The Adaptive Voice
The Adaptive Voice Our actions are what define us as humans. Words are part of our actions.
Therefore, our voice defines who we are, so when we change our voice we change the fabric of who
we are. Zadie Smith, the author of Speaking in Tongues , knows this first hand when she moved from
a working class district of London to Cambridge. She felt that she was able to have both, the
Cambridge voice and the Willesden voice, and use them to expand her base of knowledge; like
learning a new language. However, as she became more engrossed in her studies the core of her
personality that kept her at her roots disappeared and she was consumed by the Cambridge life style.
She lost herself in Cambridge because she was imitating the Cambridge life style and according to
Susan Blackmore s essay Strange Creatures humans imitate naturally to learn. As humans imitate they
change and because they change, their voices change as well; building an idea within us that our
voices need to be unified, or singular. When we change voices we change mindsets making it
incredibly difficult to switch between two mindsets on a whim. Our voices must be singular in order
for us to correctly display our identity to the world. When you pick up a new meme it is like learning a
new language, it requires flexibility. Zadie Smith says flexibility is something that requires work if it
is to be maintained (Smith 248). This is something that can be said about all forms of learning.
Whether it is learning a

High School Life Analysis
Four years ago, we, the students of the class of twenty seventeen, began our journey a journey filled
with ups and downs; a journey filled with positive and negative emotions; a journey filled with
success and failure. It seems like it was just yesterday that we began this difficult yet rewarding
journey through high school. I remember the days when we were all freshmen, and we could not wait
for this moment to come. We were impatient continuously counting down the days, weeks, semesters,
and years until we would graduate.
Now, this day has finally come, but are we satisfied with the success that we have created for
ourselves? Personally, I believe that the things that we have accomplished in the past four years are
phenomenal. No challenge was left alone without giving it a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

You made sure that we were on track to complete our work on time. You pushed us to our limits
because you saw that we could do better. You cared and loved for us no matter how. Thank you for
always being there because, without you, life is impossible.
And last but not least, to our friends that we have made. Thanks for being supportive at both the best
of times and the worst of times. You actually made school somewhat tolerable, and you helped keep
my sanity. Without you, life would be boring, so I thank you for making it enjoyable.
As you can see, many people have played major roles in our journey to success. These great people
have helped by opening up many opportunities, and by taking these opportunities, we can make the
world a better place for future generations. If we can accomplish this, which I believe we can, we will
show the greatest gratitude of all time.
By graduating from Warren High today, we are one step closer to making our wildest dreams come
true. No matter which path we travel, we will always remember our journey began here. We will grow
old knowing that Warren High is where everything

What Is Demand Model Of Supply And Demand
Supply and demand is a model for understanding the determination of the price of quantity of a good
sold on the market. The explanation works by looking at two different groups buyers and sellers and
asking how they interrelate. The supply and demand model relies on a high level of competition,
meaning that bidding can only take place if there is a high amount of buyers and sellers in the market.
Buyers bid against each other and thus raise the price, while sellers bid against each other and thus
lower the price. The equilibrium is a point at which all the bidding has been done; nobody has a
reason to offer higher prices or accept lower prices. In this essay I will be critically analysing the
supply/demand model in understanding actual world supply, demand and market behaviour. I will
highlight this through the aid of diagrams and examples. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This model will work most accurately when there is perfect competition. Perfect competition arises
when consumers and producers of a product are price takers. This means they have no power to
influence the market price. However, this is not a realistic proposal because no market is going to be
perfectly competitive. Although the supply demand framework still gives a good estimate for what is
happening in the market most of the time.
To an economists demand refers to both the willingness and ability to pay for a good. When the price
of a good falls, the quantity demanded will fall. This applies to both individuals and whole market
demand. This is known as the law of demand. The relationship between Quantity Demanded (Qd) and
price can be shown in a table (curve). Price is located on the vertical axis and demand is located on the
horizontal. The demand curve will have a negative

Nature In John Dunbar s Dances With Wolves
In order to see nature for what it is one must be often to new ideas. Each of the characters, Lt. John
Dunbar from Dances with Wolves, Dr. Ethan Powell from Instinct, and Captain John Smith from
Pocahontas find a natural draw to nature that put them in an environment to learn. A same motif that I
have found throughout the three movies is each character who freely offers to take in a venture. For
example, Lt. Dunbar in Dances with Wolves was an army soldier who requested to be at the outer
edge of civilization which in this case is the frontier with a deep draw to something he knew would be
destroyed by human creations. Dr. Ethan Powell in Instinct, after a while he approaches and study
about the gorillas, he finds himself drawn to the wildlife of the ... Show more content on

John Smith in Pocahontas is captain of a ship on an exploration to a new world who had a draw to
nature which drove him to explore the new land around him as the others were busy undoing nature.
These characters had a draw and the ability to see nature has an intimate relationship to human life
when many others around them are blind to nature.
Each one of the characters had to overcoming fears found in nature to be able to see nature for what it
is. In the movie Dances with Wolves, despite the thread of nearby Native American tribes Lt. Dunbar
still decides to stay at the frontier and manned the post himself. His first experiences with Native
American are pretty unpleasant. They attempt to steal his horse and later one act in a very aggressive
manner towards the Lieutenant. But over time, he overcomes his fear and tries to establish a good
relationship with them. Native Americans begin to accept and trust him after he feeds them (almost
literally) by helping them to find the buffalo. The Sioux warriors and White soldier are also natural
enemies and it is unusual to develop this relationship. The most obvious symbols in Dances with

Costco Corporation Was Founded By A Pair Of Entrepreneurs,...
Costco Corporation was founded by a pair of entrepreneurs, James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman.
Costco is a large wholesales retailer where low price is only a fraction of why they are so successful.
Their profit margins, ethical standards, and happy employees all contribute to why Costco is a
successful business with over 488 locations serving around 48 million cardholders in eight countries.
Costco has an annual sale of over $50 billion due to the strategies they implemented to keep their
workforce of 125,000 motivated. It is known across the world that Costco treat their employees well
and in return the employees are highly motivated to work for Costco and make it a success. Costco is
the top warehouse club and the fourth largest retailer in the United Sates. Costco started from a single
store in Seattle in 1983 to become one of the largest multinational warehouses chain. The story of
Costco begins with the exemplary leadership from the co founders, James Sinegal and Jeffrey
Brotman. The cofounders launched Costco with the idea of having a high volume of inventory which
they could sell for low cost. In order to provide their items at low cost and also pay their employees
well to keep them motivated, Sinegal and Brotman concocted a brilliant idea. The idea was to use the
warehouse as itself, meaning that concrete floors, fluorescent lights, and pallets of merchandise are all
essential to keep price low and customer happy. Although it does not look visually appealing, the

Essay on Technology in the film Tron
Technology in the film Tron
Introduction
The purpose of my project is to discover how technology is represented within the film Tron. To
answer this research question, I viewed and analyzed the movie and incorporated information from the
text and various websites. While studying this film, I took into consideration factors such as images
and language used, how technology is related to society, and what symbols the creator used to convey
certain qualities of technology. In this research paper, I will begin by explaining the significance of
this project and my areas of research. I will then relay the focus of my investigation, the methods I
employed to gain my research, analyze the film, and discuss the implications of my analysis. ... Show

