– Change can be transparent to the customer
– Staff no longer need to estimate quantities needed for replacement/backorder
copies
– Staff no longer need to determine when to reduce number of back copies
stored
• Replacement Copies / Backorder Copies
– Generate as needed
• Special requests
– Generate as requested
• Customer individual orders
– “Pubstore” online enables individual to order and pay

– Our organization is data driven and works to automate all processes where rational.
Hence this was a good fit.
– All our titles are the same height and width – can follow each other on press without
setup changes
– Fulfillment System Database already existed
– Electronic cover to cover files created for each issue
• Project
– Agree on naming conventions for all pertinent data
– Verified our electronic issue files printed successfully on their system
– Verified our test feeds were processed successfully on their system
– Test – executed the complete process with real data from start to finish
– Follow similar steps for invoicing from printer to publisher
– Agree on reporting needs from printer to publisher - test

• Production
– Send weekly files containing customer information for:
• Titles to be published the following week
• Past issues to be created for backorders
• Past issues to be created for replacement copies
– Moved all titles for first issue of year for subscription fulfillment
– Started customer driven online ordering in 2Q of that year – new product

• Fewer replacement copies needed
• Combined result of better processes and improved distribution
• Fewer back order copies created – only create what need
• Fewer steps, hence fewer errors 
• More efficient delivery
• Can collect all issues to be delivered to same location in a given time period
and ship together (optional step)

Drivers • Economic – Lower costs, greater margins • Less staff time • Less waste • Eliminate “pick and pack” costs • Eliminate high costs for going back on press, one time fee per issue for startup • Environmental – Fewer natural resources used for “spare copies” – No storage required for excess inventory – Print additional copies as needed when presses active American Chemical Society 3

Flavors of Print on Demand • Subscription Fulfillment – Change can be transparent to the customer – Staff no longer need to estimate quantities needed for replacement/backorder copies – Staff no longer need to determine when to reduce number of back copies stored • Replacement Copies / Backorder Copies – Generate as needed • Special requests – Generate as requested • Customer individual orders – “Pubstore” online enables individual to order and pay American Chemical Society 4
  • 5. Transition • Environment – Our organization is data driven and works to automate all processes where rational. Hence this was a good fit. – All our titles are the same height and width – can follow each other on press without setup changes – Fulfillment System Database already existed – Electronic cover to cover files created for each issue • Project – Agree on naming conventions for all pertinent data – Verified our electronic issue files printed successfully on their system – Verified our test feeds were processed successfully on their system – Test – executed the complete process with real data from start to finish – Follow similar steps for invoicing from printer to publisher – Agree on reporting needs from printer to publisher - test Proprietary and Confidential American Chemical Society 5

Transition • Production – Send weekly files containing customer information for: • Titles to be published the following week • Past issues to be created for backorders • Past issues to be created for replacement copies – Moved all titles for first issue of year for subscription fulfillment – Started customer driven online ordering in 2Q of that year – new product Proprietary and Confidential American Chemical Society 6

BAN: As we’ve discussed previously, as an Author Service, I can see the rationale of offering “that special issue” to individual customers – and am prepared to run the risk of some level of institutional leakage (a library ordering one at a time) as I think demand for subscription runs of print is all but vestigial in core markets. But it does run somewhat against our marketing logic about certain journals being “born digital”.Please note too, that while I have yet to mak an official pitch yet, I reserve the right to advocate for the a print version of ACS Central Science – as I think it may be a necessary evil (at the individual subscriber level) to make it a Nature competitor as well as drive valuation for a corporate sponsorship.
