Neil Gaiman s The Graveyard Book
The Graveyard Book was written from a simple inspiration, but the novel expressed a unique plotline.
Neil Gaiman was motivated by his at the time two year old son that rode his BMX in the cemetery.
The Graveyard book was published by Harper Collins in 2008, but it also accomplished many awards
in 2010, such as: the Newbery Medal, Hugo Award for Best Novel, Locus Award for Best Young Adult
Novel, and Carnegie Award. These awards were not received without purpose, as this novel had many
intriguing aspects. Neil Gaiman created a complex plot with many captivating characters and
creatures. The main character, Bod, an adventurous, friendly child was orphaned when his family was
murdered by a strange man coated in black. He was the only living

Analysis Of The Poem The Daughter Of The Dancers
The Virtue Of Innocence
Innocence is a glorified trait in nearly any culture around the world. Many strive to keep the innocence
they are born with, and plenty others spend a lifetime attempting to regain the innocence they have
lost with age. In the following photos, innocence is a common theme, which each photographer
approaches in a unique way. There is a dull and unsettling truth behind the innocent demonstration of
young ladies acting much more mature than their age. Manuel Alvarez Bravo is one of the premier
figures of modern photography and the main photographer among the immense Mexican artists of the
twentieth century. In The Daughter of the Dancers, Bravo illustrates the idea of youthfulness on the
verge of loosing its innocence. Sally Mann, a photographer from the 1980s 90s, caught a reflection of
grown up moves inside the innocence and youth of adolescents in Candy Cigarette through her
utilization of organization, field point, and technique. In 1985 National Geographic photographer
Steve McCurry went through Afghan towns concentrating on the evacuees and recording their
hardships. The Afghan Girl is a classical image of lost innocence; the girl was forced to grow up way
to fast. Her innocence did not survive, but she did.
The innocence of children is secured by the individuals who adore them with the goal that they grow
up as actually unaffected by preventable undesirable contributions as could be expected under the
circumstances. With her back to the camera,

Types Of Dwellings Used By Ancient Romans
Introduction Up to that time, the western world had never seen an empire as extensive and
encompassing as the Roman Empire (Mark, 2011). Even after her fall tales of her exploits continue to
be told and retold. However, the Roman Empire was not merely comprised of emperors, generals and
poets. Like all civilizations that came before it and that have come since, the domain of Rome
comprised of many different people from varying social classes who lived in homes just like people
today. For this unit s discussion, I will discuss the layout and function of the various types of
dwellings used by the ancient Romans and provide my thoughts regarding how those comparisons
compare to the dwellings of today. Discussion The type of dwelling occupied by an ancient Roman
was contingent on their place on the social ladder and their vocation (Kirby, 2001b). Furthermore,
whereas a farmer would prefer to live out in the country, a merchant, in all likelihood, would prefer to
live in the city (Kirby, 2001b). Not unlike today, a substantial portion of the urban population lived in
apartments (Kirby, 2001a). Most rentals were located in large complexes called Insula, some of which
were as tall as seventy feet (seven stories) (Kirby, 2001a). These apartments would have been crowded
usually composed of a single room that doubled as sleeping and living area (Moulton, 1998b). Tenets
would have shared a common culinary and sanitary area while plumbing would not have reached

person who represents these qualities is Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio. As an award winning actor and
an avid environmentalist, he has had an influential role in not only entertaining people but also helping
the environment. Leonardo DiCaprio was born in Los Angeles, California on November 11, 1974

No Chance Against Society Essay
No Chance Against Society
Throughout this world of unique individuals, the majority of human beings have generally conformed
into different societal norms that follow one path and one dream without stopping to think of an
alternative path. Complications step in front of individual prosperity and these obstacles spring from
the pressures of the popular society. Within the short story, A Hunger Artist , by Franz Kafka, the
author proves and disproves a point best stated by Robin George Collinwood, that; Perfect freedom is
reserved for the man who lives by his own work and in that work, does what he wants to do. The
protagonist, within this short story, freely chooses his career path as a hunger artist, but as the story
continues, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the artist s quest for superiority, he uses his suffering to produce a feeling more intense and
emotional than his audience. Eventually, the audience loses interest in the hunger artist and is able to
easily glimpse at the anguish and happily move past it. This combination of dependency, need for
support, and feeling of superiority signifies the hunger artist s endless dissatisfaction with himself.
The society subconsciously pushes the hunger artist into a vicious cycle of suffrage as he continues to
do what he claims to love, ultimately resulting in societal dominance.
The hunger artist, at best, is in complete control over is pain and hunger as he exercises his free will to
do what he chooses. Throughout the story, the hunger artist proves time and time again to be a living
contradiction. At one point, the artist admits that fasting is easy, but at the end he confesses that he
was simply never able to find any food he liked; For he alone knew....how easy it was to fast, But you
shouldn t admire it...because I couldn t find the food I liked (Kafka). The hunger artist is constantly
alienated from the world and is never accepted by society. Metaphorically speaking, the act of fasting
represents suffrage and an abused free will. Had the world been more compliant to this unique
profession, the hunger artist would not have suffered and good could have sparked from all this. As
the society moves in one direction, the one that chooses to take the path less

Critical Criminology Marc Lepines
Analysis
Miller (2009) indicated that, Critical criminology is an umbrella term for a variety of criminological
theories and perspectives that challenge core assumptions of mainstream (or conventional)
criminology in some substantial way and provide alternative approaches to understanding crime and
its control, (p. 210). Some of the critical perspectives of crime include Marxists, political economy,
and Critical feminism. Donnermeyer DeKeseredy (2008) summarized critical criminology as
perspectives that consider views sources of crime as a weakness within the society due to issues of
class, ethnic, and gender. A few people in the political or other class elites control the capitalist

dominance, as the root cause of women s oppression, (p. 29). Individuals who perpetrate crime against
women have deep discrimination towards them due to male base power and privileges in that
particular society. Radical feminists experience strong influence by the male dominance concept.
Domestic violence is some of the radical feminist manifestation of male power. Socialist feminism