This description led me to believe that the outlook of technology at the time, when the Internet was
just being introduced to the public, was fear. People feared the unknown power of the new technology
of computers. Tron is a story of man battling his own creations, which represents technology as a
powerful force with destructive capabilities.
I am interested in this project because I have always liked science fiction/fantasy movies. I like to
think about the possibilities that technology holds for our future. I am also interested in how
technology influences our culture. I was in high school when this movie came out and had limited
access to computers at that time. I wasn t concerned with the impact of new computer technology
then, but remember hearing people say that machines would someday run the world. For example, I
worked for a grocery store in the 1980s and remember other employees worrying that new machines
were being developed that would replace the cashiers, and we would all be out of a job. I think this
movie would probably have a bigger impact now that computers are such a large part of our everyday
lives. Artificial intelligence is still a popular theme for science fiction movies, so people must like to
consider it a possibility. I ve read that there is a possible sequel to the movie

By filling the database with test data, we can begin to determine if the tables are normalized correctly,
need changes to the keys and foreign keys, or new bridge tables are needed to correctly output the
data. It is also at this point that we test to ensure that data types match and all entities are of the proper
format. Although Change Request No. 3 seems fairly simple, it will bring to light any issues that
might have been encountered while interpreting the tables from the ERD Diagram. It is not
uncommon for changes to be needed to the database after it has been created from the ERD.
Moreover, now is the best time to catch these issues before the system is fully functioning making it
much more difficult to make certain changes. Creating ERDs According to Kroenke and Auer (2010)
there is an ERD standard, albeit very loosely practiced. The diagrams use combinations of rectangles
and diamonds. Entity classes are shown using rectangles, relationships are shown using diamonds, the
maximum cardinality of the relationship is shown inside the diamond, and the minimum cardinality is

Essay On Texas State Government
Today we will be discussing the structure and a few roles of the Texas state government, the purpose
and function of each type of local government, describing how some states have consolidated the
county and city functions into a single entity, and my opinion on whether or not Texas would be better
maintaining its several distinct types or consolidating them into a single larger entity.
The commissioner s court has several roles such as taxes, discretion in administering state programs,

This system works because the mayor realizes the need for managerial assistance. The city manager
reports only to the mayor while focusing on policy implementation and budgeting. This allows the
mayor to focus on addressing and working for a solution for major problems within the city. The
Commission form allows for the elected commissioners to form a board of administrative individuals
that oversee specific departments. They tend to favor their department the most instead of public
interest. They also fall into the easily corrupt and don t have specific areas of responsibility. General
Law Cities are usually under a population of 5,000 or cities that have not adopted the home rule style
of government. With the state limiting the size of council, they also specify duties of the mayor,

Innate Response Essay
The immune system is composed of two parts firstly the innate system and secondly the adaptive
system. The innate response is the first line of defence and relies on pattern recognition receptors
(PRRs) to recognise specific pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and provide a rapid
response to the recognised pathogen. This system also has the complement system and phagocytic
cells as its disposal. Pathogens expresses PAMPs which activate antigen presenting cells (APC), such
as dendritic cells (DC), through ligation of PRR (e.g. Toll like receptors) found on the APC surface.
The adaptive immune system, is the specific response against the pathogens. This response begins
with the activation of T cells, CD4+ T helper (TH) cells, CD8+ ... Show more content on

DC are crucial in pathogen recognition and initiating specific immune responses to destroy pathogens.
DC phagocytose a diverse selection of antigens and present them to cells as peptides bound to MHC
I/II products.
DCs can be immature or mature, immature DCs are found in tissues throughout the body allowing
them to monitor the surrounding environment for pathogens and can provide a rapid response to any
foreign bodies. DCs become mature when they receive a danger signal through PRRs, during the
maturation process the cells T cell stimulating capacity will increase, it will also increase in size
allowing an increase in levels of cell surface antigens (e.g. MHC class I/II and CD40) which is
important in T cell activation.
DCs will uptake the antigen causing inflammatory cytokines production (e.g. IL 2, INFĀµ, TNFĪ±) and
chemokines allowing the antigen loaded DC to migrate to lymphoid organs. Once there the naĆÆve T

Cloud Computing Research Paper
Cloud Computing Research Paper Introduction Cloud computing is revolutionizing the use software
globally at a very rapid pace as it is completely redefining the economics of how software is
purchased and used. Web 2.0 technologies and their underlying design precepts are responsible for the
current and future generations of social networks (Bernoff, Li, 2008). Both have immediate and
significant impacts on the operations of businesses and the major contributions each makes are
explained in this analysis. Analysis of the Business Uses of the Cloud and Web 2.0 Technologies
Cloud computing has drastically reordered the economics of how every size and type of business uses
software. For the large enterprise there is no longer the need to go through an extensive capital
expense (CAPEX) budgeting process, often involving the board of directors of a business (Aljabre,
2012). Cloud computing software is often pad for through operating expense (OPEX) budgets, which
shifts the control of its budgeting to the line of business managers or those managers and executives
responsible for a given business unit. This dynamic alone has completely reordered the enterprise
software market, as cloud based applications can often be modified significantly faster than on
premise applications (Lin, Chen, 2012). As a result of this flexibility, enterprises, medium size and
small businesses are all relying on cloud based applications to automate those process areas that had
been expensive and

Characteristics Of The Romantic Period
The term used to describe European art, literature and music from 1780 to 1840 is the word romantic .
One of the reasons that scholars chose to call this the Romantic Period was because of the
exaggeration in expression of human emotion during it. This is commonly seen as the main
characteristic of the period, but there are many others that cannot be ignored. Within Romantic
literature, there was a preoccupation with economic and political issues due to the industrial
revolution, a development of female writers and gothic fiction, and themes of nature, for Poland
specifically, and future fate of the country. A common misconception about the Romantic Period is
that it was flawless and perfect. But, in reality there was economic recession, widespread
unemployment, and indirect taxation (30 Great Myths about the Romantics xiv) due to urbanization
and the Industrial Revolution. This led Adam Smith, David Ricardo, David Malthus, Jeremy Bentham
and John Stuart Mill to publish their works which would help reshape and guide economics and
politics during their time, and in the future. Accompanying the publication of their works, there were
people who critiqued their published theories. Those who critiqued them most commonly believed
that the authors ideologies were too commercial. Some authors who portrayed their disapproval of the
political economy were Coleridge, Southey, Wodsworth, Shelley and Blake (King 47). For example, in
Song to the Men of England by Shelley, there

Kant s Ethical Theory Of Ethics
According to MacKinnon Fiala (2015), Kant s ethical theory is a deontological theory. A deontology
theory is based on duties, obligations, and rights (p. 111). The focus of this essay is how Kant uses the
Categorical Imperative to explain the nature of ethics.
Immanuel Kant s basic moral principle the Categorical Imperative states, I should never act except in
such a way that I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law (Giambusso, 2016, para.
2). His theory does not focus on the consequences of actions as the consequences have no part in
deontological ethics, but the imperative that a person must do what is morally right without exception.
One can use the Categorical Imperative as a formula to test if an action is morally right or wrong, and
if done correctly the result will be the same for everyone. So, no one has to tell you what is right or
wrong because when you use the formula correctly you can see for yourself what the correct ethical
action is no matter the situation. Kant s example to explain the idea is lying to get out of a problematic
situation. If one can substitute a certain situation for a rule of action (the maxim), and then can make
this rule of action the universal rule, the rule for everyone to follow and the rule does not lead to a
contradiction, then and only then is the action morally right. For example: The situation: If I lie, I can
get out of this problematic situation. The maxim (the rule of action): It is okay to lie to get

Examples Of Courtly Love In The Knight s Tale
Most honorable men of Ancient England practiced chivalry, and committed themselves to a courtly
love with the woman they wanted. Courtly love emphasizes nobility and chivalry in order to wed the
woman of your dreams. Some may even say Ancient England is where chivalry was invented. Courtly
love is romanticized in the Canterbury Tale s: The Franklin s Tale, The Squire s Tale, and The Knights
Tale. These three short stories encompass Ancient England s idea of courtly love through the practices
of chivalry between knights and noblemen. The Franklin s Tale discusses the love triangle of a
courageous knight named Arveragus, a beautiful young lady named Dorigen, and the most handsome
nobleman named Aurelius. Arveragus and Dorigen wed, but Arveragus must leave for two years for

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Hydrocolubic Solubility
HYDROTROPIC SOLUBILIZATION [23][24] [25][26] Use of Additives may increase or decrease
the solubility of a solute in a given solvent. The effect of an additive depends very much on the
influence: it has on the structure of water or its ability to compete with solvent of water molecules. A
convenient quantitation result of the solute additive on the solubility of another solute may be obtained
by Setschenowequation.

