For my final project I am choosing the environmental influences on.docxrhetttrevannion
For my final project I am choosing the environmental influences on personality particularly about childhood experiences and their effect on an individual’s personalities. I am contrasting childhood experiences that are caused by their environment to the effect on their personality, I will use the correlation research method. A questionnaire will be used in order to obtain the information I would need. This method would admit me to have a larger sample base, have a better image of the relationship, and numerous variables providing for better research circumstances down the road. The disadvantage to this technique would be, I would not have a personal relationship from those apart of the study and this could cause a lack of dishonesty. Second, establishing a questionnaire that was both dependable and accurate could be an issue. Lastly, I would only get a view at what those in the group went through.
Ethically, I would run into a problem of confidentiality and making sure all of the questionnaires were kept secret and those taking them were offered secrecy. Anyone who take part in the activity would be able to eliminate themselves from the research if they wanted to and if they left the documents it would be destroyed. I would maintain their best interest and would be real and honest with them regarding what the study is being used for and why it was being done. Still, because there isn’t a personal relationship but just general on this could be difficult to prove and cause doubt and that could be an ethical crisis.

The theme chosen is Qualitative and quantitative change. During child development, there are both qualitative and quantitative differences. Qualitative differences describe the changes in the way a child behave, think and perceive the world in a different way as they mature. An excellent example of this is that when the child is young, it is difficult for them to understand the perspective of others. As the child gets old, they are in a position to view things from other people’s angles. On the other hand, quantitative change refers to the change that a child undergoes as they gain more knowledge and grow larger and stronger physically. Good examples are the growth of the height and weight (Battles, Lindenberger, & M, 1998).
There are various controversies regarding this theme. The debate comes in when explaining development occurs qualitatively or quantitatively. The dynamic system theory (DST) is one of the approaches which has been used to justify the issue. DST defines qualitative framework by showing the connection between continuous and qualitative change. The method describes that the growth cannot be predicted by looking or observing a system. The other way is through analyzing growth based on the different theories. However. DST is the conventional approach (Battles, Lindenberger, & M, 1998).
There are various theories associated with the approaches analyzed. Most of the stage theories lie on the assumption that lifespan development is a discontinuous process which involves distinct stages that are characterized by qualitative differences in the behavior. Some of the methods include the Piaget’s approach and the Erickson’s stages of physiological development. Piaget’s theory describes qualitative development since it discusses the development of human intelligence. Piaget explains about cognitive development. Erickson explains about psychological development of human beings, and thus his line is nearly the same as that of Piaget. The article used was appropriate for the analysis. It is, however, an aged article but with useful information.

The methodical approach that is applied in understanding self-esteem is empirical research. Many controversial debates have been done to understand the concept and truth about self-esteem. Many people just get around the fact that self-esteem can influence the ability of the children to study and succeed in education (Franck, 2007). Other people just claim with the new hypothesis that has been drawn from the research conclusions of the studies that have been done so far about self-esteem (Govier, 2013). Comment by Gregory G. Bolich: This is an interesting start though the sentence doesn’t actually say much. Still, it works. Comment by Gregory G. Bolich: Okay. This additional material helps create a stronger introduction.
However, in getting the results of self-esteem, research can be done by both qualitative and quantitative methods (Govier, 2013). These methods of research can be applied in trying to understand self-esteem where the experiments that ask the respondents how favorably they can regard themselves. Questionnaires are used to collect data in this case that have questions that ask the respondents to agree or not agree with statements such as “I feel I can make it in life.” Comment by Gregory G. Bolich: Yes, but . . . what are these different approaches about? Comment by Gregory G. Bolich: You offer a couple of examples but don’t pair wither experiments or questionnaires with either approach.
The statements are directed to the fact that self-esteem is based on what the subjects says about themselves and it worthwhile to note that self-report measures are rather problematic(Franck, 2007). Sometimes they can tell us about someone’s wishes but not their real status. However, since the other methods that have been suggested to understand self-esteem are yet to be empirically validated, the only addition method is an analysis of other research that has been done by other researchers. There is experimental research that has been done so far on the impact and the working of self-esteem and variables that influence this change can provide very interesting resources. The resources that will be required will be a list of questionnaires, respondents and around a period of one month to gather data that has been collected through research (Franck, 2007). What causes people to be drawn to one another? What happens when one experiences rejection? Human beings are wired for relationships. Unlike some species that do not organize socially, such as koalas and jaguars, humans need relationships. We are what Baumeister and Bushman refer to as cultural animals, immersing ourselves within social groups. Humans engage in relationships of all kinds from family, acquaintances and friends, to romantic partners. Belonging is a basic human need (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014).

