The Western Bank Of The Bosporus
On the western bank of the Bosporus, just north of a sinuous waterway known by locals as the Golden
Horn, stood a bustling Genoese colony called Pera. With merchants from Genoa, Venice and Tuscany
overflowing its narrow streets, one could hardly tell that these Italian traders were in fact no less than
eight hundred miles away from their Apennine homeland. As a town of itinerants, Pera of course
hosted a great many places for lodging, and it was in the room of one such lodge where we would find
our weary cartographer a mid aged man by the name of Cristoforo Buondelmonti.
The time: late fall, 1422.
Appearing in front of Cristoforo was a piece of creased paper, empty and trivial, yet the sole focus of
his attention. He had received ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prior to receiving the commission, Cristoforo had been traveling extensively in the Aegean Sea.
Though born to an affluent Florentine family, he spent the last ten years mastering the Greek language
and documenting Greek islands. Accompanying him on his trip to Constantinople was a Thessalonian
fur trader and acquaintance named John Anagnostes, who offered to guide him through the city before
leaving for the trading post in Crimea. What lie ahead will forever linger in your mind. John
mysteriously stated as they arrived at the city by cart from the south.
Already Cristoforo could make out a wall that stretched along the horizon, which only grew in
immensity as they drew closer. Its limestone blocks soaring into the sky, the Theodosian Wall (as John
informed him) appeared far more imposing than any fortification he had witnessed in the West. When
they approached its base, though, he soon noticed the heavy damage dealt to the rampart. The
Ottomans laid siege to the city this spring. John said. I heard they acquired cannons for the first time,
but the defenders were able to fend off their assault after a prolonged battle. While entering the
Golden Gate, the main entrance to the capital, Cristoforo could not help but ponder the fashion of his
mapping: should he emphasize the wall s massive scale, or its wounded state? What exactly could be
accomplished by either? ... His thoughts, however, were cut short by the awesome view

Florida Vs Arizona Essay
Two seemingly similar places Arizona and Florida are two seemly similar places, but when you
compare the two they have very different pros and cons. Florida is a humid place, and Arizona is a dry
heat. Florida is normally sunny as well as Arizona but it gets much more rain then Arizona because it s
basically an island state. If you re looking for a bigger difference in seasons Arizona is great because
the winters are colder, and there is snow in the northern area of Arizona, while you won t ever get any
in Florida. If you re looking for a relatively warm place all year round Florida is great. Being that
Arizona is a desert state the humidity and rainfall is much lower. The average high in Arizona
summers is a strikingly high 104 degrees while Florida s average high is 92 degrees. The winter s high
median in Arizona is 48 degrees while Florida stands at 50 degrees. Usually in Arizona the wettest
month is March with around 1 and Florida s wettest month is usually June with around 7 . Arizona is
the smaller state of the two with a population of 6,553,255 while Florida is standing at 19,317,568, so
Arizona may be better if you like it to be a little less populated, and Florida is better if you like bog
crowds and can deal with heavy traffic than Arizona. Florida also has slightly ... Show more content

Developing World s Issue Of Poverty
Almost half of the world lives on less than $2.50. At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a
day. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. Poverty is an ever present
issue that affects the lives of billions of people each day. There are many government subsidies that
come into impoverished areas, but does money solve the issue of poverty? No, money alone cannot
solve the world s issue of poverty. In this paper, I want to discuss the role of microfinance in the
developing world. Microfinance can be done poorly, which will continue to stunt the economic growth
of an area, but if done properly microfinance can being human flourishment to a developing area. In
order to take a closer look into microfinance, I will highlight the efforts that Kiva, an online lending
company, has done to improve the economic horizon for many areas of the world.
The result of scarce economic growth can have catastrophic results on a community, region, and even
country. A downward spiral will be begin when there is no growth; parents are unable to send their
children to school due to a lack of money, which creates the need for the children to work to help
bring in money. Uneducated youth will then start to become a cycle that will slowly decrease the
economic growth of the community due to lack of education and the loss of upward mobility. Stunted
economic growth will affect the well being of future generations. This picture of poverty is seen
throughout

Character Development Of Hamlet
Hamlet s character drastically develops over the first four acts of Hamlet, and his character
development is most evident through the soliloquys he delivers throughout the play. The most
character development can be seen from the first soliloquy, to the second, the third, the sixth, and the
seventh and final soliloquy. Hamlet s inner conflict with his thoughts and his actions are well analyzed
in his soliloquys, as well as his struggles with life and death, and his very own existence. He begins
the play wondering what purpose he has in life now that his father is dead and his mother has
remarried to his uncle. After finding out foul play was involved in his father s death, he is motivated
by revenge. Finally, he wonders how he can enact his revenge while continuously overthinking and
overanalyzing his actions. In Act I, scene II, Hamlet delivers his first soliloquy after his mother and
new step dad/uncle Claudius try to convince him to get over the death of his father, and to accept their
rather hasty marriage. In his first soliloquy, Hamlet questions whether or not he should kill himself,
and curses God for making suicide a sin. Hamlet is also fixated on his mother s rushed marriage to his
uncle, not even a month after his father s death. Hamlet says, A little month, or ere those shoes were
old/with which she followed my poor father s body (Lines 146 147). He is very hooked on the fact
that his mother wore the same shoes to her wedding as she did to her husband s funeral, not even
having time in between to break the shoes in. Hamlet wishes he could say whatever he wants and
express his disgust about his mother s marriage and his hatred for his uncle, but since his uncle is the
reigning King of Denmark, he has to hold his tongue and show respect for the king. This first
soliloquy introduces the reader to Hamlet s indecisiveness and over analytical mindset. Hamlet is
confronted by the ghostly figure of his father in Act I, scene V. Hamlet s father informs him that he
had been murdered by Claudius. King Hamlet tells his son to avenge his death, but doesn t specify
how. King Hamlet also tells Hamlet to leave his mother out of the revenge plot, as King Hamlet
believes Claudius seduced Queen Gertrude. King