The Expanding Field of Stem Cell Research
Stem cell research is one of the most widely expanding areas of scientific research being conducted all
over the world today. In basic terms, stem cell research is the research of stem cells; however in
actuality is much more complicated. A stem cell is a cell with the ability to develop into any of the cell
types that make up the tissues and organs of the body. This makes these cells highly useful and
provides limitless potential in the field of regenerative medicine.
There are two expansive lines of stem cell research, which involve multipotent stem cells and
pluripotent stem cells. Multipotent stem cells are stem cells which can only specialise into cells of the
same type of tissue, for example muscle stem cells can only become specialised muscle cells. This
type of stem cell are known as adult stem cells and are found in the brain, blood, muscles, skin, bone
marrow and other fully developed parts of the body. On the other hand, pluripotent stem cells can
differentiate and specialise into any cell of the body. These are embryonic stem cells which are found

The Confederation Act of 1867 Essay
The Confederation act of 1867 without question has had a major influence on the status of
contemporary Canada. It has helped shape Canada into one of the worlds most politically and
economically powerful countries; a country that is strong, independent, and united. There was a series
of events which led to the confederation of Canada, some which are more significant than others.
However, I believe that despite the significance of events such as the British encouragement of uniting
its North American colonies, the central and key reason for confederation was the fear of potential
American (Yankee) inhabitance (whether by persuasion or invasion) of the divided and vast British
North American colonies, and the way that the Fathers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John A. Macdonald, the prime minister of Canada at the time, had seen first hand the effect of divided
colonies and the devastating impact that it could have on a nation. However, there was a serious and
impending threat against the colonies of Canada from the northern United States, not only because of
the British support of the southern states during the war, but also because of three specific events: The
St. Albans Raid, the Trent Crisis, and the Alabama Affair. The St. Albans raid involved a group of
confederate agents who robbed over two hundred thousand dollars (a significant amount of money in
the 1800 s) from three banks in St. Albans, Vermont. These raiders fled to Canada, and although they
were caught and the money was returned, they were not persecuted because they could not be trialed
in Canada when the crime had been committed in the United States. President Lincoln prevented the
northerners from pursuing the raiders into Canada to murder them, as this could have potentially
resulted in a war, which would in turn benefit the southern states. The Trent affair once again raised
tensions, when two Confederate diplomats were arrested in Boston while transferring a mail packet
Trent to England. This greatly angered London, as they sent many troops as reinforcements to protect
their colonies, eventually the diplomats were released and tensions eased once

What are some strategies you would use to increase referrals to your ASC while maintaining high
patient satisfaction scores?
Another challenge facing ambulatory surgery centers is the recruitment of new physicians. Following
a national trend, many local hospitals and health systems are purchasing physician practices, which
could eventually lead to doctors referring surgical cases to a hospital s same day surgery department.
Assuming there is ample opportunity to increase surgical volume, how do you intend to recruit
physicians to practice via your ASC? What are some strategies/offerings you could employ?
The ASC you are currently managing is experiencing out of network challenges. Additionally, the
proposed reimbursement rates from payers do not match Medicare rates for your market. Most of your
ASC contracts are based on the Medicare fee schedule and because many of your surgeries are not on
that schedule, you have to negotiate a fee schedule on a case by case basis. What strategies could you
employ as you work with payors to contract for reasonable rates that could save you both money in
the short term?
In this changing environment, you are required to do more with less. Reimbursement rates are
declining; supply and implant costs, taxes, utilities, rent, salaries and benefits and other operating
costs are increasing and there are more regulatory requirements i.e.,

The Candy Diet Analysis
Simple thinking in a complex world is bound to bring disaster. The author, Seth Godin, wrote The
Candy Diet, a short blog published in 2017. He argues that we have been making society a place
where we think that it is okay to simplify non complex things. The blog utilizes some of the very same
tactics of today s writers to make his argument. Godin begins building his credibility by informing
men and women with supporting examples, then moves on to a reliable quote that has been
misinterpreted. However, at the end of the argument, his statement about being led back to curiosity
fails to inform the readers with enough information to reshape our failing society.
Godin first begins his blog by stating examples of how the media has been declining. He states that it
is important to realize that our best selling novels have been replaced by coloring books. Cable
channels like TLC and the History Channel show populist, non educational shows. Not only that, but
even newspapers inform their audience with information they do not care to hear. This has resulted in
the increase of general population not even purchasing newspapers. Seth Godin goes on to inform the
reader that the decline of thoughtful media has been discussed for a century stating that the decrease is
not anything new. The new information is, A fundamental shift not just in the profit seeking
gatekeepers, but in the culture as a whole. This shows the readers that Godin has done his research. It
also shows that he is passionate about the lack of depth and complexity in our modern
communications. The readers start to build trust in what he wrote because of his strong illustrations
about the topic.
To further build his thesis, Godin adds another strong example. He states that the media has an
algorithm. He uses an effective metaphor, we re on the edge of a breakneck race to the bottom, with
no brakes and no break in sight. This explains that we are quickly declining to the bottom. Although
the metaphor is fitting, the sentences building up to it are useless and weak. He could have either
taken them out or made them stronger by making the paragraphs longer. This might make the reader
question if Godin really knows what he is writing about.

DNA Profiling Essay example
From cases such as OJ Simpson to Chandra Levy, DNA profiling also called DNA fingerprinting or
DNA typing has played a major role in the criminal justice system. The law enforcement community
uses DNA profiling to rule out or identify suspects. Unlike hair microscopy, bite mark comparisons,
shoe print comparisons, and firearm tool mark analysis, DNA typing has been developed through
massive scientific research and has undergone meticulous scientific evaluation (Innocence Project).
DNA is a foolproof method of identifying a perpetrator of a crime.
Like fingerprints, DNA is unique, with the exception of identical twins; no two people have the same
DNA. DNA profiling is a technique that can identify the person responsible of a violent ... Show more

With over three million base pairs in the human gene, forensic scientists are able to distinguish a
person s genetic makeup.
. DNA profiling was first introduced to the criminal justice field in the mid 1980 s (DNA Initiative).
DNA profiling was first described in 1984 by Alec Jeffreys, a geneticist at the University of Leicester
in Britain (Aronson, 7). Dr. Jeffreys found that the genes that have no function, called junk DNA is
where most of the variation is used for DNA profiling (Aronson 9). This region contains DNA
sequences that repeat over and over again. Alec Jeffreys determined that the number of repeated
sections at different locations vary from individual to individual (DNA Initiative). Consequently these
repetitive regions became known as variable number of tandem repeats or VNTR s.
RFLP or restriction fragment length polymorphisms became the first scientifically accepted DNA
analysis method in the United States (Jones). The repeat segments are cut out of the DNA strand by a
restrictive enzyme that acts like scissors and the resulting fragments are sorted out by electrophoresis
(Saferstein 391). However, there are some drawbacks using the RFLP method in the forensic science
community. The RFLP technique requires a large amount of DNA and must be of high quality and
cannot be degraded (Jones). Forensic scientists and the law enforcement community

