Similarities Between Tang Empress Wu And Hatshepsut
Comparing Ancient Female Rulers. Tang Empress Wu Zetian and Pharaoh Hatshepsut Tang
Empress Wu Zetian , Tang Destiny China (625 705 AD) she was the only female emperor in
Chinese history who actually ruled the whole country for almost half a century. Pharaoh
Hatshepsut, Queen of Egypt, 15th century BC ruled for 20 years as king (priests of Amun in
fact, declared her king). (Sayre, 2015, p. 83) while she reigned. Both Empress Wu and Pharaoh
Hatshepsut were great women rulers of their time as well as the longest female rulers Both
women ascended to power through the men in their families, Wu was born into a rich and noble
family and so she was taught play music, write, read Chinese classics and by the time she was
13 years of age she was known for her wit, beauty and intelligence so by age 14 she was the
concubine of Emperor Tai Sung and later the concubine of his son Kao Tsung who became
Emperor after his father died. When Emperor Kao had a severe stroke she took over administrative
duties equal to the emperor. Whereas Pharaoh Hatshepsut who was the daughter of Thutmose I and
his only child, she became queen when her father died when she was age 12 and then married her

The Welfare Of Foreign Workers
The welfare of foreign workers in Singapore is not taken care of seriously. Welfare refers to a
person or a groups happiness, health and well being. In this essay, I will be looking it from three
different perspectives of why the welfare is not taken care of seriously. Firstly, the treatment they
received, next, the food they eat and lastly the living conditions that they stay in.
In Singapore, there are around 1.32 million of foreign workers. Majority take up low skilled
jobs, for example construction workers and domestic helpers. These jobs are called the 3D jobs,
which means it is dirty, dangerous and difficult. They act as an invisible backbone to many well
developing and fast growing economic countries as they build our houses and roads which are
essential in a country. As they take up jobs that Singaporeans are not willing to do, we are obliged
to treat them better. Or at least give them the basic rights and respect. However, people do not treat
them the way they should.
There are many incidents of people mistreating foreign workers in Singapore. This includes not
giving them enough dignity and also abuse. In Unattended Foreign Maid, Migrant Workers
Singapore (2009), it mentions that a poster was pasted outside a local food court, with the words
THIS IS NOT THE WAITING AREA FOR FOREIGN MAID.UNATTENDED FOREIGN MAID
WILL BE HANDED TO THE SECURITY on it. (as cited in Huang, S.,Yeoh, B. S.A., 2015,
p.175). It clearly proves that locals do not treat them equally,

African Americans During The Nineteenth Century
Lynchings were a real threat to African Americans in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
They created a lot of fear in the African American community especially in this time period.
Between 1882 and 1969, 4,743 people lynchings occurred. In 1882, African Americans accounted
for forty six percent of lynchings. Yet from 1900 to 1910, African Americans represented eighty
nine percent of lynchings.
Lynching was a tool used by white people in this time period to try to control black people, and Ida
B. Wells helped bring international attention to this problem and fight to end it.
Lynching occurred most frequently in the deep southern states. One reason for the lynchings was
the resentment of southern whites when the slaves were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this, the federal government took control of the southern states not yet readmitted to the Union.
In order for the states to get readmitted to the Union, they needed to agree to observe the fourteenth
and fifteenth amendments. Amendment fourteen guaranteed all citizens the same rights without
regard to color. Amendment fifteen made it illegal to discriminate against people based on racein
voting rights. African Americans and northerners held a number of government positions during
this time, and southern whites did not really accept these governments. Southern whites used legal
and illegal means to fight the changes in the status of African Americans.(Royster 7,8)
There were some means that were legal at the time which were used to keep blacks from taking
advantage of their new freedom. Laws were put in place making requirements for voting other
than race, but it was clear these requirements were intended to stop blacks from voting. This was
the time period during which lynchings increased. Groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, the Knights
of the White Camelia, the Red Shirts, and the White Line participated in lynchings and other forms
of violence and intimidation. People outside these groups also lynched African Americans for a
variety of reasons such as intimidating blacks into not using their rights or punishing them for real
or alleged crimes. (Royster 8) The most likely people to be lynched were black males, although
some whites and occasionally

War I Was No Standard Blueprint For A War Poet
A war poet is a poet in time of and on the subject of war. A substantial number of important poets
were soldiers, writing about their experiences of war. A number of them died on the battlefield,
others like Siegfried Sassoon and Randall Jarrell survived but were scarred by their experiences,
and some were just witnesses to the war like Thomas Hardy, and all of this was reflected in their
poetry. Many poems were British and were published in newspapers and then collected into
anthologies. Several of these early anthologies were published during the war and were very
popular, though the tone of the poetry changed as the war progressed. (Santanu) There was no
standard blueprint for a war poet; the War Poets were from a variety of backgrounds. The whole
variety of backgrounds gives a clear idea that the impact of war in the trenches hit everyone who
served there. Forbidden from writing home with any degree of accuracy or truth about the life
they led, some put their thoughts into a diary that could be kept in secret. Others put their thoughts
into poems. Most of these writers came from middle class backgrounds; many had been to public
schools and served as officers at the front. (Truman) Poets that actually went to the trenches and
saw action, the reality appalled them, they were all either wounded or shell shocked, or both. They
wrote powerfully and poignantly about the effects of war on the bodies and minds of men, the
horror and the waste. These poems have largely

Characterism And Symbolism In Henry James s Washington Square
Henry James novel, Washington Square, tells the story of Catherine Sloper, a shy and extremely
modest woman who falls in love with a handsome and charming man, Morris Townsend, after
meeting him at the occasional party given by the aunt Mrs. Almond. Catherine, who is viewed by
everyone as a woman with a plain look and little personality, but a great dowry, becomes an easy
target for Morris, a man with the shadowy background. Unfortunately, for Catherine, her father, Dr.
Sloper also considers her neither clever nor beautiful and believes that Morris is only interested in
his daughter for her money. It is also evident throughout the novelthat Morris desires Catherine s
money and is not interested in her as a woman. When Catherine s father does not change his mind
towards the couple s marriageand Morris is convinced by Mrs. Penniman that he will never get a
penny from Dr. Sloper, he disappears within days after telling Catherine he wants to travel to New
Orleans for a business. After Morris abandons Catherine, she becomes more confident in herself,
discovers her inner strength, and gains control over her life.
In the beginning, James describes Catherine as not clever, stalwart, and extremely modest woman
with no trace of her mother s beauty. She was not ugly; she had simply plain, dull, gentle
countenance (James 8). James portrays Catherine as a woman who is willing to sacrifice her own
personal happiness to please others. She is of no interest to other characters in the

The Similarities Between Spanish And Basque In Catalunya
If you encounter a native of France or Spain, he will most likely speak French or Spanish, as the
national language of his home country. However, a notable number of people speak a cultural
language as well. The salience of these languages on the north vs. south side of the Pyrenees
Mountains is substantial. Catalan, spoken in northeastern Spainand southeastern France, and
Basque, a language isolate spoken in northern Spain and southwestern France, are minority
languages. Both are distinct from Castilian Spanish with their own literature, people, and culture.
While Basque and Catalan are prevalent in their respective Spanish autonomous communities, the

In Catalunya, Catalan is spoken fluently by 85% of the population with 97% claiming they
understand ( Generalitat de Catalunya. 6). This mutual intelligibility between Spanish and Catalan
suggests that Catalan is only a dialect of Castilian. While many people would like to say this is true,
and Spain under Franco attempted to integrate Catalan into mainstream Spanish culture this way
(Alguera 89), the Catalan is a distinct language with it s own lexicon, literature, grammar rules, etc.
It is a mandatory subject for children in public education in the autonomous community ( Catalans.
109). This contrasts the Basque Country where only 30% of the population is fully fluent in
Basque (Gobierno Vasco 17). Interestingly, although Basque is classified as a vulnerable language (
Data on the Basque Language. ) and is spoken by less than a third of the population, the highest
concentration of speakers exists in young adults, where nearly 60% of people age 16 to 24 claim
to be fluent (Gobierno Vasco 21). I think this trend is interesting because one would think the older
generations had the higher percentage of Basque speakers, and the lowest among the younger age
groups owing to assimilation to Spanish language and culture. Although Basque and Catalan are
recognized co official languages and enjoy considerable clout and use, the situation is very different
in France.
As the symbol for the national identity of the Basques, scholars have

