work less hours as well. They will have more time to spend at the office and not have to be

CIA Interrogation Tactics
The US Senate Intelligence Committee released a report in 2014 about the interrogation tactics used
by the CIA during George Bush s Presidency after 9/11. Composed mainly by Democrats, it is seen as
containing a strong bias which led to the CIA being depicted as cruel and unjust, and guilty of illegal
torture. Coined the torture report, it s unsurprising that there are a few who are wary of the CIA after
reading this. However, it seems that the Senate report misinterpreted the interrogation methods of the
CIA as torture. There may be instances in which the interrogation goes too far, but there is no denying
it has significantly helped America s fight against terrorism and saving lives. Although the CIA s

Government Vs. Voting In The Court System
How much money a person pays for taxes, how public schools work, why individuals protest are small
ways the government impact and change Americans lives. Learning about the government is beyond
crucial because the government affects every angle of Americans lives on a daily basis. Learning
about the government and the nation in general assists citizens in getting involved and acknowledging
their Constitutional rights. Additionally, it makes citizens appreciative and more inspired. Just like the
government have the power to change the nation, citizens do as well by getting involved. However, in
order to use any power beneficially citizens need to acknowledge the governmental system. For
instance, when citizens realize that their votes matter they will for sure get involved. Furthermore,
when citizens learn about the government they realize there are variety of ways to voice their
opinions. For example, voting in the presidency election, joining a work union, or becoming a poll

Comparing Hasker And The Star Trek
Upon reading both Hasker and the Star Trek synopsis, I have come to the conclusion that Picard and
Maddox exhibited different views of Data and because of this difference in beliefs tension is felt
throughout their arguments. To begin, I feel the mind/body problem exhibited by Picard is one of a
materialistic view which states, Man is a wholly material being (Hasker, P. 69). Throughout Picard s
argument it becomes apparent that he regards Data, who is an android, as an officer aboard his ship
and deems him more than just a machine. The reading suggest the human brain functions in a way that
resembles a self operating computer similar to the computer found in Data (Hasker, P. 70) Hasker adds
that our thoughts and other functions of the brain are simply the characteristics of complex, highly
organized physical systems namely that of the brain (Hasker, P. 70). Throughout Picard s argument he
repeatedly echoes Data s use of the word my in respect to Data s rights, freedoms and choices and
asserts the idea that Data is comprised of a brain and body working together forming both ideas and
emotions. Picard views him as having the capability to feel the same emotions as humans as well as
the capacity to make decisions in the same way as a human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Michelangelo Creation Of Adam Essay
Michelangelo is without a doubt, one of the most brilliant artists in history. One of his most famous
masterpieces occupies what is probably the largest canvas on earth: The Sistine Chapel. Each fresco
contains a glimpse of creation using nine separate stories from the book of Genesis. Yet the most
famous image from this 134 ft. x 45 ft. painting is The Creation of Adam. The image of God reaching
down to Adam is so commonplace that many forget, or do not know, how controversial this portrayal
of the divine was in the 16th century. God was a divine king seated upon a throne who wore royal
robes, a papal crown, and held a scepter in his hand. This was not a God that conveyed a sense of
warmness, intimacy, or desire for human contact. God was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Interestingly, the elements that represent this in the painting are God s clothing, nearness to Adam, and
the extended finger. God is no longer clothed in royal finery, but wears a garment that offers no
protection or distance from the created. By adding how close God is to Adam, a strong sense of human
intimacy emerges. Yet the most significant feature of this painting is the outstretched finger of God.
Through touch, God imparts life to Adam. Through touch, Adam receives not only physical breath, but
spiritual breath. Michelangelo himself said, To touch can be to give life. This was true of his famous
painting, but is also true for humanity today. (Keltner)
Research has shown how vital touch is to human development. At the University of California,
Berkley, professor of psychology Dacher Keltner, has conducted extensive research on the science of
human touch. In a lecture to his students, Keltner said, In recent years, a wave of studies has
documented some incredible emotional and physical health benefits that come from touch. This
research is suggesting that touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health.

management expressed confidence in their company s potential. However, the management failed to
foresee the future.
The Yeast Fails to Rise (Weaknesses)
The second half of 2004 failed to meet the managements expectations made earlier in the year. The
company estimated diluted earnings per share of $1.16 for fiscal 2005; actual diluted earnings were
$0.93. The company expected sales would increase 25% in fiscal 2005; actual systemwide sales
increased 14.8%. The company divested the recently acquired Montana Mills operation. It also closed
six underperforming factory stores. In the hours following the announcement of the financial loss, the
company s stock dropped 20%. On May 25, 2004, Krispy Kreme reported a $24.4 million loss for the
first quarter of fiscal 2005. According to the company, the poor performance was because of trendy
low carb diets, and a $34 million write off of its investment in Montana Mills. The stock was now
down 37%. To make matters worse, the company announced that the SEC was investigated shady
accounting practices due to franchise buybacks.