Setting in John SteinbeckĀ“s East of Eden
John Steinbeck s, East of Eden, is set in the Salinas Valley, a secluded area of Northern California. The
Salinas River runs through this beautiful, yet unforgiving land and provides fertility to the dry land.
While the valley has a rich geographical history spanning from sea, to forest, and then to the present
day valley, it is a difficult destination to find prosperity. Two dramatic mountain ranges form the
landscape of the valley that the author uses to exemplify the idea of good and evil. This theme is
further outlined by the strong personalities of characters Cathy, Aron, and Cal. Cathy and Aron have
opposing dispositions, similarly to Steinbeck s descriptions of the Santa Lucias and the Gabilan
mountains. In between the two peaks is the valley, where both good and evil preside. Cal s personality
mirrors this setting as he struggles internally between being good and evil for most of his life.
Steinbeck s emphasis on dramatic setting correlates directly to the personalities of the main characters
in order to outline the theme of conflict between good and evil in East of Eden. Evilness and its
conflict with goodness in East of Eden is emphasized in setting by the Santa Lucia Mountains and in
character by Cathy Ames. The mountains provoke a sense of fright and terror in Steinbeck as he
remarks, The Santa Lucias stood up against the sky to the west and kept the valley from the open sea,
and they were dark and brooding unfriendly and dangerous... I always found myself a

The Clash Of Zionism And Arab Nationalism Essay
Introduction to Middle East Politics
Midterm Essay
Minahil Tauseef
Clash of Nationalisms
The clash of Zionism and Arab nationalism has led to the longest running conflict in the history of the
world that shapes the politics of the Middle East to this day. The roots of the modern Arab Israeli
conflict can be found in the rise of Zionism and Arab nationalism towards the end of the 19th century.
The source of the conflict is territorial claims over a small piece of land that is the historical homeland
for two different nationalities. Palestine has historically held great significance for the Jews. Zionism
transformed that religious attachment and made it into a basis for a claim onnational grounds that this
is their national home. This set them in potential conflict with another nationality, the Arabs, who
seePalestine as historically and currently belonging to the Arabs, and in the Pan Islamic context, as
Muslim lands. Over the course of this paper, I will talk about why the Arab Israeli conflict was
inevitable and why these two ideologies were fated to clash.
In order to understand the clash, we must first understand the importance of the region that has been
the focus of two conflicting territorial claims. The Jewish claim to the state of Israel is rooted in the
nearly six thousand year old belief of Jews that Israel is the homeland promised to them by God in the
Torah. Jewish history has been a continuous cycle of exile and return to the promised land . The desire

many people spending time on social networking sites, it only seems logical that these sites might be

name a few possibilities.
With so many choices for social networking platforms, it is important to know what the social web is
all about, what different sites are out there and how they differ from one another. Chief among the
popular social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Each of these sites is utilized for
different reasons, and to best use them to your advantage in business, you should be aware of the
differences. Facebook, according to Shih (2010) and many of her sources, is the largest social

The Guide For The Perplexed
The Guide for the Perplexed is in a separate category different from the purely religious original
commentary in the Mishneh Torah. It is highly regarded as a major philosophical text in truth,
however it will be better and more correct to call it a theological treatise. It seeks to reconcile the
Jewish faith and religion with the challenges against it from philosophic and scientific texts at the
time, specifically the system of Aristotle and his followers. A great deal of its contents overlap with
much of the Commentary and the Mishneh Torah. As in Maimonides other works, he provides a

that have different meanings in different contexts. All the terms have both literal and figurative
meanings, which are subject to the context. These semantic subtleties lead many to misunderstand the
text thus confusing and perplexing them and contrasting these misconceptions with the realities of the
philosophical or scientific truth. Truth cannot conflict with itself, as the toner the word of God is
absolutely true and the conclusion of sound reason must also be true, any conflict between them

that Maimonides would be considered a theologian, due to the fact that he is interested in dealing with,

Before Milgram s findings, the fact that people were inclined to obey to authority figures was already
realized. He just confirmed this belief. Milgram followed effective steps by using precise procedures.
He made sure that the experiment reflected features of an actual situation in which a person would
obey to an authority figure: offering compensation (monetary reward in this experiment), being under
pressure (Prods 1 to 4 in this case), and mentioning that the person who obeys can withdraw. These
features can also be seen in a situation where a soldier is commanded to fire, for instance. A soldier
will get a monetary compensation, is under pressure to obey because he chose to be part of the
military, and he knows that he can resign at any time. Milgram created an experiment so precise and
detailed that more than enough evidence was demonstrated. In this experiment, subjects are explained

Vases In Greek Art
The piece of artwork that I am standing by is a vase crafted by the Greeks around the early classical
period of Ancient Greece. This vase is an example of the famous technique called red figured pottery,
with this technique the figures and images that resemble people and objects are a red orange color and
these figures float in a black background. In order for this technique to work the Greeks had to paint
the whole pot in slip, then once the slip was leather hard they would carefully carve out the figures

The vase I saw at the Art Institute of Chicago is known as a stamnos, and these types of vases were
used to store and hold liquids, like their drinking water. Each vase had its own unique story and the
Greeks told these stores through the carvings and paintings crafted into them. These images are very
detailed in their expressions, clothing, and designs surrounding the pottery, with these details we get
an idea of what life was like during those times some through their images depicting Gods or the
others that depicted religious rituals. In this particular vase, we can see there are three women and
crane standing around what appears to be an altar. This piece gives off a very spiritual and elegant
vibe, With the flowing lines and the way the drapery falls of the women s bodies it gives it a
sophisticated and delicate look. As you can see these women are all in composite view their face and
legs are facing towards the side while their torso is facing the front. the woman farthest left is raising
up an object that appears to be a mirror, she is stretching out her arm and looking towards the mirror
almost like she is about to hand it off to someone. The woman in the middle

Comparing Lord of the Flies with The Adventure of...
In today s society each one of us have our very own responsibilities and moralities. The development
of responsibility comes from how well we have matured. And our sense of morality comes from our
experience and knowledge. Theses two skills develop with the aid of parents or any adult, maturity
teaches us about the path of understanding things in the society and it leads to the decision to choose
from right or wrong. The events of Lord of flies can be easily compared to those in the book The
adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In these two books , it deals with the two main characters who are
not old enough to hold such responsibilities. Therefore, in both books a change in society enabled the
characters to experience and develop important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the book the characters contends with the influence of society s values and in the end
makes a decision. In these two books the main characters are opened up to freedom in a young age in
a society with no adults and rules. They enjoy the freedom at first in both books. Finn says .. so good
to be free again. The fact that they don t know how to take care of themselves is a major drawback.
The main characters in both these books have to teach their own selves and others how to do things in
the situation they are placed in. In Lord of Flies the characters are stuck on an island with no adults.
The characters all go through changes as they try to adjust to this new place as well as the different
people. In this book there are even children who are just 5 years old they cannot just depend on any of
the older boys to be there for each of them, they all have their individual responsibilities. Aren t there
any grown ups? No. Merridew say down on a trunk and looked around the circle. Then we ll have to
look after ourselves. At this point they have no knowledge and have to develop maturity as quickly as
possible. The characters have to take care of each other and work together if they want to survive. In
the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Finn runs away from home and is travelling on a river with Jim .
**?** They both as well deal with different people who they cannot rely on so they rely on each other
and they take care of each together and work

