This document outlines the sections and criteria to consider for a quantitative research study critique. The critique should include an introduction naming the study and previewing the critique structure. The body will evaluate the title and authors' credibility, literature review, research strategy and design, and threats to internal validity. It will conclude by connecting the study to social work practice and assessing if it can safely inform the reviewer's practice.
The Introduction chapter of the Case Study Summary report presents shortly the history of the Alternative work development also called New Ways of Working a.k.a NewWoW. The effect of enablers usually classified as Technological, Physical and Social are in the main focus.
Objectives are 1) perform three complementary approaches of enablers, concept and future of the organization using the same consultative process to engage work practices 2) find quantitative information of the aspects (what?) of the work environment affecting to personal life using a survey 3) find out qualitative information of “How aspects of the social environment enhance or disrupt Knowledge Work – on individual, team, organizational, societal levels. Why?” using focus group discussions in the same three organizations.
The first part of the report is describing the companies (VTT, Granlund and ISS) change plans and the target setting. The Optimaze engagement methodology and the results are described for the three organizations cases. The key work practices in three organizations have remarkable similarities: the need for communication, coordination, sharing, being with customers/partners/colleagues etc.
The second part describes a survey of totally 255 persons in three organizations addressing question “What factors of the social environment enhance or disrupt Knowledge Work?”. The SPSS™ statistical program was used to analyse the survey data. The differences between the Granlund, ISS and VTT in survey response patterns reflected mainly the fact that they are different type of organizations.
The third part describes the preparation, execution and the data analysis of the Focus group interviews. The transcripts were content coded both manually and by Atlas.ti, a software package for qualitative data analysis. The overall impression from the group discussion is that that most of the participants cared deeply about are issues that personally affect them or their close colleagues. The drivers for Job Crafting arise from three personal needs. Firstly to exert some control over the job to avoid alienation, secondly to build a positive self-image, and thirdly to connect with others. The three aforementioned needs echo the basic psychological needs of Self-Determination Theory: namely Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness.

With a clear purpose in place, quantitative researchers have a roadmap for crafting their research questions and hypotheses that will further focus the approach they will take to investigate their topic (i.e., their study’s research design).
The selection of a research design is guided by the study’s purpose and research questions and hypotheses, and the design then links the research questions and hypotheses to the data that will be collected. You should keep in mind, however, that the research process is interactive, not necessarily proceeding in a linear fashion from one component to the next. Rather, the writing of research questions could, for example, necessitate adjustments to the study’s purpose statement.
Nevertheless, when presented together, the various components of a research study should align. As you learned last week, alignment means that a research study possesses clear and logical connections among all of its various components.
In addition to considering alignment, when researchers select a research design, they must also consider the ethical implications of their choice, including, for example, what their design selection means for participant recruitment, procedures, and privacy.

You will write an article review, relevant to this week's learning module and readings. You will select the article yourself by searching the UWA Library Databases. The article you choose should be a research article (has a hypothesis that is empirically tested). Pick an article relevant to a topic covered in the weekly readings. Each review is worth 20 points.  The review should be 1-2 single-spaced pages in a 12-point font. It is in your best interest to submit your review before it is due so you may check your originality report and correct any spelling and grammatical errors identified by the software program.
The purpose of the review is to provide students knowledge of how research is conducted and reported. The main part of your review needs to include the following information. Please comment on these aspects of the article as part of your review. Provide only the briefest summary of content. What I am most interested in is your critique and connection to weekly readings.
Reference. Listed at the top of the paper in APA style.
Introduction. Read the introduction carefully. The introduction should contain:
· A thorough literature review that establishes the nature of the problem to be addressed in the present study (the literature review is specific to the problem)
· The literature review is current (generally, articles within the past 5 years)
· A logical sequence from what we know (the literature review) to what we don't know (the unanswered questions raised by the review and what this study intended to answer
· The purpose of the present study
· The specific hypotheses/research questions to be addressed.
· State the overall purpose of the paper. What was the main theme of the paper?
· What new ideas or information were communicated in the paper?
· Why was it important to publish these ideas?
Methods. The methods section has three subsections. The methods sections should contain:
· The participants and the population they are intended to represent (are they described as well in terms of relevant demographic characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, education level, income level, etc?).
· The number of participants and how the participants were selected for the study
· A description of the tools/measures used and research design employed.
· A detailed description of the procedures of the study including participant instructions and whether incentives were given.
Results. The results section should contain a very thorough summary of results of all analyses. This section should include:
· Specific demographic characteristics of the sample
· A thorough narrative description of the results of all statistical tests that addressed specific hypotheses
· If there are tables and figures, are they also described in the text?