Taylor s view of motivation applies to people who tend to work within narrow job confines such as on
a production line. These are people who can be paid according to the amount of work that they do or
units they produce. This is known as piece work .
For many people pay is still a prime motivator. For example, within Kellogg s many employees are
motivated by cash alternatives which include the opportunity to buy and sell their holiday days. Taylor
s theory breaks down jobs into components or specialist tasks through the division of labour. This
especially applies to production processes within large companies like Kellogg s. These rewards can
help to increase productivity and profitability. The danger with this is that individuals are simply
focused on output to get rewards so quality might suffer as a result of employees rushing to do the job.
Scientific management is not a process that allows development of people. It limits their ability to take
ownership of what they do. Kellogg s staff are encouraged to be creative and use their imagination to
contribute towards change. Consequently, Taylor s view of monetary reward for output is not
appropriate for the motivation required for this type of workplace.
Maslow
Maslow s theory relates motivation to a hierarchy of needs. At the bottom are essential physiological
needs such as air, food, shelter and clothing. As individuals satisfy one level of need, their motivations

Most people believe that Chernobyl contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union. This explosion caused
social and economic problems in the Soviet Union. Stated in an issue of the Virginia Quarterly
Review, Chernobyl led to ...efforts of environmental groups to puncture the official silence
surrounding the disaster was what led, indirectly, to the birth of glasnost during Gorbachev s tenure
and the collapse of the totalitarian containment vessel. Multiple individuals believe that the Soviet s
reasoning for not protecting the citizens of Ukraine is that they have a ...deeply entrenched propensity
for secrecy and mendacity and its general disregard for the health and safety of its citizens. As a result
of glasnost, which is a Soviet policy of being open with their public, individuals could see how the
USSR was handling the disaster in the Ukraine. Several documents were hidden away but with the
coming of glasnost the curtain of secrecy had been removed and the secrets of Chernobyl had been
released. By obtaining these documents individuals are now able to see how the Soviet Union tried to
cover up Chernobyl and how unprepared they were to help innocent civilians. Therefore, many believe
that Chernobyl was a major contributing factor in the fall of Soviet Communism. President Gorbachev
stated ...the Chernobyl accident was a more important factor in the fall of the Soviet Union than
Perestroika... Chernobyl is suspected to be the major downfall of the Communist government. The
Soviet Union was robbed of the opportunity to keep news of the accident from reaching the public,
secrecy quickly became a massive liability that undermined Soviet citizens faith in their government.

Prologue: International Expansion
On August 2, 1996, Starbucks Coffee Company opened its first store outside North America. Like
many of its U.S. and Canadian outlets, the new store was located in a busy district of a prominent city
Tokyo. Starbucks managers had devoted much time to selecting the site, designing the store s layout
and fixtures, training its staff, and publicizing its introduction. A series of events, including receptions
and public samplings, attracted consumer interest in the new store s specialty coffee drinks, whole

learn more about the brand and its offerings. Most people standing in line intended to buy a caffe latte,
cappuccino, or other specialty coffee drink that they associated with the young company.
Schultz was impressed by the customers enthusiasm. The Starbucks brand, he realized, had the same
power in Tokyo that it had in New York and Seattle. It had taken on a life of its own. 4
Schultz had bought the company in 1987, when it was still a small Seattle retailer, mainly selling
coffee beans. In the ensuing nine years, it had become the nation s largest purveyor of specialty coffee,
selling the beverage served in various ways, along with coffee beans and related food and
merchandise. Between 1992 and 1996, annual revenues had increased more than 650%, climbing to
almost $700 million (Exhibit 5).5
Most of this increase had been driven by the swift proliferation of company owned stores, with the
rest of it coming from two thriving divisions mail order, and specialty sales, which sold coffee to
restaurants and other institutional purchasers. In 1987, Starbucks had 11 outlets; nine years later, over
900. In fiscal 1996 alone, the company opened 330 outlets, an average of almost one a day.6 As the
business moved into new U.S. and Canadian urban markets, consumer awareness of specialty coffee
and the Starbucks brand widened considerably. By the mid 1990s, millions of

Importance Of Polite Speech
People use polite speech to greet people or either to start something like a conversation with friends or
strangers and to express their gratitude to someone. Some people don t really like polite speech since
it never helped them out or they thought of polite speech as something unnecessary to life; however,
other people would think otherwise because polite speech is kind away to talk to someone or address
someone or even get what you want from someone like making someone go somewhere or even
tagging along to a party. This demonstrates that polite speech as a big function in today s society
because everyone uses polite speech to get something. Polite speech can used as a way to persuade
someone into doing what they want or getting something important. Polite speech can be used to start
a conversation or keep the conversation going. Polite speech can be used to get information from
someone or getting out of a sticky situation. Polite speech can used as a way to persuade someone into
doing what they want or getting something important. People in today s society use polite speech to
lower the guard of a person so that they can talk them into doing an activity or helping themselves out.
For example, Henry got three tickets to go to a concert and that person doesn t want to go alone to the
concert so he decides to persuade his two friends that got nothing better to do. The way Henry
persuades them is when he gets both of their attention he says How s the weather

The Future of Currency nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;In the present day, the world s economy is ever

something that can only be predicted and is not guaranteed. However, there are many determing
factors behind the changes that can take place. Asia and North America are two continents that have
economies that have recently changed or are in the midst of change. World War 2 drew a hard blow

In accordance to this, China went on a construction binge. Whole factories were purchased from
abroad while others were built with local resources. By 1978, the frenzy for new projects reached a
level that reminded some people of the Great Leap Forward. In an effort to promote agricultural
production, the government released many of the restrictions on the spontaneous capitalist tendencies
of the peasantry. (173) In the late 1980 s, the government decided to expand the scope of private
marketing. The next step was to increase the amount land assigned to the peasants. The peasants were
now not responsible to the government for the use they made to the private plots. They simply could
grow what they wished, for the sale to the government or to private markets. This led to furious
rebuilding and inflow of foreign investments. All this enabled China to remake itself into Asian s hub
of finance, trade and culture. By 1984, they were producing more than $1 million worth of rice and a
range of side products, including rice wine. Their residential earning was up to about $200 a year.
(Prager 52 ) This meant that they could begin replacing their mud and straw hats with solid brick
houses. Shanghai today is a vast construction site with more than 20,000 projects, with 27,000
companies building bridges, tunnels, flyovers, ring roads, hotels, villas, golf courses and also public
housing. This sparked national growth of about 10% a year.( 53 ) The Chinese now are going home