Columbine Reflection
Columbine by Dave Cullen presented me with a vast array of knowledge and insight into an incident
which I had minimal knowledge of. What very little knowledge I had came from exposure to the
incident through classroom discussions from years past, and occasional references to Columbine
through media vectors such as television and music. I knew the incident occurred after I was born, but
I was unaware of the actual date and far too young to have any sort of recollection in regards to it. I
was aware that there were two shooters who committed the act, but I had no idea what led them to do
what they did or how they carried out their act. I also was aware that the lunchroom played a
significant role in the incident, but I thought this was because where the majority of the shooting took
place when in fact it was not. I found the concepts of religious influence, media influence, and the
professionalism of the police to be main themes throughout the book. These were just a few
overarching ideas the kept rearing their heads as I read. Each one pertaining to ... Show more content

That is they saw alterations in their behavior in the time leading up to the Columbine attack. Typically
this behavior change was noticed by Eric and Dylan s friends. Chris Morris, Nate Dykeman and Zach
Heckler were all aware that their friends had been making and testing out pipe bombs. Chris
remembers Eric talking directly about attacking the school, saying something to the effect of cutting
power to the school and setting PVC bombs at the exits with screws for shrapnel (Cullen, 89). Zach
Heckler also told Robyn Anderson that she could picture Eric and Dylan killing people (Cullen, 88). It
may not be possible to profile a school shooter, but there were many blatantly obvious signs that
something was going on with Eric and Dylan, if one of their friends had spoken up the attack may

Foreign Body Granuloma
FDG is a non physiological analogue of glucose that once injected, is taken up by cell membrane
glucose receptors (Mainly, the glucose transporter 1 molecule, GLUT 1) which transport it into the
intracellular compartment, where it is phosphorylated into FDG 6 phosphate by the enzymatic action
of hexokinase. Cancer cells show increased uptake of glucose (due to an overexpression of glucose
transporter proteins) and increased rate of glycolysis. However, following phosphorylation by
hexokinase, FDG becomes trapped in the cancer cell, failing to undergo further metabolism due to
down regulation of phosphatase [1] .
Inflammation is the primary response of the lung immune system to infection or irritation like an
occult foreign body. Activated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

nodules in a patient with history of left lung cancer post resection [20]. A biopsy was performed which
confirmed the nodule to be a granuloma with foreign body giant cells and debris of calcifications.

Identity Theory Mental States
Identity theory attempts to explain the relationship between the body and the mind. It states that some
mental states are the same as some brain states. This implies that one could group mental events like
pain, pleasure or hunger into events that correlate with physical states of the brain; for example, when
one feels pain, C fibers are firing(mason, identity theory ). However, there are many objections to this
theory. Overall, these objections are compelling and show that identity theory is weak and untrue. In
this essay, I will argue that mental states are not identical to brain states by breaking down the Identity
Theory. Identity theory groups everything the mind experiences into parcels that correlate with
physical activities in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even if it is presumed that this disjunctive physical kinds theory is totally correct and accurate, it can
not save Identity Theory. Again, it is possible to look at the hypothetical example of an alien life form
that evolved totally differently than any life form on Earth evolved. There is no reason for c fiber
firing to equal pain in this being. C fiber firing could equate to any mental state in this hypothetical
being, from pain to love to hunger to sleepiness. There is no reason to assume that it must equate to
pain. Plus, once again, reducing and refining Identity Theory in this manner makes it less informative
and useful. As with restricting Identity Theory to specific times, disjunctive physical kinds restrict
Identity Theory to the point of absurdity and make it a theory that is in no way practical for explaining
real experiences in the world. Neither the cow nor the human nor the hypothetical alien can be
adequately described using a theory that is so

Darwin s Theory Of Mate Selection
Mate Selection Mate selection is the picking and choosing of sexual partners that can be based on both
physical and biological processes. Mate selection, also called sexual selection, is not a random
process. Sexual selection is an evolutionary force that explains the never ending changes of
humankind. According to Darwin s Theory of Sexual Selection, sexual selection is fueled by two
fundamental ideas (Stanford 98). The first idea is that men struggle to find mates. The second idea is
that females struggle to choose the perfect mate. Now, the reason why men struggle to find mates is
because men do not necessarily get to pick and choose their mates. It is mainly females that do the
picking and choosing of mates. Females have limited reproductive potential in comparison to males.
Females have far greater levels of parental investment in comparison to males, since males only need
to gain access to a female, while females have to carry the baby to full term, feed ... Show more

Carey states that females with a waist to hip ratio of 0.7 are most desirable by males. Carey states that
female waist to hip ratios in between 0.67 to 1.18 are attractive to males. A waist to hip ratio of 0.7
means that the waist is narrower than the hips. Likewise, females are attracted to males with a waist to
hip ratio in between 0.8 to 1.0. The reason for human attractiveness to particular waist to hip ratios are
due to the underlying health benefits. Human waist to hip ratio is relative to the distribution of body
fat in the body, and the distribution of body fat is due to two sex hormones; estrogen and testosterone.
Women with the right mixture of estrogen, and men with the right mixture of testosterone will have
ideal waist to hip ratios. According to Carey, men and women that fall into the ideal respective waist
to hip ratios are less susceptible to disease. Also, women with ideal waist to hip ratios have less
difficulty with conceiving

Mohawk Saint And The Unredeemed Captive
Throughout the stories told in both Mohawk Saint and The Unredeemed Captive, the unintended
consequences of attempting to convert the American Indians to Christianity are powerful players in
the unfolding events. When these Christian groups arrived in the New World, they came armed with
the word of God that they wished to share among a group of people that have never before
encountered the concept of Christianity. While eventually these relationships improved and Christians
and American Indians began to have closer contact, there were still results from the conversion
process that no one could have expected when the progress had started. In both of these stories, the
unintended consequences of the encounters between Christian religious and ... Show more content on

She was admitted to take communion on Christmas day, since Catherine appeared to be an exceptional
case... Catherine s initiation into Catholicism was a rapid process and she continued to be skilled her
faith for the rest of her life. This was contrary to what the Jesuit priests had in mind for their
conversion of the Mohawks. As far as they had considered, savages and saints belonged to different
contexts. When converting the Mohawks, the Jesuits had no intentions of possibly finding a future
saint in their midst. The categories were completely separate. It was only later in Catherine s life that
the members of her community began to recognize that she ...possessed extraordinary spiritual powers
and people began seeking her out. While she was not extremely popular and died mostly in solitude,
the story of her piety became known throughout the community. The Jesuits, who had believed in the
separation between the Natives and true religious piety, were forced to reconsider their interpretations
of Catherine s life and her religious devotion. Eventually, this was cumulate in the writings about her
life and the process of her canonization. Although the Jesuits probably never considered finding a
future saint among the Mohawks, they found that with Catherine s story, a compelling case could be
made for her canonization. One of the key