that captures relevant theories and empirical research leading to a significant synthesis and analysis of week 4 annotations (you may also include any other annotations that are relevant from weeks 1 and 2). Within your research paper you should seek to categorize, synthesize, and analyze theme (or themes) in the reviewed literature around the topic of leadership. Approach your topic as though you were arguing for funding which might support a vital new step in understanding the changing face of global leadership. While you do not have to actually design a study to the point of specifying research measures of intercultural leader and group behaviors or specify samples, try to evolve your thinking to the point of framing a relevant research topic, problem and question(s) for research to address. This question should be complete enough to suggest why the answers obtained further develop an important theory, address a gap in current models of global and multicultural leadership, or demonstrate an immediate application to solving common organizational problems. Rather than attempting to include as many references as possible, try to emphasize the logical coherence of your evidence of conceptual foundations. Build a rhetorical argument for why your research problem and question(s) are important. An obvious extension of your paper would be to consider using it as a springboard for a dissertation proposal. Your paper could also be useful for the development of Chapter 2 of your Proposal/Dissertation.
Your literature review should include the following elements:
Adherence to APA format (6th Edition), which requires a title page, an abstract, a reference list, and appropriate sections and their headings.
A thorough review of the literature that shows evidence of a potential research opportunity or gap.
Presentation of a clearly defined gap in the research, with a focus on what has and has not been discussed in the academic literature.
The definition of a viable topic for dissertation research (using the aforementioned identified gap as a basis).
A draft problem statement included in your conclusion section.
At least one research question that is demonstrably linked to your problem statement. You do not need to address any hypotheses or design considerations and should include this question in your conclusion section.

This is the first page of the body of your paper. The full title of your paper is repeated at the top of the page. Like with the abstract, the title at the top of the page is not bold since it is not considered a heading within the paper. You will see below that headings within the paper are in bold and follow the heading styles required by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.; American Psychological Association, 2009).
This first section of your paper is the introduction of your paper. It is not labeled separately. It introduces the topic of your paper and the points you intend to make. Why is this topic important to psychology? This section also introduces how your paper will be organized, such as stating that you will review the historical background of the topic and then follow it with an overview of related current trends and discussion.
To summarize the introduction needs to be one to two pages in length. The introduction provides a brief overview of what will be covered and the purpose of the research paper.
Literature Review
This is the beginning of your literature review. Keep in mind, the literature review is not just a summary of each individual article. It is also a critical analysis of your topic supported by information you learned when reading the background literature. Your APA formatted citations for the sources of the information you are discussing is your indication of the literature reviewed.
This section will give an overview of the history of your topic and the theories being covered. It will discuss where the theories came from and how they have evolved over time. Depending on your topic, it may include comparisons and contrasts between the historical theories you are covering.
To summarize the literature review is taken in part from what you wrote in Week 3 Assignment 2. It should include at the very minimum the 6 articles that you found for that assignment. The literature review is not a copy of that material. Rather, it is a synthesis of the material you found into a cohesive review of the literature on your chosen topic.

What causes people to be drawn to one another? What happens when one experiences rejection? Human beings are wired for relationships. Unlike some species that do not organize socially, such as koalas and jaguars, humans need relationships. We are what Baumeister and Bushman refer to as cultural animals, immersing ourselves within social groups. Humans engage in relationships of all kinds from family, acquaintances and friends, to romantic partners. Belonging is a basic human need (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014).