How Did Langston Hughes Contribute To The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance stands as one of the greatest cultural, social and artistic movements in U.S.
history. This time period consisted of a migration of black Americans from rural Southern states
such as Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana to urban Harlem, New York. Originally called, the New
Negro Movement meaning, many believed this brought a new black cultural identity to an almost
all white culture. At this time, Langston Hughes, famous Harlem Renaissanceauthor, wrote many
controversial pieces about slavery, he mentions that they send him to eat in the kitchen (Hughes 1)
which describes how many slaves suffered in these days. For America, this movement helped
redefine how America saw the African Americancommunity, and it helped set the stage for the
Civil Rights Movement of 1950 1960. For Langston Hughes, his works reflected his love for jazz
music but also told the story of what he saw and heard back in the 1920 s to the 1930 s, what most
call, the Harlem Renaissance.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With whites standing as the more dominant race back then, many of them became curious of what
actually occurred in the daily life of a black man in Harlem. This curiosity lit the match for the
Harlem Renaissance to occur. Many African American poets, singers, and painters, like Langston
Hughes, came into the light at this time and joined in on the cultural tradition of African American
humor, music, and song; their work thus accords a privileged place for the many and varied sounds
of laughter in black America at this time (Chasar 58). The culture these African Americans brought
to an almost white country in every way other than color, deems worthy of more praise than it
received. The Harlem Renaissance brought a cultural explosion to a predominantly white nation.
The effects of this cultural blend became far reaching even though it gained far less recognition than

What Was The Role Of Women In The 18th Century
The Women present during the time period 1650 1800 were definitely the unsung heroes who not
only revolutionized France, but also made several contributions to Western and several other
societies. Women made several contributions mainly in literature, politics, visual arts, and society.
Women during 18th century made a remarkable contribution to literature, which involved the
philosophes assisting Diderot in the creation of the Encyclopedie in France, which has 72,000
entries that involve a wide variety of information on specific subjects such as political theory (Fiero,
144). Additionally, Chatelet produced an annotated French translation of Newton s Principia which
was regarded as a monumental achievement (Fiero, 144). On the political spectrum, Mary
Wollstonecraft, from Britain, pushed for the equality of women by writing the Vindications of the
Rights of Woman, which in turn, challenged the female stereotypes made by misogynistic males
and proved that women are equal to men. Additionally, Wollstonecraft

There are political leaders that support capital punishment. Names such as, Hilary Clinton, Joe
Biden and Stephen Joseph Harper. The common belief is that capital punishment reduces crime as
well as brings justice to the criminals and the innocent. It acts as a way of eliminating the problem
by killing the person that committed the crimeand ensures the safety of the society. Stephen Joseph
Harper stated that capital punishmentis appropriate and a double murderer should not be repatriated
back into society. Joe Biden believes that capital punishment is necessary but it has to be
implemented in a way that is consistent with our values as Americans. Hilary Clinton supports it
but has stated that it s a complex issue that needs to be limited.

Key Economic Concepts Of Health Care Essay
There are 10 key economic concepts of health care. Each of the economic concepts is important
when evaluating the different issues related to health care such as the increasing cost of health care.
Henderson (2015), list the 10 concepts as follows: scarcity and choice, opportunity cost, marginal
analysis, self interest, markets and pricing, supply and demand, competition, efficiency, market
failure, and comparative, advantage. The concept scarcity and choice address the issues related to
the limited supply resources and the need to economize (Henderson, 2015). An illustration of the

that are considered scarce (Henderson, 2015). The supply and demand concept is used as a tool
in performing economic analysis (Henderson, 2015). Competition creates an environment where
resource owners are forced to use their resources to promote the highest possible satisfaction of
society (Henderson, 2015). Efficiency is used to measure how well resources are being used to
promote social welfare (Henderson, 2015). Market failure is when the free market fails to promote

Civil War Reconstruction Research Paper
I bet you know about the Civil War but, what about the Reconstruction time period? The
Reconstruction time period was another important part of the Civil War. The reconstruction was the
time period after the Civil War. The Civil War was the war against the north and the south over
slavery and many other different ways of life. The Civil War pretty much smoothed out the
significant differences between the north and south but, that did not mean that the north and south
got along well. The reconstruction started in 1865 and ended in 1877. The Reconstruction time
period left a gigantic impact on northern and southern americans.
During the reconstruction time period the south did not get along very well with the north. The
southerners needed help rebuilding their land. In the Ducksters article it mentioned, Much of the
southern United States were destroyed during the Civil War. Because of this, the north felt that
they should help them rebuild their land. They felt this way because they had just won the war so
they wanted to make it equal. Another reason is they were part of the same country now so they
kind of had to. Those are some facts about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

When I Decide To Be The Only Girl Essay
Deciding to be the only girl on the wrestling team and the failures I experienced therein, have

to follow my own /opinions even when others may not agree. Throughout my high schoolyears,

As the only girl on the wrestling team, it was challenging at first. The guys were stronger than me,
they were weary to touch me, afraid that they would hurt me. However, one thing they did that I

Eugenics, A New Science Of Heredity
Eugenics, a new science of heredity was first introduced in 1883, brought about to address the
budding fears and threats to the purity and fitness of the British race. A fear brought upon by
events such as the Boer War in 1899, forced Britain to question the spectrum of degeneracy within
the population and resolve the issue of bringing the British and White raceback to strength, unified
and fit. Sir Francis Galtondefined eugenicsas the study of agencies under social control that may
improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations either physically or mentally . It was
believed that differences in mental, moral and physical traits between individuals, as well as races
were hereditary, producing those who were deemed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
University Students. At this time, America provided a clear example of how race greatly impacted
on the eugenics movement. The United States came across a lot more racialist than Britain; the key
racial targets being the American Negro and various portions of white races emigrating from
Eastern Europe. In a much more patriotic and chauvinistic country this threatened to overwhelm the
superior white race, forcing the development of new immigration and sterilisation laws.
Britain was just as supportive in believing in the dominant White race, however was never as
extreme in it racialism. British Society was ethnically more or less homogenous and therefore it
had not experienced the considerable amount of non white emigrating people than it did in later
decades. . The movement in Britain was marked by variations on existing racial themes, instead of
new compositions. Racism figured a lot less distinctly and was of less importance to British
Eugenics, identifying the new science as primarily class based, focusing more on the biological
fitness of the different classes. Consequently, one could argue that race wasn t awfully important to
the movement, but race figured much more markedly to the eugenics movement in other countries

Steps that Lead to the Revolutionary War
Independence from Britain did not come easily. It took many years and battles to break off the
colonies from Britain. Many desires drove the colonies to a violent war, and it all started with
the following: In 1763, a peace treaty had just been signed. This was called the Peace of Paris
which ended a long series of costly conflicts between Britain and France during the French and
Indian wars. Because France had lost, they were forced to give all the American territory to
Great Britain. After Great Britain took control of the region, King George III did not want to
fight another war in America so he forbid colonial settlement on the western lands. This was
called the Proclamation line of 1763. This proclamation angered many colonies since they
believed that a king who ruled across the ocean could not determine the colonist needs and had no
right to limit where they could settle. This was the beginning of many troubles in the colonies. It
was not until 1764 when Britain started to interfere with the colonies. The colonies had some
independence so they were not used to being told what to do. Because the British government had
gone in debt fighting France, they decided that the colonies had to help pay for their own defense.
To raise this money, parliament made a new law, sugar act. It required payment of a tariff on
imported items such as molasses, sugar, coffee and certain wines. During this time, tariffs were
used to regulate trade; however, the colonist felt this was just

Joseph Conrad Sexism
Racism is incredibly evident to readers in Joseph Conrad s famous novel, Heart of Darkness.
Readers are able to easily identify the repulsive treatment of African Americans through
protagonist character Marlow s eyes. Many are repelled by the incredibly grotesque description of
the native Africans as savages . However, the underlying theme of sexism is often overlooked in
Conrad s writing. He uses his characters to express his own opinions on a womans place in society
or lack thereof. Though this book was written over 100 years ago, it is incredibly ironic how
relevant this trend is to day. Present day America pushes so hard to distance itself from racial
prejudices whereas prejudices against women are not only frequently recurring in society,... Show

Contrary to many beliefs, feminists don t want to walk around shirtless. We don t hate men. We
don t want to be treated like men. We have nothing against women who wear dresses and are stay at
home moms. We also have nothing against women who put their careers first and don t want to
start a family. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people, and can be whatever they
want to be. Theodore Roosevelt once said stating a problem without a solution is just whining! ,
and that s not what I want to do here. So I am going to suggest a simple solution that if taken to
heart, could affect all of mankind. Ready? Let women be whatever the hell they want to be...and
respect them for it! Because a woman who stays at home and raises a family is not a lazy gold
digger. Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and not one to be undermined.
But on the other hand, a woman who chooses not to have children and to focus on her career is
not self centered. She is just as smart and driven as any man doing the exact same thing. It s
essential that as a society we move past the sexist mindset that we see in Heart of Darkness. We re
not stuck in the Victorian Era. Women and men must understand how we can all benefit when
given equality. It sets us all free and allows us to progress. Imagine this country s potential if we

Coastal Erosion is a process at Muriwai that gradually wears away the rock particles of the earth s
surface, transporting them to another location. There are many types of processes that cause
erosion at Muriwai such as wave erosion, wind erosion and wave refraction. ... Show more content