Theme Of Alienation In The Movie Metropolis
The silent film, Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang, released in 1927, reflects the social situation of the
time in Germany during the Weimar Period, before the rise of Hitler power. At that time, there was a
new political climate, which was in favor of an equity oriented fascism rather than liberty oriented
capitalism. The film clearly gives viewers an idea that fascism way of the political system is the
preferable ideology for the society by depicting the class struggles between capitalists and labours.
Thus, the movie was often interpreted as a propaganda movie and being criticized. At the beginning of
the movie, it highlights some differences between one category of people called heads, which is a
metaphor that represents rulers or capitalists and the other one called hands, which represents workers
in a capitalist society. The former, who live in a highly developed city above the ground, are pictured
lively, dress nicely, and seem to have a satisfiable life, whereas the latter, who live in deep under the
ground, live deadly and seem to have lost their humanity because of the exceeded workload. Karl
Marx developed the theory of alienation that explains the function of the capitalist society causes
separation, dehumanization of workers, and disenchanting effects of hard work (Marx, 1932, p. 324).
Among four types of alienation that Marx provides; alienation from the product, alienation from
labour process, alienation from one another, and alienation from species being, the first one explains
that what the workers made does not actually belong to them but capitalists (Marx, 1932, p. 325, 326).
Furthermore, the process of activities of workers are also estranged from them because workers
externalize their ability to work, labour power, to the object, but that labour power is controlled by
capitalist and exists outside of workers (Marx, 1932, p. 324). As we saw in the movie, those are
workers that who spend 10 hours a day at the workplace and devote themselves producing
productions; however, those productions end up belonging to capitalists. For example, trains cars,
clothes, and those other commodities are made by hands but it is head that who actually uses them.
Consequently, in the capitalist society,

Technology And Evolution Of Cell Phones
When cell phones were first introduced, they were large and expensive. In 1983 the first truly mobile
phone was released by Motorola. It was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. To some people it is known as
the Zack Morris phone. He used this phone on a regular basis in a popular television show called
Saved by the bell which took place in the late 80 s to early 90 s. It was an extremely large device
compared to the ones we are used to now and it was only designed to make phone calls. It was not
often used for personal use like today. They were primarily used in the sales and business world, but
not for personal use like you see today said Kreg Jones, an industrial designer and industrial design
instructor at the Art institute of Philadelphia ( The History and Evolution of Cell Phones ). Initially
cell phones could only make phone calls. In later cell phones eventually voicemail was added, but the
main feature was still talking. Eventually companies realized the potential to integrate other
technologies into the phones. The earliest smart phones integrated email access and allowed the phone
to be used as an address book, pager, and fax machine. Cell phones more recently picked up the name
mobile device as the purpose has shifted to more of a multimedia device rather than just a phone used
for only direct communication. Cell phones have come a long way since then. They have continued to
evolve and have become a huge part of our life today. It s not just adults who have

It is necessary for individuals to view themselves from the outside in occasionally in order to gain a
different perspective and improve their self evaluation ability. Furthermore, continual self assessments
enable leaders to understand their strengths and weaknesses so that they may improve on their

From the results, I learnt that I do not have a strong preference for any particular organisational
structure or culture. This was not a surprise to me as I discovered from my experience in multiple
corporations that most combinations of organisational structure and culture can be successful given
effective leadership. However, I did notice a similar trait in all the effective leaders that I have worked
with. They all possess excellent interpersonal skills that enable them to understand their followers
sources of motivation to work. From a cultural perspective, I believe that this is my biggest challenge
to assimilate which is why this concept became my chosen area of research.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE
As a result of increasing globalisation of businesses and shortage of skilled labour in the workforce,
the embrace of new leadership practices is compulsory for every organisation s continual existence
and growth (Lynham and Chermack 2006). Organisations that are progressively reorganising
themselves to be more team oriented in their daily operations are enjoying the merits over traditional

Muscle Torque Essay
Muscle torque is beneficial when multi joint movement (throwing) taken place with accordance to
Central Nervous System, Interaction torque, and the muscles involving when torque occurred. Torque
in multijoint limb movements doesn t only occur from muscles acting at a specific joint, but from
interactions due to the rotations of other joints (Hollerbach and FLash, 1982). In this case, it supports
Bernstein s idea that muscle torque at the two joints was not necessary related to each other to produce
coordinated joint movement (Turvey 1990). The muscle torque (MT) is a measurement of action
muscle torque to rotate the joint (Marconi 2008). Moreover, the interaction torque (IT) is one of the

Shoulder deceleration before ball release is not produced by active shoulder antagonist MT, but it is
influenced by IT from elbow extension (Hore, 2010). As a result, MT is predominantly driven by

In a similar study, the Central Nervous System (CNS) is required to generate motor commands by
taking net torque, muscle torque, interaction torque, gravitational torque into consideration to execute
multi joint movement (Hirashima 2003). Throwers were examined by instructing them to throw balls
of different weights and diameter and it was predicted that back forces would adjust the finger grip
force in accordance to the amplitude and finger extension (Harashima, 2003). As a result, the CNS of
the skilled ball throwers could predict for back forces caused by the hand acceleration (Hirashima,
2003).
In contrary, CNS is only examined through quick movement because of the belief that IT is acquired
on speed (Yamasaki, 2008). Another research opposing the study mentioned that CNS is unknown in
dealing with the IT when adjusting the movement speed in ball throwing movements (Hirashima,
2003). In conclusion, the central nervous system generates agonist and antagonist resulting in multi

A person does not have to intend to remain the state forever, all that is required is an intent to make

Suicide Prevention And Intervention For Ptsd
Effective Suicide Prevention and Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Over the course of a lifetime, people experience both triumphs and trials. Accepting a new job,
starting a family, or buying a new home are all exciting triumphs, while the loss of a loved one to
illness or the endurance of domestic violence are overwhelming trials. In response to trauma and
various difficult life situations, people often contemplate suicide. Existing literature on suicide,
prevention, and intervention suggests an incredibly alarming number of people struggle with suicide
ideation and behaviors. In the last decade, research evidence has been used to propose and implement
prevention and intervention strategies in an effort to decrease the national suicide rate. For those who
have experienced trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often an outcome. Because the
national suicide rate remains high, and with an increase in traumatic events in the United States, there
is likely a need for new and improved, empirically based prevention and intervention plans for
supporting people with PTSD who are at risk of suicide. Thus, the following review outlines research
exploring the relationship between PTSD and suicide, and more specifically, the prevention and
intervention methods used in supporting people who have PTSD and are at higher risk of suicide.