A New Police Chief Mentoring Project
The International Association of Chiefs of Police Research Center Board of executives, Smaller Law

Project (IACP, 2013). Supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice, the
focus is to make available official support to newer law enforcement leaders in the first three years of

geographically and demographically, police departments face additional challenges determining
efficient and effective ways to make use of officers and resources (Roberts, 2000). Administrative
planning and decision making is necessary for efficient and effective operations management in any
setting (Roberts, 2000). Police administrative planning becomes the first step in successful
management of the department. Planning provides administrative officials with better information, an
analysis of the problem at hand, clarity of goals, objectives, and procedures (Swanson, Territo, Taylor,
2012). Planning results in more active distribution of resources, program development and
performance, increased inter and intradepartmental collaboration and organization. Planning provides

The Role Of Corporate Reputation Play Within...
1.What role does corporate reputation play within organizational performance and social
responsibility? Develop a list of factors or characteristics that different stakeholders may use in
assessing corporate reputation. Are these factors consistent across stakeholders? Why or why not?
Having a decent notoriety is the most imperative variable for any business. An organization can spend
numerous decades fabricating a decent notoriety with the utilization of value moral practices. The
issue is the notoriety can be discolored rapidly by a couple of slips in moral judgment. It is the
obligation of the pioneers of an association to be socially mindful so as to keep the notoriety clean and
untarnished. Being socially mindful means the organization must endeavor to be ecologically
benevolent, fair, monetarily capable, and evade sexual and racial issues. In the event that there are any
infringement including these themes, it can have an antagonistic impact on the partners of the
organization. Financial specialists are more prone to put resources into an organization with a strong
notoriety and one that is socially capable. A few variables that partners may use to survey corporate

unsteady. Item quality if the item or administration gave by an organization is solid, the organization is

obscure way of writing starting from 1889. The continuation of the revision and reproduction of the
work Michael Drayton sonnet Idea s Mirror, can be viewed in his poem since there is no help in
reflection to his attempts to woo a lady. Published in 1921, the lament of Springtime, by William
Carlos Williams s presents the theme of losing someone to death and the grief implementing the an
understanding mood. The mood created by the authors Emily Dickinson, Michael Drayton, and
William Carlos Williams develops a heartfelt sorrow and sympathy towards the speaker and their
personal relationships in each poem. In Emily Dickinson s I Felt a Funeral in my Brain a mental
distress and breakdown is displayed through a comparison of a funeral taking place in her mind
through the use of imagery to enhance the mood. Emily Dickinson invites the reader to be part of the
ceremonial that is taking place inside her head inducing a sad yet sympathetic mood. She describes
that her mind was going numb and it was that feeling losing all sense that she states and then a plank

Weakness Of The Constitution By Louis Seidman
The Constitution The Constitution, that has been used to govern this country over the last 200 years
has become ineffective and out dated. The constitution can no longer serve the purpose it was
designed adequately. Weakness to modern society and strong resistance to change has made this
country almost immune to change. Louis Michael Seidman, a Carmack Water House Professor of
Constitutional law at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington D.C. suggest that the
Constitution is no longer useful for the modern day society because the constitution is old fashioned.
Seidman points out some of the out dated and dysfunctional systems implemented by the constitution,
such as revenue measure must originate in the lower chamber and the fact that the political system
keeps people from debating the merits of divisive issues. Seidman also points out the strong obedience
people have to the constitution, which creates a strong resistance to change. Although Seidman

Favelas Of Brazil Essay
World Sporting Events are Much More Than Just Games The cries of mistreated people in the favelas
of Brazil are heard, but not helped. According to the IOC (International Olympic Committee), the
preparations made by Brazil for the World Cup and Olympics have been the worst they have ever
seen. Brazil has reportedly dropped 14 billion on the World Cup alone, the money spent on the World
Cup has gone to stadiums and and all aid for the event. This emmense spending to people being
evicted due to needed space for the events and activities, given low pay because the economy can no