Informative Speech About The PAL Program
Informative Speech
Hi my name is Morgan Delgado and my informative speech is about the PAL program. David Green
said, You need an attitude of service. You re not just serving yourself. You help others to grow up and
you grow with them. Many high school students say they are too busy with schoolwork and
extracurricular activities to find time to volunteer. What if there was a program that allowed students
to help others during the school day? The Peer Assistance and Leadership or PAL program for short,
allows students to help others while having fun, earning school credit for the course, and getting
volunteer hours. The PAL program provides students with an opportunity to help at risk students,

Each PAL is assigned 3 5 students, called PALees, who are identified by the teacher or counselor as
needing extra support. The elementary or intermediate students are referred for academic support,
behavioral issues, or social issues. It is the PALs job to cater to the need of each student they are
mentoring. The PAL visits each of these students once per week for 30 minutes during the school day.
Each week has a theme that the activity must follow. Some of the weekly themes include math,
reading, crafts, and technology. The PAL plans a new activity for each week to support the need of
each student. Many kids benefit from this program because they have someone who is a good role
model for them as well as someone they can count on.
PALs not only make a difference in the lives of students, but also in the community. PALs participate
in community service project including collecting school supplies, toy drives, and gift packages for
the armed forces. PALs also put on events for special needs students such as APE Field Day for all the
special needs students in the district. At this event students get to play games and have a chance to win
prizes. PALs also support school sports teams by attending games as a group. They support the players

Individuals undergoing transition often tend to challenge their own and society s attitude, beliefs and
perception. As such, they can often understand or enhance their significance of societal contexts
allowing them to vocalize disposition and maturity, thus affecting the individual s current ideological

distinctive form of transition by addressing homosexuality within the audio visual (music video)

The Norfolk Four-Course System Analysis
Recently, there has been a shift of the land: new crops and new owner. As for crops, the Norfolk four
course system has come into popularity; the system is characterized by 4 stages, wheat, then turnips,
next clover and ryegrass which is then left for grazing or fodder. Being able to leave non producing
land for 2 years maybe be a contributor to the new owners. Large farms owned by the upper class have
become more and more dominant over the years. Perhaps it is related to their ability to follow the
Norfolk system; they have the financial stability to leave the land alone. Maybe it could be their
ability to purchase the newest machinery, or it could be their ability to hire laborers. All of this means
it is harder for small farmers to compete.

organization and has immunity from being prosecuted that makes the court look unfair and re enforces
the idea that that the powerful are untouchable. Another case would be that the ICC has been heavily
criticized for being prone to prosecute cases only in Africa, which raises the question why do they
prosecute countries that are not wealthy and ignore the corruption in wealthy countries. These small
questions can make one consider if there really is a need for an international criminal court. However
what one fails to understand is there is a need for an international court. In this paper I will be

Mr. Stevens Failure
Humanity progresses through trial and error. Whenever an idea is conceived, we look back on either
our life or those who are thought to have a similar experience in order to make a final judgement on
which action to take. This is how the process has gone for thousands of years; but in the end we all
endure some kind of failure. We often look back and realize how obvious of a bad choice it was, and
in the end we chalk it up to another lesson learned. However, there are some of us who think a bit
more before we speak in order to avoid failure and disappointment, but how far will that tactic take
us? In Kazuo Ishiguro s, The Remains of the Day, protagonist Mr. Stevens constantly goes out of his

What makes his father a great butler is the loyalty between the butler and the employer, which Stevens
defines as dignity. The night his father passes is a great example of how he upholds dignity. Stevens
concludes that if he were to mourn his father s death instead of tending to Lord Darlington s meeting,
the night would have been wasted. ...I go so far to suggest that I did perhaps display, in the face of
everything, at least in some modest degree a dignity worthy of someone live Mr. Marshall or come to

memory of his father passing away, one of the last phrases he hears from him is, I haven t been a good

Prospero s Magic In The Tempest
Vindication of Prospero s Magic by Shakespeare in The Tempest
Introduction
The Tempest is generally considered as Shakespeare s romantic and dramatic art. It also counted as
one of Shakespeare s most professional plays. It is also regarded Shakespeare s final play that he
wrote. It represents Prospero, the magician, who gives up his magic in the last part of the play. The
occasion for The Tempest was Shakespeare s expectation of his retirement. In many ways it is the
decisive moment of Shakespeare s art. In the play s final scene, Prospero used his power to attract and
show when he gives up the magic. Shakespeare showed evil, tragedy and suffering as part of a magic
based plan that ended in regret, forgiveness, love and recovery of that which was lost. During the fall

It may be noted that Prospero otherwise resembles a magician of the middle ages. He is equipped with
his books, his wand and his robe. He is also afraid of the damnation that a magician incurs by his
practice of magic. So in the epilogue Prospero solicits the goodwill and prayers of the audience:
Unless I be relieved by prayer, which pierces so that it assails, mercy itself and frees all faults (V, i, 16
20).
The power is Ariel s and the other island spirits. Prospero s magic lies in his power to use language to
convince others to believe in him and do his request. On the island, he becomes master of the monster
Caliban (the son of Sycorax, a malevolent witch) and forces Caliban into submission by torturing him
with magic if he does not obey him, and Ariel, an elemental who is beholden to Prospero after he is
freed from his prison inside a tree.
However, at the end of the play, Prospero intends to drown his book and gives up magic. In the view
of the audience, this may have been required to make the ending unambiguously happy, as magic
delivered too much of extremely cruel works; and he will drown his

