This document discusses the need for Deaf children to have access to a writing system for sign language. It notes that sign language is the natural language for the Deaf, but most Deaf children do not acquire it as their first language. This lack of early language acquisition has negative consequences for intellectual development. A writing system could help promote literacy and preserve Deaf culture, but existing methods and technologies for teaching sign language writing are inadequate. The document proposes a new framework and natural approach using touchscreen technology to develop tools for teaching written literacy in sign language.
