Introduction
● Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Limited
● electric mass transit railway system
● 47 Trains
● Objective:
● Installation of Vibration Energy Harvester based Wireless Sensor
Networks in 5 Trains
● Estimated Outcome
● Reduction in Maintenance time and cost
● Increase Safety
Business Need
● Increasing demand of safety in railways
● Reduction in maintenance cost and time of railways parts
● Shift from “Maintenance on Mileage” to “Maintenance on Need”
● Reduction of cost on spare parts (axles and wheels) by 10,000 USD per
train per year.

Approach
● Sensors
● Vibration and Temperature
● Requires an approx. average power of
3mW that can be produced from 40-50
mg of Vibration
● Communication
● Wireless communications to link the
Sensor Nodes with a Data Concentrator
and 3G connection to the central server
● Power
● Powered by vibration energy harvester.
● Data Display
● Patterns of vibration and temperature
● Alarm and Notification
Product Description
NO: Normal NW: Normal Worn IR: Inner Race Fault
Assumptions and Constraints
● Maintenance and operation time frame of trains should be adjusted for the
required sensor network installation and testing.
● Approximately, 1 Month monitoring period is required to monitor sensor
readings to calibrate and fine tune the threshold values.
● External factors such as excess noise level can impact the sensor
performance and calibration procedure should handle them.

Editor's Notes

  1. As a result of the increasing demand in safety and maintenance of the trains that serves 50,000 passengers per hour every day, Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Co., Ltd. (BTSC) is in the need of an improvement in its maintenance procedure. To comply with the international safety standard of such large railway system, the BTS railway system need to have a real time monitoring of its trains system such as wheel and axles so that faults in the moving parts are identified prior it become incidents. In addition, the cost of maintenance need to reduced such that company will meet its financial benefit by shifting to “maintain on need” from “maintain on mileage”.
  2. Vibration Energy Harvester based Wireless Sensor Networks in 5 Trains Energy harvesters powers the vibration and temperature sensors, which provide data in real time to the central server Monitoring software process measurements and ; predict the failure of rotating components such as bearings, motors and gearboxes. Provide health condition of the components A Web based monitoring system with built-in analytics and alarming capabilities solution for monitoring the health of the system components. The rotating components decrease its performance or create noise than sensor will send the data.