These types of erosion have caused the formation of several phenomena at Muriwai.
Motutara Island (stack) was produced by the formation of two caves on either side of the headland
forming an arch and the roof slowly eroding away due to vertical erosion.
Fisherman s Rock was produced by cliff retreat when undercutting stones are thrust at the cliff by
wave action.
The blowhole was formed by vertical, hydraulic and mechanical erosion causing the cracks and
fissures to enlarge over time to produce this hole.
Types of wave erosion operating on the headland have produced the cave.
Wave Refraction is an important process as it influences wave erosion on Otakamiro headland
and on the beach at Muriwai (refer to Diagram 1). Wave Transportation (Longshore Drift) varies
spatially due to wave refraction. It is the process by which waves alter their course as they interact
in shallow water with the seabed along the coastline. This process produces wave erosion, which
focuses its energy on Otakamiro Point.
Diagram 1
Constructive, Destructive and Dissipative are the types of waves that operate at Muriwai that cause
erosion.
Dissipative waves are the waves usually found at Muriwai they lose their energy before they reach
the shore as they usually break on the offshore bar. Constructive waves are long waves with little
height that leave material at the top of the beach, building it up.
Destructive waves are erosive

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams: The Evolution of Management Thinking
M.Samson and R.Daft, (2012) Management: Fourth Asia Pacific Edition, Cengage, pp.79 80
Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, founders of MG+BW, have had the mantra Break the rules
wherever possible! from the beginning. Following the outdated rules governing the upholstery
manufacturing industry when they started their company in 1989 would have put them on a path to
destruction. Few, if any, managementphilosophies taking hold in the larger business world were on
the minds of the manufacturing executives. Industry wide, supply chain management and customer
service was a joke. Total Quality Management (TQM), let alone Customer Resource Management

MG+BW uses solid kiln dried hardwoods, logged using sustainable methods, to construct their
frames. Gold and Williams are convinced that using cheap materials only hurts companies in the
end.
Pay factory workers by the hour.
To meet delivery promises to customers, MG+BW needed to run a more efficient operation so that
the company instituted an incentive based pay structure at its Taylorville, North Carolina factory.
Most production is done by hand, so instead of hourly wages, factory employees get paid for each
piece they complete. When they work faster, everybody wins. Quality assurance meetings involving
representatives from the factory floor are held regularly to identify process improvements.
Full employee benefits are options.
By industry standards, MG+BW s approach to benefits is pretty unusual. Apparently offering full
benefits to employees and generous benefits to spouses, partners and other family members is
downright radical. For its employees, MG+BW also built a health conscious cafГ©, a gym and
indoor walking track, and the first on site daycare ever to exist in the furniture industry. College
scholarships are awarded annually to the employee s children as well.
Cater to the masses
Uninterested in catering to the lowest common denominator, MG+BW was the first in its industry
to target a niche market. Gold loves to say, Our emphasis is on taking care of a small and highly

Hercules As A Youthful Hercules
Standing eight feet tall in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a marble statue known as a youthful
Hercules. Sculpted during the Early Imperial period, with several restorations made in the 17th
century, this Roman masterpiece dominates the room with its godlike essence. Chiseled with great
detail, Hercules is holding a skinned lion in his left hand while his right hand is gripping a club
behind his back. The statue stands with confidence and empowerment, capturing the moment right
after Hercules skinned the Nemean beast, transporting the viewer directly to the scene, while at the
same time also demonstrating Hercules emotional state. Upon examining the amalgam of Hercules
qualities such as his physical characteristics, pose, and expression, the sculptureleaves the viewer
with the impression that Hercules is the epitome of the ideal man.
Originally inspired by Greek Myth, Hercules was sent on an impossible task to kill a Nemean Lion.
After figuring out his bat was useless, he then proceeded to strangle the lion to death with his bare
hands, and then skinning the dead beast. In the sculpture, Hercules weight is shifted towards the
tree trunk which Romans used to support their sculptures, and the club swings behind his right arm.
By having the club swing behind him, it emphasizes Hercules masculinity by highlighting the fact
that Hercules, with his bare hands, was able to defy the seemingly impossible and kill the beast all
on his own without help from weaponry.

Summary Of Ray Bradbury s Tuft Of Flowers And After Apple...
A discovery can lead to a change in perspective on life, which can come from a better
understanding of the self, which can form from an individual s experience. These ideas are
exemplified through a range of written and visual techniques, and explored in Robert Frosts poems,
Tuft of flowers and After Apple Picking . Which both create moralistic experiences through
challenging responders to acknowledge unplanned discoveries of the humancondition.
Also the exploration of Ray Bradbury s Short Story, The Lake, in which it creates a vivid picture
of how childhood can often be hard and misunderstood. Discoveries have the ability to be intensely

Final sleep is certainly one interpretation of the long sleep that the poet contrasts with human sleep.
The sleep of the woodchuck is the sleep of winter, and winter, in the metaphoric language of
seasons, has strong associations with death. He is done with apple picking , suggests finality; a
sudden unpleasant realisation that he has not grasped all that he set out to achieve. Subsequently,
Frost wants individuals to evaluate their life and discover their dreams and meaning in their life.
Childhood is a time for making new discoveries, but it is also a time that can lend itself to
tragedy. The short story, the lake by Ray Bradbury creates a sombre tone and first person point
of view not only creates a person, but a vivid picture of childhood in general, how it is often hard
and misunderstood. The theme of re discovery is prominent in the story for Harold as when tally

Native American Natives
Native Americans Native Americans roamed the land and did as they pleased, almost ancient
technology. That was until white settlers came in and took away their land and buffalo. Whites
forced them to adapt to white culture and learn how to farm wheat, and go to school. Whites even
put them on indian reservations that had poor soil so their farming techniques were difficult..
Indians were nomads, they chased their food and never stayed in one home for too long. They
used older technology like smoke signals. The finding of the buffalo was remarkable, they could kill
the game and use every single part of it. Indians would use the bladder as canteens and the tendons
as strings for their bows. It provided them with multiple luxuries, and when... Show more content on

They even tried to say that they were helping the Indians by making them downsize. They would
say that the annuities they gave me made up fro the smaller land. Whites did this with the Dawes
Act an act that allowed authorization of president to move Native Americans onto reservations.
To make matters worse, they then enforced Indians to basically become whites they could do
this with Assimilation. Assimilation is trying to get one to change or become like one s culture.
Many settlers, thought it was actually fair because they get 160 and so do the indians plus
annuities yearly. White settlers probably thought they got the short end of the deal because
indians got land and money. They thought they were helping the Indians with their farming and
newer technology. That the killing of the buffalo and Assimilation would help indians be better
off. Native Americans were treated extremely unfairly. They were thrown onto reservations, and
we killed their buffalo. Some may it was justified, but it wasn t. Imagine whenever people come
over to your house uninvited you feel kinda like what are you doing here? So just picture their
situation of all misery, and just for gold and silver. We did need them to move along with us or

PepsiCo gained entry to India in 1988 by creating a joint venture with the Punjab government

But an Indian parliamentary committee, in 2004, backed up CSE s findings and a government

Coke and PepsiCo opposed the move, arguing that lab tests aren t reliable enough to detect minute
traces of pesticides in complex drinks. On December 7, 2004, India s Supreme Court ruled that
both PepsiCo and competitor The Coca Cola Company must label all cans and bottles of the
respective soft drinks with a consumer warning after tests showed unacceptable levels of residual

Both companies continue to maintain that their products meet all international safety standards
without yet implementing the Supreme Court ruling.[citation needed] As of 2005, The Coca

PepsiCo has also been alleged to practice water piracy due to its role in exploitation of ground
water resources resulting in scarcity of drinking water for the natives of Puthussery panchayat in the
Palakkad district in Kerala, India. Local residents have been pressuring the government to close
down the PepsiCo unit in the village.

levels of pesticides in their drinks. Both PepsiCo and The Coca Cola Company maintain that their

Effect Of Osmosis On Potato
Discussion:
Effects of Osmosis on Potato Cell:
In the first experiment of the Osmosis and Potato Lab, two slices of potatoes were used to analyze
how the extracellular fluid of a cell membrane effects the net movement of free water molecules in
and out of the cell. The first potato slice was used as the control, while the other potato slice was
sprinkled with salt, after leaving both slice to set for 10 minutes, the potato slices with the salt was
more dry and shriveled than the control. In this situation, the potato slice with the salt outside of the
selectively permeable membrane created a hypertonic environment meaning that the free water
molecule concentration inside the cell is greater than the outside of the cell membrane. This causes

This is important because it shows how the cell membrane permits molecules from entering and
leaving the cell based on its size, polarity, and electric charge. In a cell, substances will diffusion
down a concentration gradient meaning that it will move from a high concentrated area to a low
concentrated area until there is an equilibrium (Reece, 2014, pg 131). Small non polar molecules
such as oxygen or carbon dioxide will diffuse through the cell membrane while polar molecules such
as water and sugar will have difficulty passing through without the help of transport proteins. The
cell membrane also permits ionic molecules and proteins from passing through the membrane
without the help of energy or transport mechanism. My group hypothesized that solutes that are
small and nonpolar will diffuse through the artificial membrane. To test this hypothesis our group
placed Albumin, Glucose, Fructose, Lactose, Maltose, Starch, NaCl, and MgCl into eight separate
dialysis tubes and soaked them in D.I. water to see if the solutes will pass through. After soaking
them for about an hour, we took the D.I. water and tested them using the biuret, benedict, IKI, silver
nitrate, and sodium fluoride test. If the solution of the water changes color it means that the solute
had diffused through the artificial membrane. For albumin and starch they both