Martha pushed Jack and Jackie together on the couch, served them cocktails and hors d oeuvres and
let them drink their heads off. Charles Bartlett says that he had nothing to do with it, his wife was the
only matchmaker involved in this scheme. This was not the only time that they met at the Bartlett s
home. When they started dating regularly they sometimes met there for a game of bridge, Checkers, or
Monopoly. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Jack telephoned Jackie in London one day and proposed
marriage. The engagement was announced in June 24, 1953 and the wedding was set for September
12, 1953. (Davis 316) Joe Kennedy made sure that the wedding was well publicized as the Wedding of
the Year. (Mills 108)(Davis 189) Police estimated that around three thousand onlookers watched as
Mr. and Mrs. John F. Kennedy emerged from St. Mary s Catholic Church in Newport for the first time
and posed for the Associated Press, United Press, New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post,
and even Life magazine. The reception was held at Hammersmith Farm and around 1,200 guests sat at
tables on the lawn and ate creamed chicken. Guests danced on the terrace to music played by Meyer
Davis and at one point cleared the floor and watched the newlywed couple dance to I Married an
Angel and No Other Love. Jackie presented her bridesmaids with monogrammed silver picture frames

Human s Obsession with the Pretty One
Chasing Beauty
Sitting in a bar a few nights ago I noticed two women sitting at a table by themselves. It wasn t long
till a group of four guys asked to join them. As the men pulled up chairs they concentrated heavily to
one side of the table. It didn t take long to figure out they were all pining after the more attractive of
the two women. Why does the pretty woman get all the attention and free drinks, and her homely
friend blends into the wallpaper? We all know attractive people get treated better. It s so ingrained in
human evolution to chase after attractive qualities, and it shapes our every day lives.
Advertising is a good example of our affinity for beauty. Magazines, television, billboards, and
Internet pop up ads use attractive people to sell products. We end up chasing products that we believe
will make us healthier, better looking, or covers our physical flaws. They get beautiful models and
actresses to make consumers think the product is what makes the models and actresses attractive. This
tactic is so effective because it plays on our desire to be attractive. The more attractive we are the
better sexual mates we can attract. Martial arts expert Chuck Norris endorses a home workout product
called the Total Gym. We see Chuck Norris using the product in the commercials, yet it had nothing to
do with the level of fitness he achieved. It doesn t matter though. We see the extremely fit man using a
product so we think if we use it as well we to can be in that kind

Welfare Against Mandatory Minimum Law
Families Against Mandatory Minimum also known as FAMM advocate for smart sentencing such as
individualized and fair criminal sentencing that protect the public. FAMM is nonprofit supported by
attorneys, judges, criminal justice experts and concerned citizens. Their objectives include:
uncrowding jails, which use citizens tax money, shift resources from uncrowded jails due to excessive
incarceration to other departments such as law enforcement and additional programs whose aims
include reducing crime and recidivism, and lastly, encourage individuals who have suffered from
mandatory minimum sentencing and whose lives have been harmed by these practices to be
constructive. To achieve their goal of fair sentencing, FAMM advocates for their objectives on a state
and national level. Sometimes FAMM gets involved in appeals and works with lawyers, however most
of the time FAMM just does presentations for governmental positions such as Congress or the U.S.
Supreme court, asking for change. In addition, FAMM encourages people to call their local
representatives and spread the word, realizing there is strength in numbers ( Sentencing that, 2014).
There are several ongoing projects working towards their goal. The Massachusetts Project is an
initiative where FAMM is working on changing drug sentencing laws and the for the Florida Project
FAMM is working on drug and gun laws where there are no alternatives other than minimum
sentences. However, on a larger scale, on the national level,

Richard Plantagenet Essay
For this project I would like to research the public opinion and reception of the political reforms made
by Richard Plantagenet as both Duke of Gloucester and King of England. Upon his brother Edward IV
s regaining of the throne in 1471, Richard gained properties and offices in the far north of England
previously enjoyed only by lords of long standing families such as the Percys. As Duke of Gloucester,
Richard served as an extension of royal power and was charged with constructing some semblance of
order. Repeatedly, Richard used his close relationship with the king to settle disputes between nobility
and local governments in favor of the latter. This suggests an affinity for the lesser classes that
continued during his brief reign. In a previous research project I discussed Richard s 1484 Parliament
and how it sought to benefit the general public over the nobility. While this argument was backed by
fairly substantial evidence as to the intent of the laws and amendments, the public reaction to them
was not addressed. Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to follow up on the effects of these
parliamentary statutes as, after his death in 1485, many of Richard s reforms were eradicated or ...

a foreign and somewhat hostile writer, gives several insightful descriptions of public opinion during

The True Magic Of The World Of Faerie
When one thinks of the world of Faerie, they tend to imagine wondrous and fantastical places,
however while they make occurrences they are rarely the bulk of the tale. In order to contrast the
wonder and goodness there have to be places where it is absent or darkened and perverted. The true
magic of the stories lies in the consolation, the restoring of these desolations, as J.R.R. Tolkien says in
his essay On Fairy Stories, I would venture to assert that all complete fairy stories must have [the
Consolation of the Happy Ending] ( On Fairy 85). Throughout the works of J.R.R. Tolkien,
specifically Leaf by Niggle, Farmer Giles of Ham, and The Hobbit, both desolations, and the
restoration of them are central motifs. Leaf by Niggle is short story, written by Tolkien, about a painter
who is obsessed with completing his enormous painting of a tree, titled Leaf . His main world is his
home and his painting. Before he can finish his painting though he is sent to a Workhouse. The
Workhouse in this story is the desolation. For the majority of his time there he is sick and in the
infirmary. The sickness in a way is another form of desolation. It is a figurative desolation where his
physical health is damaged. At the workhouse poor Niggle got no pleasure out of life which is one of
the clear signs that this is a desolation ( Leaf 109). The desolations work in a contrast to both the
places of good magic and the home that the character, in this case Niggle, is used to.

