• Who: Jacques Cartier, 2 ships and 61 men.
• When: April 20, 1534.
• Where: From Saint-Malo to the New World.
• Why: Commissioned by King Francis to find a
passage to Asia.
• What Happened:
Cartier discovered the St. Lawrence River
Cartier met with Native Americans.
Gave the new land the name of Canada.
The King asked him to sail again.

9. Jacques cartier-the second voyage
• Who: Jacques Cartier, 3 ships and 110 men
(2 captured Native Americans came too).
• When: May of 1535
• Where: From France to the villages of Stadacona and
Hochelaga.
• Why: to find Iroquoian villages.
• What Happened:
Cartier found the villages with corn and Tobacco.
Couldn’t retuen due to the cold.
Lot of men got scurvy and died
This voyage was kind of a bummer!
10. Jacques cartier-the third voyage
• Who: Jacques Cartier, 5 ships and 1,500 men
• When: May of 1541
• Where: From France to the New World
• Why: To settle the New World.
• What Happened:
Established the 1st
French settlement “Charlesbourg
Royal”
The Native Americans were angry and wanted to
fight them
Cartier escaped back to France with “riches”
The riches were all fake

• Cartier stopped sailing after his third voyage to North
America.
• He stayed in France after and was not commissioned
again by the King.
• He died September 1, 1557 at the age of 66.
• I think that Cartier was a cool dude, even if his 3rd
voyage was kind of a disaster.