Unlike some species that do not organize socially, such as koalas and jaguars, humans need relationships. We are what Baumeister and Bushman refer to as cultural animals, immersing ourselves within social groups. In Unit 7, we will explore the basic tenets of narrative therapy. The work of Michael White and David Epston discussed metaphors associated with narrative and social constructionism. These ideas revolve around the premise that narrative therapy is more of an attitude regarding reality in a therapeutic context. Some of the ideas posited by this approach to therapy are that realities are socially constructed, realities are constituted through language, realities are organized and maintained through narrative, and there are no essential truths (Freedman & Combs, 1996). Narrative therapy is also concerned with how we perceive the world and how we operate in the world. The issue is that we are born into a world that has a way of viewing, understanding, and accepting all of its basic "truths." As such, we often find ourselves experiencing our ideas in the context of a dominant social culture. The therapist assists the "patient" in reassessing the "truths" and socially constructed realities in his or her everyday experience. Listening to the "patient's'' story is an important aspect of this therapeutic approach. Helping "patients" understand how their stories can be re-authored to reflect their needs and wants is an important aspect of the narrative approach.

Proposal Paper: Introduction Instructions
The introduction section of your research proposal is the first portion of the final research Proposal Paper. The research proposal introduction must stem naturally from the topic selection assignment that was completed in Module/Week 1. Once you finalize the topic selection, the introduction must be drafted using the bibliography as a starting point. The introduction must be no more than 2 pagesand must include at least 5 citations and references from peer-reviewed literature in current APA format. The purpose of the introduction is to make a compelling case for the study (i.e., the research topic/question that you are proposing). Each assertion must be supported by a citation. Statistics and other data must be provided to make a compelling case for the significance of the problem. In addition, relevance to the counseling field must be established, and the introduction must include an articulation of how the proposed study fills a gap in the peer-reviewed literature. Article Review (80 points). Article review papers must include a brief summary of
the study, explanation of the results, and your opinion of the conclusions. In addition,
the paper should include relevant course material and a critique of the article’s

In Unit 7, we will explore the basic tenets of narrative therapy. The work of Michael White and David Epston discussed metaphors associated with narrative and social constructionism. These ideas revolve around the premise that narrative therapy is more of an attitude regarding reality in a therapeutic context. Some of the ideas posited by this approach to therapy are that realities are socially constructed, realities are constituted through language, realities are organized and maintained through narrative, and there are no essential truths (Freedman & Combs, 1996). Narrative therapy is also concerned with how we perceive the world and how we operate in the world. The issue is that we are born into a world that has a way of viewing, understanding, and accepting all of its basic "truths." As such, we often find ourselves experiencing our ideas in the context of a dominant social culture. The therapist assists the "patient" in reassessing the "truths" and socially constructed realities in his or her everyday experience. Listening to the "patient's'' story is an important aspect of this therapeutic approach. Helping "patients" understand how their stories can be re-authored to reflect their needs and wants is an important aspect of the narrative approach.

PART 1. FORMATTING
Follow these steps now to save yourself headaches later and avoid losing credit
Title a word processor file “film-template” or something. Follow the instructions in this Formatting section. For an
essay title, type “[essay title]”. For paragraph text, type a sentence and copy and paste it repeatedly until you have a
paragraph. Do the same to make another paragraph, and another, until you’re onto your second page. Do this to
make sure MS Word isn’t adding extra space between paragraphs (see below) and that you have no first page header
and the correct second page header (see below). When it’s time to write your essay, open this template file and save
it to a new name. Keep the template file for your next essay (and any future course you take with me).
Some formatting instructions below are to ensure students are meeting the same length requirement and that no
formatting deviations are disguising this fact. If I ask you to email me the word-processor copy of your essay and it
shows deviations, you will lose more credit than if you had just handed in a paper under the page minimum. If you

Course Scope:
Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (1999) “Language and communication are at the
heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are linguistically and culturally
equipped to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a
future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language…”
Our major focus is on learning to communicate appropriately in practical, culturally authentic contexts. Students
are asked, to a limited extent, to use their Spanish to engage in simple dialog and talk about themselves and
create with the language in practical ways. Students also correct peer work and in doing so, students solve
problems (and thus engage in analysis, synthesis, and evaluation).
In these courses, students gradually add to their vocabulary and communication skills, practice question- and-
answer techniques, and apply what they learn in order to communicate and solve problems in practical

LENGTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Each paper in our class is a 5-paragraph essay, plus there is a title page (=cover page) at the start and a Sources list at the end. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800-word upper limit is really a guideline—ok to go over. Just don’t ramble. To determine length, I look at the BODY of the paper only (not title page or sources list) and consider primarily the word count. (Microsoft Word makes this easy. Just select from the first line of your first paragraph to the last line of your last paragraph. The word-count is provided on the lower left by MS-Word.). [I do not go by number of pages because there are too many ways that gets fudged by margins, font size, line spacing, etc. However, fyi---Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length—add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2.]
Your paper must have a numbered list of sources at the end combined with short in-text citations to those sources in the body of the paper. Any direct quote needs both quote marks and an in-text citation to the source. Any paraphrase or summary of information from a source requires an in-text citation to that source.
Use ONLY the sources designated. If for some reason you must use additional sources, do NOT google for them—use the university library. Pages 2 and 3 below show the sources for each topic and the SWS format for listing and citing each.
In this assignment, do NOT include long quotes of 4 lines or more. The paper is too short for that. Keep any quotes short and clearly marked with quote marks and a citation. Most of the paper should be you using mostly your words while using and summarizing information from your sources, as well as commenting and developing the paper according to the instructions. TIP: Before writing your paper, brainstorm first and make a general list or outline of each paragraph and what it will include. Use the class text for examples or specific information, and jot down the page numbers where you found that information. Do the same with other sources used. This will make your writing of the paper much easier. Then, start typing a rough draft. Plan to revise and edit yourself; allot time to polish the paper before you finally submit. Abstract
Given the complexity of contemporary healthcare environments, it is vital that nurses are able to recognize and address ethical issues as they arise. Though dilemmas and challenging situations create the most obvious, dramatic risks to patients, routine nursing actions have implications for patients as well. Ethical awareness involves recognizing the ethical implications of all nursing actions. Developing ethical awareness is one way to empower nurses to act as moral agents in order to provide patients with safe and ethical care. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the concept of ethical awareness and the role it plays in patient care. Background information is provided; three everyday scenarios highlight the importance of ethical awareness in everyday nursing practice; followed by additional discussion; and strategies for heightening ethical awareness are suggested.

tion into an advantage by leverag-

this, you’ll need to avoid the possi-
ble communication and effective-
ness pitfalls and make sure you’re
making use of all the means at
your disposal to operate effectively
from a distance. Interestingly
enough, my experiences in P&G as
both a remote manager and a
remote employee have made me a
more disciplined manager.
Various situations, be it with
remote teams who work from
their homes or international
employees in different time zones,
bring unique characteristics to
which you’ll need to adjust your
management style. That said, the
basics for any manager remain the
same—you just have to do them
better. Do them well, and you’ll
have a highly energized and driven
work team. The consequences of
not doing so are twice as disas-
trous with remote teams.
What You Can Do
Let me share some of my favorite
must-do items for any remote
leader.
1. Energize your team with a
vision. To win as a team and as an
organization, it’s critical to involve
your remote group in the creation
and deployment of a common
vision. Ask yourself what your
most important breakthrough will
be, and set this as the direction
that propels your people and your
action plan. If it isn’t possible to do
this face to face, take time to have a
brainstorming forum, group chats,
and calls with video where you
come to a clear, meaningful state-
ment of the accomplishment your
team will be known for.
2. Engage them with a robust
action plan. This is probably one
of the most critical aspects of
remote leadership. Each team
member needs to feel engaged and
have a clear understanding about
what will be requested from them
or their teams, how it will be mea-
sured, and when you will expect it.
To do this well is to set a solid
foundation and clear the way for
what will come. Draft an action

