Being a Digital Do-Gooder (IxDA Berlin Event #53)Clive K. Lavery
As digital designers we are constantly being told that we have the power to change the world.
But other than repeating this over and over again in our comfortable bubble of tech meetups, conferences or self centred documentaries how many of us actually use our perceived super powers for something more than making rich companies richer, selling more shoes online or creating something like "Uber for coat hangers"?
In my talk at the IxDA Berlin Event in September 2016 I will look at examples of applied digital do-goodism and discuss some strategies for how we can use our UX and design skills for social good.
Slides may contain traces of half baked philosophy, social romanticism, self guilt and hopefully inspiration.

Participative design, or co-creation, can be a game changer.
The UX industry is evolving and so should evolve the tools and the approaches that allow professionals to deliver meaningful and valuable experiences.
Participative design has been around since the '70s - and the raise of a collaborative culture enhanced by technology are quickly changing the way users and customers engage and communicate with brands, organisations, and companies.
How and why companies should consider a participative approach?

12 Lessons on Advertising 101 From an Architect Alex Goh
(This is Part 1 of 4)
Note: I'm not an Architect.
Content within this deck was discovered on a trip to Athens, Greece where I stayed at the home of an architect. Amongst the hundreds of books he had, I chanced upon this gem - "Letter to a Young Architect" - which I've collated and will share with you here.
Contained within that book was the author's life learnings, to be handed down to future architects. But what surprised me was that, on every page, each of those learnings could be directly applied to advertising as well. And such good lessons they were that I felt compelled to keep a record of those lessons, for my own learning and to share with others.
Hope it's as eye-opening for you as it was for me. Enjoy!

Ulla Jones & Tuomas Manninen: Uncharted Territory of Strategic DesignService Design Network
OP Financial Group (OP) has worked long and consistently on building a design maturity that includes an internal design team and customer-centric design culture. Eventually it became necessary to separate strategic design from operational design so that design needs would be met at all levels. OP has entered the unchartered territory of strategic design, the most advanced level of design according to 'Danish Design Ladder'. We will examine the team's competence structure to illustrate what skills and experiences were identified as necessary to work successfully. We will show through case studies how changing the company culture builds the internal understanding of design's value and how this in turn grows the demand to involve designers at the strategic level.

A traditional client-to-service provider work relationship is predicated on a hierarchy in which the needs and wishes of the client take precedence over all other considerations. In a rapidly paced work world under the increasing influence of accelerated technological change, such a traditional approach can have detrimental effects on the wellbeing of employees. The question with which service providers today must grapple is: How can we maintain our customer focus and ensure continued customer satisfaction while at the same time protecting the wellbeing of our team members?
The concept of “New Work” offers several suggestions for how to reconcile these seemingly competing needs. New Work encompasses a wealth of theories and methods relating to the organization of work, from self-organization to agility and modern leadership, to new work spaces, among many others. In this talk, we focus on our experience with implementing one such concept.

Aviation is a very challenging industry as it acts on the complex intersection of technology, regulations, competing commercial organizations and environmental concerns. KLM, the royal Dutch airline, can proudly look back on 100 years of history in aviation. They anticipated that the next 100 years will require a new way of innovating, with more impact. KLM is convinced that design is a key ingredient in this shift. In 2019, KLM developed and kicked off a program, in collaboration with Livework, that combines design training, coaching on the job, and impact measurement. The program sets out to empower employees across departments to use a design as a means to increase collaboration, process efficiency, solution adoption and informed decision making. As KLM finds itself in the middle of unprecedented times going through a global pandemic, they have to cope with a completely changed context. We will share our honest story about how we needed to adapt our ambition of the Increasing Innovation Impact program.

Unicom 2014 - Staying relevant in the digital ecomonyMike Clark
The step towards customer experience architecture - Enterprises are attempting to incorporate multi-channels, new customer insights and a much faster rate of change into their business models. In an attempt to tackle this complexity and dynamics of an evolving enterprise, the Enterprise and Business Architecture disciplines have continued to emerge, enabling the organisation to bring all the various moving parts together. Business capabilities and the term “business model” have slowly become part of everyday language amongst stakeholders. Yet even with these successes the disciplines are still too big a pill for management to swallow, and it’s value often gets lost. The challenge of collaboratively exploring potential futures with relevant stakeholders and practitioners of related disciplines still remains.
The shift in focus to digital channels requires a new way of using and leveraging architectures.
The real question here is “how” - how does an enterprise truly change its culture to embrace collaboration? This paper is the second in a series of publications that explore the insights gathered from the SMART Technologies Collaboration Council. Here we summarize the Council’s views on the criticality and steps towards of establishing a collaborative culture. White paper by Bill Haskins, Senior Analyst at Wainhouse Research.

A high level conversation with the CIOMajlis in Dubai on how Agile Transformation (Real & Fake) are an opportunity for CIOs to build collaboration within the CEO Office and drive transformation in a post-industrial age.
As VUCA becomes the norm, the smart leaders are able to realise the power of collaboration across functions and set their eyes fully on delighting the customer. the core customer.
CIOs can drive the transformation from industrial aged thinking and executing to the digital agile era by introducing to their peers pure play Agile Tools such as Scrum & Kanban Boards to drive OKRs of the C-suite; applying Agile rituals into the C-Suite to drive faster smarter decisions and collaborations, and by systematically applying Alex Osterwalder's Value Proposition Canvas & Business Model Canvas within the Lean Start Up and/or Design Thinking approaches so that CEOs & their leadership teams can ship product and services that customers actual want and will pay for.
The Fake Agile is simply when the centre of the business' universe is not delighting the customer, where shareholder values still dominate strategic initiatives. This customer first mindset, triggered by the late Peter Drucker, may well be some years away.
Oh yeah, I know, that's a heck of a mouthful of tools I'm throwing in there, but if you are truly going to transform to the digital age you have to STOP doing a lot of useless 'stuff'.
A big thank you to Steve Denning, Alex Osterwalder, Steve Blank, Jeff Sutherland and my close friend and partner for all large scale agile transformations at Wemanity Are Van Bennekum for providing content and guidance on my journey and mission to hep entrepreneurs turn their vision into reality. Being design-ready - the organisation as the studentKarina Smith
As human-centred design becomes increasingly adopted by organisations as a key approach problem-solving, these organisations are growing their in-house design teams to meet the internal demand and training all staff in the mindsets of HCD to ensure they are 'design ready'.
While we believe providing design training for in-house staff will not replace the need for experienced designers, if we want organisations to become environments in which design approaches can flourish, education of staff at all levels about design has a place. This poses questions of who the student is, what it is they need to learn, the best approach, and to what outcomes? And if designers are to become educators for their organisation, what skills do they need?
This workshop was presented at Interaction19 Design Education Summit in Seattle, February 2019.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