Explain Why It Is Important To Take A Child s Temperature
Taking Your Child s Temperature
Knowing how to take your child s temperature is important so you can identify fevers and treat
illnesses properly. A normal temperature range is between 96°F (35.8°C) and 99°F (37.3°C). To find
out what temperature is normal for your child, take your child s temperature when he or she is well.
Whenever you take your child s temperature, write it down. Record the time, date, and any symptoms
your child has.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF THERMOMETERS?
There are several different types of thermometers. No matter which type you use, you should always
use a thermometer that provides a digital reading. Types of thermometers recommended for safe use
include:

the rectum (rectally), or under the arm (axillary). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This type is designed to be placed against the side of the forehead. It picks up the heat from the
temporal artery, which runs across the forehead.
Tympanic thermometer. This type is designed to be inserted gently into the ear canal. It records the
heat from a child s eardrum.
There are a few types of thermometer that are not recommended for use because they may not be safe
or they may not provide an accurate reading. Types of thermometers not recommended for use
include:
Glass mercury thermometers. Mercury is dangerous to your child s health and to the environment. The
glass in this type of thermometer can break, which could result in injury.
Temperature strips. These disposable strips have chemically treated dots that register temperature.
Pacifier thermometer. This type is shaped like a pacifier and is used to measure a child s temperature

Natural Law And The Preservation Of Human Life
Natural law and the Preservation of Human Life
Donald J. Moore
Webster University
September 18, 2016
Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment,
one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all
plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God
instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self preservation is not only a
function of protecting one s self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished
through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas teachings proclaim that God created the
universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that life begins at conception and that
the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law.
A young woman who is four months pregnant has recently discovered that she has tuberculosis. The
doctor informs her that she must take a drug that will cure her disease, but that the drug will also have
the effect of aborting the fetus. There is no other available drug that will cure her disease, and if she
does not take the drug immediately she will die. According to natural law, may the young woman take
the drug? Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the fetus may not be
capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life. However, the fetus

Persuasive Essay On Underage Drinking
The law does not stop underage drinking. In the United States, the minimum drinking age is 21, while
in many other countries it ranges from 16 18. In Germany, minors who are as young as fourteen can
drink alcoholic beverages including wine and beer within the supervison of a parent or legal guardian.
There has been much controversy over alcohol for numerous years, the most recent argument is
whether the legal drinking age should be twenty one or lowered to eighteen. Minimizing the legal
drinking age from twenty one to eighteen would be a successful step in reshaping the binge drinking
culture in this country, encouraging young adults to safely participate in the activity of drinking
alcohol, and permitting those of legal age the chance to entirely and responsibly make adult decisions.
College students across the nation are engaging in the illegal activity of drinking alcohol every
weekend. M. B. Esser M. Siegel, who are both medical doctors, say A systematic literature review
found that as youth are exposed to a greater volume of alcohol marketing, they are more likely to
drink or for those who already drink, to drink more. (Esser, and Siegel 426) This concept makes me
think of how much alcohol is consumed on college campuses making others feel forced or cool if they
do so. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism determined that there are presently
10.8 million American underage drinkers. Many argue that 18 year olds are too reckless and impulsive

Tribal Sovereignty Controversy
Tribal sovereignty is a highly debated concept and an important aspect of Native American society. It
refers to a tribe s power to govern itself, manage its membership, and regulate tribal relations. As
Joanna Barker stated, Sovereignty carries the awful stench of colonization. Tribal sovereignty must be
traced to the beginning of colonization in North America. Colonizing nations asserted sovereignty
over indigenous people and took away their independent status. The term tribal sovereignty carries
with it multiples meanings and implications for tribal nations (Cobb, 2005). Amanda Cobb (2005)
defines sovereignty as a nation s power to self govern, to determine its own way of life, and to live
that life to whatever extent possible free from interference. If tribal sovereignty falls under Cobb s
definition, Native American tribes in the United States are not completely sovereign, for some aspects
of their lives are still under the control of the federal government. Tribal councils are still regarded as
having tribal sovereignty, but they are limited by federal funding and authority. Sovereignty is a nation
s relative independence from and among other states (Cobb, 2005). In this case, tribal sovereignty of
Native nations depends upon recognition by the United States. This is ironic; their tribal sovereignty
has been granted to them by the Unites States federal government. No single nation is completely
independent of foreign influence. Tribal nations more so

Self In Zootopia
Anyone can be Anything: How Self is Shaped by Individuals and Society.
In the movie Zootopia, racial profiling and social stereotypes are allegorized into distinctive,
discriminatory clade of predator prey and species archetypes such as slow sloths, sly foxes and dumb
bunnies. Most reviews praised the movie s thematic portrayals of stereotypes (e.g. Telegraph, New
York Times) and universal values of freedom and perseverance (e.g. Washington Post). But few
reviews address the films exploration of variations of identity as noted by Screen Crush, and there was
no in depth analysis of self. Hence, this essay seeks to explore self in Zootopia. Within the city of