The Boston Globe is a company that has been running since 1872. They are experiencing great changes due to changes in the media industry. The owner of The Boston Globe is The Boston Globe Media Partners, LLC. Now, the publisher and the owner of The Boston Globe is John Henry (The Boston Globe). Due to technological innovations, the way and how we inform ourselves is different than the past generations (ex: virtually).
The Boston Globe’s structure, human resources, political and symbolic frames activities are changing so quickly due to the new organization’s transformations and innovations. The structure of the media organizations has changed internally and externally. In relation to human resources we are going to focus on the internal and external changes as a result of the structural change. Politically and symbolically The Boston Globehas transformed, as well. Due to all the new technological innovation and other online website there has been a need to get an IT department. This IT department takes care of the online website. Poverty’s Impact on Education in America
Most evidently in America children born or brought up in poverty are faced with insignificant education, versus a child with a higher income background. I have chosen this topic for my research assignment being that an impact of poverty can affect a child’s academic accomplishments significantly. This results in them facing challenges such as lacking intellectual and literary skills. The child readiness for school is reduced by poverty because it brings forth poor physical health and motor skills, dwindles the children's ability to concentrate and remember information, reduces curiosity, attentiveness and motivation. Children from lower-income families who manage to complete high school are less likely to proceed to college. Such children end up not achieving their life goals for lack of education. The effects of poverty on education for some children present unique challenges in breaking the cycle of generational poverty. It further reduces their chances of living productive and rewarding lives.

Abstract
The authors examined the predictive relationship between the performance of job duties informed by the American School
Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and overall wellness of school counselors. We also examined the relationship
between organizational factors (i.e., Recognized ASCA Model Program, supervision, and support), the frequency of job duties
performed, and overall wellness. The results revealed a predictive relationship between some of the job duties school counselors
perform and wellness. We provide implications for school counseling practice and training programs.

Wellness, defined as a way of life that fosters “the optimum
state of health and well-being that each individual is capable of
achieving” (Myers, Sweeny, & Witmer, 2000, p. 252), is a
central foundation of the school counseling profession. The
American School Counselor Association’s ASCA Ethical Stan-
dards for School Counselors require school counselors to per-
form duties identified by the ASCA National Model (ASCA,
2012, 2016; Standard B.3.c) and to “monitor their emotional
and physical health and practice wellness to ensure optimal
professional effectiveness” (Standard B.3.f). Therefore, school
counselors must balance the dual task of supporting their stu-
dents’ academic, social/emotional, and career development
while also ensuring that their own wellness needs are being
met (ASCA, 2012, 2016; Bryant & Constantine, 2006; Limberg,

It is loved and it is hated. It is a shining example of how
good-value food can be brought to a mass market. It is a
symbol of everything that is wrong with ‘industrialized’, cap-
italist, bland, high-calorie and environmentally unfriendly
commercialism. It is the best-known and most loved fast
food brand in the world with more than 36,000 restau-
rants in 117 countries, providing jobs for 1.7 million staff
and feeding 69 million customers per day (yes, per day!).
It is part of the homogenization of individual national cul-
tures, filling the world with bland, identical, ‘cookie cutter’,
Americanized and soulless operations that dehumanize
its staff by forcing them to follow ridged and over-defined
procedures. But whether you see it as friend, foe, or a bit
of both, McDonald’s has revolutionized the food industry,
affecting the lives of both the people who produce food and
the people who eat it. It has also had its ups (mainly) and
downs (occasionally) as markets, customers and economic
circumstances change. Yet, even in the toughest times it has
always displayed remarkable resilience. What follows is a
brief (for such a large corporation) summary of its history.
Starting small
Central to the development of McDonald’s is Ray Kroc, who
by 1954 and at the age of 52 had been variously a piano
player, a paper cup salesman and a multi-mixer salesman.
He was surprised by a big order for eight multi-mixers
from a restaurant in San Bernardino, California. When
he visited the customer he found a small but successful
restaurant run by two brothers Dick and Mac McDonald.
They had opened their ‘Bar-B-Que’ restaurant 14 years

Self-enhancement techniques, particularly the better-than-
average effect, self-serving
beliefs, and downward social comparison, can positively or
negatively influence individuals to
behave a certain way in different socio-cultural contexts. These
techniques can be effective as
demonstrated by several studies because it can potentially
improve the development of your
7. self-concept and enhance self-esteem.
Self-concept is the idea that an individual can bring about who
they are based on the
actual self and imagined self (Kassin, Fein and Markus, 2017, p.
55). This can be based on one’s
experience because of the acquired knowledge one has about
themselves (Kassin, Fein &
Markus, 2017, p. 57). This can be correlated to self-esteem, the
idea that an individual may
experience a positive or a negative attitude towards oneself
based on characteristics (Kassin, Fein
& Markus, 2017, p. 76)). In other words, a person will evaluate
themselves based on how
satisfied they may be about who they are (Kassin, Fein &
Markus, 2017, p. 76). Self-concept and
self-esteem can intertwine with one another. Based on the
individual’s awareness to one’s own
self-evaluations, this may lead individuals to have a positive
self esteem in an unconscious way.
For instance, a person may experience positive self-esteem and
believes that the skills are above
and beyond people’s expectations. Kassin, Fein and Markus
(2017) explains how there are
several self-enhancement techniques to help maintain or
8. enhance their self-esteem.