  • 2. The Adaptive Voice The Adaptive Voice Our actions are what define us as humans. Words are part of our actions. Therefore, our voice defines who we are, so when we change our voice we change the fabric of who we are. Zadie Smith, the author of Speaking in Tongues , knows this first hand when she moved from a working class district of London to Cambridge. She felt that she was able to have both, the Cambridge voice and the Willesden voice, and use them to expand her base of knowledge; like learning a new language. However, as she became more engrossed in her studies the core of her personality that kept her at her roots disappeared and she was consumed by the Cambridge life style. She lost herself in Cambridge because she was imitating the Cambridge life style and according to Susan Blackmore s essay Strange Creatures humans imitate naturally to learn. As humans imitate they change and because they change, their voices change as well; building an idea within us that our voices need to be unified, or singular. When we change voices we change mindsets making it incredibly difficult to switch between two mindsets on a whim. Our voices must be singular in order for us to correctly display our identity to the world. When you pick up a new meme it is like learning a new language, it requires flexibility. Zadie Smith says flexibility is something that requires work if it is to be maintained (Smith 248). This is something that can be said about all forms of learning. Whether it is learning a ... High School Life Analysis Four years ago, we, the students of the class of twenty seventeen, began our journey a journey filled with ups and downs; a journey filled with positive and negative emotions; a journey filled with success and failure. It seems like it was just yesterday that we began this difficult yet rewarding journey through high school. I remember the days when we were all freshmen, and we could not wait for this moment to come. We were impatient continuously counting down the days, weeks, semesters, and years until we would graduate. Now, this day has finally come, but are we satisfied with the success that we have created for ourselves? Personally, I believe that the things that we have accomplished in the past four years are phenomenal. No challenge was left alone without giving it a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thanks for being supportive at both the best of times and the worst of times. You actually made school somewhat tolerable, and you helped keep my sanity. Without you, life would be boring, so I thank you for making it enjoyable. As you can see, many people have played major roles in our journey to success. These great people have helped by opening up many opportunities, and by taking these opportunities, we can make the world a better place for future generations. If we can accomplish this, which I believe we can, we will show the greatest gratitude of all time. • 4. What Is Demand Model Of Supply And Demand Supply and demand is a model for understanding the determination of the price of quantity of a good sold on the market. The explanation works by looking at two different groups buyers and sellers and asking how they interrelate. The supply and demand model relies on a high level of competition, meaning that bidding can only take place if there is a high amount of buyers and sellers in the market. Buyers bid against each other and thus raise the price, while sellers bid against each other and thus lower the price. The equilibrium is a point at which all the bidding has been done; nobody has a reason to offer higher prices or accept lower prices. In this essay I will be critically analysing the supply/demand model in understanding actual world supply, demand and market behaviour. I will highlight this through the aid of diagrams and examples. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This model will work most accurately when there is perfect competition. Perfect competition arises when consumers and producers of a product are price takers. This means they have no power to influence the market price. However, this is not a realistic proposal because no market is going to be perfectly competitive. Although the supply demand framework still gives a good estimate for what is happening in the market most of the time. To an economists demand refers to both the willingness and ability to pay for a good. When the price of a good falls, the quantity demanded will fall. This applies to both individuals and whole market demand. This is known as the law of demand. The relationship between Quantity Demanded (Qd) and price can be shown in a table (curve). Price is located on the vertical axis and demand is located on the horizontal. The demand curve will have a negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