Overview
There are two final projects in this course. One is an article review and the other is a data analysis.
Regardless of their field of interest, health professionals across disciplines need to be able to analyze and use biostatistical data to address health concerns
among the populations they serve. They need to be able to identify trends, draw conclusions, and make recommendations for improving health outcomes based
on solid evidence. It is also important that they are able to communicate that information effectively to those directly or indirectly impacted. They also need to
understand what others are doing in their field, the strengths and limitations of that work, and how it affects their own organization, even if they do not intend
to become statisticians.
The two summative assessments for this course lay the foundation for these critical skills. Final Project Article Review asks you to evaluate the strengths and
limitations of existing biostatistical articles and to identify the selection process of appropriate methodologies in different contexts (Final Project Article Review).
You will present your analysis through a written executive summary geared toward an audience of fellow health professionals. In the Final Project Data Analysis,
you will calculate descriptive and inferential statistics of a small data set. You will explain the basic parameters of the data, graph it, and run simple hypothesis
tests. You will present your analysis in a statistical report geared toward a non-technical audience, draw conclusions, and make recommendations for further
research.
For your Final Project Article Review, you will review and analyze published research that you might encounter as a health professional. You will select two
journal articles from the provided list on a topic of interest. You will create an article review that identifies the articles and their relevance to your field;
summarizes the articles, including their findings; compares and contrasts the statistical methods used in the articles; explains why the methods used were
appropriate; discusses their limitations; and concludes with recommendations for future work.
Final Project Article Review is divided into three journals, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality

Having not taken a test like this in quite some time, I was anxious to see how the 10 years in a management role may have affected my results.
The assessment showed I have a blend of both Dominant and Inspiring traits. My Dominant traits are probably a little stronger than my Inspiring traits. Some words that describe me are: Directive, Decisive, Driven and Interactive. I am task-oriented, and probably get a great deal done. I probably like problem solving and getting results. I am comfortable interacting with others to make things happen.
These results describe me to a T. In my former role, I managed a group of 12 people who supported the efforts of a National Accounts sales team for a large packaging company. We supported a sales portfolio of almost $2billion and dealt with multiple priorities and deadlines almost daily.
I come from a very small town mid-westerner background (high school graduating class of 98 -- that's people, not the year), so I can communicate with people from all walks of life. I was the only person in the office who knew the cleaning crew by name, yet the CEO knew mine. My dad was an iron worker and my mom a homemaker, but they owned several small businesses when I was growing up, so I guess I get my business sense from being raised in that type of environment.
I'm intrigued by what makes people "tick" and I think that helps me interact with people with other leadership styles. My style is very direct (obviously), but I have had the most success leading and managing people because I treat people how I want to be treated and I don't expect anyone to do anything I wouldn't do.
My leadership style served me well for 10 years after which time the company I worked for was bought by another company. The new company had different business philosophies, which included all employees being in Atlanta, with less experience, working for less money, so my department and I were laid off.
I am employed again, but not in a management role, and I struggle with the management and leaders as their style is quite different from mine and my prior boss. I have never encountered so many people who are miserable at their job, so I'm anxious to see what I can learn from this course.............jane

On the test, I received a 1.54, which apparently seemed to be the average for the MBA students. I feel that I am actually quite tolerant to change in my current position as a manager. I have to be open to changes on a daily basis because it is a way of life in the corporate environment. As Yukl states, "Relevant competencies identified in more recent research include emotional intelligence, social intelligence, systems thinking, and the ability to learn and adapt to change" (2006, pg. 209). It's important to be able to handle change with acceptance and grace, and try to stay positive. That is how I stay comfortable with change in as a leader and follower, look at it in a way that is positive and feel that I will only grow and learn from the situation. If there were no changes, life would be boring. :) Each day is a new adventure so try to see everything as a good thing even if it seems a bit scary.