The Brazilians living in the favelas who are revolting are not bad people, they just aren t being treated
the way people are supposed to be treated. With no other way to express their anger towards their
government, they lash out. This is not right, but is it wrong to express yourself? These riots are due to
the overall mistreatment of the people in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Brazil was not ready to say the
least. I am not saying Rio is not a great place to visit, they just were not ready. They were unprepared
for both the Olympics and World Cup. They had to build stadiums fastly and they had to deal with the
outbreak of their own people. Brazil ran into these problems just like any other country does that holds
a worldwide major sporting event. The best two examples to compare to Brazil are Sochi in 2014 and
Beijing in 2008. Sochi 2014 was not as bad as Brazil, but the preparations were morally questionable
when it came to some strategies. The Russian Government, however, was preparing for seven years
for the olympics in sochi, Brazil has been for only four years. Brazil is not ready to say the least, but
even with so much time some things happened that still were not so humane. Overall, Sochi was much
more of a success when it came to preparing for the olympics. In Sochi, there were wild dogs

Bass Fishing (final informative) I have been fishing my whole life, especially bass fish. I normally try
to catch largemouth bass, which are very common where I am from. I was on my high school s bass
fishing team and we actually did pretty well for the most part, especially coming from such a small
school. Largemouth bass are our prime target during these fishing tournaments. A largemouth bass is a

bass fish for fun or you can do it competitively such as tournaments. Tournaments usually go like
every other tournament, you have two people and an adult captain that basically drives the boat and
puts people in the best spots to catch bass. Every tournament usually starts at around 7 in the morning
and goes through to 3 in the afternoon. After the time limit is reached, the boats then unload and get

much more. Even so, the littlest choices can affect the rest of their lives on how they live. Another
example is having more ability to do things when going further in becoming a teen. Like as a child,
they are being told what to do and what not to do. When growing older, an adult will be more

The Most Ironic Law Of All Time
The Most Ironic Law of all Time
The era of cable television reaches its final breath. Digital media begins flourishing. Online
communities and social media reign over, spoiling our fingers with content of all calibers. The internet
is causing a change so radical that legal matters are still catching up with it. As the Founding Fathers
intended, effective law should include creating law adapts to society s changes. However, change hasn
t occurred yet. The American copyright law only gets more controversial as it butts its way in. There is
now a three way skirmish between creators, large corporations and legislature for a simple reason. It is
preventing creative freedom and distribution of content online. The American copyright law is
ironically limiting much of this generation s creativity by preventing exposure, criminalizing the
wrong people and letting others take advantages of its own loopholes.
To provide some background information, the creation of American copyright law dates back to the
beginnings of the constitution of the United States. That is, the Copyright law was intended to
promote science and useful arts by giving the author the right of protection from copy theft (art. I, sec
8). That means that the published work would be protected from being replicated; it cannot be used by
anybody else without permission. That being said, the law offers a way to prevent infringement:
public domain. This is material that loses protection from copyright law. When something

Walter Mitlter s Character Analysis
Walter Mitty is an average, middle aged man living a dull life, and is married to a bossy wife. He does
just about everything that Mrs. Mitty tells him to do, except see Dr. Renshaw; and because of all this,
Walter often daydreams about the more exciting lives that he could have possibly lived. These
daydreams become so elaborate that Walter is very easily distracted and does not communicate with
other people very well.
Walter s boring life leads him to become highly imaginative, though he grows more anti social at the
same time. All of this does not help him create bonds with anyone or feel as needed as he wants to be.
Walter s mundane life starts off with his wife telling him what he needs to do and go get. Mrs. Mitty
tells him to: slow down when he drives faster than forty kilometers per hour, to buy overshoes and
puppy biscuits, and asks why he s not wearing his driving gloves that she got for him (implying that
Walter should put them on). Knowing his wife would only be so long at the hair dresser and that she

The Interaction Of Cognitive Therapy
The Interaction to Cognitive Therapy (ICS) Study An accruing relapse of depression is hard to

major problem in the treatment of depression. However, many evidences suggest that psychological
treatments have been withdrawn to the many treatment trials that have been found in cognitive therapy