1952.When Baca was only a child, he was abandoned by his parents. He lived with his
grandmother for a few years after that and was later placed in an orphanage. However, he ended
up living in the streets and was arrested for drug possession when he was twenty one years old.
He then spent six and a half years in prison. This is where he taught himself to read and write. He
composed many poems during his time in jail. His style of writing is also heavily influenced by
his life experiences. Baca s poem I am offering this poem has four stanzas and seven lines in each
stanza. Each stanza ends in the same verse I loveyou . The entire poem exudes the feelingof
yearning and infatuation. Baca is said to have composed this poem during his time in prison,

necessity to his beloved even though he wasn t there. This is why he uses a metaphor to relate
his poem to a pot full of yellow corn . When he says I love you again in the second stanza. It
sounds more urgent then it did in the first stanza. In the third stanza, Baca urges his beloved to

Electroniccircuits are then used to represent Boolean operations. Since almost all of mathematics
can be reduced to Boolean operations, a sufficiently fast electronic computer is capable of sloving
almost any mathematical problems (and the majority of information processing problems that can
be translated into mathematical ones). This basic idea, which made modern digital computers
possible, was formally identified and explored by Claude E. Shannon.
Computers cannot solve all mathematical problems. Alan Turing identified which problems could
and could not be solved by computers, and in doing so founded theoretical computer science.
When the computer is finished calculating the problem, the result must be displayed to the user as
output through output devices like light bulbs, LEDs, monitors, beamers and printers.
Novice users, especially children, often have difficulty understanding the important idea that the
computer is only a machine, and cannot think or understand the words it displays. The computer is
simply performing a mechanical lookup on preprogrammed tables of lines and colors, which are
then translated into arbitrary patterns of light by the output device. It is the human brain which
recognizes that those patterns form letters and numbers, and attaches meaning to them. All that
existing computers do is manipulate electrons that are logically equivalent to ones and zeroes; there

Swedish Food In Northern Europe
So what exactly is Swedish food? Many may think of fish and Swedish meatballs. Scandinavia is
a part of Northern Europe surrounded by the Baltic Sea; this includes Sweden, Finland, and
Norway. Knowing the history of the region explains a lot about the foods that still exist there
today. Vikings who inhabited the area were some of the first people to develop food preservation
methods. By salting, dehydrating, and curing the fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish, the warriors
were able to spend less time hunting and gathering, and more time invading territories as far south
as the Mediterranean. Since they traveled so far, cooking influences from all over Europe are still
apparent in the modern Swedish diet. This includes German pastries, French soups, and English

Attack on the World Trade Center

headed to their jobs, all the traffic going in and out of the World Trade Center. Millions of the
people were in morning rush hour on their way from their homes to work. The World Trade Center

after 9:00 a.m., the sky was not sunny and clear as it had just been minutes before. There was
smoke, dust, and debris everywhere. Two jet airplanes, hijacked by religious terrorists, crashed
into the twin towers of the World Trade Center and blowup. The impact left a gasping, burning
hole in both of the towers, killing hundreds of people almost instantly and trapping thousands
more in higher floors. The collision caused a gigantic explosion that showered burning debris over
surrounding buildings and the streets below. A third plane hit the Pentagon just outside
Washington D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. America was under
attack. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington D.C.,
including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. This lead to millions of people trapped
with no way of escaping the twin towers. They knew they would not make it back home to their

Daily Life In Native Americans
For Native Americans, life prior to contact with the Europeans would in many ways starkly
contrast what would become of their societies after European influence. While one of the most
apparent features of Native American societies included their great diversity, daily life for the
Native Americans had some common key elements. For one, subsistence practices to feed their
tribes must have made up most of their days, because in Native American societies it is stated in
the book that, there were no beggars among them . According to Khan Academy, in 5000 BC, the
domestication of corn (maize) would spur the development of agriculture, which would become a
key feature needed for settled civilizations. This would change daily lives of Natives from a
reliance on hunting and gathering to a reliance more on agricultural practices. Depending on the
location of the society, daily life contrasted. Natives adapted to their environment and their methods
of subsistence adapted to it as well (fishing, hunting, gathering, agricultural practices). For example,
in more arid areas, Natives survived by hunting bison and following herds of animals. Pueblo
people in the Southwest adapted by creating irrigation systems to provide water for their
agriculture. Overall, it was the men that spent their daily lives hunting and fishing. Some major
crops included maize (corn), squash, and beans. Another key element of Native American life
included religious practices. Their daily lives would ve consisted

The Biological Processes Of Dairy Cattle Essay
In today s world, many infants are allergic to certain proteins naturally present in cow s milk. Due
to the huge volume of milk products consumed by the human race, there is a need to get rid of this
allergy causing protein and eliminate this allergic reaction. AgResearch has investigated ways to
manipulate the genetic material in dairy cattle by using the process of GeneKnockdown , with the
aim to create a cow which produces milk which doesn t contain the proteinresponsible for the
allergic reactions, the Beta lacto globulin protein or BLG . Scientists have been successful in
creating Daisy the Cow, who is a cloned calf genetically modified to produce milk which does not
contain the BLG protein. I will be discussing the biological processes behind the cloning of Daisy
the cow, and the decisions made by scientists to use methods for genetically modifying the cow s
genes from whom Daisy was cloned, for the benefit of humans.
There are specific reasons AgResearch used processes like Gene Knockdown and cloning by
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer SCT to get the result they wanted. The stakes are high to ensure
the cloned cow Daisy survives and is healthy. Therefore AgResearch needed to choose procedures
which were most likely to yield successful results. The whole project and process cost around 50
million dollars to produce one cow, and with historical success rates very low they could

Twelfth Night Gender Analysis

Shakespeare Term Essay
Gender is one of the most prevalent themes in William Shakespeare s comedy, Twelfth Night. In
Twelfth Night, the play is based on Viola, a twin who gets separated away from her brother in a
shipwreck. To find work, Viola undertakes the disguise of Cesario, a young male who wants to
work in the household of Duke Orsino. Orsino has been personally dealing with the love he feels
for Lady Olivia, who refuses to entertain any man since she is dealing with the loss of her brother
and father. In Orsino s efforts to have Cesario facilitate love between himself and Olivia, Olivia
ends up falling in love with Cesario. Viola has also found herself falling in love with Orsino, thus
creating a love triangle between these three. In this love triangle, Shakespeare exhibits a challenge
and a reinforcement of the gender roles that were present in the setting he personally wrote the play
from. Through Olivia s attraction to Cesario, he challenges these gender roles and through Orsino s
attraction to Cesario, he reinforces these gender roles.

to give viewers an inside look on real life without being there to experience it firsthand. Often,
directors use these films to persuade the audience into taking their side regarding various societal
issues. Filmmakers help sway their targeted audience by using different codes and conventions to
appeal their opinion effortlessly to the viewers. It can be seen in the films Kony 2012 by director
James Russel, 2002 s Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore and 1922 s Nanook of the North
by Robert J. Flaherty, that directors often use subjectivity rather than... Show more content on

Moore manipulates many facts throughout the documentary. For example, he edits Charlton
Heston s speech regarding his support of the second amendment, in order to make it seem as if it
was shortly after the Columbine High School shooting when in reality, it was further down the
road (Bradsaw, 2002). Furthermore, the director strategically set up an interview with Heston
while he was suffering from Parkinson s disease so he could ultimately take advantage of him
for the sake of the film (Bradsaw, 2002). While he explores many different methods, Moore often
takes on social issues in a comedic fashion to help persuade the viewers. For instance, in one clip
he uses a cartoon as a representation of the civil rights movement in the United States, amplifying
the ignorance of the counter view. Moore also uses Noddies and Reverse Questions in his
interviews to belittle the interviewee and create a more obvious argument for the audience to side
with. Lastly, Michael Moore uses video montages combined with irony to create a negative image
surrounding America s gun control laws. In this clip, Moore shows violence and terror that the
United States has been involved in, all the while playing Louis Armstrong s What a Wonderful
World , to create a thought within the viewer that with stricter gun control laws, none of this would

Analysis Of Why Millennials CanT Grow Up
The Millennial Generation is earning 20 percent less than the Generation X and the Baby Boomers.
Psychotherapist at NYU (according to the university s website), Brooke Donatone argues in her
article, Why Millennials Can t Grow Up that millennials experience extended adolescence that
delays adulthood (Donatone 1). The author believes that the reasons for that happening are parents
by their helicopter parenting and the economy because there are less high paying jobs that allow
millennials to be financially independent. Throughout the article, Donatone explains that there is
evidence on how it is not millennials fault that they are experiencing delayed adulthood. Therefore,
it is safe to assume that her intended audience are the parents... Show more content on