I am not a born leader. I fall short to the take charge attitude of dominance. I do not have a dominating presence and I tend to shy away from being the center of attention. I would rather be someone's right hand man. I am the Robin to Batman or the Louis Lane to Superman. However, I strive on being a supportive follower that works hard, has a positive attitude, and is the support system for the leader. I have never sight out a leadership position, but I enjoy doing work that carries great importance and helps out the organization.
The readings this week and last week makes me think about the different aspects of my personality and some of the qualities that are considered leadership. According to our readings, "Leadership is realized in the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement" (Yukl, 2006, P.3). Even though a person is not in a direct leadership position or prefers to stay out of the lime light, they can still influence people by their attitudes, work ethic, and loyalty to the company. It does not take a person to be in a leadership position to show leadership qualities.
In conclusion, I am not a born leader, but I show certain qualities that reflect leadership. I would rather be someone's sidekick and help them guide and influence the organization to success. Dominance is not a strength of mine and because of that I find it hard to take charge and be the boss.

Participative leadership involves efforts by a leader to encourage and facilitate participation by others in making important decisions" (Yukl, 2006, p. 82). I think participative leadership is important because it involves an entire team, and it shows the value of others ideas and creates leadership opportunities. I think this type of leadership is most effective when there has been a steady track record of the leader following through with the thoughts of others. When a leader truly wants what is best for the company, and they can see beyond themselves. Participative leadership can effective as well as ineffective.
An effective example of participative leadership would be an employee owned company or volunteer projects. On the test, I received a 1.54, which apparently seemed to be the average for the MBA students. I feel that I am actually quite tolerant to change in my current position as a manager. I have to be open to changes on a daily basis because it is a way of life in the corporate environment. As Yukl states, "Relevant competencies identified in more recent research include emotional intelligence, social intelligence, systems thinking, and the ability to learn and adapt to change" (2006, pg. 209). It's important to be able to handle change with acceptance and grace, and try to stay positive. That is how I stay comfortable with change in as a leader and follower, look at it in a way that is positive and feel that I will only grow and learn from the situation. If there were no changes, life would be boring. :) Each day is a new adventure so try to see everything as a good thing even if it seems a bit scary.

In 1990, Enron—which was just a natural gas transportation company at the time—started a new division to trade natural gas. The company went from being a “stodgy” gas pipeline company to being a “world-class” company overnight. Enron soon became a $55 billion empire, trading gas, electricity, minerals, water, paper and broadband capacity.
A critical part of Enron’s success was the company’s employee value proposition (EVP). The EVP focused on Enron as a dealmaker and was designed to attract the top talent the company needed to continue to move it forward. The EVP provided employees with the opportunity to do something “big” and to change how business was done in other industries. Jobs were restructured to give employees a lot of elbow room and headroom. Traditional gas pipeline employees were not the employees needed for this new, never-before-tried venture. Internal job movements at Enron were an important part of the EVP. Managers were strongly encouraged to allow employees to move within the company. The goal was to not hold anyone back. When the Global Broadband unit was launched, 100 top performers from around the company were brought together in Houston. By the end of the day, 50 had been recruited for the new project. Overall, the recruiting strategy focusing on internal recruitment paid off. The business continued to grow and attract entrepreneurial employees.
The company that thought it had nowhere to go but up came crashing down in 2001, when it was charged with illegal activities. By 2004, Enron’s corporate officers faced numerous charges of wrongdoing, and the company was a shell of its former self. Managers were charged with manufacturing profits, hiding debt, and bullying Wall Street to buy into its questionable accounting and investment practices. An extensive amount of downsizing had occurred, and many employees had lost all of their retirement savings after Enron’s stock collapsed. Faced with bankruptcy and a sullied reputation, the company struggled to continue but finally made the decision to cease to exist once all litigation concludes.

Whenever new discoveries force scientists to reconsider their hypotheses, theories and data, they do just that. This is why people think of science as a collection of concepts that are always being revised.
This holds true for the basic building block concepts within science as well. The cell is a perfect example of this: in the mid-1600s, Robert Hooke used one of the very first microscopes to examine thin slices of cork. When he saw that the cork plant was made up of tiny box-shaped pieces, he gave science the concept of the cell. For 100 years, people thought of the cell as the smallest thing inside all living creatures. But then, in 1781, Felice Fontana spotted something even smaller inside the cells from an eel: the nucleolus. This discovery made people rethink the idea that cells were the tiniest things inside living creatures. Clearly, there were even smaller things inside cells.

This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