This implies that one s self is susceptible to racial profiling and stereotyping, as Zootopia allegorizes.
In Zootopia, although Nick had childhood aspirations of becoming a scout, his victimization at the
hands of other animals leaves him with a pessimistic view of being able to define self outside of his
species stereotype, stating that if society see[s] a fox as shifty and untrustworthy, there s no point in
being anything else. Nick therefore accepts society s profiling as a sly fox and becomes a con artist. In
stark contrast to the hopeful belief spurred from the slogan that Zootopian characters have the
sovereignty to freely pursue their dreams, species stereotyping within Zootopia limits the autonomy to
construct self, and instead self making is dominated by these discriminative perceptions.
Consequently, Zootopian characters such as Nick resigned self to a discriminatory role. No longer is
self constructed by just the individual; Species stereotyping becomes the social forces which drives
the individual s notion of self. Although Zootopia s motto of anyone can be anything allows citizens to
participate in self creation, societal perceptions of the individual dictates their notion of

Hollywood Movies In The 1960s
In the late 1960s, the New Hollywood era approached a new style of filming geared towards different
generations of people. Leading up to new Hollywood, the 1960s brought devastation to the film
industry. With the massive production of televisions along with the migration of millions to suburbs
away from the cities, movie theaters lost their popularity very quickly. Fewer films were being made,
thus hurting Hollywood in every way possible. However, as the late 1960s approached, the new
Hollywood era arose with new ways to attract movie goers once more. Although, the movies released

In doing so, the industry was able to make similar, cheap movies that attracted more and more
teenagers. Movies like monster movies and outlaw movies made the most money which helped
Hollywood get back on their feet. Outlaw movies like Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider became
popular because they both have similar plot lines that are based on going against the system and
fighting the man . We can see a similarity with these two movies as they both break the law and run
away to become free. For example, Clyde gets Bonnie and others hooked on robbing banks to fight the
Great Depression they are currently in. They break the law, fall in love, have gun battles with the cops,
and generally have a fun time with it. Teenagers are always interested in this type of action and getting
back at the system. In Easy Rider, Captain America and Billy make a huge drug deal and run off with
their money, smoke marijuana all day long, have sex, and do other substances along their journey. This
outlaw ish behavior was what teenagers and young adults were doing at this time. In the late 1960s,
marijuana and other substances became largely popular, rock and roll was popular, all of the things
Captain America and Billy do could be very similar to what was actually going on in America at the
time; therefore the audience can relate to the characters. Although different movies entirely, both

Some of the characters in this book exemplify the type of people who break the law, and I think it is
important to focus on them because these are the people who are responsible for so many of the world
s problems. First, I will be discussing Charlie s own parents. As children, we expect our parents to be
the ones who are always there, the people that have your back, and the people who will love until the
end of time. However, for a lot of children this is not the case. And in Charlie s life, this was far from
reality. His parents were embarrassed and disgusted by him and his mental disability. They were
ashamed. The main culprit was his mother. His mother would yell at him, treat him like nothing, and
just pretend that he didn t have feelings and that he wasn t her son. For instance: Now he had a clear
picture of Charlie s mother, screaming at him, holding a leather belt in her hand, and his father trying
to hold her back (112). This example shows how his mother felt about him, how his father reacted, and
how his mother chose to take it out on Charlie: abuse. This next example Now I can see where I got
the usual motivation for becoming smart that so amazed everyone at first. It was something Rose

The Impact Of Colonial Rule On Women s Independence Movement
In 1830, France established a naval blockade off the coast of Algiers in an attempt to take control of
the ports previously controlled by the Ottoman Empire. This was the beginning of a massive French
colonization project in the North African region commonly referred to as the Maghreb (Szekely
11/3/16). Countries in the Maghreb have experienced varying degrees of colonial influence. While
Algeria experienced a large influx of colonists from France and experienced direct rule by the French,
Tunisia was considered a French Protectorate. The impact of colonial rule has significantly shaped the
post independence politics of these countries and continue to play a role in the current political
systems present in the Maghreb. Algerian national identity is heavily influenced by its history as a
colonial stronghold of France and the Algerian nationalism that arose from its fight for independence
is so pervasive that it has taken hold of modern Algerian politics. Modern ethnic divisions, along with
the complexities of national identity, rely heavily upon the varying methods of colonial rule
experienced by these states. Tunisia s independence movement was far less violent and therefore made
it better suited for the unified political reform seen during the Arab Spring uprisings, while the divide
and conquer method of colonial rule used by the French in Algeria still remains a major source for the
lack of a unified national identity. Algeria and Tunisia had variant experiences under

Pest Control

I. Importance of natural method of pest control
The problem with broad range conventional pesticides is that they not only kill the bad bugs, but they
rub out the good bugs, too. A garden without natural predators means a world of insects gone wild.
There s nothing left to keep pest levels in check. In fact, chemicals can mean double trouble because
although you wipe out the first wave of pests, the second wave which is not the usual pest, but another
insect moving into the area can cause even greater losses than the insects you were trying to get rid of
in the first place. Another reason to go natural and use beneficials, is that a greater number of insects
are now showing resistance to chemical pesticides. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Ground Coffee: Leftover coffee grounds make great ingredients to compost. They work as natural

The acidity of the coffee is what keeps invaders at bay.
Vegetable oil: If mildew, mold or fungus is a problem, heres a solution you can spray right on the plant

Dish Washing Liquid: If a fungus has invaded your plants, mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid and

Egg: To get rid of snails and slugs in your garden, add crushed eggshells to your soil. To them, its

The Role of Women and Community in Christianity Versus...
Christianity and Islam are two of the world s largest and most recognized religions. They are both
religions believing in one God and each has a holy book, the Qur an and the Bible. Both books
encourage belief in God and teach patience and honesty. They both also forbid lying and stealing and
believe in some type of Heaven and Hell. So, if they have so much in common, why is there so much
conflict between the two? This question is the exact reason why I chose to take World Religion. I
thought it was important to learn and understand the beliefs of other religions so that I could better