Women s Female Leadership During The Renaissance
The concept of the salon, originating in Italy during the Renaissance, was introduced to France in the
seventeenth century and evolved into a three hundred year old tradition built exclusively on the
strength of feminocentric rule. One of the most fascinating things about the institution of the salon is
that its female leadership flourished during a period of history when women were not permitted to be
involved in activities outside the boundaries of domesticity. According to Wolf, this paradoxical
climate began to emerge during the Renaissance when the Salic law came into effect in fourteenth
century. This Law denied women the right to inherit the family name, fortune or property. She was
also denied the right to receive a public education. Women learned the only way to gain social status
was through marriage, conducting cultural and social functions of the court in their husband s name.
Young girls were raised to believe their primary role was to develop the attributes that would secure
marrying into the right family. The ability to sing, dance, play multiple instruments was a mark of
distinction. Music education especially for women was extremely important to those among the upper
class. Some scholars believe men imposed the study of music on women...to prevent them from
acquiring the kinds of knowledge, hence power, that men possessed. The time devoted to the study of
music developed exceptionally talented women but they were only allowed to play in

The Arkenstone In J. R. Tolkien s The Lord Of The Rings
The Arkenstone
It was a globe with a thousand facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like
snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon! (Tolkien 268). Another important symbol in The
Hobbit is the Arkenstone. The Arkenstone is not only the spiritual meaning of the quest but also a
symbol of greed, power, and the history of the dwarves.
The Arkenstone is a large part of the Durin s race of dwarves history. Discovered in the heart of the
mountain under the reign of Thrain I, a very distant ancestor of Thorin Oakenshield. The gem then got
its name, the Arkenstone, from an ancient word meaning precious stone. The jewel has since been
passed down from heir to heir of the Kingdom that is Erebor. The gem has been a crucial part of the
dwarves history for generations. When thinking of one object that represents Durin s race one thinks
of the Arkenstone.

All his wealth attracted the evil dragon that is Smaug to take it. From that point on the stone became
so desirable that many wanted to own it and would often be blinded by their want and risking the lives
of themselves and many others. Just as Thorin did with the whole adventure. He risked the lives of
every dwarf and Bilbo just so he could call the Arkenstone his. When one really thinks about the
original plan for the quest, one would see how it was near impossible. How could a company of
thirteen dwarves and a hobbit possibly slay a dragon without help? This however did not cross Thorin
s mind for he was blinded by his own want to acquire the jewel. Bilbo was also affected by the
Arkenstone. Although knowing that Thorin wanted the stone for himself and that his main quest was
to retrieve it for him, Bilbo kept the stone for himself. The Arkenstone has many stories of it driving
dwarves mad with greed and I think it only suitable to say that it is in fact a symbol of

Krakow Research Paper
Only a few miles from Poland s second largest cities, Krakow, lies a nearly barren field with only a
moderate sized memorial to the thousands of people killed in a brutal act of genocide. Here, between
1941 and 1945, thousands of enemies of the Nazi party, primarily Jews, were worked, starved, died of
disease, or were shot. Out of the over 150,000 people sent through Plaszow and its sub camps, only
around 2,000 survived. From its establishment in 1941 to its liquidation in January 1945, thousands of
people lost their lives or were sent to their deaths in other camps. In the years before the German
occupation, the Jewish population of Krakow was usually around 70,000. After the Nazi conquest, the
Jews were persecuted relentlessly. Between May and December of 1941, 55,000 Krakow Jews were
forced into the countryside, and between 15,000 and 20,000 remaining Jews were housed in the newly
established Krakow Ghetto. In June of the same year, the Krakow Plaszow Forced Labor camp was

Contemporary Issues Involving Sex Crimes
Contemporary Issues Involving Sex Crimes, Sexual Offenders, and Victims of Sexual Crimes
Heather Anderson
American Public University
Abstract
Sexual abuse is any uncontrolled sexual act in which a person is pressed or physically forced to
engage against their will, or any non consensual sexual touching of a person. A sex offender is a
person who has been convicted of certain sex crimes. A victim of a sexual crime is the subject of
unwanted sexual offenses. In order for sexual activity to be all right, both people must want it to
happen. When any person forces you to participate in any sexual act when you don t want to it is
sexual assault. Physical force is not always used to sexually assault a victim. Most victims are
assaulted by someone they know. Most offenders are male whether the victim is female or male. The
victims of sexual abuse can be males or females of any race, age, social class, appearance, or sexual
orientation. This paper will discuss some of the contemporary issues involving sex crimes, sexual
offenders, and victims of sexual crimes.
Keywords: sex crimes, victims, offenders, abuse, assault
Sex crimes can involve physical contact such as unwanted touching or no physical contact for
example, internet crimes (CSOM, 2006). Sexual abuse is unwanted contact between two or more

During the course I realized how large of a role art plays in helping create cultures and developing and
preserving the history of civilizations. I find it interesting that when there s no written history or any
historical buildings, cultures will always make their own ancient past grander than what it really is.
The Israelites, the Greeks and Romans all tell stories of their history that has no written proof. It
seems that we as people want to have a connection to our roots and to understand where we come
from. This is why I believe that most people want to believe in a higher power.