The first technique includes the better-than-average effect. This
is described by the
tendency of a person to think themselves as better than average
(Kassin, Fein & Markus, 2017,
p.89). This can be a good technique, as it is a way for one’s
highly positive self criticism to be
modified in a way to boost one’s self-esteem. Kim, Kwon and
Chiu (2017) puts this mechanism
to the test, by grabbing participants to measure what their
ability in comparison to another person
that is considered average. Some of the abilities measured
included types of writing, organization
and cognitive thinking. The results indicated that the students
actually scored average or below
average, depending on how easy or difficult the ability was.
However, Kim, Kwon and Chiu still
interpret the better-than-average effect as a self-enhancement
mechanism, because the results
show that the participants interpret the word “average”
differently. therefore each ability,
9. whether easy or difficult, scored medium or a little below
medium (Kim, Kwon & Chiu, 2017).
There were three findings that supported this theory to be a
form of self-enhancement. First,
Kim, Kwon and Chiu find that the participants in each group
define the the word “average” as a
below medium score. One example that was used is when
someone criticizes a professor to be
just an average teacher. Due to this, most participants only
scored below-medium, but in their
minds, they believe that is a true definition of “average.” The
next factor is how the participants
rated the task itself. For instance, if the task given seemed easy,
this boosted their self-esteem,
scoring close to average. Lastly, Kim, Kwon and Chiu
examined the gender differences (even
though this was no intention to do so) and how most men in the
study scored slightly higher than
average on the science based abilities/skills.
The better-than-average effect also has been implied into the
Implicit Association Test
(IAT). The IAT measures on association between two things
(Kassin, Fein & Markus, 2016). In

other words, this test will view how an individual will quickly
affiliate two ideas and this
measure will determine how one is thinking in an unconscious
way (Kassin, Fein & Markus,
2016, p. 163). Howald and Ratliff (2016) experiment two types
of studies where participants will
be using the IAT to determine stereotyping and prejudice. The
first study included adult
participants taking the IAT with the category, thin people vs. fat
people (Howald & Ratliff,
2016). In order to test this theory, Howald and Ratliff changed
the wording in the questions, so
the participants would answer preferences on an individual
perspective and the world’s
perspective. For example, the participants answered in a way to
make themselves seem as they
are not discriminating in any type of way compared to the
average population. When asked what
the world prefers, the majority answered that the world prefered
thin people, and the individual’s
answered that they preferred thin people and fat people equally
(Howald & Ratliff, 2016).
11. The second study shows the similar situation, but with other
IAT tests including
stereotyping (Howald & Ratliff, 2016). One thing that was
added was an agree to disagree
question regards on how their thoughts were affected based on
the topics of the IAT (Howald &
Ratliff, 2016). This resulted that many participants showed a
slight significance in offense, which
shows how well the better-than-average theory was implied due
to the results from the IAT being
neutral and showing stereotype behavior.
Serving belief is another form of how one’s self-esteem can
boost, because a person will
attribute a scenario to favor themselves based on behavior or
cognitive thinking. Self-serving
beliefs may have a positive and negative factor. Both factors
will figure out ways to explain how
this is benefitting the self. There have been a few studies
proving how self-serving beliefs look
like (Palmeira, Spassova & Keh, 2015, p. 90). The studies
included the participants