This event was one of the most important events setting the position for women in each book.
In every country around the world, women s lives are shaped by the influences of both society and by
religion. The Quran, Islam s holy book, mandates that women have the right to seek education, choose
their own mates, work, possess and inherit wealth or property, divorce, and remarry (Hurley 76). So
despite the Quran s clear support for women s rights and equality, why do many people feel that
Muslim women are oppressed? The hijab head covering worn by Muslim women has been in the news
on and off for some time now and has been a topic of many debates. Here in America, one would feel
this requirement on women as oppressive, but most Muslim women feel that this is a way to be looked
at not for their beauty, but for their minds. The issues here is that people have a hard time
differentiating between culture and religion, two things that are completely different but have a huge
effect on each other. People also have a hard time understanding things that are different. Just because
it is different than how we live, doesn t necessarily mean it s wrong.
Islamic law condemns oppression of any kind whether it is towards a woman or in general (Islamic
social systems). However, there are many contradictions to this in the Quran. Take

Disability And Disability
The term bureaucracy means to rule by desks or offices. Bureaucrats implement government policy by
putting laws and decisions made by elected individuals into action. Over time, many different people
have defined the concept of disability in many different ways. This becomes a major issue when the
definition of disability needs to be defined by the government, because of the laws and decisions the
government makes based off of it. Something like the concept of disability being defined in a certain
way affects the policies that the bureaucracies implement, so it is important to look at the history of
disability and the several models one can use to analyze it, as it decided the fate of several people
across the United States. Through historical, medical, and bureaucratic contexts, it can be seen how far
the disabilities movement has come within law, and where it is heading in the future. The beginning of
disability being encoded into law started with the Civil War. This first started with the making of the
Civil War draft, which was brought about when both the North and South needed to recruit men to
fight in the war. The draft was made first by creating a standard of normality, and an able bodied
soldier was the model for this standard. This later led to decisions that had to be made about who was
able bodied and how it was defined. Once the standard was created, men were evaluated compared to
that standard, and were drafted if they fit (Class notes 9/7). This impacted

The development of iron and coal industries in the area of Moskow, St. Petersburg, the Baltic coast and

Analysis Of Danzn
Danzón (1991) is a film directed by Maria Navarro, a Mexican director. According to Navarro, this
film is about a journey taken to look for the Mexican identity. This film is part of Navarro s repertoire
of films about a woman, Julia Solórzano, who goes through some form of distress and ends up finding
herself. The film, Danzón is centered around Julia Solórzano, a middle aged single mother of a 15 year
old girl, working as a telephone receptionist, who searched for her dancing partner Carmelo. Julia
leaves her daughter and home and embarks a journey from Mexico City to the port of Veracruz as her
personal odyssey. The trip turns out to be more a quest of self discovery than a search for a friend.
Danzón is a ballroom dance of Afro Cuban origin from the city of Matanzas close to La Habana. For
Julia, dancing is more than just a pastime, it is the highlight of her life. She greatly enjoys the strict
codes of conduct prescribed by Danzón and in particular the formal respect with which her regular
dance partner, Carmelo, treats her. For instance, when she was invited to dance by a younger man, she
refused him, rejects him, commenting to her friend Silvia that a woman should never dance with a
younger partner.
In Danzon, a scene closes to the end shows how Julia decides to act outside the conventions of a

depending on their age or where they live. Two methods used in this field are content analysis and

the work of two groups of researchers. Content analysis was used by Brian Bigelow and John La

Prior to commencing their research, Bigelow and La Gaipa and Corsaro needed to decide who the
participants would be. They wanted to know what children s personal views were, so a common factor
for both types of research was that those taking part were all children. Bigelow and La Gaipa chose a
large sample of children aged 6 to 14 years old (Brownlow, 2012). They all resided in the same city in
Canada and came from a similar or identical social group. There were 480 participants all together
chosen from eight schools, with thirty girls and thirty boys from each. The age range was a significant
factor to them because they wanted to study how children understood friendship at different ages and
stages of their life. Using such a large number of children in their study meant that they could make
generalisations about children s friendships and how they develop over time. This data could then be
applied to children as a whole. Corsaro chose his participants differently. The children that took part in
his studies were about three years old (Brownlow, 2012). In addition, unlike Bigelow and La Gaipa,
Corasro did not limit his research to one city, or even one country. He wanted to know what friendship
meant for children at different times and in different places. Therefore, Corsaro studied children in
different countries including, the United States and Italy (Interview with William Corsaro, 2010). By

Emotional Voices Of Shakespeare s The Merchant Of...
William Shakespeare expresses Shylock and Hamlet s emotional voices explicitly throughout both
plays: The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. The emotional voices in both texts were due to the tragic
incidences each protagonist Shylock and Hamlet endured. In The Merchant of Venice the emotions
seen within the text are hatred and penitence, whereas in Hamlet the audience can infer that the
emotions portrayed are depression, pain and terror; thus instigating that there is a contrasting concept
between The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. This can be seen through Hamlet s situation where his
emotions were triggered by his father s passing. As stated in Act 4 Scene 4, he utters: My thoughts be
bloody or be nothing worth . The word bloody suggests that he has malicious intentions as he
indicated obliviously that he wanted to avenge his father. Hamlet cannot afford to think of anything
other than his unsettled task: execute his father s assumed murderer. This brings out his emotional
voice vengeance as the death of his father had an enormous impact on him, leading him to become
depressed and paranoid throughout the play. Dissimilarly, Shylock s emotion had been caused by the
mistreatment he suffered as a result of him being a Jew in a Christian community. Anti Semitism was
omnipresent in Venice, signifying that Shylock was discriminated against pervasively. This led him to
channel all his anger towards the Christians because of the inevitable exploitation he