His article also contrasts Donatone s second flaw of unprofessional tone because he
continuously stays professional and mindful of his audience that comes from world of business
professionals. Donatone proposes that the reason for millennials struggles with adulthood, like
working, dealing with people or even doing laundry is caused by helicopter parenting; however,
she uses Amy, a girl that comes from a family with moderate wealth, to wrongly generalize that
all millennials come from similar background. It is especially inappropriate and unfair to
generalize about this topic because she talks about such a big and diverse group that is
millennial generation, and not everyone comes from the same background. Donatone shows that
Amy comes from middle class family when she says She finally had to dump the part time job,
was still unable to do laundry, and often stayed up until 2 a.m. to complete her homework because
she didn t know how to manage her time without her parents ... (Donatone 1). In order for
someone to be able to drop their job they need someone that can help with their financial needs and
wants, therefore it is safe to assume that Amy comes from a family with moderate wealth that is
able to support those needs and wants. The author s moment when she generalizes that all
millennials are like Amy and come from similar background is when she states It s easy to
generalize an entire population by its

Psychological Concepts In The Lion King
The movie The Lion King demonstrates exceeding amounts of psychological concepts, theories
and principles as shown in the movie. There is a few of which we talked about in class that takes
place during the movie in which will be stated below, even though there are tons more that could be
talked about. The creators of the filmknew what they were doing when they were putting together
the animation movie, sliding in all the psychological concepts as possible in a little childs film.
When a child is watching the movie they do not think about, or even know any of the concepts
/theories on what is going on. These are things such as the prosocial behavior, guilt/shame,

Mufasa was the brother that was more extroverted, he had the throne, the strength, and all the
good looks. Throughout the scenes in the movie you could see Mufasa had a personality of
someone that was a strong, proud, and the dominant ruler of his kingdom. He was willing to
protect his kingdom prepared to fight when he thought Scar had challenged him. He did all of
that until his death, dying when recusing Simba from the stampede of wildebeest. He puts his
trust into his brother who very easily betrayed him. Scar was the more introverted brother, he
was much smarter than Mufasa, but didn t have the looks, and his longing for the throne made
him very deceptive. He produced the plan to at first kill his nephew, and then his brother. The
first plan to kill Simba was by tricking him into going out into the elephant graveyard to be
attacked and eaten by the hyenas. When that didn t work he came up with the plan to kill
Mufasa by not actually having to do it himself, giving the hyenas instructions when to create the
stampede in which he had placed Simba right down in the middle of, knowing Mufasa would try
to save him, because that is his son. These two brothers were very different Scar had a dark side
going on while Mufasa was more of the bright light. One could say the message is that it it is
brawn over brains which gets you money, power, and respect in the world we are living in

Why Should A Foolish Marriage Vow By John Dryden
The authors and compositions I most enjoyed This course Classic English Poetry: Ages, Authors,
Texts (16th 20th centuries) in such a short time has introduced me to many and many amazing
poets and incredible pieces of poetry. Having been presented such a huge amount of different
compositions, it was quite difficult at first to choose those I liked the most. But taking the time to
think it all through, I managed to narrow down the list to my two favorite poems of two different
authors. The first composition I would want to talk about is a song from MarriageA La Mode Why
Should a Foolish Marriage vow by John Dryden. Talking about the content of this poem, I d like to
point out that its theme is marriage, marital vows, love and the degree... Show more content on

The theme of this piece of poetry, as I see it, is aging, growing up or maybe even growing old and
getting to the calmer and slower pace of life. The author keeps saying that the main character
(though he uses we it can supposedly be Lord Byron himself) will ...go no more a roving / So
late into the night (1 2) because, although he might still be able to do all the things he used to do,
it might be a moment for him when he needs to stop as his time for play might be coming to an

Foreshadowing In A Tale Of Two Cities
Trees being cut down by the woodmen in the beginning of Tale of Two Cities is an important
symbol in the book. It foreshadows the violence to come towards the end of the book. It is likely
enough that rooted in the woods of France and Norway, there were growing trees, when that
sufferer was put to death, already marked by the woodman, Fate, to come down and be sawn into
boards, to make a certain movable framework with a sack and a knife in it, terrible in history. (2)
This references the upcoming violence of the revolution. Most importantly, the invention of the
guillotine. It shows the beginning of how this deadly machine was created and it symbolises the
woodman as fate. At the beginning of the book, Dicken foreshadows the use of the farmer s cart in
the revolution. The narrator predicts that the carts will become tumbrils as the revolution begins. To
use them to haul France s aristocrats to their death by guillotine. It is likely that in the rough

They represent the spilling of blood and the upcoming revolution. From the red glow of the
sunset to the road mender s hat. The carriage slid down hill, with a cinderous smell, in a cloud of
dust, the red glow departed quickly. (105) These all symbolize the blood being spilt because of
the revolution. Even the spilled wine in the streets of Paris is a reference. They all foreshadow
the revolution. The fight between Madame Defarge and Miss Pross is significant due to a
symbolic rivalry. The two cities in the Tale of Two Cities are London and Paris. Throughout
history France and England had a rough history and the fight between Pross and Defarge
symbolizes it. You might from your appearance, be the wife of Lucifer, Nevertheless, you shall
not get the better of me. I am an English woman. (350) In this scene, it proves the loyalty that Miss
Pross shows to Lucie and her family. It ultimately puts an end to Madame Defarge s hunt for

Sears Core Competencies

Sears Core Competencies Examined
All companies have core competencies that they use to differentiate their company, product, or
service from the competition, Sears is no exception. Also, it is common for a company s core
competencies to change, as their industry progresses through phases and shifts its emphasis
between product and process innovations (Regis University, 2011), Sears is no exception. Yet,
when a company s core competencies become misaligned and no longer supports their strategic
intent the business is in danger of becoming obsolete (Regis University, 2011), as their customers
no longer perceive the unique benefits the company has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By 1895, Sears s mail order business was gaining market acceptance and the Sears catalog
expanded to 532 items consisting of soup to nuts products for their customers (Sears Archive,
2012), supporting the theory that early innovators do not have a restriction on what they bring to
market (Innovation Zen, 2006). Sears s core competencies are innovation, selling, advertising, and
merchandising (Sears Archive, 2012).
By 1906 Sears was operating the largest mail order plant in the world, but that necessitated that
the company s focus shift from design dominance to products and process. Sears has entered the
transitional stage of the Abernathy Utterback Model. Sears is tasked with the need to handle mass
orders economically and efficiently, and develops the time scheduling system , which brings chaos
to the mail order industry and defines a significant core competence (Sears Archive, 2012). Around
the same time, Sears s customers are shifting their focus to quality, which drives the need to
replace the fancy Sears catalog with a factual based catalog. Sears s core competencies are
innovation, mail order process, quality products, perceived value, and factual based advertisement
(catalog).
By 1920, the landscape is changing from rural dwellers to city dwellers and people living in cities
outnumber rural dwellers for the first time. Sears has emerged as the dominant design of mail order
for both rural and city dwellers, but increasing competition from

Model Simulation And Fire Model For Biological Neurons
Introduction The human nervous system is composed of billions of neurons that respond to stimuli,
conduct impulses, and communicate with other cells. Dendrites, a branched extension of a nerve
cell, receives information from other neurons. The soma, or cell body, is responsible for whether or
not the neuronsends out signals consisting of a short electrical pulse called an action potential, or
spike. This spike is carried out by axons, delivering it to other neurons, and has a duration of a
few milliseconds and an amplitude of 100 mV. A biological neuron model is a mathematical
description of the properties of nerve cells that is designed to accurately describe and predict
biological processes. One way to do so is by using the integrate and fire model which displays a
trajectory of fluctuating potential versus time in the sub threshold regime and outputs spikes that
are triggered when the membrane potential reaches its threshold. Once this threshold is reached, the
membrane potential is then reset, allowing the process to start again.
Model Simulation and Graphs In creating the leaky integrate and fire model, using the information
given, such as the parameters and threshold we created an if statement within a for loop (see
Appendix A for complete code). The code was set with parameters н‘… and нњЏ equal to one and
нђј0 equal to two. Setting the step size to .01 and calling for 600 steps, the code was able to
produce eleven spikes. The code provides a for loop which takes the

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
In today s society, it is possible for a woman to achieve nearly anything; however, for a woman of
yesterday s society, bringing world wide recognition to the many faces of prejudice is an
accomplishment of its own. Author Harper Lee has had the honor to accomplish just that through
her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a moving and inspirational story about a young girl learning the
difference between the good and the bad of the world. In the small town of Monroeville,
Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Growing up, Harper Lee had three
siblings: two sisters and an older brother. She and her siblings grew up modestly. Even though
money was not as much of a problem for her family as it was for others of their time, her father
never did spoil her and her siblings. Lee and her brother attended a public grammar school in
Monroe County, and Harper Lee continued to further her education after her high school
graduation. She attended Huntingdon College for a year and then transferred to the University of
Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she studied law from 1945 to 1949. While she was at the University
of Alabama, she was also an exchange student at Oxford University in England for a year.
Harper Lee always had a passion for writing. She wrote articles and satires for her college
newspaper. Months before completing her law degree, Lee moved to New York to pursue a
writing career. Her first job was as an airlines reservations clerk. Although she never stopped writing