Essay On Low Voter Turnout
It is often argued that the voter turnout is too low, especially when compared with turnout in other
democratic countries. There are several different factors that contribute to voter turnout in the US. It
can be expressed as a rate of the quantity of eligible voters, registered voters and the populace that is
politically mature enough to vote. Low voter turnout involves lack of participation and political
disengagement due to the belief that voting for a candidate will hardly change the public policies. To
measure the number of qualified voters, the voting qualified populace turnout is used. Registered voter
turnout is used to calculate the percentage of registered voter. When measured based on age and

Texas has been reported to have the lowest number of voters in the presidential election in the US. In
2010, a survey conducted by the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at the UT at Austin revealed
that Texas ranked last in the nation in voter turnout. It is recorded to be ranked 42nd in voter
registration and 49th in the number of people who contacted public officials (amarillo). One of the
main reason for low voter turnout in Texas is legal constraints. Compared to other states, Texas is one
of the restrictive states in its voting laws regarding things such as the poll tax, women suffrage, the
white primary and restriction on military vote. Moreover, more than 4 million people in Texas live in
poverty. Education and income are important determinants of electoral participation. Therefore, low
turnout rate is inevitable when poverty rate in Texas is high. Aside from that, Texas s political culture
is one of the main reason that contributes to low voter turnout.Texas is a mix of the traditionalistic and
individualistic. Their political values and belief discourage participation (Maxwell). Many Texan
believe that their vote plays a little role in politics. Texas keeps on passing laws that discourage
participation and cooperation. Overall, the absence of political will serves to exhaust the voting energy

Evaluate The Passage Of Time
As historians evaluate the passage of time, it is necessary to place various markers that signify a
change. In geologic history, these markers can be found in rock layers and often indicate a large
extinction event. In sports history, the markers can be set by equipment or by participants and
demonstrate a notable change in the way a game is played. In human history, specifically recent
human history, the markers of momentous change are usually difficult to quantify. Rarely can a
historian look back at one time or event and claim that it was important. The best that historians can
do is break up human history into generations, or segments of time in which people were exposed to
similar forces. The generations can last few or many years, and ... Show more content on

Changes in Economy in Relation to Price and Sales
With the beginning of the collapse of the housing boom in 2006, Florida slipped into approximately
six years of nearly flat or negative growth within its economy. The dramatic decrease in condo prices
anticipated the overall housing boom by a year and a half to two years. This makes sense because
housing is a necessity, but luxury items such as condos are the first to go in economic crisis. The job
and consumption growth slowed down as consumers saw rising debt payments on the record debt
build up in the previous years. As a result, the debt squeeze left less money available for key
household expenditures and housing in general and pushed many families over the edge with rising
loan defaults and foreclosures.

Analysis Of Death On The Pale Horse
This paper is going to analyze the context within which the work of art, Death on the Pale Horse was
created. In addition, the paper will also discuss the medium that the artist selected and highlight a
number of the other fascinating aspects of this Benjamin West painting.
Benjamin West first displayed his work of art in 1784 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in
conjunction with three different works that he had planned to paint. The artist used oil on canvas as his
final medium and the painting measures twenty three by fifty inches. It is signed within the lower right

The style that West used is described best through his choice of colors that are very warm, and thus, in
all probability influenced other painters who were part of the Romantic era of the Nineteenth Century.
What is distinctive regarding this specific painting is that it merges art with recreation. The theme is
deep as a result of the many things that are happening within the background and the foreground. As
an example, there are bodies with garments ripped of from the battle and a fallen horse at the front
center of the painting; however, the background also contains many winged demons and murderers
who ride in from some distant place.
As for the forms within the painting, they are realistic, and never flat. The horses are spherical and
appear to be very strong; the lion s claws are immense and tear blood from the flesh of the person the
lion attacks. The forms are well accomplished and reinforce the drama of the scene, which the artist
meant to depict. All of the shapes are meant to be full to provide weight and seriousness to the piece.
None of the forms are lightweight or ethereal, even the clouds are giant and full. Most of the figures
have significant shadowing and strips of highlight to deepen the distinction between the dark and
lightweight colors.
With reference to the lines within the painting, every figure within the painting, including all of the
ghosts that float in from heaven, are well carved. The lines are harsh

This intermingling of cultures and social differences causes a change in the attitudes and outlooks of
society. The levelling up of living standards in our economy has created a greater sense of human
dignity and freedom replacing an earlier and traditional view of inferiority. Opportunities for
education, leading to promotion at work are richer and more varied. Universal education has enhanced