Until now, I didn t realize how much Islam influenced art and practically kick started science. I
learned that the Abbasid caliphs established the House of Wisdom, a center of leaning and science.
They gathered manuscripts in Greek and Sanskrit along with scholars who could understand and
translate them from the areas that they conquered.
The Abbasids were the first ones to study and translate important Greek and Indian mathematical book
like Euclid s geometry text the Elements. They adopted a very Greek approach to mathematics of
formulating theorems precisely and proving them formally in Euclid s ways.
Islamists wrote many influential books on mathematics of algebra that we still use today. One of the
books described how to write numbers in calculations using the place value decimal system which is
what we use today. This concept was developed in India in A.D. 600 s which was translated and
adopted by Arabic mathematicians. About 300 years later this book was translated into Latin and it
became the major source for European academics to learn the new system. This system is known as
the Hindu Arabic system which is taught to schoolchildren around the world. It s amazing that a
system of calculations was brought to Europe from practically the other side of the world. I wonder
how long it would have taken to figure out the same system without Muslim involvement.
I find it fascinating how almost a millennia ago

Indonesia Globalization
Intro: Indonesia is the sixteenth largest economy, the largest economy in the South east Asian
economic region with the world s fourth largest population (263 million in 2017). It is an emerging
economy that has increased its international integration, trade liberalisation and diverted from policies
of import substitution towards export led development. Indonesia is a member of the Group of 20
(G20) major economies and has been an active founding member of the World Trade Organisation
(WTO). The impact of globalisation has benefited Indonesia as quality of life indicators and economic
developments have improved but it also presents the challenge of improving regulations, building
more competitive industries, increasing investment into education and infrastructure to remain
competitive. Consequently, Indonesia has introduced numerous strategies to promote economic
growth and development. Body 1 (Impact of Globalisation policies on trade) Globalisation as a
catalyst for increased trade has led to Indonesia adopting policies targeting economic growth and
development. Indonesia represents 0.8% of global trade value which has grown 240 times larger in
2016 compared to 1967. Globalisation has increased international demand for Indonesian goods and
services as their top trade partners are China, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. As a
result, Indonesia has joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Free Trade Area