Stereotypes Of A Manly Person
I grew up as a pretty reserved person in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. I knew what happened outside
of my home, but I was not exposed to it on the daily, or even yearly, basis. Growing up, I saw
fights on TV, in movies, and heard about them from my friends. I never really irritate people,
except close friends, so no one cares to fight me. Also, I would probably lose. My friends always
tell me how annoying I am. Luke is annoying, a friend said. In my seventeen years of life, I have
only had a few physical fights, and they have all been between a few individuals. One fine
evening at a friends house we were hanging out and everything was well. It was about 1:00 a.m.
and a certain individual who attends Central (we will call him Arthur) had fallen asleep. The rest
of us were in one room playing a video game while Arthur was laying on the floor of a different
room. Another friend of mine (we will call him Joe) thought it would be funny to... Show more

Through television and media, we see a scale from weak to manly man. Although everyone is
told to be okay with who they are, I can guarantee a majority would choose to be a manly man.
That is who the girls are impressed by, and that is who most would like to be. However, those are
all physical characteristics, which is only a percentage of being a man. A large portion of a man
should be defined by his mentality and his actions. My best opinion of a man can only be
defined by another Spongebob reference. In the Spongebob movie, Spongebob and Patrick take
on a deathly journey for two reasons: to save Bikini Bottom, and to prove that they are men.
These two animated characters perfectly describe the mentality of a man who is not afraid to
stand up for what he believes in. By standing up for what they believe in, I mean risking their
lives. I do not mean standing outside a political rally holding a sign fighting for safe

Rhetorical Devices Used In A Modest Proposal
In any piece of literature, consideration of the audience is key in assuring that not only the overall
theme, but also the desired reaction to the work is attained. In terms of analysis, identifying the
audience may lead to greater insight, as depending on individual traits and beliefs, responses can
vary wildly from one group of people to the next, and in identifying the audienceand their
respective feedback, one can hone in on the author s intended purpose of the work and judge
whether or not the work in itself is effective in communicating its point. In Jonathan Swift s
controversial essay A Modest Proposal, he achieves this successful conveyance by utilizing
careful appeals such as logos, ethos, and pathos in a prolific manner and in such a way so as to
shock his audience, in this case, the land owning English elite, and as such, A Modest Proposal is
an effective essay as it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the Irish seem to be the main object of description throughout Swift s essay, his
audience seems to center on the rich, land owning English elite. One may deduce this from his use
of the name Pretender to refer to the exiled James Stuart, a Catholic king ousted and exiled after
the Glorious Revolution of 1688 1689. With Ireland s population being mostly Catholic, and Swift
introducing the solution of greatly [lessening] the number of Papists (635) through his proposal, he
seems to possess an English mindset in the form of a sort of condescending attitude towards the
Irish populace. In addition to this, Swift also distances himself from the issue of Irish
overpopulation as a whole in his use of the distal (distant), demonstrative pronoun that , as