John Dunbar from Dances with Wolves, Dr. Ethan Powell from Instinct, and Captain John Smith from Pocahontas find a natural draw to nature that put them in an environment to learn. A same motif that I have found throughout the three movies is each character who freely offers to take in a venture. For example, Lt. The story of Costco begins with the exemplary leadership from the co founders, James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman. The cofounders launched Costco with the idea of having a high volume of inventory which they could sell for low cost. In order to provide their items at low cost and also pay their employees well to keep them motivated, Sinegal and Brotman concocted a brilliant idea. I am interested in this project because I have always liked science fiction/fantasy movies. I like to think about the possibilities that technology holds for our future. I am also interested in how technology influences our culture. I was in high school when this movie came out and had limited access to computers at that time. I wasn t concerned with the impact of new computer technology then, but remember hearing people say that machines would someday run the world. For example, I worked for a grocery store in the 1980s and remember other employees worrying that new machines were being developed that would replace the cashiers, and we would all be out of a job. I think this movie would probably have a bigger impact now that computers are such a large part of our everyday lives. • 11. Innate Response Essay The immune system is composed of two parts firstly the innate system and secondly the adaptive system. The innate response is the first line of defence and relies on pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) to recognise specific pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and provide a rapid response to the recognised pathogen. This system also has the complement system and phagocytic cells as its disposal. Pathogens expresses PAMPs which activate antigen presenting cells (APC), such as dendritic cells (DC), through ligation of PRR (e.g. Toll like receptors) found on the APC surface. • 12. Cloud Computing Research Paper Cloud Computing Research Paper Introduction Cloud computing is revolutionizing the use software globally at a very rapid pace as it is completely redefining the economics of how software is purchased and used. Web 2.0 technologies and their underlying design precepts are responsible for the current and future generations of social networks (Bernoff, Li, 2008). Both have immediate and significant impacts on the operations of businesses and the major contributions each makes are explained in this analysis. Analysis of the Business Uses of the Cloud and Web 2.0 Technologies Cloud computing has drastically reordered the economics of how every size and type of business uses software. For the large enterprise there is no longer the need to go through an extensive capital expense (CAPEX) budgeting process, often involving the board of directors of a business (Aljabre, 2012). Cloud computing software is often pad for through operating expense (OPEX) budgets, which shifts the control of its budgeting to the line of business managers or those managers and executives responsible for a given business unit. This dynamic alone has completely reordered the enterprise software market, as cloud based applications can often be modified significantly faster than on premise applications (Lin, Chen, 2012). As a result of this flexibility, enterprises, medium size and small businesses are all relying on cloud based applications to automate those process areas that had been expensive and ... • 13. Characteristics Of The Romantic Period The term used to describe European art, literature and music from 1780 to 1840 is the word romantic . One of the reasons that scholars chose to call this the Romantic Period was because of the exaggeration in expression of human emotion during it. This is commonly seen as the main characteristic of the period, but there are many others that cannot be ignored. Within Romantic literature, there was a preoccupation with economic and political issues due to the industrial revolution, a development of female writers and gothic fiction, and themes of nature, for Poland specifically, and future fate of the country. A common misconception about the Romantic Period is that it was flawless and perfect. But, in reality there was economic recession, widespread unemployment, and indirect taxation (30 Great Myths about the Romantics xiv) due to urbanization and the Industrial Revolution. This led Adam Smith, David Ricardo, David Malthus, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill to publish their works which would help reshape and guide economics and politics during their time, and in the future. Accompanying the publication of their works, there were people who critiqued their published theories. Those who critiqued them most commonly believed that the authors ideologies were too commercial. Some authors who portrayed their disapproval of the political economy were Coleridge, Southey, Wodsworth, Shelley and Blake (King 47). For example, in Song to the Men of England by Shelley, there ... • 15. Kant s Ethical Theory Of Ethics According to MacKinnon Fiala (2015), Kant s ethical theory is a deontological theory. A deontology theory is based on duties, obligations, and rights (p. 111). The focus of this essay is how Kant uses the Categorical Imperative to explain the nature of ethics. Immanuel Kant s basic moral principle the Categorical Imperative states, I should never act except in such a way that I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law (Giambusso, 2016, para. 2). His theory does not focus on the consequences of actions as the consequences have no part in deontological ethics, but the imperative that a person must do what is morally right without exception. One can use the Categorical Imperative as a formula to test if an action is morally right or wrong, and if done correctly the result will be the same for everyone. So, no one has to tell you what is right or wrong because when you use the formula correctly you can see for yourself what the correct ethical action is no matter the situation. Kant s example to explain the idea is lying to get out of a problematic situation. If one can substitute a certain situation for a rule of action (the maxim), and then can make this rule of action the universal rule, the rule for everyone to follow and the rule does not lead to a contradiction, then and only then is the action morally right. For example: The situation: If I lie, I can get out of this problematic situation. The maxim (the rule of action): It is okay to lie to get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The effect of an additive depends very much on the influence: it has on the structure of water or its ability to compete with solvent of water molecules. A convenient quantitation result of the solute additive on the solubility of another solute may be obtained by Setschenowequation. • 20. The Expanding Field of Stem Cell Research Stem cell research is one of the most widely expanding areas of scientific research being conducted all over the world today. In basic terms, stem cell research is the research of stem cells; however in actuality is much more complicated. A stem cell is a cell with the ability to develop into any of the cell types that make up the tissues and organs of the body. This makes these cells highly useful and provides limitless potential in the field of regenerative medicine. There are two expansive lines of stem cell research, which involve multipotent stem cells and pluripotent stem cells. Multipotent stem cells are stem cells which can only specialise into cells of the same type of tissue, for example muscle stem cells can only become specialised muscle cells. This type of stem cell are known as adult stem cells and are found in the brain, blood, muscles, skin, bone marrow and other fully developed parts of the body. On the other hand, pluripotent stem cells can differentiate and specialise into any cell of the body. These are embryonic stem cells which are found in embryo s that are five to seven days old, and umbilical cords. In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka, a scientist in Japan discovered that stem cells could also be generated from mature, fully specialised cells. These stem cells are known as induced pluripotent stem cells, and are reprogrammed so that they can mimic embryonic stem cells and become every type of cell. There is much difficulty in the research of adult stem cells, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has helped shape Canada into one of the worlds most politically and economically powerful countries; a country that is strong, independent, and united. There was a series of events which led to the confederation of Canada, some which are more significant than others. However, I believe that despite the significance of events such as the British encouragement of uniting its North American colonies, the central and key reason for confederation was the fear of potential American (Yankee) inhabitance (whether by persuasion or invasion) of the divided and vast British North American colonies, and the way that the Fathers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John A. Macdonald, the prime minister of Canada at the time, had seen first hand the effect of divided colonies and the devastating impact that it could have on a nation. However, there was a serious and impending threat against the colonies of Canada from the northern United States, not only because of the British support of the southern states during the war, but also because of three specific events: The St. Albans Raid, the Trent Crisis, and the Alabama Affair. The St. Albans raid involved a group of confederate agents who robbed over two hundred thousand dollars (a significant amount of money in the 1800 s) from three banks in St. Albans, Vermont. These raiders fled to Canada, and although they were caught and the money was returned, they were not persecuted because they could not be trialed in Canada when the crime had been committed in the United States. President Lincoln prevented the northerners from pursuing the raiders into Canada to murder them, as this could have potentially resulted in a war, which would in turn benefit the southern states. The Trent affair once again raised tensions, when two Confederate diplomats were arrested in Boston while transferring a mail packet Trent to England. This greatly angered London, as they sent many troops as reinforcements to protect their colonies, eventually the diplomats were released and tensions eased once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He argues that we have been making society a place where we think that it is okay to simplify non complex things. The blog utilizes some of the very same tactics of today s writers to make his argument. Godin begins building his credibility by informing men and women with supporting examples, then moves on to a reliable quote that has been misinterpreted. However, at the end of the argument, his statement about being led back to curiosity fails to inform the readers with enough information to reshape our failing society. Godin first begins his blog by stating examples of how the media has been declining. He states that it is important to realize that our best selling novels have been replaced by coloring books. Cable channels like TLC and the History Channel show populist, non educational shows. Not only that, but even newspapers inform their audience with information they do not care to hear. This has resulted in the increase of general population not even purchasing newspapers. Seth Godin goes on to inform the reader that the decline of thoughtful media has been discussed for a century stating that the decrease is not anything new. The new information is, A fundamental shift not just in the profit seeking gatekeepers, but in the culture as a whole. This shows the readers that Godin has done his research. It also shows that he is passionate about the lack of depth and complexity in our modern communications. The readers start to build trust in what he wrote because of his strong illustrations about the topic. To further build his thesis, Godin adds another strong example. He states that the media has an algorithm. He uses an effective metaphor, we re on the edge of a breakneck race to the bottom, with no brakes and no break in sight. This explains that we are quickly declining to the bottom. Although the metaphor is fitting, the sentences building up to it are useless and weak. He could have either taken them out or made them stronger by making the paragraphs longer. This might make the reader question if Godin really knows what he is writing about. ... DNA profiling was first introduced to the criminal justice field in the mid 1980 s (DNA Initiative). DNA profiling was first described in 1984 by Alec Jeffreys, a geneticist at the University of Leicester in Britain (Aronson, 7). Dr. Jeffreys found that the genes that have no function, called junk DNA is where most of the variation is used for DNA profiling (Aronson 9). This region contains DNA sequences that repeat over and over again. Alec Jeffreys determined that the number of repeated sections at different locations vary from individual to individual (DNA Initiative). Consequently these repetitive regions became known as variable number of tandem repeats or VNTR s. RFLP or restriction fragment length polymorphisms became the first scientifically accepted DNA analysis method in the United States (Jones). The repeat segments are cut out of the DNA strand by a restrictive enzyme that acts like scissors and the resulting fragments are sorted out by electrophoresis (Saferstein 