Not only does this diversity benefit social purposes but it also has certain national purposes. National

efficiency throughout the education system, due to high levels of mobility between different European

  • 3. Analysis Of A Gentleman s Life Tristam Shandy, A Gentleman s Life Tristam Shandy is the narrator of his own life story. The narrative is similar to an autobiographic account of his life, but the narrative goes farther than that. It examines his philosophy, provides a glimpse into the standards and ideals of the early 1700s. The work provides an interesting perspective on the life of a noble man of his time, At times the narration is humorous. Shandy cannot explain anything simply, but must embellish the tale with long explanations that wander in and out of the original topic, eventually arriving at the destination. Shandy uses the piece to rationalize the misfortunes of his life and to try to find meaning in his personal tragedies. This essay will explore Shandy s explanations of conception, birth, christening, accidental circumcision, and other circumstances about his own birth. It supports the thesis that Shandy presents his story because he feels he must rationalize how the philosophy of his father shaped his own opinions. At the time of Shandy s conception, it was believed that a traumatic experience or energy out of alignment could affect the mental and physical traits of a child, and that this imbalance would be present throughout their entire life. When Shandy was conceived, at the very moment of his conception, his mother asked his father an off topic question that annoyed and distracted his father, throwing the act out of balance and setting Shandy up for a life of mishaps and maladies. • 5. Pso Algorithm Is Developed By The Social Behavior Patterns... 3.3 PSO PSO algorithm is developed by the social behavior patterns of the organisms that exist and interact within large groups. As, it converges at a faster rate than the global optimization algorithms, the PSO algorithm is applied for solving various optimization problems easily. In the PSO technique, a population called as a swarm of candidate solutions are encoded as particles in the search space. Initially, PSO begins with the random initialization of the population. These particles move iteratively through the D dimensional search space to search the optimal solutions, by updating the position of each particle. During the movement of the swarm, a vector Xi=(Xi1, Xi2,...., XiD) represents the current position of the particle i . Vi=(Vi1, Vi2,...., ViD) represents the velocity of the particle which is in the range of [−vmax, vmax]. The best previous position of a particle is denoted as personal best Pbest. The global best position obtained by the population is denoted as Gbest. The PSO searches for the optimal solution by updating the velocity and position of each particle, based on the Pbest and Gbest. The next position of the particle in the search space is calculated by using the new velocity value. This process is repeated for a fixed number of times or until a minimum error is achieved. The rate of the change in the velocity and position of the particle is given as v_id=v_id+c_1 r_1 (p_id x_id )+c_2 r_2 (p_gd x_id ) (3.1) x_id=x_id+v_id (3.2) Where c_1 ... • 8. Value Of Studying History Essay What is the value, if any, of studying history? It is often claimed that the value of studying history is that it allows us to make decisions and predictions regarding the present and future based on the mistakes of the past. Indeed, Edmund Burke stated as early as 1790 that In history, a great volume is unrolled for our instruction, drawing the materials of future wisdom from the past errors and infirmities of mankind. 1 However, in this essay I will show that this is not necessarily the case, and will argue instead that the value of history is that it allows us to frame our present in the context of the past, and therefore better understand ourselves as a species and as a society. To illustrate this I will be using the examples of the 2008 financial crisis in relation to the UK housing market, and the current conflict in Afghanistan in relation to previous wars in that country. The UK housing market has long been renowned for being intrinsically volatile 2. As seen in the graph below, since the early 1970s it has experienced four distinct periods of boom and bust which are marked each time by an increase in consumer credit (blue line M4).3 This graph clearly shows that each ...bust followed an unsustainable credit induced boom. 4 Therefore I would argue that lessons from history have not been learned in this case as the cycle of boom and bust has been repeated four times already and will most likely continue ad infinitum, despite numerous economists5 and ... Comparing Hasker And The Star Trek Upon reading both Hasker and the Star Trek synopsis, I have come to the conclusion that Picard and Maddox exhibited different views of Data and because of this difference in beliefs tension is felt throughout their arguments. To begin, I feel the mind/body problem exhibited by Picard is one of a materialistic view which states, Man is a wholly material being (Hasker, P. 69). Throughout Picard s argument he repeatedly echoes Data s use of the word my in respect to Data s rights, freedoms and choices and asserts the idea that Data is comprised of a brain and body working together forming both ideas and emotions.
