An argumentative essay takes a position on an issue and argues for that position using evidence from sources and logical reasoning to
support the position. It is one of the most common forms of writing anywhere, and you will use it extensively in college.
Read: Chapter 10 on Argument, and review Chapter 26 on using sources in writing.
The first thing to do is pick a topic and develop a research plan. A research plan worksheet is available on eLearn. Once you pick a
topic that interests you, list questions concerning the issue that you are interested in answering. Once you develop a list of research
questions, then pick a single question to respond to in your paper. Your paper is the answer to the question.
A research question must have at least 2 reasonable, supportable answers. In other words, someone must be able to reasonably
disagree with you.
Once you develop your research question, then you do the research (annotated bibliography) to gather information in order to answer
your question and support your position on the topic.
We will discuss paper organization and source use in class after the annotated bibliography is complete.
III. Presentation (50 points, 4/28 or 4/30)
You will give a brief presentation of your paper on one of the presentation days the last week of class (we will sign up for these times
in the coming weeks). Your presentation should be brief, 3-5 minutes and should include a Power Point type of visual aid that

The Personal Career Plan Paper should be between 15 and 25 pages in length (including Appendices). Higher quality papers are typically longer and more comprehensive than passing, but lower quality papers. The Personal Career Plan should integrate and extend your learning and thinking as developed throughout the course, but particularly through the completion of the reading and various Career Action exercises in the Coursepack/DML text, as manifest ideally by including both the complete CA exercises (templates on Moodle) in the Appendix, and an analysis of their implications in the narrative. That is to say, this paper should reflect the insights, recommendations and concepts presented in this text. In addition, as specified below, the contents of homework assignments should be integrated into the paper.
While it is possible to earn a passing grade on this paper with a minimal inclusion of the Career Action material, papers aiming for the grade of “A” should explicitly integrate and/or include as much of that material as possible.
Specific recommendations for which material to include are provided below.
The paper should be professionally written, word-processed, and ideally, printed on a high quality laser or ink-jet printer, presented in an appropriate professional binding of an appropriate size (NOT a three ring binder!). All pages should be numbered, and a Table of Contents based upon appropriate headings and subheadings, (including those specified below), should be used. In addition, personally tailored introduction and conclusion sections should be employed, depending upon the contents of the individual paper.

CM 533: THEORY AND PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION SPRING 2021 SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION MASTERS STUDIES PROGRAM Part 2 Paper: Each student will select an article from a field other than communication/mass communication, and will write a report that states what are the (a) concepts at the center of the study, (b) theory that incorporates the con- cepts (and, perhaps, other concepts), and (c) related paradigm that overarches the concept and the theory (and, even, others).