These measures represented a substantial departure from the system of the old South; yet few
reforming politicians were not able to go as far and to have as much effect as they intended. In
addition, white Southern Republicans, who outnumbered their black colleagues, gave only window
dressing like support to black civil rights, preferring to court Southern Democrats through moderation
on racial issues (Forner 364 411). Although, the Radical Reconstruction efforts were intended to
redirect the southern economy, to provide for social mobility and to halt the return to the old
plantation system. Ultimately, however, these policies intensified the South s dependence on cotton as
a cash crop and solidified the class divisions in southern society. Condemning Andrew Johnson and
early presidential Reconstruction, Radical Republicans hoped to reshape the South into a land of
industry and diversified agriculture. To these ends, Republicans poured massive amounts of money
into the South to build railways, create infrastructure and develop improved cultivation methods.
Ironically, these improvements bolstered the strength of the plantation system and swelled the ranks of
the economically exploited lower classes. Railways allowed for the extension of cotton plantations
into the upcountry and further west, onto lands occupied by subsistence farmers. Furthermore, new
technology and the increasing efficiency

Is Religion Good Or Harm Essay
Religion is and always has been a central pillar of society, However this does not mean it is a force for
good in the world. Richard Dawkins identifies religion as being viral and harmful, much like a
disease. He is correct as Religion has infected more people than any other thought or disease and has
killed millions of people, oppressed a variety of groups for centuries, and stunted societal growth on
multiple occasions. Some people may disagree and claim that religion brings about many great
qualities in people, which is not incorrect. However it has brought about far more harm than good over
the course of history.
As of 2010, Pew Research estimates there to be 2.2 billion Christians[1] and 1.6 billion Muslims[2].
These 2 groups comprise almost half of the world s population and that is not even considering the
hundreds of other faiths that are still practiced today. Pew also estimates that there are only about 1.1

Political, Legal, And Political System
Like any other country in the world, China has three main formal institutions which are the political,
legal, and economic systems. These formal institutions consist of certain laws, regulations, and rules.
The institutional changes in political systems, legal systems, and market structures are planned to help
Chinese firms as well as foreign firms like Nike to operate in a more supportive institutional
environment (Hitt and Kai 2015). A political system refers to the rules of the game on how a country
is governed politically. China s political system is a communist totalitarianism. According to the
Chinese Constitution, The People s Republic of China is a socialist state under the people s democratic
dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants. (Georgine
2010). With 85 million dues paying members, just over 6% of China s population of 1.35 billion, the
Communist Party of China (CPC) is the largest political party in the world (Lawrence 2013). Some of
the pressures and constraints of Nike in China could rise because of the differences in a political
system compared to the United States. But by being aware of the law and regulations Nike can be able
to have a successful business in cChina. The legal system refers to the rules of the game on how a
country s laws are enacted and enforced. The Chinese legal system is a socialist system of law based
primarily on the Civil Law model (Zhang 2016). The civil law was derived from Roman

Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir...
Characterization of duck viperin
Introduction:
Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV)
(Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic
infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large
burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90
million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al.
2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total
16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in
direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little
to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when
infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore,
characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during
IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response
of ducks, which will help us to control the virus.
When exposing the mallard ducks to the highly pathogenic IAV (H5N1), there was an upregulation in
some innate immunity genes; one of the highest upregulated gene was viperin (Virus inhibitory

Witches And The Witch Trials
In Europe from the late fifteenth to early seventeenth centuries many people, both men and women,
were persecuted as witches. The reasons for the persecution of individuals as witches included gender
discrimination, religious fanaticism, an explanation for the otherwise unexplainable events that took
place, and even as a way for secular officials to gain more wealth. Misogyny being a cause to the
witch trials may have resulted from the new roles of women in society conflicting with the traditional
views of women as sinful, and also accounts for why the majority of individuals persecuted were
women. A religious spark was ignited during the Protestant Reformation as people became more
religiously devoted and wanted to eliminate threats to their faith, such as witches. Many strange
occurrences such as disease or even non harmful events that were simply unexplainable led people to
believe witches as the causes. Some people may have not even believed another person to be a witch
but may have just wanted wealth and that person s possessions and declared them a witch for that
reason. All these factors contributed to the period now known as the witch craze, which resulted in the

