Retrofit Distribution Automation
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
Enexis – Drivers for Distribution Automation
Key drivers and rationale
 Improve the quality of power distribution to
reduce frequency and duration of power
outages and radically decrease utility’s SAIDI
figures
 To deploy a retrofit solution in existing and new
substations.
 The automation solution had to fit 20% of the
substation variations which covered 80% of
utility’s network installations.
 To reduce installation costs by deploying a
standardized distribution automation solution,
both during the installation phase but more
importantly, during the replacement phase if
need be.
24
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
Enexis – customer experience
 Over 700 units rolled out
 Very little interaction with installers was
required in the field as everything could be
pre-configured. Installation did not require a
laptop.
 Significant outage reduction has been
achieved. Customer Minutes Lost (CML)
reduced from 87+ minutes to 3–5 minutes,
reaching almost 60% (instead of expected
40%).
 Grids are more meshed than originally
expected.
 Based on this experience the utility is able to
update its Distribution Automation strategy.
25
 Low Total Cost of Ownership of the solution
 Remote upgradability for SCADA protocols
 Remote firmware capabilities to roll out security
updates based on external security revision
 Solution flexibility and modularity proved
important as the need for increasing feeder
control was revealed during the rollout phase
 Simple and intuitive user interface

DONG energy - Drivers
Key drivers and rationale
 DONG energy was one of the first utilities to
start implementation of the smart grid plan back
in 2000. Their goal was to create a MV/LV
Monitoring and Control Solution for their
distribution network.
 Primary goal was to deploy a modular retrofit
solution to fit DONG energy’s large variety of
substations, some being 100 years old and
others being brand new.
 Second objective was to locate faults faster
(earth faults and short circuit) to be able to
reduce SAIDI, which required automation
capabilities.
27
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
DONG energy – customer experience
 Over 300 units rolled out (5% of substations
covered with automation and 3rd Generation fault
detectors)
 Significant outage reduction has been achieved.