391). However, there are some drawbacks using the RFLP method in the forensic science community. • 27. Setting in John SteinbeckĀ“s East of Eden John Steinbeck s, East of Eden, is set in the Salinas Valley, a secluded area of Northern California. The Salinas River runs through this beautiful, yet unforgiving land and provides fertility to the dry land. While the valley has a rich geographical history spanning from sea, to forest, and then to the present day valley, it is a difficult destination to find prosperity. Two dramatic mountain ranges form the landscape of the valley that the author uses to exemplify the idea of good and evil. This theme is further outlined by the strong personalities of characters Cathy, Aron, and Cal. Cathy and Aron have opposing dispositions, similarly to Steinbeck s descriptions of the Santa Lucias and the Gabilan mountains. In between the two peaks is the valley, where both good and evil preside. Cal s personality mirrors this setting as he struggles internally between being good and evil for most of his life. Steinbeck s emphasis on dramatic setting correlates directly to the personalities of the main characters in order to outline the theme of conflict between good and evil in East of Eden. Evilness and its conflict with goodness in East of Eden is emphasized in setting by the Santa Lucia Mountains and in character by Cathy Ames. The Clash Of Zionism And Arab Nationalism Essay Introduction to Middle East Politics Midterm Essay Minahil Tauseef Clash of Nationalisms The clash of Zionism and Arab nationalism has led to the longest running conflict in the history of the world that shapes the politics of the Middle East to this day. The roots of the modern Arab Israeli conflict can be found in the rise of Zionism and Arab nationalism towards the end of the 19th century. The source of the conflict is territorial claims over a small piece of land that is the historical homeland for two different nationalities. Palestine has historically held great significance for the Jews. Zionism transformed that religious attachment and made it into a basis for a claim onnational grounds that this is their national home. This set them in potential conflict with another nationality, the Arabs, who seePalestine as historically and currently belonging to the Arabs, and in the Pan Islamic context, as Muslim lands. Over the course of this paper, I will talk about why the Arab Israeli conflict was inevitable and why these two ideologies were fated to clash. In order to understand the clash, we must first understand the importance of the region that has been the focus of two conflicting territorial claims. The Jewish claim to the state of Israel is rooted in the nearly six thousand year old belief of Jews that Israel is the homeland promised to them by God in the Torah. Before Milgram s findings, the fact that people were inclined to obey to authority figures was already realized. He just confirmed this belief. Milgram followed effective steps by using precise procedures. He made sure that the experiment reflected features of an actual situation in which a person would obey to an authority figure: offering compensation (monetary reward in this experiment), being under pressure (Prods 1 to 4 in this case), and mentioning that the person who obeys can withdraw. These features can also be seen in a situation where a soldier is commanded to fire, for instance. A soldier will get a monetary compensation, is under pressure to obey because he chose to be part of the military, and he knows that he can resign at any time. Milgram created an experiment so precise and detailed that more than enough evidence was demonstrated. In this experiment, subjects are explained that this is a learning experiment to ... study the effects of punishment on memory (4). Yet, the real intention here is to measure the participants compliance towards the experimenter. This controversy is unethical as subjects are volunteering for a cause that does not exist. They are misled since they are not exposed to the real purpose of this study. Nevertheless, this experiment was appropriate. He made a good point on how in today s society parents are resulting in becoming their child s BFF (best friend forever) rather than a parent. He says parents are losing control. He states, In some cases parents already stressed from long days at work and having no desire to spend precious time squabbling with children. and most importantly, They gave up on raising children in exchange for peace and quiet on the home front. This rings true in some cases but spanking and using physical punishment isn t the way to get your kids to stop arguing or resisting. I take this experience first hand. I believe that the reason children these days are fighting their parents is because it is a different world, society is changing. In today s world you give respect to get respect. Many kids, like myself, won t listen to the parent that says no just because but when they have an actual, understandable reason why, then I understand and I listen. In today s world a child wants to be treated like a person, we want to be able to make our own mistakes, learn our own lessons, and control our own lives. Maybe we feel as if as we get older that we know what is better for ourselves than our parents do. We are the independent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Vases In Greek Art The piece of artwork that I am standing by is a vase crafted by the Greeks around the early classical period of Ancient Greece. This vase is an example of the famous technique called red figured pottery, with this technique the figures and images that resemble people and objects are a red orange color and these figures float in a black background. In order for this technique to work the Greeks had to paint the whole pot in slip, then once the slip was leather hard they would carefully carve out the figures and designs with special tools and needles to get the effect and depth they wanted. Once the images are all carved out they would then fire the pot in a kiln, they had to do this in a specific way so the slip that was still surrounding the pottery would ... Each vase had its own unique story and the Greeks told these stores through the carvings and paintings crafted into them. These images are very detailed in their expressions, clothing, and designs surrounding the pottery, with these details we get an idea of what life was like during those times some through their images depicting Gods or the others that depicted religious rituals. In this particular vase, we can see there are three women and crane standing around what appears to be an altar. This piece gives off a very spiritual and elegant vibe, With the flowing lines and the way the drapery falls of the women s bodies it gives it a sophisticated and delicate look. As you can see these women are all in composite view their face and legs are facing towards the side while their torso is facing the front. the woman farthest left is raising up an object that appears to be a mirror, she is stretching out her arm and looking towards the mirror almost like she is about to hand it off to someone. • 43. Columbine Reflection Columbine by Dave Cullen presented me with a vast array of knowledge and insight into an incident which I had minimal knowledge of. What very little knowledge I had came from exposure to the incident through classroom discussions from years past, and occasional references to Columbine through media vectors such as television and music. I knew the incident occurred after I was born, but I was unaware of the actual date and far too young to have any sort of recollection in regards to it. I was aware that there were two shooters who committed the act, but I had no idea what led them to do what they did or how they carried out their act. I also was aware that the lunchroom played a significant role in the incident, but I thought this was because where the majority of the shooting took place when in fact it was not. I found the concepts of religious influence, media influence, and the professionalism of the police to be main themes throughout the book. These were just a few overarching ideas the kept rearing their heads as I read. Each one pertaining to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chris remembers Eric talking directly about attacking the school, saying something to the effect of cutting power to the school and setting PVC bombs at the exits with screws for shrapnel (Cullen, 89). Zach Heckler also told Robyn Anderson that she could picture Eric and Dylan killing people (Cullen, 88). • 44. Foreign Body Granuloma FDG is a non physiological analogue of glucose that once injected, is taken up by cell membrane glucose receptors (Mainly, the glucose transporter 1 molecule, GLUT 1) which transport it into the intracellular compartment, where it is phosphorylated into FDG 6 phosphate by the enzymatic action of hexokinase. Cancer cells show increased uptake of glucose (due to an overexpression of glucose transporter proteins) and increased rate of glycolysis. However, following phosphorylation by hexokinase, FDG becomes trapped in the cancer cell, failing to undergo further metabolism due to down regulation of phosphatase [1] . • 45. Identity Theory Mental States Identity theory attempts to explain the relationship between the body and the mind. It states that some mental states are the same as some brain states. This implies that one could group mental events like pain, pleasure or hunger into events that correlate with physical states of the brain; for example, when one feels pain, C fibers are firing(mason, identity theory ). However, there are many objections to this theory. Overall, these objections are compelling and show that identity theory is weak and untrue. In this essay, I will argue that mental states are not identical to brain states by breaking down the Identity Theory. Identity theory groups everything the mind experiences into parcels that correlate with physical activities in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if it is presumed that this disjunctive physical kinds theory is totally correct and accurate, it can not save Identity Theory. Again, it is possible to look at the hypothetical example of an alien life form that evolved totally differently than any life form on Earth evolved. There is no reason for c fiber firing to equal pain in this being. C fiber firing could equate to any mental state in this hypothetical being, from pain to love to hunger to sleepiness. There is no reason to assume that it must equate to pain. Plus, once again, reducing and refining Identity Theory in this manner makes it less informative and useful. As with restricting Identity Theory to specific times, disjunctive physical kinds restrict Identity Theory to the point of absurdity and make it a theory that is in no way practical for explaining real experiences in the world. Neither the cow nor the human nor the hypothetical alien can be adequately described using a theory that is so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Darwin s Theory Of Mate Selection Mate Selection Mate selection is the picking and choosing of sexual partners that can be based on both physical and biological processes. Mate selection, also called sexual selection, is not a random process. Sexual selection is an evolutionary force that explains the never ending changes of humankind. According to Darwin s Theory of Sexual Selection, sexual selection is fueled by two fundamental ideas (Stanford 98). The first idea is that men struggle to find mates. The second idea is that females struggle to choose the perfect mate. Now, the reason why men struggle to find mates is because men do not necessarily get to pick and choose their mates. It is mainly females that do the picking and choosing of mates. Females have limited reproductive potential in comparison to males. Females have far greater levels of parental investment in comparison to males, since males only need to gain access to a female, while females have to carry the baby to full term, feed ... Carey states that female waist to hip ratios in between 0.67 to 1.18 are attractive to males. A waist to hip ratio of 0.7 means that the waist is narrower than the hips. Likewise, females are attracted to males with a waist to hip ratio in between 0.8 to 1.0. The reason for human attractiveness to particular waist to hip ratios are due to the underlying health benefits. Human waist to hip ratio is relative to the distribution of body fat in the body, and the distribution of body fat is due to two sex hormones; estrogen and testosterone. Women with the right mixture of estrogen, and men with the right mixture of testosterone will have ideal waist to hip ratios. According to Carey, men and women that fall into the ideal respective waist to hip ratios are less susceptible to disease. When these Christian groups arrived in the New World, they came armed with the word of God that they wished to share among a group of people that have never before encountered the concept of Christianity. Catherine s initiation into Catholicism was a rapid process and she continued to be skilled her faith for the rest of her life. When converting the Mohawks, the Jesuits had no intentions of possibly finding a future saint in their midst. The categories were completely separate. It was only later in Catherine s life that the members of her community began to recognize that she ...possessed extraordinary spiritual powers and people began seeking her out. While she was not extremely popular and died mostly in solitude, the story of her piety became known throughout the community. The Jesuits, who had believed in the separation between the Natives and true religious piety, were forced to reconsider their interpretations of Catherine s life and her religious devotion.