  • 2. The Western Bank Of The Bosporus On the western bank of the Bosporus, just north of a sinuous waterway known by locals as the Golden Horn, stood a bustling Genoese colony called Pera. With merchants from Genoa, Venice and Tuscany overflowing its narrow streets, one could hardly tell that these Italian traders were in fact no less than eight hundred miles away from their Apennine homeland. As a town of itinerants, Pera of course hosted a great many places for lodging, and it was in the room of one such lodge where we would find our weary cartographer a mid aged man by the name of Cristoforo Buondelmonti. The time: late fall, 1422. Appearing in front of Cristoforo was a piece of creased paper, empty and trivial, yet the sole focus of his attention. He had received ... Though born to an affluent Florentine family, he spent the last ten years mastering the Greek language and documenting Greek islands. Accompanying him on his trip to Constantinople was a Thessalonian fur trader and acquaintance named John Anagnostes, who offered to guide him through the city before leaving for the trading post in Crimea. What lie ahead will forever linger in your mind. John mysteriously stated as they arrived at the city by cart from the south. Already Cristoforo could make out a wall that stretched along the horizon, which only grew in immensity as they drew closer. Its limestone blocks soaring into the sky, the Theodosian Wall (as John informed him) appeared far more imposing than any fortification he had witnessed in the West. When they approached its base, though, he soon noticed the heavy damage dealt to the rampart. The Ottomans laid siege to the city this spring. John said. I heard they acquired cannons for the first time, but the defenders were able to fend off their assault after a prolonged battle. While entering the Golden Gate, the main entrance to the capital, Cristoforo could not help but ponder the fashion of his mapping: should he emphasize the wall s massive scale, or its wounded state? What exactly could be accomplished by either? ... His thoughts, however, were cut short by the awesome view ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Florida Vs Arizona Essay Two seemingly similar places Arizona and Florida are two seemly similar places, but when you compare the two they have very different pros and cons. Florida is a humid place, and Arizona is a dry heat. Florida is normally sunny as well as Arizona but it gets much more rain then Arizona because it s basically an island state. If you re looking for a bigger difference in seasons Arizona is great because the winters are colder, and there is snow in the northern area of Arizona, while you won t ever get any in Florida. If you re looking for a relatively warm place all year round Florida is great. Being that Arizona is a desert state the humidity and rainfall is much lower. The average high in Arizona summers is a strikingly high 104 degrees while Florida s average high is 92 degrees. The winter s high median in Arizona is 48 degrees while Florida stands at 50 degrees. Usually in Arizona the wettest month is March with around 1 and Florida s wettest month is usually June with around 7 . Arizona is the smaller state of the two with a population of 6,553,255 while Florida is standing at 19,317,568, so Arizona may be better if you like it to be a little less populated, and Florida is better if you like bog crowds and can deal with heavy traffic than Arizona. • 4. Developing World s Issue Of Poverty Almost half of the world lives on less than $2.50. At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. Poverty is an ever present issue that affects the lives of billions of people each day. There are many government subsidies that come into impoverished areas, but does money solve the issue of poverty? No, money alone cannot solve the world s issue of poverty. In this paper, I want to discuss the role of microfinance in the developing world. Microfinance can be done poorly, which will continue to stunt the economic growth of an area, but if done properly microfinance can being human flourishment to a developing area. In order to take a closer look into microfinance, I will highlight the efforts that Kiva, an online lending company, has done to improve the economic horizon for many areas of the world. The result of scarce economic growth can have catastrophic results on a community, region, and even country. A downward spiral will be begin when there is no growth; parents are unable to send their children to school due to a lack of money, which creates the need for the children to work to help bring in money. Uneducated youth will then start to become a cycle that will slowly decrease the economic growth of the community due to lack of education and the loss of upward mobility. Stunted economic growth will affect the well being of future generations. This picture of poverty is seen throughout ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Character Development Of Hamlet Hamlet s character drastically develops over the first four acts of Hamlet, and his character development is most evident through the soliloquys he delivers throughout the play. The most character development can be seen from the first soliloquy, to the second, the third, the sixth, and the seventh and final soliloquy. Hamlet s inner conflict with his thoughts and his actions are well analyzed in his soliloquys, as well as his struggles with life and death, and his very own existence. He begins the play wondering what purpose he has in life now that his father is dead and his mother has remarried to his uncle. After finding out foul play was involved in his father s death, he is motivated by revenge. Finally, he wonders how he can enact his revenge while continuously overthinking and overanalyzing his actions. In Act I, scene II, Hamlet delivers his first soliloquy after his mother and new step dad/uncle Claudius try to convince him to get over the death of his father, and to accept their rather hasty marriage. In his first soliloquy, Hamlet questions whether or not he should kill himself, and curses God for making suicide a sin. Hamlet is also fixated on his mother s rushed marriage to his uncle, not even a month after his father s death. Hamlet says, A little month, or ere those shoes were old/with which she followed my poor father s body (Lines 146 147). He is very hooked on the fact that his mother wore the same shoes to her wedding as she did to her husband s funeral, not even having time in between to break the shoes in. Hamlet wishes he could say whatever he wants and express his disgust about his mother s marriage and his hatred for his uncle, but since his uncle is the reigning King of Denmark, he has to hold his tongue and show respect for the king. This first soliloquy introduces the reader to Hamlet s indecisiveness and over analytical mindset. Hamlet is confronted by the ghostly figure of his father in Act I, scene V. Hamlet s father informs him that he had been murdered by Claudius. King Hamlet tells his son to avenge his death, but doesn t specify how. King Hamlet also tells Hamlet to leave his mother out of the revenge plot, as King Hamlet believes Claudius seduced Queen Gertrude. King ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taylor s view of motivation applies to people who tend to work within narrow job confines such as on a production line. These are people who can be paid according to the amount of work that they do or units they produce. This is known as piece work . For many people pay is still a prime motivator. For example, within Kellogg s many employees are motivated by cash alternatives which include the opportunity to buy and sell their holiday days. Taylor s theory breaks down jobs into components or specialist tasks through the division of labour. This especially applies to production processes within large companies like Kellogg s. These rewards can help to increase productivity and profitability. The danger with this is that individuals are simply focused on output to get rewards so quality might suffer as a result of employees rushing to do the job. Scientific management is not a process that allows development of people. It limits their ability to take ownership of what they do. Kellogg s staff are encouraged to be creative and use their imagination to contribute towards change. Consequently, Taylor s view of monetary reward for output is not appropriate for the motivation required for this type of workplace. Maslow Maslow s theory relates motivation to a hierarchy of needs. At the bottom are essential physiological needs such as air, food, shelter and clothing. As individuals satisfy one level of need, their motivations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Starbucks brand, he realized, had the same power in Tokyo that it had in New York and Seattle. It had taken on a life of its own. 4 Schultz had bought the company in 1987, when it was still a small Seattle retailer, mainly selling coffee beans. In the ensuing nine years, it had become the nation s largest purveyor of specialty coffee, selling the beverage served in various ways, along with coffee beans and related food and merchandise. Between 1992 and 1996, annual revenues had increased more than 650%, climbing to almost $700 million (Exhibit 5).5 Most of this increase had been driven by the swift proliferation of company owned stores, with the rest of it coming from two thriving divisions mail order, and specialty sales, which sold coffee to restaurants and other institutional purchasers. In 1987, Starbucks had 11 outlets; nine years later, over 900. In fiscal 1996 alone, the company opened 330 outlets, an average of almost one a day.6 As the business moved into new U.S. and Canadian urban markets, consumer awareness of specialty coffee and the Starbucks brand widened considerably. Many different reasons control the reasons for this. The future of currency is something that can only be predicted and is not guaranteed. However, there are many determing factors behind the changes that can take place. Asia and North America are two continents that have economies that have recently changed or are in the midst of change. By 1978, the frenzy for new projects reached a level that reminded some people of the Great Leap Forward. In an effort to promote agricultural production, the government released many of the restrictions on the spontaneous capitalist tendencies of the peasantry. (173) In the late 1980 s, the government decided to expand the scope of private marketing. The next step was to increase the amount land assigned to the peasants. The peasants were now not responsible to the government for the use they made to the private plots. They simply could grow what they wished, for the sale to the government or to private markets. This led to furious rebuilding and inflow of foreign investments. All this enabled China to remake itself into Asian s hub of finance, trade and culture. By 1984, they were producing more than $1 million worth of rice and a range of side products, including rice wine. Their residential earning was up to about $200 a year. • 12. Theme Of Alienation In The Movie Metropolis The silent film, Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang, released in 1927, reflects the social situation of the time in Germany during the Weimar Period, before the rise of Hitler power. At that time, there was a new political climate, which was in favor of an equity oriented fascism rather than liberty oriented capitalism. The film clearly gives viewers an idea that fascism way of the political system is the preferable ideology for