Many strive to keep the innocence they are born with, and plenty others spend a lifetime attempting to regain the innocence they have lost with age. In the following photos, innocence is a common theme, which each photographer approaches in a unique way. There is a dull and unsettling truth behind the innocent demonstration of young ladies acting much more mature than their age. Manuel Alvarez Bravo is one of the premier figures of modern photography and the main photographer among the immense Mexican artists of the twentieth century. In The Daughter of the Dancers, Bravo illustrates the idea of youthfulness on the verge of loosing its innocence. Sally Mann, a photographer from the 1980s 90s, caught a reflection of grown up moves inside the innocence and youth of adolescents in Candy Cigarette through her utilization of organization, field point, and technique. In 1985 National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry went through Afghan towns concentrating on the evacuees and recording their hardships. The Afghan Girl is a classical image of lost innocence; the girl was forced to grow up way to fast. Her innocence did not survive, but she did. The innocence of children is secured by the individuals who adore them with the goal that they grow up as actually unaffected by preventable undesirable contributions as could be expected under the circumstances. • 4. Types Of Dwellings Used By Ancient Romans Introduction Up to that time, the western world had never seen an empire as extensive and encompassing as the Roman Empire (Mark, 2011). Even after her fall tales of her exploits continue to be told and retold. However, the Roman Empire was not merely comprised of emperors, generals and poets. Like all civilizations that came before it and that have come since, the domain of Rome comprised of many different people from varying social classes who lived in homes just like people today. For this unit s discussion, I will discuss the layout and function of the various types of dwellings used by the ancient Romans and provide my thoughts regarding how those comparisons compare to the dwellings of today. Discussion The type of dwelling occupied by an ancient Roman was contingent on their place on the social ladder and their vocation (Kirby, 2001b). Furthermore, whereas a farmer would prefer to live out in the country, a merchant, in all likelihood, would prefer to live in the city (Kirby, 2001b). Not unlike today, a substantial portion of the urban population lived in apartments (Kirby, 2001a). Most rentals were located in large complexes called Insula, some of which were as tall as seventy feet (seven stories) (Kirby, 2001a). These apartments would have been crowded usually composed of a single room that doubled as sleeping and living area (Moulton, 1998b). Tenets would have shared a common culinary and sanitary area while plumbing would not have reached those residing on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Moore Webster University September 18, 2016 Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment, one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self preservation is not only a function of protecting one s self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas teachings proclaim that God created the universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that life begins at conception and that the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law. There has been much controversy over alcohol for numerous years, the most recent argument is whether the legal drinking age should be twenty one or lowered to eighteen. Minimizing the legal drinking age from twenty one to eighteen would be a successful step in reshaping the binge drinking culture in this country, encouraging young adults to safely participate in the activity of drinking alcohol, and permitting those of legal age the chance to entirely and responsibly make adult decisions. College students across the nation are engaging in the illegal activity of drinking alcohol every weekend. M. B. Esser M. It refers to a tribe s power to govern itself, manage its membership, and regulate tribal relations. As Joanna Barker stated, Sovereignty carries the awful stench of colonization. Tribal sovereignty must be traced to the beginning of colonization in North America. Colonizing nations asserted sovereignty over indigenous people and took away their independent status. The term tribal sovereignty carries with it multiples meanings and implications for tribal nations (Cobb, 2005). Amanda Cobb (2005) defines sovereignty as a nation s power to self govern, to determine its own way of life, and to live that life to whatever extent possible free from interference. If tribal sovereignty falls under Cobb s definition, Native American tribes in the United States are not completely sovereign, for some aspects of their lives are still under the control of the federal government. Tribal councils are still regarded as having tribal sovereignty, but they are limited by federal funding and authority. Sovereignty is a nation s relative independence from and among other states (Cobb, 2005). In this case, tribal sovereignty of Native nations depends upon recognition by the United States. The Impact Of Colonial Rule On Women s Independence Movement In 1830, France established a naval blockade off the coast of Algiers in an attempt to take control of the ports previously controlled by the Ottoman Empire. This was the beginning of a massive French colonization project in the North African region commonly referred to as the Maghreb (Szekely 11/3/16). Countries in the Maghreb have experienced varying degrees of colonial influence. The impact of colonial rule has significantly shaped the post independence politics of these countries and continue to play a role in the current political systems present in the Maghreb. Combine a gallon of water, a tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Put into a spray bottle and mist plants from top to bottom even in places where there are no signs of a problem. Dish Washing Liquid: If a fungus has invaded your plants, mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid and water and wipe it down. You ll be surprised how quickly this will rejuvenate sickly looking plants! Egg: To get rid of snails and slugs in your garden, add crushed eggshells to your soil. To them, its walking on glass, so snails and slugs will tend to avoid the area entirely. • 26. The Role of Women and Community in Christianity Versus... Christianity and Islam are two of the world s largest and most recognized religions. They are both religions believing in one God and each has a holy book, the Qur an and the Bible. Both books encourage belief in God and teach patience and honesty. They both also forbid lying and stealing and believe in some type of Heaven and Hell. So, if they have so much in common, why is there so much conflict between the two? This question is the exact reason why I chose to take World Religion. In every country around the world, women s lives are shaped by the influences of both society and by religion. The Quran, Islam s holy book, mandates that women have the right to seek education, choose their own mates, work, possess and inherit wealth or property, divorce, and remarry (Hurley 76). So despite the Quran s clear support for women s rights and equality, why do many people feel that Muslim women are oppressed? The hijab head covering worn by Muslim women has been in the news on and off for some time now and has been a topic of many debates. Here in America, one would feel this requirement on women as oppressive, but most Muslim women feel that this is a way to be looked at not for their beauty, but for their minds. The issues here is that people have a hard time differentiating between culture and religion, two things that are completely different but have a huge effect on each other. People also have a hard time understanding things that are different. Just because it is different than how we live, doesn t necessarily mean it s wrong. Islamic law condemns oppression of any kind whether it is towards a woman or in general (Islamic social systems). However, there are many contradictions to this in the Quran. Take ... • 27. Disability And Disability The term bureaucracy means to rule by desks or offices. Bureaucrats implement government policy by putting laws and decisions made by elected individuals into action. Over time, many different people have defined the concept of disability in many different ways. This becomes a major issue when the definition of disability needs to be defined by the government, because of the laws and decisions the government makes based off of it. Something like the concept of disability being defined in a certain way affects the policies that the bureaucracies implement, so it is important to look at the history of disability and the several models one can use to analyze it, as it decided the fate of several people across the United States. Through historical, medical, and bureaucratic contexts, it can be seen how far the disabilities movement has come within law, and where it is heading in the future. The beginning of disability being encoded into law started with the Civil War. This first started with the making of the Civil War draft, which was brought about when both the North and South needed to recruit men to fight in the war. The draft was made first by creating a standard of normality, and an able bodied soldier was the model for this standard. This later led to decisions that had to be made about who was able bodied and how it was defined. Once the standard was created, men were evaluated compared to that standard, and were drafted if they fit (Class notes 9/7). This impacted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Children may have different understandings of what friendship means to them depending on their age or where they live. Two methods used in this field are content analysis and ethnology. This essay will illustrate the similarities and differences between the two methods through the work of two groups of researchers. