Ubitricity founder Knut Hechtfischer will describe a unique and innovative solution developed for residential on-street electric vehicle charging. This solution transforms the common street light into an instantly available electric vehicle charging point for those with on-street parking. At a time when electric vehicle adoption is increasing across the country, it is widely recognised that not everyone has access to a garage or even a driveway. This issue is particularly prevalent in major cities such as London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, etc. Street lighting however is available throughout most urban residential areas, offering a potential solution. In addition, columns fitted with charging points could also offer potential future revenue streams to cash strapped councils and can also tie in with future smart city initiatives.

6. Residential EV Charging
Challenges facing Local Authorities
Residential charging provides a different set of challenges to those of
charging at motorways, supermarkets or the high street:
› Requirement to provide charging points for residents
› Traffic Management Order (TMO) required for designated electric
vehicle charging spaces
› Complaints from non EV residents at loss of spaces from general
parking supply (fear some residents would buy an EV for a
guaranteed place to park)
› Planning permission for a designated charging cabinet with a
meter (cost, street clutter, length of time to install, reading issues
with meter, etc…)
› Location of charging point relevant to resident’s home
› Stranded assets if resident moves / sells car
Ubitricity has developed a solution for residents with electric
vehicles & on-street parking

8. The solution.
Why not utilise more of what is already there?
8
› Over 35 SimpleSockets currently installed in Hounslow, active
trials with other local authorities underway and more planned…
› All retrofitted into existing street lights
› No longer ‘just a humble street light’
9. Components in detail
SmartCable
EV drivers now bring the billing technology with
them whenever they want to charge.
All charging transactions are itemised and billed
monthly, the exact same principal as a mobile phone.
› Contains MID approved meter
› Has a sim card for communication to the cloud
› Has option for working even in areas with no
mobile reception
› Vehicle connection can be Type 2 or Type 1
› Will work in passive mode at non ubitricity charge
points (no need for multiple cables)
› Can see consumption details online or on ubitricity
mobile app
› Compatible with standard charging infrastructure
(IEC 61851-1 Mode 3)
9
10. Components in detail
SimpleSocket
› SimpleSockets minimise the visual impact on the urban
landscape and reduce street clutter
› Retrofitted into column door, to avoid affecting the
structural integrity of the column
› Socket physically retains plug when powered, released by
EV driver
› Secure authorisation with SmartCable required before
socket is powered
› Power: 230V, single phase, 16 – 25A
› Plug: Type 2
› If required socket can be removed in under 3 minutes and
redeployed to another location. No stranded assets.
› Designed for ‘low power, long stay’ charging. Typically
overnight for residents
› Low power does not mean half filled batteries however.
Currently we have a number of residents with cars with
the largest battery on the market (~100kWh), using our
solution to successfully charge
10
11. Moving the intelligience out of the charging point
11
By moving the metering and communication technology into
the SmartCable, provides us with two key benefits:
› Sockets become cheaper (so more can be installed)
› Electronics become smaller
Minimising the technology required at each charging location is
essential if you are to retrofit inside a residential street light.
The image on the left shows our solution which fits up inside a
column shaft with an internal diameter of 76mm (same as a
typical coffee cup dimension!). In addition there is also our
safety box (with the RCD).
12. Technical requirements
Site survey
Before any installation can be considered there are a
number of requirements and technical processes
that must be gone through:
› DNO permission – requires their permission to
utilise the existing unmetered supply
› Council permission and/or PFI
› Survey of column and surrounding area;
› 2m rule
› position of column (i.e. not back or middle of
footway)
› condition of column and column door
› earth loop impedance
› position of DNO fuse
› size of column and column shaft
› parking restrictions
› Etc…
› Installation takes around 30 minutes or less.
Sockets are fitted onto the column doors offsite
12
13. Mobile Electricity Contract
Your car, your tariff
The SmartCable will for the first time allow energy
suppliers to in effect put the MPAN onto the car.
This means that electricity companies will be able
to offer competitive energy tariffs to the EV
owner.
This could be your household energy supplier, the
cheapest supplier, the greenest supplier, etc…
The SmartCable will no longer be branded with
ubitricity but will be a white label that can be any
supplier.
This means that the SmartCable will provide you
with a choice of electricity suppliers allowing
freedom of choice and competitive pricing.
13
14. ELEXON Approval
Unmetered energy
› ubitricity realised from day one that to have an enduring solution for local authorities it
would need approval from the regulators
› Street lights are typically an unmetered supply. You cannot simply plug in an EV and then
provide estimates of the consumption
› Working with Power Data Associates we developed a method of using our MID mobile
metered data and providing it in a format that could then be used for Settlements
› After discussions with ELEXON a new test specification was developed and approved by
UMSUG
› After successful witness testing by ELEXON we received our formal ELEXON approval in
May 2017
› At the same time the Distribution Businesses were engaged with to understand their
requirements and receive permission for trials