the society by depicting the class struggles between capitalists and labours. Thus, the movie was often interpreted as a propaganda movie and being criticized. At the beginning of the movie, it highlights some differences between one category of people called heads, which is a metaphor that represents rulers or capitalists and the other one called hands, which represents workers in a capitalist society. The former, who live in a highly developed city above the ground, are pictured lively, dress nicely, and seem to have a satisfiable life, whereas the latter, who live in deep under the ground, live deadly and seem to have lost their humanity because of the exceeded workload. Karl Marx developed the theory of alienation that explains the function of the capitalist society causes separation, dehumanization of workers, and disenchanting effects of hard work (Marx, 1932, p. 324). Among four types of alienation that Marx provides; alienation from the product, alienation from labour process, alienation from one another, and alienation from species being, the first one explains that what the workers made does not actually belong to them but capitalists (Marx, 1932, p. 325, 326). Furthermore, the process of activities of workers are also estranged from them because workers externalize their ability to work, labour power, to the object, but that labour power is controlled by capitalist and exists outside of workers (Marx, 1932, p. 324). As we saw in the movie, those are workers that who spend 10 hours a day at the workplace and devote themselves producing productions; however, those productions end up belonging to capitalists. For example, trains cars, clothes, and those other commodities are made by hands but it is head that who actually uses them. Consequently, in the capitalist society, ... • 13. Technology And Evolution Of Cell Phones When cell phones were first introduced, they were large and expensive. In 1983 the first truly mobile phone was released by Motorola. It was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. To some people it is known as the Zack Morris phone. He used this phone on a regular basis in a popular television show called Saved by the bell which took place in the late 80 s to early 90 s. It was an extremely large device compared to the ones we are used to now and it was only designed to make phone calls. It was not often used for personal use like today. They were primarily used in the sales and business world, but not for personal use like you see today said Kreg Jones, an industrial designer and industrial design instructor at the Art institute of Philadelphia ( The History and Evolution of Cell Phones ). Initially cell phones could only make phone calls. In later cell phones eventually voicemail was added, but the main feature was still talking. Eventually companies realized the potential to integrate other technologies into the phones. The earliest smart phones integrated email access and allowed the phone to be used as an address book, pager, and fax machine. Cell phones more recently picked up the name mobile device as the purpose has shifted to more of a multimedia device rather than just a phone used for only direct communication. Cell phones have come a long way since then. They have continued to evolve and have become a huge part of our life today. It s not just adults who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was not a surprise to me as I discovered from my experience in multiple corporations that most combinations of organisational structure and culture can be successful given effective leadership. However, I did notice a similar trait in all the effective leaders that I have worked with. They all possess excellent interpersonal skills that enable them to understand their followers sources of motivation to work. Torque in multijoint limb movements doesn t only occur from muscles acting at a specific joint, but from interactions due to the rotations of other joints (Hollerbach and FLash, 1982). In this case, it supports Bernstein s idea that muscle torque at the two joints was not necessary related to each other to produce coordinated joint movement (Turvey 1990). Throwers were examined by instructing them to throw balls of different weights and diameter and it was predicted that back forces would adjust the finger grip force in accordance to the amplitude and finger extension (Harashima, 2003). As a result, the CNS of the skilled ball throwers could predict for back forces caused by the hand acceleration (Hirashima, 2003). • 19. Suicide Prevention And Intervention For Ptsd Effective Suicide Prevention and Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Over the course of a lifetime, people experience both triumphs and trials. Accepting a new job, starting a family, or buying a new home are all exciting triumphs, while the loss of a loved one to illness or the endurance of domestic violence are overwhelming trials. In response to trauma and various difficult life situations, people often contemplate suicide. Existing literature on suicide, prevention, and intervention suggests an incredibly alarming number of people struggle with suicide ideation and behaviors. In the last decade, research evidence has been used to propose and implement prevention and intervention strategies in an effort to decrease the national suicide rate. For those who have experienced trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often an outcome. Because the national suicide rate remains high, and with an increase in traumatic events in the United States, there is likely a need for new and improved, empirically based prevention and intervention plans for supporting people with PTSD who are at risk of suicide. Thus, the following review outlines research exploring the relationship between PTSD and suicide, and more specifically, the prevention and intervention methods used in supporting people who have PTSD and are at higher risk of suicide. Why does the pretty woman get all the attention and free drinks, and her homely friend blends into the wallpaper? We all know attractive people get treated better. It s so ingrained in human evolution to chase after attractive qualities, and it shapes our every day lives. Advertising is a good example of our affinity for beauty. Magazines, television, billboards, and Internet pop up ads use attractive people to sell products. We end up chasing products that we believe will make us healthier, better looking, or covers our physical flaws. They get beautiful models and actresses to make consumers think the product is what makes the models and actresses attractive. FAMM is nonprofit supported by attorneys, judges, criminal justice experts and concerned citizens. • 24. Richard Plantagenet Essay For this project I would like to research the public opinion and reception of the political reforms made by Richard Plantagenet as both Duke of Gloucester and King of England. Upon his brother Edward IV s regaining of the throne in 1471, Richard gained properties and offices in the far north of England previously enjoyed only by lords of long standing families such as the Percys. As Duke of Gloucester, Richard served as an extension of royal power and was charged with constructing some semblance of order. Repeatedly, Richard used his close relationship with the king to settle disputes between nobility and local governments in favor of the latter. This suggests an affinity for the lesser classes that continued during his brief reign. In a previous research project I discussed Richard s 1484 Parliament and how it sought to benefit the general public over the nobility. While this argument was backed by fairly substantial evidence as to the intent of the laws and amendments, the public reaction to them was not addressed. Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to follow up on the effects of these parliamentary statutes as, after his death in 1485, many of Richard s reforms were eradicated or ... The True Magic Of The World Of Faerie When one thinks of the world of Faerie, they tend to imagine wondrous and fantastical places, however while they make occurrences they are rarely the bulk of the tale. In order to contrast the wonder and goodness there have to be places where it is absent or darkened and perverted. The true magic of the stories lies in the consolation, the restoring of these desolations, as J.R.R. Tolkien says in his essay On Fairy Stories, I would venture to assert that all complete fairy stories must have [the Consolation of the Happy Ending] ( On Fairy 85). Throughout the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, specifically Leaf by Niggle, Farmer Giles of Ham, and The Hobbit, both desolations, and the restoration of them are central motifs. Leaf by Niggle is short story, written by Tolkien, about a painter who is obsessed with completing his enormous painting of a tree, titled Leaf . His main world is his home and his painting. Before he can finish his painting though he is sent to a Workhouse. The Workhouse in this story is the desolation. For the majority of his time there he is sick and in the infirmary. The sickness in a way is another form of desolation. It is a figurative desolation where his physical health is damaged. At the workhouse poor Niggle got no pleasure out of life which is one of the clear signs that this is a desolation ( Leaf 109). The desolations work in a contrast to both the places of good magic and the home that the character, in this case Niggle, is used to. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Women s Female Leadership During The Renaissance The concept of the salon, originating in Italy during the Renaissance, was introduced to France in the seventeenth century and evolved into a three hundred year old tradition built exclusively on the strength of feminocentric rule. One of the most fascinating things about the institution of the salon is that its female leadership flourished during a period of history when women were not permitted to be involved in activities outside the boundaries of domesticity. According to Wolf, this paradoxical climate began to emerge during the Renaissance when the Salic law came into effect in fourteenth century. This Law denied women the right to inherit the family name, fortune or property. She was also denied the right to receive a public education. Women learned the only way to gain social status was through marriage, conducting cultural and social functions of the court in their husband s name. Young girls were raised to believe their primary role was to develop the attributes that would secure marrying into the right family. The ability to sing, dance, play multiple instruments was a mark of distinction. Music education especially for women was extremely important to those among the upper class. Some scholars believe men imposed the study of music on women...to prevent them from acquiring the kinds of knowledge, hence power, that men possessed. Contemporary Issues Involving Sex Crimes Contemporary Issues Involving Sex Crimes, Sexual Offenders, and Victims of Sexual Crimes Heather Anderson American Public University Abstract Sexual abuse is any uncontrolled sexual act in which a person is pressed or physically forced to engage against their will, or any non consensual sexual touching of a person. A sex offender is a person who has been convicted of certain sex crimes. A victim of a sexual crime is the subject of unwanted sexual offenses. In order for sexual activity to be all right, both people must want it to happen. When any person forces you to participate in any sexual act when you don t want to it is sexual assault.