Tang Empress Wu Zetian and Pharaoh Hatshepsut Tang Empress Wu Zetian , Tang Destiny China (625 705 AD) she was the only female emperor in Chinese history who actually ruled the whole country for almost half a century. Pharaoh Hatshepsut, Queen of Egypt, 15th century BC ruled for 20 years as king (priests of Amun in fact, declared her king). (Sayre, 2015, p. 83) while she reigned. Both Empress Wu and Pharaoh Hatshepsut were great women rulers of their time as well as the longest female rulers Both women ascended to power through the men in their families, Wu was born into a rich and noble family and so she was taught play music, write, read Chinese classics and by the time she was 13 years of age she was known for her wit, beauty and intelligence so by age 14 she was the concubine of Emperor Tai Sung and later the concubine of his son Kao Tsung who became Emperor after his father died. • 3. The Welfare Of Foreign Workers The welfare of foreign workers in Singapore is not taken care of seriously. Welfare refers to a person or a groups happiness, health and well being. In this essay, I will be looking it from three different perspectives of why the welfare is not taken care of seriously. Firstly, the treatment they received, next, the food they eat and lastly the living conditions that they stay in. In Singapore, there are around 1.32 million of foreign workers. Majority take up low skilled jobs, for example construction workers and domestic helpers. These jobs are called the 3D jobs, which means it is dirty, dangerous and difficult. They act as an invisible backbone to many well developing and fast growing economic countries as they build our houses and roads which are essential in a country. As they take up jobs that Singaporeans are not willing to do, we are obliged to treat them better. Or at least give them the basic rights and respect. However, people do not treat them the way they should. There are many incidents of people mistreating foreign workers in Singapore. This includes not giving them enough dignity and also abuse. In Unattended Foreign Maid, Migrant Workers Singapore (2009), it mentions that a poster was pasted outside a local food court, with the words THIS IS NOT THE WAITING AREA FOR FOREIGN MAID.UNATTENDED FOREIGN MAID WILL BE HANDED TO THE SECURITY on it. (as cited in Huang, S.,Yeoh, B. S.A., 2015, p.175). It clearly proves that locals do not treat them equally, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. African Americans During The Nineteenth Century Lynchings were a real threat to African Americans in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They created a lot of fear in the African American community especially in this time period. Between 1882 and 1969, 4,743 people lynchings occurred. In 1882, African Americans accounted for forty six percent of lynchings. Yet from 1900 to 1910, African Americans represented eighty nine percent of lynchings. Lynching was a tool used by white people in this time period to try to control black people, and Ida B. Wells helped bring international attention to this problem and fight to end it. Lynching occurred most frequently in the deep southern states. One reason for the lynchings was the resentment of southern whites when the slaves were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this, the federal government took control of the southern states not yet readmitted to the Union. In order for the states to get readmitted to the Union, they needed to agree to observe the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments. Amendment fourteen guaranteed all citizens the same rights without regard to color. Amendment fifteen made it illegal to discriminate against people based on racein voting rights. African Americans and northerners held a number of government positions during this time, and southern whites did not really accept these governments. Southern whites used legal and illegal means to fight the changes in the status of African Americans.(Royster 7,8) There were some means that were legal at the time which were used to keep blacks from taking advantage of their new freedom. Laws were put in place making requirements for voting other than race, but it was clear these requirements were intended to stop blacks from voting. This was the time period during which lynchings increased. Groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, the Knights of the White Camelia, the Red Shirts, and the White Line participated in lynchings and other forms of violence and intimidation. People outside these groups also lynched African Americans for a variety of reasons such as intimidating blacks into not using their rights or punishing them for real or alleged crimes. • 5. War I Was No Standard Blueprint For A War Poet A war poet is a poet in time of and on the subject of war. A substantial number of important poets were soldiers, writing about their experiences of war. A number of them died on the battlefield, others like Siegfried Sassoon and Randall Jarrell survived but were scarred by their experiences, and some were just witnesses to the war like Thomas Hardy, and all of this was reflected in their poetry. Many poems were British and were published in newspapers and then collected into anthologies. Several of these early anthologies were published during the war and were very popular, though the tone of the poetry changed as the war progressed. (Santanu) There was no standard blueprint for a war poet; the War Poets were from a variety of backgrounds. The whole variety of backgrounds gives a clear idea that the impact of war in the trenches hit everyone who served there. Forbidden from writing home with any degree of accuracy or truth about the life they led, some put their thoughts into a diary that could be kept in secret. Others put their thoughts into poems. Most of these writers came from middle class backgrounds; many had been to public schools and served as officers at the front. (Truman) Poets that actually went to the trenches and saw action, the reality appalled them, they were all either wounded or shell shocked, or both. They wrote powerfully and poignantly about the effects of war on the bodies and minds of men, the horror and the waste. These poems have largely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Characterism And Symbolism In Henry James s Washington Square Henry James novel, Washington Square, tells the story of Catherine Sloper, a shy and extremely modest woman who falls in love with a handsome and charming man, Morris Townsend, after meeting him at the occasional party given by the aunt Mrs. Almond. Catherine, who is viewed by everyone as a woman with a plain look and little personality, but a great dowry, becomes an easy target for Morris, a man with the shadowy background. Unfortunately, for Catherine, her father, Dr. Sloper also considers her neither clever nor beautiful and believes that Morris is only interested in his daughter for her money. It is also evident throughout the novelthat Morris desires Catherine s money and is not interested in her as a woman. When Catherine s father does not change his mind towards the couple s marriageand Morris is convinced by Mrs. Penniman that he will never get a penny from Dr. Sloper, he disappears within days after telling Catherine he wants to travel to New Orleans for a business. After Morris abandons Catherine, she becomes more confident in herself, discovers her inner strength, and gains control over her life. In the beginning, James describes Catherine as not clever, stalwart, and extremely modest woman with no trace of her mother s beauty. She was not ugly; she had simply plain, dull, gentle countenance (James 8). James portrays Catherine as a woman who is willing to sacrifice her own personal happiness to please others. She is of no interest to other characters in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Similarities Between Spanish And Basque In Catalunya If you encounter a native of France or Spain, he will most likely speak French or Spanish, as the national language of his home country. However, a notable number of people speak a cultural language as well. The salience of these languages on the north vs. south side of the Pyrenees Mountains is substantial. Catalan, spoken in northeastern Spainand southeastern France, and Basque, a language isolate spoken in northern Spain and southwestern France, are minority languages. Both are distinct from Castilian Spanish with their own literature, people, and culture. While Basque and Catalan are prevalent in their respective Spanish autonomous communities, the border of the PaГЇsos Catalans (Catalan Countries) and Euskal Herria (Basque... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Catalunya, Catalan is spoken fluently by 85% of the population with 97% claiming they understand ( Generalitat de Catalunya. 6). This mutual intelligibility between Spanish and Catalan suggests that Catalan is only a dialect of Castilian. While many people would like to say this is true, and Spain under Franco attempted to integrate Catalan into mainstream Spanish culture this way (Alguera 89), the Catalan is a distinct language with it s own lexicon, literature, grammar rules, etc. It is a mandatory subject for children in public education in the autonomous community ( Catalans. 109). This contrasts the Basque Country where only 30% of the population is fully fluent in Basque (Gobierno Vasco 17). Interestingly, although Basque is classified as a vulnerable language ( Data on the Basque Language. ) and is spoken by less than a third of the population, the highest concentration of speakers exists in young adults, where nearly 60% of people age 16 to 24 claim to be fluent (Gobierno Vasco 21). I think this trend is interesting because one would think the older generations had the higher percentage of Basque speakers, and the lowest among the younger age groups owing to assimilation to Spanish language and culture. Although Basque and Catalan are recognized co official languages and enjoy considerable clout and use, the situation is very different in France. As the symbol for the national identity of the Basques, scholars have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. How Did Langston Hughes Contribute To The Harlem Renaissance The Harlem Renaissance stands as one of the greatest cultural, social and artistic movements in U.S. history. This time period consisted of a migration of black Americans from rural Southern states such as Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana to urban Harlem, New York. Originally called, the New Negro Movement meaning, many believed this brought a new black cultural identity to an almost all white culture. At this time, Langston Hughes, famous Harlem Renaissanceauthor, wrote many controversial pieces about slavery, he mentions that they send him to eat in the kitchen (Hughes 1) which describes how many slaves suffered in these days. For America, this movement helped redefine how America saw the African Americancommunity, and it helped set the stage for the Civil Rights Movement of 1950 1960. For Langston Hughes, his works reflected his love for jazz music but also told the story of what he saw and heard back in the 1920 s to the 1930 s, what most call, the Harlem Renaissance.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With whites standing as the more dominant race back then, many of them became curious of what actually occurred in the daily life of a black man in Harlem. This curiosity lit the match for the Harlem Renaissance to occur. Many African American poets, singers, and painters, like Langston Hughes, came into the light at this time and joined in on the cultural tradition of African American humor, music, and song; their work thus accords a privileged place for the many and varied sounds of laughter in black America at this time (Chasar 58). The culture these African Americans brought to an almost white country in every way other than color, deems worthy of more praise than it received. The Harlem Renaissance brought a cultural explosion to a predominantly white nation. The effects of this cultural blend became far reaching even though it gained far less recognition than ... What Was The Role Of Women In The 18th Century The Women present during the time period 1650 1800 were definitely the unsung heroes who not only revolutionized France, but also made several contributions to Western and several other societies. Women made several contributions mainly in literature, politics, visual arts, and society. Women during 18th century made a remarkable contribution to literature, which involved the philosophes assisting Diderot in the creation of the Encyclopedie in France, which has 72,000 entries that involve a wide variety of information on specific subjects such as political theory (Fiero, 144). Additionally, Chatelet produced an annotated French translation of Newton s Principia which was regarded as a monumental achievement (Fiero, 144). The Reconstruction time period was another important part of the Civil War. The reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War. The Civil War was the war against the north and the south over slavery and many other different ways of life. The Civil War pretty much smoothed out the significant differences between the north and south but, that did not mean that the north and south got along well. The reconstruction started in 1865 and ended in 1877. The Reconstruction time period left a gigantic impact on northern and southern americans. During the reconstruction time period the south did not get along very well with the north. The southerners needed help rebuilding their land. In the Ducksters article it mentioned, Much of the southern United States were destroyed during the Civil War. Because of this, the north felt that they should help them rebuild their land. • 17. Eugenics, A New Science Of Heredity Eugenics, a new science of heredity was first introduced in 1883, brought about to address the budding fears and threats to the purity and fitness of the British race. A fear brought upon by events such as the Boer War in 1899, forced Britain to question the spectrum of degeneracy within the population and resolve the issue of bringing the British and White raceback to strength, unified and fit. Sir Francis Galtondefined eugenicsas the study of agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations either physically or mentally . It was believed that differences in mental, moral and physical traits between individuals, as well as races were hereditary, producing those who were deemed... The United States came across a lot more racialist than Britain; the key racial targets being the American Negro and various portions of white races emigrating from Eastern Europe. In a much more patriotic and chauvinistic country this threatened to overwhelm the superior white race, forcing the development of new immigration and sterilisation laws. Britain was just as supportive in believing in the dominant White race, however was never as extreme in it racialism. British Society was ethnically more or less homogenous and therefore it had not experienced the considerable amount of non white emigrating people than it did in later decades. . The movement in Britain was marked by variations on existing racial themes, instead of new compositions. Racism figured a lot less distinctly and was of less importance to British Eugenics, identifying the new science as primarily class based, focusing more on the biological fitness of the different classes. Consequently, one could argue that race wasn t awfully important to the movement, but race figured much more markedly to the eugenics movement in other countries such as the United ... • 18. Steps that Lead to the Revolutionary War Independence from Britain did not come easily. It took many years and battles to break off the colonies from Britain. Many desires drove the colonies to a violent war, and it all started with the following: In 1763, a peace treaty had just been signed. This was called the Peace of Paris which ended a long series of costly conflicts between Britain and France during the French and Indian wars. Because France had lost, they were forced to give all the American territory to Great Britain. After Great Britain took control of the region, King George III did not want to fight another war in America so he forbid colonial settlement on the western lands. This was called the Proclamation line of 1763. This proclamation angered many colonies since they believed that a king who ruled across the ocean could not determine the colonist needs and had no right to limit where they could settle. This was the beginning of many troubles in the colonies. It was not until 1764 when Britain started to interfere with the colonies. The colonies had some independence so they were not used to being told what to do. Because the British government had gone in debt fighting France, they decided that the colonies had to help pay for their own defense. To raise this money, parliament made a new law, sugar act. It required payment of a tariff on imported items such as molasses, sugar, coffee and certain wines. During this time, tariffs were used to regulate trade; however, the colonist felt this was just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Joseph Conrad Sexism Racism is incredibly evident to readers in Joseph Conrad s famous novel, Heart of Darkness. Readers are able to easily identify the repulsive treatment of African Americans through protagonist character Marlow s eyes. Many are repelled by the incredibly grotesque description of the native Africans as savages . However, the underlying theme of sexism is often overlooked in Conrad s writing. He uses his characters to express his own opinions on a womans place in society or lack thereof. Though this book was written over 100 years ago, it is incredibly ironic how relevant this trend is to day. Contrary to many beliefs, feminists don t want to walk around shirtless. We don t hate men. We don t want to be treated like men. We have nothing against women who wear dresses and are stay at home moms. We also have nothing against women who put their careers first and don t want to start a family. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people, and can be whatever they want to be. Theodore Roosevelt once said stating a problem without a solution is just whining! , and that s not what I want to do here. So I am going to suggest a simple solution that if taken to heart, could affect all of mankind. Ready? Let women be whatever the hell they want to be...and respect them for it! Because a woman who stays at home and raises a family is not a lazy gold digger. Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and not one to be undermined. But on the other hand, a woman who chooses not to have children and to focus on her career is not self centered. She is just as smart and driven as any man doing the exact same thing. It s essential that as a society we move past the sexist mindset that we see in Heart of Darkness. We re not stuck in the Victorian Era. Women and men must understand how we can all benefit when given equality. It sets us all free and allows us to progress. Imagine this country s potential if we could get rid of all ... Coastal Geographic Environment Analysis How Natural Processes Operate at Coastal Geographic Environment Natural Processes are actions or events that have natural causes, which result in natural events. The three main coastal environment processes that operate at Muriwai are Coastal Erosion, Coastal Transportation and Coastal Deposition. The elements that interact to produce natural processes are wind, waves and tides. Each phenomenon at Muriwai s coastal geographic environment has been produced by interaction. Coastal Erosion is a process at Muriwai that gradually wears away the rock particles of the earth s surface, transporting them to another location. There are many types of processes that cause erosion at Muriwai such as wave erosion, wind erosion and wave refraction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These types of erosion have caused the formation of several phenomena at Muriwai. Motutara Island (stack) was produced by the formation of two caves on either side of the headland forming an arch and the roof slowly eroding away due to vertical erosion. Fisherman s Rock was produced by cliff retreat when undercutting stones are thrust at the cliff by wave action. The blowhole was formed by vertical, hydraulic and mechanical erosion causing the cracks and fissures to enlarge over time to produce this hole. Types of wave erosion operating on the headland have produced the cave. Wave Refraction is an important process as it influences wave erosion on Otakamiro headland and on the beach at Muriwai (refer to Diagram 1). Wave Transportation (Longshore Drift) varies spatially due to wave refraction. It is the process by which waves alter their course as they interact in shallow water with the seabed along the coastline. This process produces wave erosion, which focuses its energy on Otakamiro Point. Diagram 1 Constructive, Destructive and Dissipative are the types of waves that operate at Muriwai that cause erosion. Sculpted during the Early Imperial period, with several restorations made in the 17th century, this Roman masterpiece dominates the room with its godlike essence. Chiseled with great detail, Hercules is holding a skinned lion in his left hand while his right hand is gripping a club behind his back. The statue stands with confidence and empowerment, capturing the moment right after Hercules skinned the Nemean beast, transporting the viewer directly to the scene, while at the same time also demonstrating Hercules emotional state. Upon examining the amalgam of Hercules qualities such as his physical characteristics, pose, and expression, the sculptureleaves the viewer with the impression that Hercules is the epitome of the ideal man. Originally inspired by Greek Myth, Hercules was sent on an impossible task to kill a Nemean Lion. After figuring out his bat was useless, he then proceeded to strangle the lion to death with his bare hands, and then skinning the dead beast. In the sculpture, Hercules weight is shifted towards the tree trunk which Romans used to support their sculptures, and the club swings behind his right arm. By having the club swing behind him, it emphasizes Hercules masculinity by highlighting the fact that Hercules, with his bare hands, was able to defy the seemingly impossible and kill the beast all on his own without help from weaponry. Alan Turing identified which problems could and could not be solved by computers, and in doing so founded theoretical computer science. When the computer is finished calculating the problem, the result must be displayed to the user as output through output devices like light bulbs, LEDs, monitors, beamers and printers. Novice users, especially children, often have difficulty understanding the important idea that the computer is only a machine, and cannot think or understand the words it displays. Daily Life In Native Americans For Native Americans, life prior to contact with the Europeans would in many ways starkly contrast what would become of their societies after European influence. While one of the most apparent features of Native American societies included their great diversity, daily life for the Native Americans had some common key elements. For one, subsistence practices to feed their tribes must have made up most of their days, because in Native American societies it is stated in the book that, there were no beggars among them . According to Khan Academy, in 5000 BC, the domestication of corn (maize) would spur the development of agriculture, which would become a key feature needed for settled civilizations. This would change daily lives of Natives from a reliance on hunting and gathering to a reliance more on agricultural practices. Depending on the location of the society, daily life contrasted. Natives adapted to their environment and their methods of subsistence adapted to it as well (fishing, hunting, gathering, agricultural practices). For example, in more arid areas, Natives survived by hunting bison and following herds of animals. Pueblo people in the Southwest adapted by creating irrigation systems to provide water for their agriculture. Overall, it was the men that spent their daily lives hunting and fishing. AgResearch has investigated ways to manipulate the genetic material in dairy cattle by using the process of GeneKnockdown , with the aim to create a cow which produces milk which doesn t contain the proteinresponsible for the allergic reactions, the Beta lacto globulin protein or BLG . Scientists have been successful in creating Daisy the Cow, who is a cloned calf genetically modified to produce milk which does not contain the BLG protein. I will be discussing the biological processes behind the cloning of Daisy the cow, and the decisions made by scientists to use methods for genetically modifying the cow s genes from whom Daisy was cloned, for the benefit of humans. There are specific reasons AgResearch used processes like Gene Knockdown and cloning by Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer SCT to get the result they wanted. The stakes are high to ensure the cloned cow Daisy survives and is healthy. Therefore AgResearch needed to choose procedures which were most likely to yield successful results. The whole project and process cost around 50 million dollars to produce one cow, and with historical success rates very low they could potentially lose funding and be shut down if the project didn t produce any successful ... • 38. Twelfth Night Gender Analysis Janelle Owusu Dr. Wood LMC 3228 30 November 2017 Shakespeare Term Essay Gender is one of the most prevalent themes in William Shakespeare s comedy, Twelfth Night. In Twelfth Night, the play is based on Viola, a twin who gets separated away from her brother in a shipwreck. To find work, Viola undertakes the disguise of Cesario, a young male who wants to work in the household of Duke Orsino. Orsino has been personally dealing with the love he feels for Lady Olivia, who refuses to entertain any man since she is dealing with the loss of her brother and father. In Orsino s efforts to have Cesario facilitate love between himself and Olivia, Olivia ends up falling in love with Cesario. Viola has also found herself falling in love with Orsino, thus creating a love triangle between these three. In this love triangle, Shakespeare exhibits a challenge and a reinforcement of the gender roles that were present in the setting he personally wrote the play from. Through Olivia s attraction to Cesario, he challenges these gender roles and through Orsino s attraction to Cesario, he reinforces these gender roles. 1 Twelfth Night is reported to have been written in 1601/1602 to be a festival amusement for the end of the holiday season which would have been during Shakespeare s successful career in London as a writer and an actor [shakespeare theatre peter thomson]. In early, Seventeenth century England, both gender hierarchy, and a husband s patriarchal role as the premier of his household, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Kony 2012 Film Analysis When a social issue arises, many activists turn to different media outlets to voice their views and demand social change. For decades, actualities known today as documentaries, have been used to give viewers an inside look on real life without being there to experience it firsthand. Often, directors use these films to persuade the audience into taking their side regarding various societal issues. Filmmakers help sway their targeted audience by using different codes and conventions to appeal their opinion effortlessly to the viewers. It can be seen in the films Kony 2012 by director James Russel, 2002 s Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore and 1922 s Nanook of the North by Robert J. Flaherty, that directors often use subjectivity rather than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moore manipulates many facts throughout the documentary. For example, he edits Charlton Heston s speech regarding his support of the second amendment, in order to make it seem as if it was shortly after the Columbine High School shooting when in reality, it was further down the road (Bradsaw, 2002). Furthermore, the director strategically set up an interview with Heston while he was suffering from Parkinson s disease so he could ultimately take advantage of him for the sake of the film (Bradsaw, 2002). While he explores many different methods, Moore often takes on social issues in a comedic fashion to help persuade the viewers. For instance, in one clip he uses a cartoon as a representation of the civil rights movement in the United States, amplifying the ignorance of the counter view. Moore also uses Noddies and Reverse Questions in his interviews to belittle the interviewee and create a more obvious argument for the audience to side with. Lastly, Michael Moore uses video montages combined with irony to create a negative image surrounding America s gun control laws. In this clip, Moore shows violence and terror that the United States has been involved in, all the while playing Louis Armstrong s What a Wonderful World , to create a thought within the viewer that with stricter gun control laws, none of this would have ... Psychotherapist at NYU (according to the university s website), Brooke Donatone argues in her article, Why Millennials Can t Grow Up that millennials experience extended adolescence that delays adulthood (Donatone 1). The author believes that the reasons for that happening are parents by their helicopter parenting and the economy because there are less high paying jobs that allow millennials to be financially independent. Throughout the article, Donatone explains that there is evidence on how it is not millennials fault that they are experiencing delayed adulthood. It is especially inappropriate and unfair to generalize about this topic because she talks about such a big and diverse group that is millennial generation, and not everyone comes from the same background. • 47. Model Simulation And Fire Model For Biological Neurons Introduction The human nervous system is composed of billions of neurons that respond to stimuli, conduct impulses, and communicate with other cells. Dendrites, a branched extension of a nerve cell, receives information from other neurons. The soma, or cell body, is responsible for whether or not the neuronsends out signals consisting of a short electrical pulse called an action potential, or spike. This spike is carried out by axons, delivering it to other neurons, and has a duration of a few milliseconds and an amplitude of 100 mV. A biological neuron model is a mathematical description of the properties of nerve cells that is designed to accurately describe and predict biological processes. One way to do so is by using the integrate and fire model which displays a trajectory of fluctuating potential versus time in the sub threshold regime and outputs spikes that are triggered when the membrane potential reaches its threshold. Once this threshold is reached, the membrane potential is then reset, allowing the process to start again. Model Simulation and Graphs In creating the leaky integrate and fire model, using the information given, such as the parameters and threshold we created an if statement within a for loop (see Appendix A for complete code). To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee In today s society, it is possible for a woman to achieve nearly anything; however, for a woman of yesterday s society, bringing world wide recognition to the many faces of prejudice is an accomplishment of its own. Author Harper Lee has had the honor to accomplish just that through her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a moving and inspirational story about a young girl learning the difference between the good and the bad of the world. In the small town of Monroeville, Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Growing up, Harper Lee had three siblings: two sisters and an older brother. She and her siblings grew up modestly. Even though money was not as much of a problem for her family as it was for others of their time, her father never did spoil her and her siblings. Lee and her brother attended a public grammar school in Monroe County, and Harper Lee continued to further her education after her high school graduation. She attended Huntingdon College for a year and then transferred to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she studied law from 1945 to 1949. While she was at the University of Alabama, she was also an exchange student at Oxford University in England for a year. Harper Lee always had a passion for writing.
