Vattenfall implemented a smart meter project in Sweden from 2002-2008 that replaced over 850,000 electrical meters. The project used different communication methods including power line communication, radio, and GPRS networks. The system was designed to collect meter data daily with a typical performance of over 99.5% collection. Security of the system was improved over time, allowing for remote switching capabilities. While smart metering provides data for customers' homes, smart street lighting provides opportunities for managing street lights but may require new business models and legislation to encourage broad implementation.