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prior to commencing their research, Bigelow and La Gaipa and Corsaro needed to decide who the participants would be. They wanted to know what children s personal views were, so a common factor for both types of research was that those taking part were all children. Bigelow and La Gaipa chose a large sample of children aged 6 to 14 years old (Brownlow, 2012). They all resided in the same city in Canada and came from a similar or identical social group. There were 480 participants all together chosen from eight schools, with thirty girls and thirty boys from each. The age range was a significant factor to them because they wanted to study how children understood friendship at different ages and stages of their life. Using such a large number of children in their study meant that they could make generalisations about children s friendships and how they develop over time. This data could then be applied to children as a whole. Corsaro chose his participants differently. The children that took part in his studies were about three years old (Brownlow, 2012). In addition, unlike Bigelow and La Gaipa, Corasro did not limit his research to one city, or even one country. He wanted to know what friendship meant for children at different times and in different places. Therefore, Corsaro studied children in different countries including, the United States and Italy (Interview with William Corsaro, 2010). By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Emotional Voices Of Shakespeare s The Merchant Of... William Shakespeare expresses Shylock and Hamlet s emotional voices explicitly throughout both plays: The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. The emotional voices in both texts were due to the tragic incidences each protagonist Shylock and Hamlet endured. In The Merchant of Venice the emotions seen within the text are hatred and penitence, whereas in Hamlet the audience can infer that the emotions portrayed are depression, pain and terror; thus instigating that there is a contrasting concept between The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. This can be seen through Hamlet s situation where his emotions were triggered by his father s passing. As stated in Act 4 Scene 4, he utters: My thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth . The word bloody suggests that he has malicious intentions as he indicated obliviously that he wanted to avenge his father. Hamlet cannot afford to think of anything other than his unsettled task: execute his father s assumed murderer. This brings out his emotional voice vengeance as the death of his father had an enormous impact on him, leading him to become depressed and paranoid throughout the play. Dissimilarly, Shylock s emotion had been caused by the mistreatment he suffered as a result of him being a Jew in a Christian community. Anti Semitism was omnipresent in Venice, signifying that Shylock was discriminated against pervasively. This led him to channel all his anger towards the Christians because of the inevitable exploitation he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although, the Radical Reconstruction efforts were intended to redirect the southern economy, to provide for social mobility and to halt the return to the old plantation system. Ultimately, however, these policies intensified the South s dependence on cotton as a cash crop and solidified the class divisions in southern society. Condemning Andrew Johnson and early presidential Reconstruction, Radical Republicans hoped to reshape the South into a land of industry and diversified agriculture. To these ends, Republicans poured massive amounts of money into the South to build railways, create infrastructure and develop improved cultivation methods. Ironically, these improvements bolstered the strength of the plantation system and swelled the ranks of the economically exploited lower classes. Richard Dawkins identifies religion as being viral and harmful, much like a disease. Some people may disagree and claim that religion brings about many great qualities in people, which is not incorrect. However it has brought about far more harm than good over the course of history. • 39. Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir... Characterization of duck viperin Introduction: Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV) (Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90 million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al. 2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total 16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore, characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response of ducks, which will help us to control the virus. When exposing the mallard ducks to the highly pathogenic IAV (H5N1), there was an upregulation in some innate immunity genes; one of the highest upregulated gene was viperin (Virus inhibitory protein, ... • 40. Witches And The Witch Trials In Europe from the late fifteenth to early seventeenth centuries many people, both men and women, were persecuted as witches. The reasons for the persecution of individuals as witches included gender discrimination, religious fanaticism, an explanation for the otherwise unexplainable events that took place, and even as a way for secular officials to gain more wealth. Misogyny being a cause to the witch trials may have resulted from the new roles of women in society conflicting with the traditional views of women as sinful, and also accounts for why the majority of individuals persecuted were women. A religious spark was ignited during the Protestant Reformation as people became more religiously devoted and wanted to eliminate threats to their faith, such as witches. Many strange occurrences such as disease or even non harmful events that were simply unexplainable led people to believe witches as the causes. Some people may have not even believed another person to be a witch but may have just wanted wealth and that person s possessions and declared them a witch for that reason. All these factors contributed to the period now known as the witch craze, which resulted in the torture and death of many people. One of the main factors in the persecution of witches comes from the men of the time s misogynistic attitudes. For example face, fingerprint, signature, voice etc. Face recognition is a task humans perform remarkably easily and successfully. In face recognition Features extracted from a face are processed and compared with similarly processed faces present in the database. If a face is recognized it is known or the system may show a similar face existing in database else it is unknown. Face recognition has been a topic of active research since the 80 s, proposing solutions to several practical problems. It has been a challenging job for the researchers to develop a facial recognition system with 100% accuracy because of all the difficulties and limitations. As we know that the human face changes after a short period of time so no facial recognition system can work perfectly after a few years. It has to be updated with the latest database images of the person in order to verify the person. Also wearing spectacles, mask, mustaches may also affect the output of the face recognition system. Face recognition is a biometric which is much easier to understand, because we recognize or identify different people mostly by their faces. However the recognition process used by the human brain for identifying faces has not a concrete explanation. It has now become essential to have reliable security systems in ...