12. (decision-makers) opinions based on whether or not advisors are
offering good or bad advice,
and being questioned who has been more responsible to taking
the advice in effect (Palmeira,
Spassova & Keh, 2015). This has been observed by surveying
both groups on questionnaires in
relation to how knowledgeable they may feel (Palmeira,
Spassova & Keh, 2015). The results turn
out that the decision makers felt that the advisors overall gave
positive advice which lead to
positive outcomes in the questionnaires, which gained the
decision makers a positive self-serving
belief in themself, although (Palmeir, Spassova & Keh, 2015).
The reason is due to the
trustworthiness in advisors which creates a boost in self-
enhancement.
Another mechanism of self-enhancement that people often
subconsciously partake in is
the downward social comparison. Downward social comparison
is defined as the defensive
tendency to compare ourselves with others who are worse off
than we are (Kassin, Fein &
Markus, 2016). More often than not, downward social
comparison is commonly used in all
13. aspects of our everyday life occurring in school, work,
volunteer organizations, and many more.
Comparing ourselves to others could potentially harm us or
encourage us to be and do better;
however, researchers demonstrated that in particular, downward
social comparison uplifts
people’s mood and shifts their perspective in life (p.93).
Social Comparison on Facebook: Motivation, affective
consequences, self-esteem, and
Facebook fatigue by Cramer, Song, and Drent focuses on
research examining individuals who
constantly and consistently participate in using social media.
Currently, millennials and future
generations are absorbing Facebook content as soon as they
wake up in the morning. Without
even realizing it, they are developing their own self-assessments
in comparison to their peers
who may seem more successful than they are. Facebook users
are able to share their life with

others by updating their status, post pictures and videos that
they may or may not spend time
14. editing, and comments.
Recent research showed that self-esteem is negatively correlated
with the time spent on
Facebook and other social media activity such as Instagram,
SnapChat, or even Twitter (Cramer
et. al, 2016). People only spend time posting exciting events or
successes on their social media -
hiking, traveling, graduating, job promotion, milestones (getting
married, buying a car, or a
home). People post what they want to post and they want others
to know, and more often times
than not, to think, that their life is incredible, and they are not
struggling. In a sense, individuals
already know what they see on social media may not always be
the true predicament of that
person’s life or character. However, they are still affected by it
and is negatively comparing
themselves to others. Helgeson and Mickelson’s (1995)
functional approach model was used in
this research which focused on motives rather than social
comparisons (upward and downward)
(Cramer, Song & Drent, 2016). When people realized that they
are comparing themselves to
others who are in a less fortunate situation than they are, they
15. use it as a learning lesson - to not
make the same mistakes they did.
In terms of social comparison regarding individuals with higher
self-esteems (HSEs),
they are more prone to partake in downward social comparison
(self-enhancement) compared to
those with lower self-esteems (Cramer, Song, & Drent, 2016).
Researchers collected data of
participants using a Likert Scale, asking them questions such as,
“Do you compare yourself to
others on Facebook”? In addition to those questions, researchers
also conducted a social
comparison perception test, motivates for social comparison,
facebook fatigue test, self-esteem,
and positive affect using the Likert Scale which ranges in
values from 1-5 (Cramer et. al, 2016).

Results show that some people may have a higher preference of
using Facebook less to increase
their self-esteem instead of participating in social comparisons.

social comparison in relation to
social media activity. Relationship social comparison
interpretations and dating relationship
quality, behaviors, and mood by Marian Morry and Tamara
Sucharyna focuses on social
comparison in dating relationships. When individuals choose
their partners, most already have a
high standard that he/she would have to meet. They would have
to fulfill the “lists” that would
make them a great partner. People often compare their own
relationships in relation to their
friend’s relationship with their partners. Focusing on downward
social comparison, individuals
may overprioritze or overexemply their own relationship in
order to make themselves feel better
about what they may be going through. Morry and Tamara states
that social comparisons are one
source of information individuals use to make sense of their
relationships (p. 554).
After an upward or downward social comparison, people must
interpret what they want to
do with their relationship - hope for the future or realizing that
their relationship is not going
17. anywhere. Researchers created a Relationship Social
Comparison Interpretation Scale (RSCI) to
further understand the interpretations and correlations with
relationship quality, self-reported
behaviors, and mood (Morry and Tamara, 2016). According to
the article, people only partake in
any form of social comparison when they are unsure, stressed,
or unsatisfied with their current
relationship. Participants (N = 206) around the age of 21 years
old who are in a relationship with
their partner for at least 37 months were randomly assigned to
make an upward or downward
social comparison to their friend’s relationships. Qualtrics, an
online assessment, collected the

participant’s results. Using these results to differentiate
between secure and insecure individuals,
people interpret their comparisons differently depending on the
social contexts. The three self
enhancement techniques: better-than-average effect, self-
serving beliefs, and downward social
comparison are a few of the many ways individuals are
18. influenced to change in behavior. Studies
have been proven how effective these techniques work. One
thing to come to mind is how this
may work both consciously and unconsciously, in order to help
enhance or maintain self-esteem.
